As the Epic Movie team announce they have Star Wars in their sights, might we have a chat about Mel Brooks' Spaceballs, amongst others?
Readers of this site may have read last week's news that there's to be a new Star Wars spoof. This film comes from the team who brought us Date Movie, Epic Movie, and apparently something called The Starving Games which blissfully passed me by. Jason Friedberg and Aaron Selzer make relatively cheap movies that, despite critical maulings, tend to make money at the box office. When I worked at a cinema, an eleven year old boy went to see Meet The Spartans three times, proclaiming it the best film he had ever seen.

In the Special Editions, the Rebo Band were big victims of George Lucas' digital wand. Here's how CGI changed them - seemingly forever...
In 1997, Star Wars began its ineluctable turn to the digital side. A New Hope, re-released in January that year, marked the first of George Lucas’s Special Edition revamps of his blockbuster saga; then 20 years old, the original 70s print was decaying. Effects shots were damaged. Darth Vader’s once imposing black mask and cloak had faded to a wan shade of pale blue.
To combat the ravages of time, Lucas embarked on an expensive and lavish restoration of the movies, improving the quality of the sound, re-balancing and correcting the colours and placing them back where they belonged: on the big screen. While fans were delighted at the prospect of seeing Star Wars in theatres again, Lucas’ reissues didn’t stop at...

The story of the Raiders Of The Lost Ark fan film is brought brilliantly to life in this new documentary...
I love fan films. I remember the very first fan film I ever saw: Hardware Wars (a Star Wars spoof). I’ve been hooked ever since. They’ve come a long way since then, some of them nowadays boasting a production value that almost rivals Hollywood productions. When I watch, for example, the Piano Guys’ Cello Wars (which in essence, is still a fan film), I’m amazed how much fan films have evolved, but my favorites remain the older ones, like Closet Cases Of The Nerd Kind (who can forget those singing mailboxes?).
But while some fan films of that era were happy to simply parody blockbuster movies, in 1982, two kids from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, Chris Strompolos (11 years old) and Eric Zala (12 years old) set our to produce a...

Over the years the Star Wars movies have inspired countless fan-made films to be created in the basements, living rooms, backyards and office buildings of the franchise's biggest fans. The popularity of these do-it-yourself movies has grown to the point that Lucasfilm and AtomFilms actually helped organize an annual Star Wars Fan Movie Challenge beginning in 2002, with awards being given out at San Diego Comic-Con each year. The first-ever Star Wars fan film to gain any kind of notoriety came only seven months after Star Wars: A New Hope hit theaters. Titled Hardware Wars, the film was written and directed by Ernie Fosselius and is basically just a straight spoof of the original movie, utilizing various items found around the house as props. Apparently George Lucas once went...

Shorts:
8. Bambi Meets Godzilla (1969).
Long before South Park broke out of Diy cartoon obscurity to become a cultural force, and You Tube allowed every aspiring animator to crawl out of the woodwork, independent animation was represented by things like this two minute national treasure. It was a burst of irreverence and innovation way back in the days when to see this sort of piece you had to set up a Super 8 or 16mm projector in the den to entertain folks for a special occasion - yes, handle actual celluloid (other short films like Hardware Wars, a satire of Star Wars featuring toasters battling other kitchen appliances, fell roughly in this same category).
