Hollywood is proof that talent has no age bar, and 10-year-old Connor Esterson is a testament to that. The 5th grader who made his presence felt on screen in Spy Kids: Armageddon has now turned his attention to writing. Esterson has been in talks with bigwigs in the writing fraternity, namely Nick Vallelonga and George Gallo, to pitch a screenplay featuring a young boy’s relationship with a gangster.
Connor Esterson in Spy Kids: Armageddon
The veteran writers were extremely impressed with the aspiring screenwriter’s idea and are now in talks to find ways to get his narrative up and running. While this is a big achievement for someone so young, Esterson’s story is being criticized by netizens for its uncanny similarity to a 1993 Robert De Niro film.

Some of the most famous scenes in the very best Martin Scorsese masterpieces are not planned. The auteur has made a career of capturing things on film that were never in the script but materialized from putting his characters in place and letting the film roll. Scenes like Robert DeNiro's unforgettable "You talkin' to me?!" moment as the downward-spiraling loner Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver, and DeNiro again with the Jake Lamotta "Who asked you?!" rant from yet another classic Raging Bull have come from Scorsese giving his enormously gifted players' leeway with the words on the paper.

Not feeling conflicted enough today? Martin Scorsese is making and hosting a show on Fox News Channel’s streaming service Fox Nation.
The series is an eight-part docudrama slated for November 2024. May we present: “Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints.”
Each hour-long episode will explore “the remarkable stories of eight men and women who risked everything to embody humanity’s most noble and complex trait — faith,” in Fox Nation’s words. Them’s the saints.
“Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints” was developed by Scorsese for Lionsgate Alternative Television. It was created by Matti Leshem. The docuseries is written by the frequent Scorsese collaborator Kent Jones; it will be directed by Elizabeth Chomko.
Scorsese and Leshem executive produce, as do Julie Yorn, Rick Yorn, Christopher Donnelly, Yoshi Stone, Craig Piligian, David Ellender, and Matt Loze. In addition to Lionsgate, the series was produced by Sikelia Productions, Weimaraner Republic Pictures, Lbi Entertainment, and Halcyon Studios.

Caleb Landry Jones will never forget his experience in DogMan. In writer/director Luc Besson’s trippy new thriller, the X-Men: First Class and Get Out star survived his fair share of creative chaos. For starters, he had to become an octopus. Best to expound upon later, so let’s start with some facts.
There were more than 120 trained (ish) dogs prancing around in Besson’s twisted revenge drama. Plus, canine handlers and the crew, of course. Meanwhile, the unconventional storyline gave Jones plenty to nosh on creatively, losing himself in a transformative performance as Douglas, a mysterious and crafty performer who uses a wheelchair and has a troubling past. Douglas works in drag for a living, and his deep connection to a pack of loyal canines is downright surreal.
“Dogs are dogs,” Jones told us about working with his four-legged companions. “Dogs would do whatever they want, no matter how you train them.

Martin Scorsese is no stranger to controversy. The violence in his crime films like Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Casino, and The Irishman certainly offended sensitive viewers, and Scorsese’s 1988 religious drama The Last Temptation Of Christ even inspired mass riots on behalf of extreme religious communities that took issue with the film’s depiction of Jesus of Nazareth. Recently, Scorsese’s comments have drawn the ire of an even more passionate group: comic book fans. His thoughts on the fate of the superhero genre and “content” in the modern industry have drawn some sharp responses from internet trolls.

Although the industry has innumerable young and talented directors working today, there’s no living filmmaker who represents the institution of filmmaking quite like the great Martin Scorsese. With over half a century and dozens of great films under his belt, Scorsese is perhaps the most influential artist of his generation, and seems to still approach his craft with the same enthusiasm that he did in his youth. Beyond his incredible work behind the camera, Scorsese has helped to produce and promote films by the next generation of great directors, and often chimes in when discussing relevant issues of film discourse. Given his undeniable reputation, it can be challenging to remember that Scorsese was once a scrappy young filmmaker who was having trouble getting his project made. Scorsese hit a hurdle during the production of Taxi Driver when the A-list star Dustin Hoffman turned down the lead role.

Martin Scorsese is no stranger to controversy, having made intense and violent films over his long and storied career as a director. There is a three-dimensionality to his characters that makes them totally unforgettable and deeply relatable. Think of Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) of Taxi Driver, a hero in his mind but a depraved lunatic to those looking in. Travis is deplorable, but the character's innate humanity brings him to life and keeps the viewer engaged. What shall become of this man? That is the genius of Martin Scorsese; he shows us the humanity of people who are largely inaccessible to the public, save for a newspaper headline.

