His Roles May Veer Far from the Straight and Narrow, but John Hurt Acts on a Fast Track
Only one part is now out of the question: Husband.
A depraved Roman emperor, a brilliantly outrageous homosexual, an eccentric junkie convict, a tortured student murderer, a pitiable sideshow freak, an astronaut who has his chest ripped open from the inside by an alien monster… Hardly everyday folk, but 40-year-old British actor John Hurt—who has portrayed them all—is no mundane talent. “I don’t believe there is any such thing as an ordinary person,...

A charismatic drifter brings horror to an Australian suburb in this shocking take on a notorious real-life crime
The days of heroic Australian films celebrating the settlers coming to terms with their mysterious new land and discovering a national identity – Picnic at Hanging Rock, Gallipoli, The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith – are long past. That old spirit is only to be found now in hollow, self-mocking form in Baz Luhrmann's camp epic, Australia.
Current films are more concerned with exploring the fringes or the underside of down under. Earlier this year some of the country's best actors appeared in the remarkable Animal Kingdom, a psychological story loosely based on fact about a Melbourne family involved in armed robbery, drugs and large-scale larceny. They're unromantic descendants of the Kelly gang, people to whom crime has been a way of life for several generations.

Lindsay Lohan arrives at the Airport Courthouse in Los Angeles on Wednesday

Lindsay Lohan is once again headed back to the sadly familiar confines of the Los Angeles County jail. The troubled actress appeared in court Wednesday morning (November 2) and was sentenced to 30 days in jail for violating her probation for not attending court-mandated therapy sessions and getting tossed from a community-service gig.
According to TMZ, Lohan admitted in court Wednesday that she violated the terms of her probation from a theft case by getting booted from her community-service assignment at the Downtown Women's Center.
Judge Stephanie Sautner was adamant that she would not put up with any more slipups from Lohan, telling her, "This is known as putting the keys to jail in the defendant's pocket ... the first time you violate,...

“Aim High” is an original action web series on Facebook. Yes, they’re doing that now. Welcome to the 21st century, kids. It stars that guy from “Twilight” and that girl from “Friday Night Lights”, and it’s surprisingly good. I don’t mean for that to sound like a backhanded compliment, but fact is, I wasn’t expecting it to be as nicely written, acted, and directed as the first two episodes were. The scripts, by series creators Heath Corson and Richie Keen are witty and clever, and the premise is, of course, nothing too original, but it’s one of those “just go with it” ideas. And it’s violent, too. You wouldn’t think it would be violent, but it’s surprisingly a lot more violent than I had expected. And did I mention it’s surprisingly really good? Nick Green is a top agent for the Us government – effective,...

Lindsay Lohan arrives in court on Wednesday

Lindsay Lohan may be headed back to jail following a "blistering" hearing Wednesday (October 19) in a Los Angeles courthouse where a judge revoked the troubled actress' probation and had her led out of the proceedings in handcuffs.
According to TMZ, Judge Stephanie Sautner ruled that Lohan had violated the conditions of her probation — stemming from a 2011 arrest on theft charges — and set a hearing for November 2, at which time Lohan could receive a sentence of up to a year and a half in jail. Lohan, dressed in a flowing white Fendi dress with matching scarf tied around her neck, was placed in handcuffs and exited the courtroom, where she was processed by the L.A. County Sheriff's Office. Martin Scorsese has many things: the respect of his filmmaking peers, a secure place in the pantheon of Hollywood’s great directors, and an Academy Award, to boot. He also has a lot of hobbies, including film preservation and rock music. Another is a longtime fascination with the works of Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky, especially his novel “The Gambler.”
Even before 1976’s “Taxi Driver,” which clearly owes to Dostoevsky’s “Crime and Punishment” and, more notably, “Notes from the Underground,” the director had wanted to adapt “The Gambler” for the screen. In the early 1970s, he was shell-shocked when “Taxi Driver” screenwriter Paul Schrader gave his version of the novel to Brian De Palma instead of him. The result was “Obsession.”
Yet this event did not destroy Scorsese’s passion for Dostoevsky. Years later, in 1989, he offered his take on the Alexei/Polina angle from “The Gambler” in “Life Lessons,...

