New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features one random pick as well as four selections reflecting the month of May 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include a self-loathing serial killer, a violinist’s murderous ghost, and a postmodern vamp flick.
Scream, Pretty Peggy (1973)
Pictured: Ted Bessell and Sian Barbara Allen in Scream, Pretty Peggy.
Directed by Gordon Hessler.
The TV-movie Scream, Pretty Peggy first aired as part of ABC Movie of the Week. Bette Davis plays the mother of a reclusive sculptor (Ted Bessell), and after the previous housekeeper goes missing, a local college student (Sian Barbara Allen) fills the position. Little does she know, though, the young employee’s predecessor was murdered — and the killer is still on the loose.

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
A bizarre recurring issue with the Amityville “franchise” is that the films tend to be needlessly complicated. Back in the day, the first sequels moved away from the original film’s religious-themed haunted house storyline in favor of streamlined, easily digestible concepts such as “haunted lamp” or “haunted mirror.”
As the budgets plummeted and indie filmmakers capitalized on the brand’s notoriety, it seems the wrong lessons were learned. Runtimes have ballooned past the 90-minute mark and the narratives are often saggy and unfocused.
Both issues are clearly on display in Amityville Karen (2022), a film that starts off rough, but promising, and ends with a confused whimper.
The promise is embodied by the tinge of self-awareness in Julie Anne Prescott (The Amityville Harvest)’s screenplay,...

The legendary “Pulp of Trash,” John Waters hasn’t directed a feature film since A Dirty Shame back in 2004, but The Guardian reports this week that the Pink Flamingos, Hairspray, and Serial Mom director will soon be making a long-awaited return with a brand new movie!
The Guardian reports this morning, “Hairspray director John Waters is about to start production on his first feature film for 20 years, with Aubrey Plaza as the lead.”
The film is titled Liarmouth, an adaptation of Waters’ same titled novel from 2022.
Liarmouth is “a feel-bad romance,” with the novel billing it as “a hilariously filthy tale of sex, crime, and family dysfunction from the brilliantly twisted mind of John Waters.”
“Liarmouth centers on a scammer and compulsive liar called Marsha Sprinkle who splits from her partner Daryl and steals from both her daughter and her mother.”

A giant in the world of podcasting needs a “sonic signature.”
So when the prolific publisher Wondery decided it was time to brand its product by establishing an unforgettable signature, its leaders hired the creative-design firm, Made Music, behind the iconic static-screen clip that opens every HBO show. Wondery CEO Jen Sargent recalls that the branding exercise in 2018 helped the company fine-tune its vision of what Wondery podcasts should deliver to listeners.
“Imagine six or seven of us sitting in a room and asking ourselves, ‘Does this sound like wonder to you? Does this sound like wondering?’” recalls Sargent.
The efforts proved to be time well spent. Since Wondery’s launch in early 2016, podcasting as a medium has seen its listener base skyrocket. Wondery has blossomed into one of the largest producers of popular, recurring podcast series including “SmartLess,” a freewheeling conversation hosted by actors Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett.

Banijay Rights has closed a major sale on its French drama series “Serial Lover” to Spanish broadcaster Atresmedia.
“Serial Lover” marks the debut series for Banijay France’s label Shine Fiction, which is co-producing with Amaury Fournial from Sibaro Films.
Written by Alice Den Broek and directed by Fred Berthe, “Serial Lover”‘s synopsis bills the show as “the story of a shrewd man who lives many different lives – a pilot, a surgeon, a broker, a journalist; developing a new personality for every identity and deceiving experts in each field. Handsome, charming, and attentive, exhilarated by his power, the deception becomes an art form as he manipulates all those around him, especially women who he targets and steals from. How many women have fallen in this trap?”
The series has been ordered by M6 in France. The deal with Atresmedia was negotiated by Marion Vergnaud, SVP Italy, Iberia & Malta, Banijay Rights.

After being behind bars for 20 years, to being free for almost a year, Adnan Syed faces the possibility of going back behind bars for the murder of his high school girlfriend, Hae Min Lee.
In 1999, Lee was found partially buried in Leakin Park in Maryland after being strangled to death. After questionable testimonies, Syed was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

Adnan Syed’s murder conviction — which gained worldwide attention from the hit podcast “Serial” in 2014 — has taken another turn. A Maryland court has reinstated Syed’s conviction after it was previously overturned in September 2022 and Syed was released from prison.
The Appellate Court of Maryland ruled on Tuesday that a lower court had violated the right of Young Lee, the brother of the late Hae Min Lee — whom Syed was found guilty of murdering in 2000 — to have been notified of and attend a hearing on the state’s motion to vacate Syed’s conviction. The Maryland court ordered a new hearing on the motion to vacate Syed’s murder conviction in a 2-1 decision.
“[The court] has the power and obligation to remedy those violations, as long we can do so without violating Mr. Syed’s right to be free from double jeopardy,” the decision read, according to the New York Times.

