- In a small village in Darjeeling, Sahuji (Utpal Dutt) the merchant has woven a web of corruption in every layers of the social fabric. He supplies materials of inferior quality to the tea garden, and then bribes the accountants to pass his bills. When one of the managers of the tea estate, called "Boro Babu", (Abhi Bhattacharya), stands up against this corruption (By refusing to pay the bills from the tea garden till the quality issues are addressed), Sahuji pays the workers to go on a strike against this Boro Babu. And he is also involved in rampant smuggling of goods & gold across the border, and everyone from the local jeweler to the local police inspector are part of his intricate web.
While the father has created a position of influence by spreading corruption, his son Kaaliram (Amjad Khan) has ushered in a reign of terror. He goes to local bars, drinks, and doesn't pay. Anyone standing in his way gets beaten up mercilessly, either by him or his thugs. After getting sufficiently intoxicated, he then indulges in carnal desire by forcefully taking away any of the unmarried village girls for a night of merriment. If the poor girl's parents try to fight back, their house is set on fire. village belle Phulwa (Prema Narayan) stands up to Kaali's atrocities. Desperate villagers make a plea to the owner of the tea garden, who calls (presumably) the higher ups in police force and they promise to send someone.
Next day, while crossing a bridge, Kaaliram and his thugs meet a mysterious stranger on a mule, whose face is completely covered in a Sombrero-type hat popular in that region. The stranger, named Abhijeet (Amitabh Bachchan), doesn't seem to be aware of Kaali's reputation and has no hesitation in fighting back strongly. Kaali vows to take revenge, but on a number of subsequent encounters (Kaali was beating up an old man when he demanded compensation after Kaali drove his jeep into his entire clay pot collection (Kaali was distracted flirting with Phulwa). Abhijeet beats up Kaali badly) (Abhijeet poses as a cross border smuggler and sells gold biscuits to Sahuji for half price.. but later Sahu realizes that only 2 biscuits were of gold, the rest were of brass) , including a drum-playing competition (On Durga Pooja, Phulwa is looking for a drummer to start the dance performance.. Abhijeet wants to help her out and picks the drum.. But Kaali gets jealous and challenges Abhijeet to a duel. Kaali loses when his drum goes bust), Kaali comes up second every time. However, the ever so loyal police inspector (Asit Sen), always comes to his rescue and prevents him from being sent to jail. However, Kaali's frustration grows.
In the meanwhile, Abhijeet meets and falls in love with Rajni (Raakhee), the blind daughter of the Boro Babu (She was about to fall off a cliff at the tea garden when Abhijeet intervenes and saves her life). Rajni also reciprocates his feelings. Kaali goes to Boro Babu's house to bribe him (rs 2000 and a foreign sari for Rajni) to get him to clear a rs 17000 bill.. but Boro Babu throws Kaali out. This is when Sahu and Kaali bribe the workers of the tea estate to go on strike against Boro Babu. Abhijeet intervenes and exposes the strikers as bribed by Kaali and beats them back to work. Leader of the striking workers was Lotan, father of Phulwa. Kaali wants his money back, but Lotan already drank it all in alcohol. Kaali sets Lotan's house on fire and threatens to abduct Phulwa, if his money is not paid.
That rainy night, Kaali is on the run from the police and Abhijeet. He attempts to molest Rajni (who is alone at her house as Boro Babu is at the workers colony trying to get the fire under control), but Abhijeet comes to her rescue. When the police inspector again attempts to drag his feet, Abhijeet erupts in anger, shows his identity as a very high level police officer, throws Kaali into jail, and suspends the police officer. Kaali is sentenced to jail for 5 yrs.
Abhijeet marries Rajni (Boro Babu wanted to leave town since he could stand the accusations of sexual assault against his daughter. Again, Abhijeet comes to the rescue and proposes to Rajni) and they settle down in a quaint little village named Sonarpur, awaiting the birth of their first child. Meanwhile, Kaali gets out of jail and finds the whereabouts of Abhijeet and Rajni. Kaali finds that nobody in the town respects him anymore and is not afraid to stand up to him. Kaali believes this is all Abhijeet's doing and wants revenge. Kalli finds the location of the couple, when Abhijeet apprehends one of Sahu's trucks near the border, which was holding goods for smuggling.. He sends Abhijeet away from home by making a fake call for help, and then, enters Abhijeet's home and attacks Rajni, killing the unborn child.
A clue found outside the house ties Kaali with the incident (Abhijeet finds Kaali's gold medallion, which was recently gifted to him by Sahuji.. Abhijeet checks with the town jeweler and ascertains that the medallion belongs to Kaali ), and Abhijeet goes to confronts him. Sahuji gets notice of Abhijeet coming and alerts Kaali who runs away. Kaali instead gets in a truck and tracks Abhijeet and rams into him, sending him down the mountainside. Kaali thinks he has killed Abhijeet, but Puhlwa rescues him. Kaali organizes a huge party in celebration and invites Phulwa to dance there. Abhijeet hears this and enters the party in disguise.
However, as he is about to drag the handcuffed Kaali (after a prolonged chase starting from his lair, to the rope-way, to the mountain slopes, then across the river and finally on the mountain roads) to the police station, Sahuji, in an attempt to shoot Abhijeet, ends up killing his son. Sahuji is arrested.