Arguably the two most perfect British movies were made in the same year, 1949 – Carol Reed's The Third Man and Robert Hamer's Kind Hearts and Coronets. In Hamer's movie, Dennis Price, the gay, Oxford-educated son of a brigadier-general, gives his greatest performance as the aggrieved Edwardian shop assistant revenging himself on the establishment for his mother's humiliation, and he's certainly not overshadowed by Alec Guinness's protean virtuosity.
His sequence with Guinness as his senile, snobbish clerical victim is exquisitely funny and most beautifully lit by Douglas Slocombe. Equally good are Valerie Hobson and Joan Greenwood as the two women waiting for Price when he's released from the condemned cell.
Hamer had a particular liking for the late-Victorian/Edwardian world and was a great Francophile. Both passions are reflected by two classic black comedies that influenced the film: Lord Arthur Savile's Crime, which Oscar Wilde wrote just after reading Crime and Punishment,...

Anyone who reads literature in translation probably has some inkling of the effort it takes a specialist to mold foreign masterworks into readable prose that feels alive and inviting. Some translators have earned renown for their impeccable renditions of the classics — Lydia Davis comes to mind — but such formidably intelligent people are accustomed to working, for the most part, in complete obscurity, unknown except to the book publishers who commission their interpretive labors and those who bother to notice bylines. Until her death last year at age 87, Svetlana Geier was the most distinguished translator of Dostoyevsky in Germany, having shouldered the monumental task (beginning in 1992) of rendering the Russian novelist’s “five elephants” (Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, The Brothers Karamazov, The Devils, and The Raw Youth) into her adopted language. Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Geier began her work in the late fifties, but developed a special passion for the...

Actress reportedly tested positive for alcohol and faces possible jail time.

Just weeks from completing her home detention sentence, troubled actress Lindsay Lohan is due in a Los Angeles court on Thursday (June 23) after allegedly violating her probation by testing positive for alcohol.
According to TMZ, the 24-year-old actress tested positive for alcohol earlier this month and could be facing additional jail time if the probation department has its way. The gossip site reported that Lohan was tested twice last week for drugs and alcohol and that unnamed sources said she tested positive for alcohol on one of the tests and negative on another; both were reportedly negative for drugs. One of the tests is reported to have taken place after a rooftop barbecue party Lohan had at her...

In his latest World Cinema column, Nick looks back at the work of legendary Japanese animator, Osamu Tezuka, creator of Astro Boy…
When we think of Japanese animation, we normally think of two distinct branches, the gorgeously sumptuous delights of Studio Ghibli, or the more visceral thrills of anime. Both could be technically considered one and the same, but to the broader international audience, I think they would be considered separate.
Both demand appreciation from film fans and both have their following, in Japan and internationally. Barring the obvious differences between styles and general content, you could argue the main point of separation between the two is authorship. While Studio Ghibli is synonymous with Hayao Miyazaki and is often considered one and the same, anime is a much more open and far-ranging proposition.
There are numerous studios, including Madhouse (famous for Ninja Scroll and Trigan), Tms Entertainment (Akira) and Production I.G.

California prosecutors decided that insufficient evidence exists to file charges against the actress in the alleged scuffle.

There's been precious little good news for Lindsay Lohan lately. After ending her longest stint to date in rehab earlier this year, the troubled starlet has been attempting a career reboot that's been thrown off course by her upcoming trial on a charge of felony theft.
But the "Mean Girls" star finally got a break on Tuesday when prosecutors in Riverside County, California, announced that after weeks of investigation they had decided not to file a battery charge against the 24-year-old. According to Reuters, the District Attorney's office determined there was insufficient evidence to charge the actress with a crime in the incident, which stemmed from an alleged altercation Lohan had with a staff member at the Betty Ford Center in December during a rehab stay.