In the nine years since Serial, the “true crime podcaster” has become, variously, a career goal, sociological type and, in TV shows like Only Murders in the Building, object of satire. The New York Times acquired Serial Productions, the company behind the eponymous breakout true-crime podcast, in July 2020.
It now has its first Serial Productions podcast hosted by one of its own reporters.
The Coldest Case In Laramie, hosted by Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Kim Barker, explores the story of an unsolved homicide that took place while she was in high school in Laramie, Wyoming, nearly 40 years ago.
The limited series, featuring eight episodes, will see Barker confront the conflicting stories people have told themselves about the crime because of an unexpected development: the arrest of a former Laramie police officer accused in the murder.
The Coldest Case In Laramie launches on February 23.
In 1985, when Barker was a sophomore in high school, a 22 year-old college student named Shelli Wiley was murdered in Laramie. The killing was particularly horrific — Wiley was stabbed repeatedly before being dragged into her apartment, which was then set on fire.
It now has its first Serial Productions podcast hosted by one of its own reporters.

In 1985, when Barker was a sophomore in high school, a 22 year-old college student named Shelli Wiley was murdered in Laramie. The killing was particularly horrific — Wiley was stabbed repeatedly before being dragged into her apartment, which was then set on fire.

"It's gratifying to see many of the questions and issues probed in the original episodes come to bear on the events of this week."

Eight years after Serial made Adnan Syed a household name, the justice system has validated the heartbreaking truth the podcast’s reporting revealed to the public back in 2014: Syed’s trial was deeply flawed, and he was wrongfully convicted of the murder of Hae Min Lee. That means the justice system potentially imprisoned the wrong man for the last 23 years. On Monday, Adnan Syed walked out of prison for the first time since he was a teenager.

In a new 17-minute episode of Serial updating the latest developments in the murder case that rocketed the podcast to international success, host and exec producer Sarah Koenig says she believes “the chances of the state ever trying to prosecutor Adnan [Syed] again are remote at best.”
“Adnan’s case was a mess,” Koenig says after summarizing the reasons why a Maryland judge vacated Syed’s conviction in the 1999 murder of 18-year-old Hae Min Lee. “Is a mess. That’s pretty much where we were when we stopped reporting in 2014.”
Listen to the new Serial episode below.
In the new episode Koenig describes the atmosphere in the courtroom yesterday as Baltimore Circuit Judge Melissa Phinn vacated the first-degree murder conviction and ordered Syed’s release from prison after 23 years behind bars. “Shockingly quiet,” is how Koenig describes it.

Adnan Syed, one of the key subjects of the first season of smash hit true crime podcast Serial, is being released from prison.
After spending over 22 years in prison, lawyers found information “concerning the possible involvement of two alternative suspects” other than Adnan Syed and that legal teams “have identified significant reliability issues regarding the most critical pieces of evidence at trial.” However, it is not outright being stated that Adnan Syed is not guilty.
According to the Baltimore City State’s Attorney, “We’re not yet declaring Adnan Syed is innocent…But we are declaring that in the interest of fairness and justice he is entitled to a new trial.”
Further, according to a public defender: “Given the stunning lack of reliable evidence implicating Mr. Syed, coupled with increasing evidence pointing to other suspects, this unjust conviction cannot stand.”
It has not yet been decided if prosecutors will go forward with a new trial.

Adnan Syed, who became the subject of the hit 2014 podcast “Serial,” was freed by a Baltimore court after a judge vacated his murder conviction Monday.
Syed was convicted for the 1999 murder of ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, but a new investigation found that police withheld information, including the existence of two additional suspects, from Syed’s lawyers.
As prosecutors requested last week, Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn ordered that Syed’s conviction be vacated. She approved his release: The now 41-year-old had been in prison more more than 20 years.

Adnan Syed will be released from prison. On Monday, a Baltimore judge ordered the release of Syed — whose murder conviction was captured on the podcast Serial in 2014 — after prosecutors filed a motion to vacate his murder conviction earlier this year.
The judge in the case, Baltimore Circuit Judge Melissa Phinn, overturned the first-degree murder conviction and asked that he remain on Gps monitoring until a new trial date is set, according to the Baltimore Sun. Now, prosecutors have 30 days to decide whether to fully drop the charges against Syed or try him again.

