This CBS mid-season replacement series and a similarly themed one on NBC called Captain Nice (1967) both debuted the same evening, 9 January 1967, in successive time slots. Both shows aired their last episode on 28 August 1967. Neither was renewed for a second, full season.
After the show was canceled, Universal edited episodes into two feature films titled "The Pill Caper" and "The Power Pill," which were syndicated to television. "The Pill Caper" contained new footage, including a scene with Hal Smith as a train passenger. The studio didn't bother to alert cast members to these edits, so when Dick Gautier caught wind of them, he demanded residual payments.
Alan Young was the star of the unaired pilot, filmed in 1967.
The character of Mr Terrific is an amalgamation of DC Comic's golden age superheroes; the name "Mr Terrific" is from the DC's Mr Terrific (Terry Sloane), the costume is similar to DC's flying character "Black Condor", and the 1-hour super pills are similar to the Miraclo pills that "Hourman" took for limited strength and powers.