(Editor’s note: Owf’s Stu Cummins unfortunately had some personal issues to resolve this week, so our Top 10 Tuesday has now come on a Thursday! Tom Barnard has stepped in with this top ten list celebrating Woody Allen…)
To celebrate the release last week of You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger, the following is my top ten selection of the famous neurotic’s greatest cinematic individuals. Entries are listed in chronological order, and aren’t specific to characters played by Allen himself.
10. Miles Monroe (Woody Allen), Sleeper (1973)
There’s a tendency to pigeonhole Woody Allen characters as reoccurring versions of himself. After all, they often share mannerisms and a unionised sense of morality, but real pleasure can be gained from spotting the fundamental personality differences in these very individual creations. The aforementioned similarities became somewhat of a negative critique in Allen’s work as his career hit its peak in the late 70s.

She's not out of the woods quite yet, but Lindsay Lohan is feeling optimistic about her life and her career. In her first post-rehab interview, Lohan sat down with "Extra" on Tuesday night (the second part of the chat from her new Los Angeles home will air Wednesday night) and said she's finally ready to reboot her stalled career.
"I feel great. I feel happy," said the "Mean Girls" actress, who is still facing potential jail time over her alleged theft of a $2,500 necklace. "There's always things, you know, bumps we have in the road, and as long as I am focusing on the one thing I need to put first in my life, which is my recovery and stuff, and I'm doing good and that's most important for me.

The career paths of most former “child stars” are usually clearly set by their early twenties. In the case of Amanda Seyfried, after playing the necessarily simple part of Karen Smith in Mean Girls, she had more or less settled into a steady stream of prestigious Us television series broken up, on occasion, by minor film roles. However, having been cast in the title role in the upcoming Red Riding Hood, it appears that Miss Seyfried is now in demand as a leading lady in the fickle world of Hollywood cinema and has been signed up to star in Heitor Dahlia’s thriller, Gone.

Hours after being arraigned on Wednesday on a felony charge of grand theft in connection with the alleged lifting of a $2,500 necklace from a Venice, California, jewelry store, troubled actress Lindsay Lohan posted $40,000 bail and was released from jail.
E! News reported that Lohan's first order of business after being sprung was to tweet a link to a photo of her with Kanye West taken at a February 4 dinner party for designer Giuseppe Zanotti. That snap was reportedly taken down a short time later, at which point she responded to a tweet of support from "Celebrity Rehab" star Dr. Drew Pinsky.
Pinsky wrote, "I am mortified how @Lindsaylohan is getting attacked when she is so fragile and just establishing her sobriety. Not at all what she needs." Lohan appeared to be grateful for the gesture,...

Russian director Andrei Konchalovsky's most recent film, The Nutcracker in 3D (2010), was a box office flop in the States. However, in the past Konchalovsky has also known great success, including the award winning House of Fools (2002) which took the 'Grand Jury Prize' at the Venice Film Festival.
As a film maker, Konchalovsky has certainly had a varied career, from working with Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell in Tango & Cash (1989), creating a TV adaptation Homer’s The Odyssey for HBO, and also directing numerous Russian language films, including the highly regarded Uncle Vanya (1970) and The First Teacher (1964), his debut feature made whilst he was still a student.
Last week, Cine-Vue travelled to Pushkin House in Holborn to ask Konchalovsky how he felt about the forthcoming Directorspective at London's Barbican Centre, who his influences were, and what he thought about living and working in Hollywood.

Well, this is awkward. Ranylt and I forgot to call each other and coordinate our outfits so now we're left wearing the same black dress with a flouncy white bow much like Kelly and Brenda on that episode of "90210." That is to say, it's unofficial Crime and Punishment Day here at Pajiba! Warden threw a party in the county jail! Let's rock.
In light of your stunning, vociferous, some (jM) might even say, "explosive" response to the list I posted yesterday, I thought I would challenge your clever minds a bit with a list of very narrow proportions. Movies about prisoners based on books! Ha! Suck on it, you fecalphiles. Once I started thinking about it, however, I realized the prison movie is one I'm awfully fond of. Most of the films on this list will stop my thumb mid-click whenever they are on. I've even been known to sit through them twice (thank you,...

