Sex & Nudity

Violence & Gore

  • Gargamel is rather abusive to Azrael and later to Scruple, kicking them, stepping on them and throwing pots and pans at them.
  • Clockwork Smurf and Clockwork Smurfette are seen multiple times getting struck by lightning, seemingly dying and being tossed around and broken, but Handy Smurf always revives them both.
  • As a running gag, Brainy Smurf is often thrown backwards on his head a great distance after making a condescending statement, however the character is uninjured by this and only appears mildly annoyed.
  • Characters are shown getting mildly injured for comedic purposes (falling off of hills, struck by lightning, stung by bees, getting pricked with thorns).
  • Jokey Smurf as a running gag has surprise gift boxes which explode in the face of anybody who tries to open them. The boxes never seriously hurt anybody.
  • Gargamel is often shown throwing the Smurfs into cookware and threatening to kill them, eat them or turn them into gold. He sings about his attempts and makes disturbing statements about how he wants to eat "deep fried Smurfs" and other made-up Smurf foods (this is even enough to repulse Azrael and Scruple at times; at one point Scruple leaves Gargamel's house in horror, telling Gargamel, "I don't want to hear the screaming" as Gargamel is preparing to eat the Smurfs).
  • Lord Balthazar's "moat monster" has its neck tied up in a knot by Denisa (intended to be comedic).
  • Gargamel and Scruple fall down a hill twice, and in one instance, Azrael is with them. The Smurfs laugh and take pictures of the incident.
  • Gargamel needs to put a potion directly into a volcano where there is molten-hot tar at the bottom. He ties Scruple to a rope and uses a machine to drop him down in (he nearly falls into the tar), and Gargamel later abandons him when the volcano begins to erupt (Scruple is not injured or killed; he manages to climb up the rope and escape on his own).
  • Characters get slapped in some episodes.
  • Characters are frozen in large blocks of ice but are later un-thawed.
  • Gargamel is seen heavily bandaged with a black eye in one scene after being beaten up.
  • Azrael often chases and corners Smurfs, attempting to eat them and sometimes catching them in his claws (it's worth noting that no Smurfs are ever actually killed or eaten on the series).
  • Scruple is seen with a bandage wrapped around his head and Azrael is seen covered in various bandages after they hit a tree branch and get knocked unconscious.
  • Papa Smurf is seen with a crutch after breaking his leg.
  • An antagonistic character is buried in a cave full of rocks and presumably trapped or crushed to death.
  • Gargamel says "I wish I was dead" in one scene (meant to be comedic).
  • Numerous characters being beaten, battled, etc.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Some episodes, scenes and characters (like monsters) may be too intense/frightening for young children. In many episodes positive characters encounter life-threatening situations but it's always depicted in a stylized and light-hearted way.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • The character Puppy is poisoned and nearly dies (he is seen lying on the ground and moaning) but he is revived by the Smurfs.
  • A character called Ducky (a large duck) is shot by Lord Balthazar with some sort of a gun-like weapon. This kills the character, who is seen lying on the ground deceased, but the character is later brought back to life by Mother Nature's personification.
  • Azrael and a wild lynx he has fallen in love with are nearly shot to death by Bathazar, but Gargamel defends the two characters.
  • Scruple is shown getting bullied by his ex-classmates from wizard school on multiple occasions. At one point they lift him into the air and drop him from a great height while he is carrying firewood for Gargamel, and at another point they laugh at him and call him names after he falls into a swamp.
  • Gargamel and Azrael are turned to stone at one point and the Smurfs find this amusing; they are seen dancing and climbing on the characters.
  • Hefty Smurf declares that he would love to beat up Smurfette after finding out about her being an imposter. He also frequently makes the same statement about Gargamel and Azrael.