Convent-set movies occupy a storied place in cinema history—one too vast to attempt summarization in this review. But it’s no matter: Immaculate stands to be a minor entry in both the crowded genre and in Sydney Sweeney’s present ascension to movie stardom. Sweeney produces and recruited Michael Mohan to direct Immaculate after their previous collaborations on TV series Everything Sucks! and erotic-thriller throwback The Voyeurs.
Narratively, Immaculate owes more to Dario Argento’s Suspiria than any nunsploitation picture. The setups are essentially identical: wide-eyed American girl (Sweeney as Sister Cecilia in this case) heads to an all-girls dormitory in Italy. Nefarious plotting by shadowy leaders is unveiled over the course of the narrative.
Both films contain a cold open that sees a young girl attempt escape before meeting her doom. Immaculate’s opening is quite tense, its best sequence. In the aftermath of this chilling intro, the...

Although the history of cinema is defined by great actor and director collaborators, there’s almost no working relationship more iconic than that of Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese. Ever since they first worked together on the 1973 gangster thriller Mean Streets, Scorsese and De Niro have pushed each other forward, taking on ambitious projects that would provoke hesitation from even the most accomplished performers and filmmakers. Their projects have been no stranger to controversial material; Taxi Driver incited outrage over its anti-establishment themes, and Goodfellas sparked discourse over its mythic portrayal of mafia culture. One classic film within their many collaborations that sparked strong reactions is the 1980 boxing drama Raging Bull. While the finished film contains multiple disturbing sequences, one particularly uncomfortable moment cut from Raging Bull sparked tension between Scorsese and screenwriter Paul Schrader.

Harrison Ford and Robert De Niro are two of the most accomplished actors of all-time. Ford is the ultimate hero, due to his roles as Han Solo, Indiana Jones, and Jack Ryan. De Niro has often played darker characters in movies like Taxi Driver, The Godfather Part II, and Goodfellas. Even in a comedy like Meet the Parents, De Niro is undeniably terrifying. Over the course of his career, De Niro has frequently collaborated with the iconic director, Martin Scorsese, including 2023's Killers of the Flower Moon. So it was no surprise when, in 1991, they joined forces again for Cape Fear, a remake of the Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck classic. Not only would De Niro and Scorsese be together once more, but arguably the most famous actor of the 80s, Harrison Ford, was almost brought on board as well.

No one can deny the legendary status Martin Scorsese has achieved, but like most filmmakers, he had to start somewhere small. Perhaps his greatest test as an independent filmmaker was Taxi Driver, a film whose production turned out to be nearly as dystopian as it looked on the big screen. Across nearly five decades, Scorsese has given us many different depictions of New York City, but none have been as grim and jaded as this one.

While the versatile filmmaker Martin Scorsese has helmed various genres, the gangster drama is the one that put him on the map, starting with the Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro starrer Mean Streets. The film’s success led to him being the master of the genre with films like Casino and The Irishman.
However, before he became the master of the genre, he was reportedly apprehensive about following through on one of his best films, Goodfellas. Scorsese was reportedly hesitant to tackle the genre again after Mean Streets and reportedly went to The Godfather star Marlon Brando, who surprisingly advised against pursuing it.

Known for her roles in Euphoria and The Handmaid’s Tale, Sydney Sweeney recently opened up during an SXSW Q&a session about her dream director. No, he is not Quentin Tarantino or Christopher Nolan; rather, she would prefer to collaborate with Martin Scorsese.
This may surprise some people considering Nolan’s standing as a visionary director, who recently won the Oscar for Oppenheimer. That being said, the two-time Emmy-nominated actress, 26, might have been drawn in by Scorsese’s storytelling and character development.
However, her admiration for Scorsese might not necessarily lead to any Academy Award wins. Despite being regarded as one of the greatest directors of all time, the Taxi Driver director has been snubbed by the Academy on several occasions.

Raging Bull is one of the best films in actor Robert De Niro’s career. The 1980 sports-drama film is based on the book Raging Bull: My Story, based on the life of boxer Jake Lamotta. John Mulaney's Hilarious Field Of Dreams Recap Doubled As His Oscar Host Audition - And He Nailed It
For award show junkies frustrated with the apparent laziness of a lot of the comedic material delivered by award hosts in recent years, comedian John Mulaney has often been a beacon of hope. Whereas Jimmy Kimmel fills his monologue with jokes about how much he hates sitting through long movies, Mulaney's monologue at the Governor's Award earlier this year demonstrated a clear love of film and appreciation towards everyone who makes them. (A stark contrast from Jo Koy's hacky material at the Golden Globes not long before.) Since then, people have been wondering why Mulaney's never been invited to host the Oscars, and Mulaney's latest speech (to present the award for Best Sound) has only raised the question further. He started off with this killer bit of sarcasm:
"Without sound, we wouldn't have been able to hear such classic lines as 'You're going to need a bigger boat,' 'I'll have what she's having,...