Lindsay Lohan is in the midst of her latest attempt to reboot a career that has been derailed by a series of trips to rehab, arrests and time behind bars. But the 24-year-old actress, who reportedly left the Betty Ford Center on Monday after three months of court-ordered substance-abuse rehab, may not be out of the clouds just yet.
CNN reported that a Riverside County Sheriff's Department spokesperson said that Lohan violated her probation when she allegedly got into an altercation with a former staff worker at the Ford Center.
The staffer, Dawn Holland, was fired in the wake of the December 12 incident after the Center claimed she leaked information about her encounter with Lohan to the tabloid press.

After speaking out about a December 12 incident with Lindsay Lohan at the Betty Ford rehab center, Dawn Holland has dropped her charges against the embattled starlet. The former rehab worker released a statement to TMZ noting that she wouldn't pursue a case against Lohan.
"Dawn will not continue to press charges against Lindsay, nor will she be assisting any further in the investigation or prosecution," Holland's lawyer, Kevin Davidson, said. Davidson continued that "a crime has quite simply not been committed by Ms. Lohan."
Holland is reportedly a recovering addict herself and, Davidson added, she does not want "in any way, shape or form to do anything that would violate Lindsay's probation or cause an arrest."

Public Health officials won't say why they're conducting investigation into Betty Ford Center.

Police aren't the only ones conducting an investigation into Monday's alleged altercation between Lindsay Lohan and a staff member at the Betty Ford Center rehab clinic in Los Angeles. According to The Associated Press, the California Department of Public Health has also launched an investigation at the Ford clinic.
Though they wouldn't comment on the nature of the probe or if it were directly related to that apparent scuffle between the "Mean Girls" actress and a Betty Ford staffer, the news comes just a day after the center fired the employee for giving an on-camera interview with gossip website TMZ.
Experts believe the interview could violate state and federal medical privacy laws that prohibit medical personnel from discussing the treatment of patients. Lohan is still under investigation for misdemeanor battery in the case.

Sebastián Cordero’s 2009 film, Rage reminded me of two films, Steve McQueen’s 2008
film “Hunger,” and George Sluzier’s 1988 thriller, “The Vanishing.” Considering how much I
despised both of those films, bearing similarity to each of them is not a good sign. Rage is just
as pretentious as “Hunger,” and just as boring as “The Vanishing.”
Films that take themselves seriously are not automatically bad films (unless the situation calls for
it not to, but never mind). Some great films have been serious dramas. But a film of any kind
has to give us something that makes us not hate ourselves for watching it. “Rage” doesn’t do
that. In every area, this Mexican film is a failure. It’s neither romantic nor suspenseful. Worst
of all, it’s a film so boring that I could barely get myself to hate it.

Lindsay Lohan arrives at court Friday

Despite facing the prospect of being sent back to jail again following a probation violation, troubled actress Lindsay Lohan was given a break Friday (October 22) by a Los Angeles judge. Lohan, who voluntarily checked herself into the Betty Ford Center last month after failing court-mandated drug tests, was ordered by Judge Elden Fox to remain in rehab until January 3, 2011, according to the Los Angeles Times.
"I'm serious about that [date]. You're staying there past the new year, and there's a reason for that," Fox told a tearful Lohan. "I'm not going to be manipulated."
The district attorney in the case had recommended that Lohan serve 180 days in county jail for her violation, but the judge preferred that she receive treatment until the end of the year and then be subject...

