Norway
At the Abigail premiere, Dan Stevens listed Norway among his four favorite vampire movies. “I just saw a great movie recently that I’d never heard of,” he told Letterboxd. “A Greek film called Norway, about a vampire who basically exists in the underground disco scene in ’80s Athens, and he can’t stop dancing ’cause he’s worried his heart will stop. And it’s lovely. It’s great.”
You won’t find a better endorsement than that, but allow me to elaborate. Imagine Only Lovers Left Alive meets What We Do in the Shadows by way of Yorgos Lanthimos. The...

At a certain point you care less about world premieres and fixate mostly on a festival’s repertory slate. And even by the high standards set with Cannes Classics or NYFF Revivals is this year’s Venice Classics in a class of its own. We could start at the new cuts for three of the greatest directors ever: One from the Heart is the latest film to be given a revision by Francis Ford Coppola, following recuts of Apocalypse Now, Twixt, and Dementia 13––to say nothing of restorations like The Rain People, of which we’re hosting the New York premiere next weekend––while Andrei Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev will debut in “the reconstruction of the complete original version, which was censored before its release and has never been seen until now.” Meanwhile one of Yasujiro Ozu’s greatest films, There Was a Father, has been amended by “recent rediscovery...

The lineup of recently restored films in Venice Classics, which is curated by the festival’s artistic director Alberto Barbera in collaboration with Federico Gironi, was unveiled on Friday.
“The Exorcist” is screened, 50 years after it was produced by Warner Bros., alongside Disney’s “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm,” starring Shirley Temple and directed by “the prolific and sometimes brilliant” Allan Dwan, to mark the Hollywood studios’ 100th anniversaries.

Charlie is ready to take the stage in the new trailer and poster for the upcoming horror comedy film Cannibal Comedian from writer/director Sean Haitz.
The preview follows a psychopathic cannibal (Aaron Prager) fed up with his lack of ambition who decides to try his hand at standup comedy in an attempt to satisfy his appetite for normalcy, explains the press release, which includes poster art designed by Rafael Aráujo.
“Set in the modern-day American west, the film pairs dark, over-the-top humor and rampaging horror at full throttle. Littered with scary, grotesque, and wildly energetic characters, Cannibal Comedian is a love letter to stand-up comedy and horror films such as Tobe Hooper’s 1974 cannibal classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, of which two of the original cast members lend their talents here with involvement from original cast members Edwin Neal, most known for his unforgettable role as The Hitchhiker (A.

Mexico’s Bruno Santamaría, Argentina’s Martín Benchimol and Turkey’s Selman Nacar proved three of the big winners among San Sebastian Industry Awards, announced Wednesday.
João Paulo Miranda, already a young star on Brazil’s film scene after “Memory House,” meanwhile won the Ikusmira Berriak Award.
A Chicago Golden Hugo winner for doc feature “Things We Dare Not Do,” Santamaría swept two awards at the fest’s Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum, a Mecca for Latin America auteurs and their producers seeking vital co-production partners as state funding prospects have plunged across the region.
Also written by Santamaría, its heavily autobiographical story, set in the ’90s, follows 10-year-old boy Bru, whose father is diagnosed with HIV, sparking his parents break up.“I want to film the glances and conversations that my parents had in silence and which I couldn’t observe as a child and find some sense [in what happened],” Santamaría told Variety.

Evan Peters has left fans predicting they’ll have nightmares watching his portrayal of Jeffrey Dahmer in Netflix’s forthcoming biopic series.
The American Horror Story star will play the serial killer in Ryan Murphy’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
The series will explore how Dahmer, who is regarded as one of the world’s worst murderers and was convicted of killing 16 boys and young men between 1978 to 1991, was able to evade police capture for so long.
On Friday (16 September), the first trailer for Dahmer was released. It shows Evans’s Dahmer bringing men back to his flat, while his neighbour (Niecy Nash) complains about the smell and sound of screaming from his home.
The trailer prompted reactions of shock from viewers, who said that Peters looked “perfectly” like the serial killer.
“He looks like him a bit too much,” one Twitter user wrote.