Martin Scorsese can do a lot of things — just don’t ask him to dance.
The 81-year-old filmmaker’s daughter Francesca says her dad has been open to do most anything in their wildly popular TikToks, but he’s not so keen on busting a move.
“He refuses to do dances,” Francesca told me Wednesday at Vanity Fair and Instagram’s Young Hollywood pre-Oscars party at Bar Marmont.

It’s not just Francesca prompting the “Taxi Driver” helmer to make videos. “He’ll text me and be like, ‘We need to make some more,’” she said. “Or we’re hanging out and he’s like, ‘Man, we got to do more videos.

The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress are Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”), Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”), America Ferrera (“Barbie”), Jodie Foster (“Nyad”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”). Our odds currently indicate that Randolph (3/1) will emerge victorious, followed in order of likelihood by Blunt (4/1), Brooks (4/1), Ferrera (9/2), and Foster (9/2).

The films in the running for the 2024 Best Original Score Oscar are “American Fiction,” “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our current odds indicate that “Oppenheimer” (3/1) will take the prize, followed in order of likelihood by “Killers of the Flower Moon” (4/1), “Poor Things” (9/2), “Indiana Jones” (9/2), and “American Fiction” (9/2).
Just two of the five musicians on this roster are returning contenders, with the first-timer subgroup consisting of Jerskin Fendrix (“Poor Things”), Laura Karpman (“American Fiction”), and Robbie Robertson (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Robertson, who died last August at age 80, is this category’s eighth posthumous nominee and first since 1977, when Bernard Herrmann earned dual bids for “Obsession” and “Taxi Driver” nearly 14 months after his death. He would be the fourth deceased composer to win an Academy Award, following Victor Young and “Limelight” (1973) duo Raymond Rasch and Larry Russell.

Robert Downey Jr. looks to have Best Supporting Actor locked up after he swept the precursors for his sterling turn in Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer.” But while Downey Jr. would be more than a deserving winner for his phenomenal performance, the Oscars always throws up a surprise or two on the actual night. Could we see an upset in Best Supporting Actor?
Downey Jr. is nominated alongside Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”), Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”), Sterling K. Brown (“American Fiction”), and Robert De Niro (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Gosling has lots of support for his sublime “Barbie” performance while Ruffalo and Brown also have their backers, too. However, the legendary De Niro could prove to be the closest challenger to Downey Jr. thanks to his iconic career and status.
This is De Niro’s ninth Oscar nomination. He’s been nominated for Best Actor five times — in 1977 for “Taxi Driver,...

No two people feel the exact same way about any film. Thus, Team Experience is pairing up to debate the merits of this year’s Oscar movies. Here's Juan Carlos Ojano and Nathaniel Rogers on Killers of the Flower Moon...
Carlos: Hi, Nathaniel! So excited to talk to you about this film. Confession time: this is the first time I've seen a Martin Scorsese film on the big screen, even though his works usually end up in my favorite films of their respective years. Maybe he is one of my favorite directors? But my respect for him goes beyond 'favorite'. This is also my first time seeing Leonardo DiCaprio (one of my favorite actors) on the big screen, with my "relationship" with him now spanning from Titanic to this. And my gosh, after months of buzz after its Cannes premiere, I can say I was floored and destroyed. Just in awe.

Jodie Foster, the two-time Oscar-winning actress riding high off her performances in Nyad and True Detective: Night Country, will be honored with a hand and footprint ceremony during the TCM Classic Film Festival, it was announced Tuesday.
Foster, 61, will leave her mark in cement in the courtyard of the iconic Tcl Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard on Friday, April 19 during the 15th annual event.
“The truth is Jodie Foster deserves a hand and footprint ceremony solely for her work in 1976 alone — films she made when she was 13 years old — Taxi Driver, Bugsy Malone, Freaky Friday and The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane. You could see her range already,” said TCM host Ben Mankiewicz in a statement.
“Nearly 50 years later, we have an answer to this question: ‘What is a Jodie Foster character?’ The answer is: There is nothing she can’t play. If you want evidence of that,...