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps is the follow up to Oliver Stone’s 1987 Wall Street and he is back in the directing chair here. The film surrounds the recent economic meltdown that hit America and the rest of the world.
The film has an impressive cast including Michael Douglas, Shia Labeouf, Carey Mulligan, Josh Brolin, Frank Langella, Susan Sarandon and the mighty Eli Wallach.
We were lucky enough to sit down at a roundtable with Oliver Stone this week and you can read what Oliver Stone had to say below.
On how and why he came to direct Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.
In 2006 I said yes lets try something, Stephen Shiff wrote a good script but it was celebrating the hedge fund culture, you know there was Russian hedge funders in Monaco and there was a scene with a guy who had a submarine in the harbour of New York.

Certainly qualifying as one of the more intriguing rumors to come out of the mill in some time: Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway and Amanda Seyfried as Daisy Buchanan in the long-gestating adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s American classic The Great Gatsby (which also suggests repetitive undertones post-2008 economic collapse).
The news come via Production Weekly, and their delicious Twitter account, which seems designed to wet the appetites of cinephiles across the world.
Last we heard of the project, Baz Luhrmann had bought the book rights. He was still deciding between three projects (“a historical epic, a major musical work, or a literary adaptation”) in June. Progress? Who knows. He’s stated he won’t start shooting his next film until 2011. The man likes to take his time, with only 4 movies in 20 years.

Troubled actress' family reportedly looking into taking over her affairs.

It looks like troubled actress Lindsay Lohan might be borrowing a page out of the Britney Spears playbook. Much like Spears, who emerged from a troubled period of erratic behavior, legal problems and forced hospitalization thanks to a strict conservatorship overseen by her father, Lohan's family is reportedly considering putting a similar program in place to help her get her stalled career, and life, back on track in light of her latest trip to rehab.
Spears began to emerge from a dangerous career spiral in early 2008 when her father was named conservator of her estate, giving him control over the management of her personal and financial affairs, as well as her health care. In Spears' case, that power extends to hiring security guards, removing people from his daughter's residence, approving or...

Despite online reports to the contrary, Taylor Swift is not set to replace Lindsay Lohan in the romantic comedy "One Night With You," the singer/actress' rep told MTV News.
Swift, who has appeared in movies like "Hannah Montana: The Movie," "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience" and "Valentine's Day," was rumored to take over the female lead in the flick about a starlet who joins a reality dating show in an attempt to save her career. But, as in most romantic comedies, things don't go as planned when instead she falls for a bartender who happens to hate all things Hollywood. A love/hate relationship ensues between the two.

Swift, who has appeared in movies like "Hannah Montana: The Movie," "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience" and "Valentine's Day," could take over the female lead in the flick about a starlet who joins a reality dating show in an attempt to save her career. But, as in most romantic comedies, things don't go as planned when instead she falls for a bartender who happens to hate all things Hollywood. A love/hate relationship ensues between the two.
"It appears the romantic comedy may finally be off the table for Lindsay Lohan. The producers had actually talked to Taylor Swift's agent a...

Lindsay Lohan arrives at court Friday
Photo: Robyn Beck/ Getty Images
Between the multiple jail and rehab stints, alcohol-monitoring devices and a dearth of high-profile onscreen roles, this year appears to have been especially trying for Lindsay Lohan.
On Friday, the actress was sent to jail for the second time in three months (she was released the same day) after she admitted to failing a court-ordered drug test. Lohan will reportedly don a Scram bracelet for the second time this year and is due to head back to court on October 22. Her legal drama has all but eclipsed her film career and many wonder if Lohan can still attract fans with her work as ably as she can hog headlines with her antics.

Actress leaves prison after posting $300,000 bail.

After spending less than a day in prison, Lindsay Lohan was released after posting $300,000 bail. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Whitmore told The Associated Press that the actress left jail around 11:40 p.m. Friday night.
Lohan was jailed Friday morning, a week after the actress admitted to failing a court-ordered drug test. Judge Elden Fox initially denied the troubled star bail and she was immediately taken into custody following her hearing. The move was reportedly designed to keep the actress in prison until her upcoming October 22 court date and reduce the chance of an early release due to overcrowding. However, Lohan's lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, later insisted her client was entitled to bail and a second judge, Patricia M. Schnegg, overturned Fox's ruling. Lohan is still...