“How should we proceed / Without things getting too heavy?” asks Marcus Mumford on his first solo album. It’s a reasonable question to ask of both himself and his listeners, because the 10 raw songs on this self-titled record find the singer processing the sexual abuse he experienced as a child. He was apparently so concerned about triggering other victims that he sent all the lyrics to a trauma specialist to ensure he’d “reflected reality”.
This doesn’t mean he pulls any punches. The self-described former “fat kid from London”, who started out playing drums for Laura Marling and formed his own nu-folk band Mumford & Sons in 2007, has always worn his heart on his sleeve. His parents were both church leaders and he brought a preacher’s zeal into full-throated stadium anthems such as “I Will Wait”. Niecy Nash-Betts, Richard Jenkins, Penelope Ann Miller, Shaun J. Brown and Colin Ford round out the cast. Marcus Mumford has said he used to see albums as ‘adverts for live shows’ before getting advice from Neil Young ten years ago.
The singer and songwriter has been the frontman of folk-rock group Mumford & Sons since the band’s inception in 2007.
The Mumford and Sons frontman said that a conversation with Neil Young changed his perspective on the process of recording music.
"Neil Young sat me down about 10 years ago and told me the importance of recorded music, and that I should pay more attention to the way in which we record because I was always [like], ‘Ah, it’s just an advert for a live show,” he told NME in a recent interview.

Marcus Mumford’s solo debut opens in a place of anger: “I can still taste you, and I hate it,” the Mumford & Sons leader seethes over gently strummed guitars, a whisper of feedback serving as a signal of his bubbling rage. “Cannibal,” the first track on (self-titled), was written by Mumford during the pandemic’s lockdowns, when isolation was forcing him to grapple with his inner life; as he revealed in an August interview, he was also dealing with the idea of telling others about abuse he endured as a six-year-old.

Iranian directors Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof, both of whom are currently imprisoned and being detained by the Iranian government, are urging attendees of the Venice Film Festival to continue to push back against censorship and support independent expression.
The directors in a joint statement distributed by the Venice Film Festival on Saturday to press said that “The hope of creating again is a reason for existence.”
“The history of Iranian cinema witnesses the constant and active presence of independent directors who have struggled to push back censorship and ensure this art’s survival,” Panahi and Rasoulof said jointly. “While on this path, some were banned from making films, and others were forced into exile or reduced to isolation. And yet, the hope of creating again is a reason for existence. No matter where, when, or under what circumstances, an independent filmmaker is either creating or thinking about creation. Ruggero Deodato's 1980 gore flick "Cannibal Holocaust" is one of those rare films that does not lose power with age. Its extreme gore and rough, vérité style are so incredibly raw it landed Deodato in court under the suspicion that he had made a genuine snuff film. This had been compounded by how the cast had — as a bit of a marketing stunt — signed contracts not to conduct any promotional interviews. It wasn't until Deodato was able to produce the "missing" cast members in court that he was exonerated. It's worth noting that "Holocaust" still contains documentary footage of animals being killed, so it's still a difficult sit. Indeed, "Holocaust" went on to be censored in many countries. To this day, it is held up as a gold standard of extreme horror cinema.
Deodato had previously directed several horror, peplum, and poliziotteschi movies, and he went on to make a dozen more,...

If there was one noticeable trend at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival it was the use of black-and-white film. It proved a winner for experimental biopic Dear Thomas in the Official Competition and for Other Cannibals, which won Best First Feature. But there was an award for most playful use of monochrome, it would go to Emre Erdogdu for his breezy dive into the life of drug dealer Yilmaz (Halil Babür) whose fix of choice is the admiration of others. The others in question are the great and the good looking of the hip Istanbul neighbourhood where Yilmaz lives, including musicians, actors and screenwriters who call on him for their artificial highs offering in return, if he could but see it, largely artificial friendship.

His wife (Patricia Lopez Arnaiz), at first reluctant, agrees to the scheme whereby the girl, played by luminous newcomer Irene Virguez, hides out in their remote home until she gives birth. Everything seems to go smoothly until the father of the teen mother’s child, whom she’s still in love with, turns up.
Barcelona-based Film Factory, which also handled the international sales of Cuenca’s acclaimed “Cannibal,” is presenting “The Daughter” to buyers at the Malaga Screenings.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for the “Evil” Season 2 finale, “C Is for Cannibal,” including the ending.]
Doubt is a common villain, particularly in stories where faith plays an outsized role. One of the real joys of watching “Evil” come into its own over the course of Season 2 is watching it embrace such a fundamental idea. The Paramount+ series has its share of lore — what is Catholicism if not a few millennia of meticulously documented tradition? — but it’s also thrived in a dangerous grey zone between out-and-out procedural and season-long religious Big Bads, spinning something thrilling with each passing week.
For a show that so easily could quadruple down on a Pazuzu of the Week framework, the Season 2 finale of “Evil” brought into focus a different kind of goal: connect its three main characters through the basic idea of not knowing what comes next. Kristen (Katja Herbers) still has lingering scars (some of them crucifix-shaped) from...