Lily Gladstone's switch from Best Supporting to Best Actress nomination shakes up the Oscars 2024 race early on. Jodie Foster's nomination for Nyad marks her fifth overall but first in 29 years, with a potential long shot to win. Da'Vine Joy Randolph is the frontrunner for Best Supporting Actress, with a strong awards season sweep in her favor.
The Oscars 2024 race for Best Supporting Actress has a strong list of nominees, but only one of the nominated actresses can win. A major shakeup to the race unexpectedly arrived early when it was announced that Lily Gladstone was campaigning for a Best Actress Oscar nomination in 2024. She was presumed to be the frontrunner for the award in the supporting category, so her absence opened up a spot for another woman to be nominated and follow up Jamie Lee Curtis' win in 2023 for Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Wellness, self-help and “woo woo” culture are the backbone of Nora Turato’s new exhibition so, naturally, it brings the contemporary artist to Los Angeles for her first West Coast outing. Hosted by Wilshire Boulevard gallery Sprüth Magers, it’s not true!!! stop lying! runs from Feb. 28-April 27, and finds Turato playing with words and phrases by pulling text from about anywhere she finds inspiration — social media posts, commercials, movies, billboards and viral trends. She then places the text across enamel panels or paints them extra-large on walls. The former graphic designer even created a custom font for the pieces.
One wall features the word “authenticity” and another “haha” in supersized letters. The enamel pieces showcase phrases like “speaking my Truth!!!”, “become pointless,” “Sleep / it’s good for you! and “this isn’t me / I need some healing.” The Croatia-born artist who is based in Amsterdam also zeroed in on...

“Oppenheimer” continued to steamroll its path to Oscar glory on Sunday night, claiming the top prize at the 2024 Producers Guild of America Awards.
Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas, Chuck Roven and their producing team took home the Darryl F. Zanuck Award, which recognizes excellence in producing for a theatrical feature film. The prize has become perhaps the most important precursor to nabbing the Academy Award for best picture.
Thomas told the crowd that many may not know that Nolan, the film’s writer and director, excelled most in his role as producer: “He’s absolutely brilliant, we’ve worked on 12 films now.”
Nolan himself noted that he and Thomas had never won the Zanuck award, despite previous nominations. “Every time we’ve been in this room, we’ve felt so much support,” he said.

Natalie Portman revealed on a recent episode of the “Smartless” podcast (via People) that Jodie Foster once reached out to her after she heard Portman giving a speech about being sexualized as a young actor. Foster famously skyrocketed at 12 years old when she was cast in Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver” as a child sex worker. Portman, meanwhile, was 11 years old when she was cast in “Léon: The Professional,” which served as her own acting breakthrough.
“I did a speech at a Women’s March about being sexualized as a young actress, and she reached out to me after that, and we talked and it was amazing,” Portman said. “She’s still a role model.”
Portman said that she learned at a young age to project a tough exterior on film sets to avoid sexualization by potential predators.
“That kind of projection of seriousness protected me in a way,” she said.

In the narrator’s seat for David Hinton’s eloquent documentary on the filmmaking duo Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, Martin Scorsese is the ultimate fan. Tracing his all-around movie obsession to his first viewing of the U.K.-based pair’s 1948 tour de force, The Red Shoes, he leads us through a dozen of their features and a few of Powell’s solo efforts, connecting key sequences to memorable scenes in his own work. But beyond its clear explication of the films’ imaginative and technical power, Made in England is also a testament to mentorship and friendship; Scorsese was close to Powell, who died in 1990, for the last decade and a half of the British director’s life, and Powell married Scorsese’s longtime editor, Thelma Schoonmaker, in 1984.

Whether you love it or hate it, there’s no denying that Barbie was the biggest movie of the year, but what did Werner Herzog think of the film?
When asked by Piers Morgan if he was more of an Oppenheimer fan or a Barbie fan, Werner Herzog said he had only watched the first thirty minutes of Barbie, but had a rather unique assessment. “I have not seen Oppenheimer yet, but with Barbie, I managed to see the first half hour. I wanted to watch it because I was curious, and I still don’t have an answer, but I have a suspicion,” Herzog said. “Could it be that the world of Barbie is sheer hell? For a movie ticket, as an audience, you can witness sheer hell as close as it gets.” The director did add that he plans to watch the whole thing, so we’ll see...

