Paul Hanlon, the manager of a football team, murders Eric Wagner, the swinger who inherited the franchise. Hanlon sets up a complicated alibi that includes making phone calls on phones he knows are bugged, disguising himself as a Ding-A-Ling ice cream truck driver, and choosing a block of ice as a murder weapon. The murder will look like an accident and Hanlon will seem to have been miles away from the scene, but the rumpled Lt. Columbo is on the case and finds good reason to believe it was no accident.