The 1980 Italian cannibal exploitation movie "Cannibal Holocaust" has become the stuff of legend. It's a gruesome fake documentary that features some very real on-screen animal death and very convincing human kills. It was so convincing, in fact, that director Ruggero Deodato was arrested and charged with murder.
When "Cannibal Holocaust" came out in 1980, found footage horror wasn't really a thing yet. Cannibal films, a subgenre under the exploitation umbrella, were popular with many filmmakers because they allowed for lots of gore and cheap shooting locations in tropical locales.
Enter Deodato and his frequent collaborator, screenwriter Gianfranco Clerici.
Both had previously worked on the cannibal flick "Jungle Holocaust/Last Cannibal World," and they decided to take...

Fernando León de Aranoa’s “The Good Boss,” starring Javier Bardem, Alejandro Amenábar’s first drama series “La Fortuna,” and Carlos Saura’s “Rosa Rosae. A Civil War Elegy” head a robust Spanish presence at September’s San Sebastian Film Festival.
Also in the mix are new films from Jonás Trueba, Iciar Bollaín and Paco Plaza, all playing in main competition, plus Daniel Monzón’s Warner Bros.-distributed “Las leyes de la frontera,” selected as San Sebastián’s closing night film, and “The Daughter,” from Manuel Martín Cuenca. “Rosa Rosae” will screen at the San Sebastian’s opening night ceremony on Sept. 17.
World premiering at Venice, Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas movie shoot comedy “Official Competition” will open San Sebastian’s best of fests section Perlak.

Inside "Area 5150": Cinema Retro's Mark Cerulli Takes You Behind The Scenes On An Indie Horror Flick
Mark Cerulli (seated) with Aaron Prager, Matthew Lucero, August Kingsley and Rob Wight. (Photo by David Rubalcava)
Cinema Retro columnist Mark Cerulli has long championed indie horror films. They generally have one thing in common: the need to use innovative methods to compensate for less-than-extravagant budgets. Cerulli finally decided the best way to experience what it's like making one of these films was to participate in aspects of its creative process. Here is his report.
By Mark Cerulli
As a writer/producer for HBO, I had been on a number of film sets to do interviews and shoot “B-roll”… tolerated, sometimes even welcomed but never a part of the actual film. As a scriptwriter I had also piled up an impressive number of “passes” (my favorite was from Steven Seagal’s nutritionist!). Then in a Hollywood coincidence I met director Sean Haitz at the premiere of Rob Zombie’s Three from Hell.

TetroVideo is at it again, giving all you extreme horror freaks what you want. They've just announced three limited editions of Marian Dora's Cannibal. Their previous edition sold out so there is a market for this out there. Don't tell me who you are. Cannibal is based on the true story of Armin Meiwes, known as "the Rotenburg Cannibal", who killed and ate a voluntary victim (Bernd Jürgen Armando Brande) whom he met on the Internet in 2001. While something like this is certainly not up my ally I do appreciate TetroVideo's efforts here to put out extremely limited editions. The Golden Edition is limited to just ten copies, each individually hand numbered and each disc has it's own design too....

Jónsi and Robyn have shared a dizzying blast of future pop, “Salt Licorice,” set to appear on the Sigur Rós frontman’s next solo album, Shiver, out October 2nd on Krunk.
“Salt Licorice” was produced by Avant-pop favorite A.G. Cook, who takes a grinding industrial intro and shapes it into a jagged, propulsive but always engrossing pop stomp. Robyn and Jónsi split vocal duties, coming together on the track’s hook, “You spread your wings, T-shirt, shoulder blades/Your skinny waist is making me throw up/Ooh my Scandinavian pain.

For every previously unknown single that reaches ubiquity after earning the affection of TikTok users — from Sub Urban’s “Cradles” to StaySolidRocky’s “Party Girl” to Claire Rosinkranz’s “Backyard Boy” — there seems to be a random oldie that experiences a sudden resurgence thanks to the app: Ciara’s “Get Up,” Ke$ha’s “Cannibal,” La Roux’s “Bulletproof.”
The latest is “Because of You,” a gliding 2007 single from the R&b triple-threat — singer-writer-producer — Ne-Yo. The song has now soundtracked more than 800,000 TikTok videos, many of which feature a pair...

Jónsi has recruited Cocteau Twins’ Liz Fraser for “Cannibal,” his latest offering from his upcoming solo album Shiver, out October 2nd via Krunk.
The song is accompanied by a video directed by the Sigur Rós frontman and Giovanni Ribisi; it features a figure in a hazy, heavenly abyss dancing as Jónsi and Fraser’s vocals begin. Just beyond the three-minute mark, the song increases in tempo and erupts into new sonic territory. “You know it’s only out of love,” Jónsi sings, Fraser echoing him.

