The laughter during the first performance of the play includes a number of "canned" laughter performers who featured in many BBC light entertainment shows, including episodes of The Paul Daniels Magic Show (1979). It's unclear if it's intended to be artificial within the play as a meta commentary, or that viewers are supposed to believe it's real audience laughter.
