Sex & Nudity

  • There is a scene where a young woman is topless and moving around in bed- breasts seen for several minutes
  • Female full frontal nudity throughout the movie. Nuns are seen baring their clothes on more than one occasion.
  • Many nude women are seen running around in extended scene for about 5-10 minutes whilst also doing sexual acts. Very graphic. There is also brief male frontal nudity in this scene. These nude women are seen in later scenes while also nude.
  • A woman with the plague is seen naked.
  • In a dream sequence, a nun makes love to Grandier; brief nudity.

Violence & Gore

  • Victims of the plague are seen in closeup, several victims of the plague are seen being dumped into a large pit containing hundreds more plague victims.
  • Wasps are placed in jars and then stuck onto a sick naked woman's body as a "cure."
  • There are shots of mouldy skeletons including a close-up of a skull containing lots of maggots.
  • A man dressed as a crow is let free from a cage and then shot dead as sport by the King.
  • There are various scenes of women whipping themselves.
  • A woman self mutilates by digging her crucifix into the palm of her hand.

  • While the film is disturbing and intense it's not scary or frightening in a traditional sense.

Sex & Nudity

  • In an extended exorcism scene, all the nuns remove their clothes and run wild around the church in a wild lust. Full frontal nudity throughout. In the uncut version they pull the crucifix off the wall and thrust and grind on top of it, in the infamous "Rape of Christ" scene.

Violence & Gore

  • Father Grandier is tortured by having his legs crushed in a device using wedges driven in by a hammer. The UK version is longer and includes a fleeting glimpse of the bloodied legs which was removed from the US print.
  • Father Grandier is burnt at the stake. In the UK version, his face becomes covered in blisters and then is blackened and charred. in the US version, most of the gory details were replaced by shots of billowing flames or onlookers.
  • There are scenes of torture including Father Grandier having a needle pierce his tongue and prolonged scenes of him having his legs broken by Father Barre using wooden wedges.
  • Father Grandier is tied to a wooden stake which is then set on fire; there is a long sequence as he burns to death as the film keeps coming back to him in various states of him being burnt.