After a few relatively quiet weeks to wrap up June’s home media releases, July comes roaring back with a slate of titles that genre fans will definitely want to add to their Blu-ray and DVD collections. Arrow Video has been staying extremely busy as of late, with three different releases coming out on Tuesday: Black Rainbow from Flash Gordon director Mike Hodges, Zombie for Sale, and Teruo Ishii’s Inferno of Torture. Criterion Collection is also celebrating an all-time sci-fi classic this Tuesday, The War of the Worlds, and if you haven’t had a chance to check it out on Shudder, Belzebuth is headed to both Blu-ray and DVD this week as well.

There’s a long and noble tradition of adapting movies into video games. Over the years, we’ve seen everything from The Godfather to Napoleon Dynamite to Back to the Future adapted into the medium, but it’s safe to say nobody predicted that Cannibal Holocaust would join them.
Ruggero Deodato’s notoriously gory and violent 1980 film pioneered the found footage format and seemed so realistic that the director was put on trial for the murder of his cast (the charges were dropped when the actors confirmed they weren’t dead). Yesterday, Deodato and Fantastico Studios announced that the ‘cannibal cycle’ would continue in Cannibal, due to hit all major consoles (even the Switch!) and PC in November 2020. And here’s how the announcement went down:
A Cannibal Holocaust video game existing should only open the door for more horror movie video games. What I'm saying here is give me a puppet master video game.

Ruggero Deodato’s 1980 film Cannibal Holocaust is a horror classic. It pioneered what would become known as the found footage genre, which eventually spawned classics like The Blair Witch Project, Rec and the Paranormal Activity movies. It tells the tale of an American film crew becoming lost and brutally murdered in the Amazon rainforest, with the footage being discovered later.
Cannibal Holocaust is notoriously violent, with the gore being so realistic that authorities assumed that Deodato made a real snuff film. He was even charged with the murder of cast members. His defense wasn’t helped by the fact that the cast had agreed to lay low for a year so the director could make audiences believe in the movie’s fiction. Fortunately, he managed to get in touch with them before he was convicted and got them to confirm that they hadn’t actually been fed to cannibals.

The Cannibal sub-genre usually divides the viewer in to one of two camps: horror fans who deem it “necessary” as part of their schooling to watch the gut munchers of the decade from the early ‘70s to early ‘80s, and those who completely stay clear after hearing stories of real life animal mutilation and on screen rape, not to mention an anatomical eye for grisly (and gristly) detail in that uniquely unsubtle, very Italian way. If you choose to wade through the jungle, there are simply no better guides than the denizens at Severin Films, who offer up a superb new disc of Umberto Lenzi’s Eaten Alive! (1980). If you’re new to this fascinating facet of horror, you might as well jump in here – there is no shallow end.

It’s undeniable that prequel comics that tie into franchises in other media are steadily becoming a bigger deal. Case in point, a still young 2017 has already seen the likes of 24: Legacy and Riverdale penciled in to get that very treatment. And, much like those two, the same could be said for The Great Wall: Last Survivor, the subject of today’s review.
Set sixty years before the events depicted in The Great Wall, the upcoming major motion picture starring Matt Damon and Willem Dafoe, The Last Survivor chronicles the journey of a young man named Bao, seamlessly blending history, mythology and fantasy. So, if you happen to be a fan of any of those topics – or a combination of the three – this is something you may want to give a look.
Speaking of taking a gander at the content, it must be said that artist Gian Fernando...

Even in the bleakest of movies there’s usually somebody who makes it to the end. Sure, they’ll probably be forever scarred by the events and they’ll never lead a normal live, but they’re alive. Just think of the survivors from each Texas Chain Saw Massacre; that’s ten years of therapy bills at the very least.
Audiences like a little bit of a silver lining in a narrative, the feeling that no matter how traumatic things get someone will have the courage to survive. Yet some movies have such a black heart that they’ll even deny people that much. No happy ending, no survivors and, in the most extreme cases, total apocalypse. Usually this will happen in some low budget horror movie or dark comedy, though some big budget movies have dared to take this risk too.

It has taken a while for Eli Roth's "The Green Inferno" to land in cinemas after doing runs, starting in 2013 at the Toronto International Film Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival, and Sitges - Catalonian International Film Festival. Read More: Review: Eli Roth's Cannibal Horror 'The Green Inferno' A homage and love letter to the Italian cannibal exploitation/horror films of the 1980s such as Umberto Lenzi’s 1981 “Cannibal Ferox” — the title is taken from a “film within a film” that screens in Ruggero Deodato’s 1980 cannibal exploitation flick “Cannibal Holocaust” — Roth’s ‘Green Inferno’ follows a group of young, idealistic, privileged, and pretentious college activists who travel from New York to the Amazon in order to save the rainforest and a vanishing native tribe.