Natalie Portman is chiming into the conversation surrounding the traditional film medium in the age of social media.
The Oscar-winning actress was recently asked in an interview with Vanity Fair about the changes she has seen in Hollywood throughout the years.
“The striking thing has been the decline of film as a primary form of entertainment,” she said. “It feels much more niche now. If you ask someone my kids’ age about movie stars, they don’t know anyone compared to YouTube stars or whatever.”
Social media’s impact on mainstream movie stars has been a recent debate, especially with the rise of influencers in the 21st century. Ana de Armas said last year that she feels the “concept of a movie star” has been ruined because the “mystery is gone,” while Jennifer Anniston previously responded to a “mass-fame phenomenon” comment, saying, “It’s dying. There are no more movie stars.

Few people have been as famous for as long as Jodie Foster. Born to a Los Angeles couple and raised solely by her mom, Foster made her onscreen debut in 1965 as a three-year-old girl in a commercial for sunscreen brand Coppertone. From there, she became a minor child star, appearing in Disney films and bit TV roles before attracting national attention for playing a young child prostitute in 1976’s “Taxi Driver.” The film — one part of a very diverse year for Foster that also included parts in bizarro gangster child musical “Bugsy Malone” and classic Disney comedy “Freaky Friday” — became instantly iconic and instantly controversial, but Foster was widely lauded for her work, and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
History is filled with child stars who achieve great things while young, only to either leave the business behind or find parts dry up as they age. That didn’t happen with Foster.

Jodie Foster's 2024 comeback features a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars for her role in Nyad. Foster's performance in Nyad marks her first Oscar nomination since 1994, reviving her career and awards season recognition. By starring in True Detective: Night Country, Foster could potentially secure both an Oscar and Emmy nomination in 2024.
Jodie Foster has finally snapped her 29-year drought at the Oscars, but this actually makes her 2024 comeback even better. Jodie Foster was one of the biggest names in Hollywood from the 1970s through the 1990s, and while she continued to find roles throughout the 2000s, the actress' awards season successes have been in a bit of a lull. However, 2024 has completely changed this, with Foster finding several recent successes. Jodie Foster's successful 2024 has done a lot to revitalize her career, with her track record at the Oscars making this situation even better.

Paul Schrader is now in his “post-dying” era.
After the Oscar-winning screenwriter shared his health ailments during the pandemic, Schrader recently revealed a new script he is working on. Schrader teased the project in a Q&a following a screening of “Patty Hearst” at the Roxy Cinema in New York City, hosted by Screen Slate (in the below video).
“I was sort of saturated with dying at that time,” Schrader said of his upcoming “Oh, Canada” adaptation of late friend and author Russell Banks’ final 2021 novel “Foregone.” “I had been to the hospital multiple times during Covid. Friends had been dying; they still are dying. And I thought, well, geez, if you’re going to make a film about dying, you better hurry up. And so I did it.”
Schrader added, “I feel like it went quite well, so now I’ll make a post-dying film.”

Before Steven Spielberg committed to doing Schindler’s List, Martin Scorsese had ties to the project for quite some time. Although Spielberg would eventually direct the classic feature, Scorsese still had some influence over the movie.

Schindler’s List wasn’t developed overnight. Spielberg was made aware of the book the film was based on shortly after E.T.’s release. It was supposed to be the filmmaker’s following film, but Schindler’s List took 10 years to hit theaters. This was partially because Spielberg didn’t have enough confidence in his abilities to translate Thomas Keneally’s book.

It’s not often that a doc about the transformative power of cinema will deliberately use bad clips of the movies it’s talking about, but that’s part of the point of this insightful, sprawling film, corralled by director David Hinton. Though the masterpieces made by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger at the height of their big-screen, Technicolor powers were visually impeccable, their subversive emotional power could still pack a punch through a 16-inch TV screen, even from the most scratched, butchered, and washed-out black-and-white prints.

Martin Scorsese Talks Cinema, Lasagna and The Rolling Stones at Freewheeling Berlin Press Conference
Everybody loves Marty.
Martin Scorsese got a hero’s welcome in Berlin, greeting journalists at a jam-packed press conference in Berlin on Tuesday, Feb. 20 — eager Marty fans were seen lining up two hours in advance to secure a seat — to receive rapturous praise from reporter after reporter.
“Thank you for making me the person I am today,” said one enthusiastic journo fan. One Georgian reporter invited him home for a glass of wine. Another, from Bulgaria, took a break from asking his question to act out his favorite scene from The Departed.
Most of the questions aimed at the ironic American director of Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and Goodfellas were less softballs than soft soap, with reporters as interested in Scorsese’s favorite food — his mother’s lasagna recipe — as the movies in his peerless filmography.
Asked about his favorite 30-second moment, Scorsese joked, “You mean in cinema?”