Lindsay Lohan is expected to be a free woman once again after a second judge agreed with her lawyer that the actress is entitled to bail.
Since Lohan's jailing Friday (September 24), lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley was reportedly working to get her client the option of posting bail. The Los Angeles Times reports that on Friday afternoon, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Patricia M. Schnegg overturned Judge Elden Fox's order and granted the actress $300,000 bail. TMZ adds that Lohan will have to be outfitted with a Scram bracelet within 24 hours and avoid venues where alcohol is the "chief item of sale." Lohan sported a Scram bracelet this summer, which reportedly went off at a party, an incident that ultimately led to her July prison sentence.

Lindsay Lohan's return to jail on Friday (September 24) as a result of a probation violation has no doubt put another kink in the problem-plagued actress' attempts to revive a once-thriving career. Specifically, production on the Linda Lovelace biopic, "Inferno," which was set to begin filming in November, may be hampered by the ongoing legal troubles of its leading lady.
Still, "Inferno" director Matthew Wilder, who has been unyielding in his support for his star, said the show will go on — with Lohan.
"We love her. We want her to do well," Wilder wrote in a statement e-mailed to MTV News. "We will make the picture shortly."
Wilder added that the film will now shoot in Los Angeles instead of Louisiana,...

Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan was back in court in Los Angeles on Friday (September 24) to face the music after admitting last week to failing a recent drug test. The judge in the case was clearly not happy about this latest setback.
According to TMZ, Judge Elden Fox did not hear any testimony from Lohan's lawyers before denying the 24-year-old "Mean Girls" star bail and ordering her to immediately report to jail. Lohan was reportedly handcuffed in court before being taken into custody, meaning she could be behind bars until the next hearing in the case, scheduled for October 22.
Wearing black sunglasses, a long black blazer over a high-waisted white skirt and black top and shiny stacked heels, Lohan breezed past the assembled paparazzi around 8 a.

Lindsay Lohan seems to be having her share of trouble with the law lately, but there's one battle she has won. According to TMZ, the actress settled a $100 million lawsuit against E-Trade, which ran a Super Bowl TV spot that Lohan felt mocked her tabloid reputation.
Lohan's attorney Stephanie Ovadia revealed that the lawsuit had come to a close in a statement to TMZ: "The case between Lindsay and E-Trade has been settled ... there is no further comment."
While no other details regarding the settlement have been revealed, Team Lohan is reportedly pleased with the suit's outcome, even suggesting that the actress received an undisclosed amount of money from the suit. Dina Lohan shared her two cents on the lawsuit, telling TMZ, "The family is...

Lindsay Lohan might soon have more than the embarrassment of a positive drug test to contend with. After admitting Friday to failing a test, TMZ reported Monday (September 20) that Lohan's probation has been revoked and a bench warrant was issued for her arrest in the incident.
Lohan has been ordered to appear in court Friday morning, which means that, although the warrant was issued Monday, it will be held until she comes before Judge Elden Fox or executed should she fail to appear. The gossip outlet claimed that the revocation came after Fox read about Lohan failing a drug test — the site has claimed she actually failed two recent tests — on TMZ. According to the site, one test showed the presence of cocaine in Lohan's system and in another,...

But her admission to the positive test is 'very encouraging,' Robert J. Lindsey tells MTV News.

There may be some unfortunate consequences for Lindsay Lohan in light of her failed drug test, but even with a slip in her sobriety so soon after leaving rehab, the fact that the actress fessed up to her indiscretion is a positive sign, an addiction expert told MTV News.
"From what I've heard, the tone with which Lindsay talked about the fact that she tested positive was very encouraging," said Robert J. Lindsey, president and CEO of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency. "She really recognized that what this is is a relapse into active addiction, and she is very committed to making sure that she gets back on track."
Over the weekend, Lohan admitted to failing her recent drug test.
