Impressive porn soap opera with flaws

Warning: Spoilers
Very typical of the style and content of the couples/Porno Chic XXX era, BLUE ECSTASY is one of Kemal Horulu's better movies. Boasting a top NYC cast it is engrossing adult entertainment.

Leslie Bovee does fine in a tricky dual role: film unfolds in flashback as she's sitting in a park writing a reminiscence, about her failed romance with Eric Edwards. Her name is Veronica, but she has an alter ego named Ronnie who appears on screen with her and talks with her. It's not quite 3 FACES OF EVE time, but rather a case of Veronica being an inhibited prude while Ronnie is the free-wheeling (sexually) aspect of her personality and in some ways a bad influence.

Many interesting characters are presented (at times the uncredited script seems to be headed for the complexity of TV's "General Hospital"), among them Edwards as her sympathetic but fed-up boy friend (she refuses to have sex, for no particular reason), best buddy Samantha Fox (scene stealer as usual), friendly neighborhood drug dealer Jamie Gillis (his subplot is the movie's most ambiguous), sexy sister Candida Royalle, Fox's main man Bobby Astyr, etc.

Story takes many twists and turns, the most notable being a seemingly unrelated detour into BDSM when Veronica fantasizes an impressive set-piece of Jamie and George Payne in fetish gear abusing blonde slave Chtistine De Shaffer as well as torturing a girl on a rack, hanging a guy in bondage from the ceiling and sexually satisfying Ronnie.

There are several glaring continuity errors in the later reels, notably a lengthy sequence where Veronica is rushing in the streets while we watch Gillis humping her sister Royalle, but when she finally arrives, confusing dialog on the order of "you were here earlier?" tries to cover the wrong editing.

With excellent acting and numerous hot sex scenes the film is quite entertaining but has a truly head-scratching ending. Basically Kemal posits as a happy ending that Veronica is finally free (of hangups) but her future running away to Colombia with sleazy drug dealer Gillis is not what I would consider "happy" or a solution to her problems. Similarly, the final image of Ronnie talking directly to the viewer, in a sort of "my work here (with Veronica) is done, and now I can help all of you with your hangups" vein is both corny and silly.

I guess those faults are merely evidence that even on a good day, and BLUE ECSTASY is certainly a worthwhile XXX movie, Horulu was not up there with the greats and near-greats.
