Sacrilege is a film about paganism, from the United Kingdom. Focusing on four characters out for a girl's weekend, this quartet finds themselves involved in an ancient ritual. Now, an ancient goddess is exploiting their greatest fears. This title, from director David Creed (Facility 31), has already released in UK theatres. Now, there is the possibility of a wider release, with the an international poster available here. The central cast includes a few familiar names. This film fan has recently seen Tamaryn Payne in Small Town Folk (2007). Emily Wyatt (Mission of Honor), Naomi Willow (Bonded by Blood) and Emma Spurgin Hussey (A Werewolf in England) also centrally star in this indie horror feature. As well, the latest sales art shows the goddess from the film. The five-pointed star reveals some of the evil in store for viewers. And, one side of the figure's burnt flesh shows a darker side, in this well drawn graphic.

Redemption can be a hard ticket to punch, in real life let alone on film. An arc has to be convincing in a short space of time and make us believe our protagonist’s journey. Thanks to a brilliant performance by Karen Black and a meticulously unfurled plot, The Pyx (1973) offers sorrow and resolution in a gripping package.
Released in September by Cinepix Film Properties in our home and native land, Canada, and by Cinerama Releasing Corporation in the States the following month, The Pyx used Canadian shelter funds not to tell an exploitive tale, but rather a somber character study dressed up as a neo-noir with an occult twist. Not an easy sell to be sure, but does it really matter? At the end of the day, The Pyx is another noble attempt to infuse the genre with unusual strands regardless of the box office receipts. (I mean, my...

After a restored print played for the first time at the 2015 Toronto Film Festival, Kino Lorber presents Julian Roffman’s 1961 vintage horror film The Mask on 3D Blu-ray. Collectors of vintage 3D technology and classic horror cinema should take note, especially for the film’s expressive, nightmarish sequences. Hailed as ‘psychedlic’ and repackaged as a psychotronic classic, the title is a fun throwback to event cinema.
Owning several notable distinctions, not only was it the first Canadian film widely distributed in the United States, but it was also the only 3D feature from the country to play here, as well as the Canada’s first foray into the genre. It’s the last of only two titles directed by Roffman, who would eventually produce a small handful of films (including the obscure early 70s delight The Pyx).

Circus of the Face: A Delectable Restoration of Obscure Canadian Horror Film

The Toronto International Film Festival’s sole surviving 35mm print was deemed too brittle after an initial screening, but thanks to a recent collaboration between Tiff and the 3D Film Archive, it’s been restored to former glory and screened as part of the 2015 Tiff Cinematheque program. Le diable est parmi nous (a/k/a The Possession of Victoria and Satan’s Sabbath)
Written by John Dunning and André Link
Directed by Jean Beaudin
Canada, 1972
Le diable est parmi nous (also known as The Possession of Virginia and Satan’s Sabbath) continues the Fantasia International Film Festival’s foray into the dark, sleazy recesses on Quebec’s cinematic past. This, like the previously-covered Pouvoir intime, is another homegrown genre effort that hasn’t seen the light of day on home video since the VHS era. The 35mm copy shown at the festival is the only complete extant print, and was loaned from the National Archives of Canada in Ottawa. As such, the screened version is in as good a shape as you could expect an archival print to be. The film itself, meanwhile, is remarkably messier, pitched somewhere between a Parallax View-esque conspiracy thriller and an occult-themed sexploitation film,...
