Quotes

  • Government Minister : As usual in these cases, everyone's acted out of the best possible motives, and as usual I am placed in an embarrassing and impossible position. I may have the best press officer in the world, but I doubt if even he could make this reflect to our credit. 'Dangerous Criminal Escapes'! And where does he escape from? Not from a prison, not even from a secure mental home, but from a cottage hospital bed! What was he doing there in the first place?

Psychiatrist : He was receiving treatment.

Prison Governor : Excuse me interrupting, Minister, but I did state officially my position: I was and am totally against drugs of an... experimental nature being used in the treatment of psychopathic criminals.

Government Minister : Yes, yes yes yes. You keep saying so. Go on. Enlighten me. Entertain me.

Psychiatrist : We had him in a familiar environment. We were using lysergic acid in conjunction with dream therapy. In this we endeavour to tap into the emotions available to the patent in his dreams. Of course, this should happen in a controlled environment.

Government Minister : You mean this criminal lunatic is walking around thinking he's in a dream?

    Psychiatrist : Yes.

Government Minister : My God, in my dreams I murder freely, pillage, loot and rape!

    Psychiatrist : You do?

  • Government Minister : When will we have him back in custody?

Prison Governor : We have all our men out now, it's a very isolated area. They would stand out like blood in snow. They can't stay free for long.

    Government Minister : They?

Prison Governor : There were 3 other patients from the prison. He took them with him. All in dream therapy.

Government Minister : Haven't people enough to be frightened of? Haven't they?

  • Government Minister : So that's Number One: a history of child assault leading up to mass murder.

Psychiatrist : [pedantically]  Three does not constitute mass.

Government Minister : To the press it does! And Number Two? Sex offenders too, I suppose, with violence.

Psychiatrist : He is interested in members of his own sex.

Government Minister : Am I supposed to be comforted by that? I do not understand you.

Prison Governor : Minister, either we lock these men up for the rest of their lives, or we attempt to cure them.

    Government Minister : Number Three?

Prison Governor : He's a very religious man.

Government Minister : Well, that's something.

Prison Governor : He has a tendency to believe that other people are the Devil and in need of... obliterating.
