With its breakneck pace, 90-second songs, and rants against animal testing, Gouge Away’s 2016 debut, Dies, placed the band’s sound squarely within the hardcore template. But the band’s range of influences runs deeper, a fact that’s evident even from their name, which was inspired by the Pixies song. Their third studio album, Deep Sage, finds Gouge Away evolving even further toward the ‘90s noise-rock sound they introduced on 2018’s Burnt Sugar.
Singer Christina Michelle shouted her way through Gouge Away’s early songs, but she shows a broader vocal range across Deep Sage’s 11 tracks. “Stuck in a Dream,” for one, pulses with fury as she repeats its minimal lyrics—“God, I just want to wake up/Up up up up up”—but her howls on this song and others are juxtaposed by passages of more melodic singing.

Roy Kent arrived at the exact right moment in Brett Goldstein’s life.
It’s already become a legendary bit of modern showbiz lore. The British actor, 41, was originally hired as a writer on Apple TV+’s breakout hit series Ted Lasso. After the writers room wrapped on the first season, however, Goldstein found himself struck by one of the characters — specifically, Roy Kent, the intimidating veteran forward of the show’s British premier league soccer team AFC Richmond. He felt such a kinship with this stoic tough guy, in fact,...

It’s Friday, and you know what that means, Disney lovers? Yes, Disney Plus has just added its weekly haul of new content. This time, there are 17 fresh titles going up on the site. These include a couple of major blockbusters, a batch of new TV episodes, a lot of National Geographic docu-series and a D+ original movie.
The latest original to land on the streaming service is Magic Camp, starring Adam DeVine as a down-on-his-luck magician who takes a job as a counsellor at a magic camp and finds that the misfit kids there help him rediscover his love of magic. The synopsis calls it “a heartwarming comedy about finding joy and confidence in self-acceptance,” and Jeffrey Tambor and Gillian Jacobs also feature.

Disney Plus subscribers may have just spent their weekend working their way through all the new content that arrived on the streaming service last Friday, so let’s look ahead to what’s headed to the site at the end of this week. It’s an even larger haul than the last one, comprising 18 movies and TV shows. There’s a little bit of everything coming this Friday, too, including a ton of National Geographic content, some new stuff for the children and a quartet of major movies – two previously released big hits and two Disney + Originals.
As part of the site’s Summer Movie Nights season, Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp lands on Friday. With the addition of this 2018 sequel starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly, that leaves just three McU films that are not on D+ – The Incredible Hulk and the two Spider-Man flicks.

In the new pandemic era of streaming entertainment, Disney+ has seemingly built up its own strategy. Every summer month has thus far been highlighted by one major movie and then complemented with the typical Disney content.
For August 2020, the big original movie of the hour is Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe. This will be the second Phineas and Ferb movie and the first to make its premiere via streaming. The film premieres on August 28 and finds the Phineas and Ferb gang back together again as they set out across the galaxy to rescue Candace.
Two other Disney+ originals of note this month are Howard (Aug. 7)and The One and Only Ivan (Aug. 14). Howard is a documentary about Howard Ashman, the unheralded lyricist behind Disney classics like Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. The One and Only Ivan is a film based on the book of the same...

Each year, IndieWire partners with MIT’s Open Documentary Lab to offer a deeper look at Sundance’s New Frontiers section. Here, Master’s Candidate Andrea S. Kim highlights Vr works that expertly blend story and technique to explore themes of embodiment.
Since its advent, Virtual Reality (Vr) has promised experiences that could detach its users from their present reality and immerse their bodies into an alternate one. While Vr creators and users seldom claim full dissociation at this stage in the technology, the imaginative space afforded by the suspension of disbelief make the medium ripe for creative inquiries into the very phenomenon that immersive technologies enable.
In fact, Vr is the prime storytelling medium for teasing out and exploring these ambiguities of interior subjectivity — how it relates to the body, and how we might consider life outside bodies of our own.

During the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, I took a trip to the moon. Spaced Out, a virtual reality experience from French digital artist Pierre “Pyaré” Friquet, is one of the most transporting, immersive things I’ve ever tried. Donning a bathing suit, a floatation device, and an underwater Vr headset equipped with a snorkel, I floated on […]

The Sundance Institute revealed the last batch of programming for the 2020 Sundance Film Festival — minus a few last-minute additions to its feature lineup, still to come — by announcing its New Frontier section, which this time around include not only augmented and virtual reality, but also SMS-based text messaging, biotech and artificial intelligence.
Like the innovative work it encompasses, Sundance’s New Frontier program has been evolving in recent years, as the festival aims to bring greater attention to the fields of Vr, artificial intelligence, and outside-the-box new media. During the 11-day event — which takes place from Jan. 23 through Feb. 2, 2020 in Park City, Utah — this work will have a dedicated home at two venues, the New Frontier at The Ray and New Frontier Central.
Some of the more unconventional pieces include “Anti-Gone” (pictured above), an installation that imagines the world post-climate change; “Spaced Out” from French artist Pierre Friquet a.k.
