Hey everyone! Before we bid adieu to the year 2021, we have one last batch of home media releases on the horizon this week, including two great Sundance films—Mayday and Knocking—and one of my favorite movie discoveries of the last few years, Seven Deaths in the Cat’s Eyes, which is getting a Blu-ray from Twilight Time. Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for December 28th include Venom (1971) aka The Legend of the Spider Forest, The Cropsey Incident, Bigfoot Creek, and Red Snow.
Bigfoot Creek
The world has moved on, but he's still out there. Since the 1970s he has roamed the countryside, watching...and waiting. He has been sighted several times over the last few decades and this all-new docudrama chronicles these true events that occurred throughout the Midwest. Featuring interviews and locations from the real encounters.

It’s been awhile since the world has seen a new comedy from Greg Daniels, co-creator of The Office (U.S.) and Parks and Recreation. That all changes this month with Amazon Prime’s new releases for May 2020. That’s right, leading the pack of Amazon originals on May 1 is Daniels’ Upload, a comedy about digital afterlives. That should inject a healthy dose of sci-fi “middletopia” into our lives.
Also premiering in May is the second season of Amazon Prime’s twisty drama Homecoming. This season starts Janelle Monáe and premieres on May 22. After that, the rest of Amazon’s originals this month are fairly film-centric. The Goldfinch, Seberg, and The Vast of Night are the notable original films arriving in May.
Per usual the first of the month sees the biggest injection of movie content. Though there is...

Though much of the entertainment industry is currently paralyzed by Coronavirus and the lockdowns imposed to curb its spread, streaming services are now making out like bandits. Netflix and Amazon Prime both have reported record viewing figures, though that isn’t particularly surprising given that they have an almost literally captive audience.
Anyhow, with all eyes on the small screen, anything new and exciting is eagerly hoovered up. And after learning about all of the new and exciting shows and movies hitting Netflix in May, now it’s Amazon Prime’s turn.
Here’s the full release schedule:

On tap right now are several new stills from the latest horror anthology on its way entitled Phantasmagoria (no relation to the old school PC game or the Marilyn Manson project of the same name). Check 'em out along with the latest details.
From the Press Release
Take a look at Venantino Venantini (City of the Living Dead, Ladyhawke, Contraband, Seven Deaths in the Cat's Eye) as "GrandPa" in the upcoming sensation of horror from France and Italy, Phantasmagoria, which recently wrapped production.
Cristina Puccinelli (L’Ultimo Weekend), Alberto Cattaneo, Sophie Pâris, and newcomer Maya Dolan star in Phantasmagoria, which follows “three shocking tales of horror that take you beyond fear.”
Co-directed by Mickael Abbate (Creeps), Domiziano Cristopharo (House of Flesh Mannequins, Red Krokodil, Doll Syndrome), and Tiziano Martella (Legio Xiii), Phantasmagoria is a vibrating tribute to William Castle’s cinema but also introduces original visions of fear in three...

As production has wrapped up on the upcoming Franco-Italo horror anthology Phantasmagoria we have been given three exclusive images to share with you. The first is of Italian actor Venantino Venantini, from such films as City of the Living Dead and Seven Deaths in the Cat's Eye. The second is a pair of sexy heels and the third is of newcomer Maya Dolan. I find myself constantly drawn to the third image for some reason. Must be the architecture of that villa in the background. Yeah. Must be. If we look at Italian genre film-making as a blurry palette rather than a paintbox of discreet hues, we can perceive areas where one kind of film-making shades into another. The gothic fantasy may have preceded the giallo, but the two co-existed for some years, and most of the filmmakers who were important to one genre were also valuable in the other, as exemplified by Mario Bava, who more or less inaugurated both fields, first with Black Sunday and then with Blood and Black Lace (to pick, more or less randomly, two well-known English titles for two oft-retitled films).
Antonio Margheriti was another genre workhorse, shooting some of the more elegant bits of Paul Morrissey's Blood for Dracula and Flesh for Frankenstein, but also dabbling in sci-fi, the spaghetti western, Vietnam war flicks, often under the pseudonym of Anthony Dawson.

The term “giallo” initially referred to cheap yellow paperbacks (printed American mysteries from writers such as Agatha Christie), that were distributed in post-fascist Italy. Applied to cinema, the genre is comprised of equal parts early pulp thrillers, mystery novels, with a willingness to gleefully explore onscreen sex and violence in provocative, innovative ways. Giallos are strikingly different from American crime films: they value style and plot over characterization, and tend towards unapologetic displays of violence, sexual content, and taboo exploration. The genre is known for stylistic excess, characterized by unnatural yet intriguing lighting techniques, convoluted plots, red herrings, extended murder sequences, excessive bloodletting, stylish camerawork and unusual musical arrangements. Amidst the ‘creative kill’ set-pieces are thematic undercurrents along with a whodunit element, usually some sort of twist ending. Here is my list of the best giallo films – made strictly by Italian directors, so don’t expect Black Swan, Amer or...