Update, with video Adnan Syed, whose prosecution in the 1999 killing of his high school girlfriend Hae Min Lee was examined in minute detail in the massively popular 2014 season of the hit podcast Serial, will be released from prison after 23 years, with a Maryland judge today overturning his murder conviction.
The ruling came after a hearing today before Baltimore Circuit Judge Melissa Phinn. Fifty years from now when we look back to explore what sort of entertainment defined the 2010s into the 2020s, true crime and serial killer stories will absolutely be at the top of the list. Birthed out of the true-crime podcast boom of the 2010s which led to the true crime docuseries/adaptation explosion we're currently living through, filmmakers and screenwriters have been forced to get a lot more resourceful with their crime stories, considering the truth is often stranger than fiction.
One of the newest examples of this is "The Patient," the psychological thriller limited series starring Domhnall Gleeson as a serial killer who kidnaps his therapist (Steve Carell) not to make him yet another victim, but in the hopes that he'll be able to cure him of his homicidal urges. “Dexter” and “The Blacklist” producer Daniel Cerone has boarded the U.K. adaptation of Japanese crime drama format “Connected,” Variety can reveal.
Cerone has joined as executive producer and is overseeing the U.K. writers’ room for the show, which is the first project to emerge from a co-production deal between U.K. production company Envision Entertainment and Japanese broadcaster Nippon TV.
Presented to potential partners for the first time on Tuesday at French drama festival Series Mania, “Connected” is currently looking for international partners, such as distributors, streamers or broadcasters. The first iteration of the format is set to air on Nippon TV in April.
Inspired by the likes of investigative podcast series “Serial,” the format is centered on a brand of sleuth known as a “homebound detective” (think investigative journalism group Bellingcat). Scouring the Internet for clues, the group gets to the bottom of crimes using advanced research skills.

“Limetown” is about as meta on the persistent true crime phenomenon as it gets. Its credits include the Clint Eastwood hit “The Mule,” the Palme d’Or winner “The Square,” and Martin Scorsese’s upcoming adaptation of the best-seller “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Earlier this year, Imperative tapped Jason Hoch as the president of its nascent podcast division. Hoch is the creator and executive producer of “Gangster House.”
From “Serial” to “Crime Junkie,” true crime stories have been podcasting smashes. In Thevis, Imperative has hit on an incredible story of a man who lived a duel life in 1970s Atlanta. A family man and successful businessman on the surface, Thevis also had a darker having made a fortune in peep show machines.

In 2014, the high-concept French comedy Serial (Bad) Weddings became a surprise box office sensation, grossing close to $175 million worldwide (most of it domestically) and turning into one of the most successful Gallic films of all time.
Its premise was, well, a bit ridiculous: a bigoted father’s three daughters marry an Arab, a Jew, and an Asian, respectively, leaving his fourth daughter the last hope of maintaining pureblooded French genes in the family. But when she decides to get hitched with an African, daddy nearly has a stroke. That is, until he learns, after many comic asides, to stop ...

Rolling off the success of “Serial (Bad) Weddings 2,” Romain Rojtman is reteaming with Ugc and Orange Studio on the the third opus of France’s comedy B.O. hit franchise.
“Serial (Bad) Weddings 2” was released on Jan. 30 and grossed over 45 million euros from 7 million admissions in France, breaking a four-year record for a local language film. The movie is currently having a theatrical roll-out in several countries, including Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and Canada.
The franchise centers on the Verneuil family, an upper-class Catholic couple (Christian Clavier and Chantal Lauby) from a French province and their three daughters who have married men of different faiths. Rojtman, who is producing “Serial (Bad) Weddings” for Les Films du 24 and Ugc Images, said the project’s plot will have a greater international appeal than the second opus, notably through the characters of the in-laws.

Matricide and Munchausen syndrome by proxy may not sound like natural Emmy bait, but in 2019 anything is possible.
That seems to be the takeaway as not one but three projects – Hulu’s limited series “The Act,” Lifetime’s movie “Love You to Death,” and Investigation Discovery’s documentary “Gypsy’s Revenge” – are eligible for the upcoming Emmy season, and all three were inspired by the true-crime tragedy of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her mother, Dee Dee.
The Blanchards’ story has been, by turns, horrifying and fascinating people since the supposedly gravely-ill Gypsy Rose was discovered missing and Dee Dee was found murdered in her Missouri home in 2015. In the weeks and months after, it was revealed that Dee Dee had suffered from Munchausen by proxy, keeping Gypsy Rose highly – unnecessarily – medicated, until the young woman had her mother murdered by her Internet boyfriend. Suffice it to say, that’s the...

In 2016, the first season of Ryan Murphy’s “American Crime Story,” about the arrest and trial of O.J. Simpson, swept the Emmys’ limited-series categories, sparking a revival in mainstream interest in both the Simpson case and the true-crime genre. Ever since then, crime stories — American and otherwise — have been multiplying. It’s a boom that’s turning this year’s Emmy race into a digest of recent history.
Connie Britton was a Golden Globe nominee for Bravo’s “Dirty John,” adapted from a Los Angeles Times story and podcast about one woman’s encounter with a devious criminal. Patricia Arquette earned Globe and SAG honors for her role as a real-life prison employee who assisted in a breakout in Showtime’s “Escape at Dannemora.” Making her a possible double Emmy nominee for roles taken luridly from life, Arquette currently plays a mother eventually killed by the daughter she torments in Hulu’s “The Act.

What's good?
The existence of Serial Mom 25 years ago establishes that America’s current obsession with true crime stories – with the likes of Serial and American Crime Story and the never-ending avalanche of Netflix documentaries – is not something remotely new to our day and age. Hell, it wasn’t even new to 1994; many of the social observations Serial Mom makes arguably were already well before up to the previous year’s The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom. There is little prophetic in the satire but there is A Lot of scary forecasting regarding the Oj Simpson murder case that was just around the corner at the time of its release...
