Introduction to Marcus Welby

In this pilot episode, we get to see Robert Young wearing a very obvious (and very bad) toupee. The story starts off on a bad note. Welby suffers a heart attack. Thus, he is depicted as a patient before we get to know him as a doctor. Despite this, the episode plays well. Some curious casting choices, as well. Anne Baxter as Welby's love interest? I've never been particular fan of Anne Baxter, but I do think she could have done a little better than that. James Brolin as Dr Kiley saves the show. Brolin gives this pretty downbeat episode the energy that it needs. The best part of the episode is an appearance by Susan Strasberg. She plays an uptight, self-centered young woman, and she plays the part perfectly. Susan looks good here, and I just LOVED her short skirts! If not for Susan, I would have given this episode only 6 stars.
