Released theatrically November 22, 2023, director Ridley Scott's "Napoleon" feature, starring Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”) and Vanessa Kirby (“The Fantastic Four”) earned Oscar nominations for ‘Best Costume Design’, ‘Best Production Design’ and ‘Best Visual Effects’, with Scott now readying his director’s cut, with a streaming runtime of more than four hours:
"...the film is a personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor viewed through the prism of the addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, 'Josephine'.
"The film also captures Napoleon’s famous battles, his relentless ambition, and astounding strategic mind as a military leader, war visionary and war criminal.”

1972's "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" is a movie I'm betting many of you haven't seen. I'd like to make the case that you should amend that. How, dear reader, is it that this is relevant right now in 2024? With the release of "Dune: Part Two" upon us, there has been much discussion recently about great sci-fi sequels. Many of the early reactions to Denis Villeneuve's film have effusively praised "Dune: Part Two" as one of the greatest sequels in the genre of all time, right up there with "The Empire Strikes Back." While I have yet to see Mr. Villeneuve's film (as of this writing), it got me thinking about the genre that I love so much and the sequels I think hit it out of the park. That brings us to the movie at hand.

The Challenge: Battle For a New Champion final officially got underway in Episode 18, as seven finalists began competing for the right to call themselves a champion.
Qualifying competitors included fan-favorite Nurys Mateo, Jay Starrett, Colleen Schneider, Corey Lay, Emanuel Neagu, Moriah Jadea, and Berna Canbeldek.
Host Tj Lavin revealed there would be monetary prizes for first, second, and third place, along with three phases of the final, similar to the season’s Control, Chaos, and Conquest phases.
An early elimination reduced the finalists by one after Corey eliminated Jay following the Control phase, which left four women and two men.
In the Chaos phase, competitors were paired up randomly for each checkpoint, but at least one competitor claimed a disadvantage due to an injury.
However, former show winner Zach Nichols said he didn’t believe it was a real injury based on what was presented during the season.

As The Challenge: Battle For a New Champion moved closer to the final, another purge and elimination were needed to reduce the number of competitors.
In Episode 17, Nurys Mateo returned to the house, indicating she trusted no one after she’d just been sent into elimination against her showmance Horacio Gutierrez and her friend Kyland Young.
Nurys eliminated the two guys many felt were the biggest threats to the men’s side of the field, making Jay Starrett, Michele Fitzgerald, and others happy.
However, Nurys told her castmates, “F*** y’all,” and that she wouldn’t share any details about what the Conquest elimination event included.
Karma became a prominent theme with Nurys’ return as she and Olivia Kaiser talked, as well as Jay and Nurys, following what happened.

The Challenge: Battle For a New Champion entered its final phase as Chaos ended, and Conquest began eliminating more competitors before the final.
The Chaos phase featured the arrival of the ten former Challenge champions to The Arena, including Cara Maria Sorbello, Laurel Stucky, Jordan Wiseley, and Chris “Ct” Tamburello.
Several champs ousted Season 39 cast members from the game, while others were defeated.
When host Tj Lavin revealed Conquest, he indicated it would be an individual game now and that whoever came in last place in the daily challenge would be sent home via a purge.
The winner also received safety from elimination, starting a chain reaction of votes that ultimately determined who would fight to stay in the game.
When all was said and done, two competitors got sent home from Season 39 with no more chance at winning that hefty grand prize.

After the newest "Planet of the Apes" trilogy wrapped up in 2017 with director Matt Reeves' stunning, Biblical epic "War for the Planet of the Apes," fans were left with two pressing questions. One, why the heck wasn't Andy Serkis ever recognized by the Oscars for his genuinely award-worthy performance as Caesar? Secondly, would the actor ever return for future movies down the line, despite the fact that Caesar meets a heartbreaking but poignant end by the conclusion of the film? There's precedent within this franchise for actors once again taking the lead role in subsequent sequels as a different character, of course -- look no further than Roddy McDowall starring in the original "Planet of the Apes" and "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" as the chimpanzee Cornelius before coming back in "Conquest" and eventually "Battle" to play the role of Cornelius' son and Caesar.
So why not keep the tradition going,...

Even for Netflix, $55 million is a huge chunk of cash to drop on a series…especially if they don’t receive a single completed episode. But that’s just what happened when Netflix put 47 Ronin director Carl Rinsch in charge of a sci-fi saga, which has its own backstory involving Covid conspiracies, cryptocurrency and pandemic-era paranoia. Now this is worth a 10-part doc!
In a new feature by The New York Times chronicling Carl Rinsch and his quasi-attempts to make Conquest at Netflix, it’s claimed that the director “discovered Covid-19’s secret transmission mechanism and to be able to predict lightning strikes” as well as put a fifth of the budget into cryptocurrency and blew it on lavish items like several Rolls-Royces and designer clothes. Rinsch, for his part, is now suing Netflix for breach of contract, claiming they owe him $14 million. Yeah, good luck getting that check, Carl…...

In 2018, Carl Erik Rinsch, known for directing “47 Ronin,” pitched a sci-fi series about artificial humans, drawing interest from various studios amid a content-hungry era. Netflix, seeking a potential hit like “Stranger Things,” outbid competitors like Amazon with over $55 million and unprecedented creative freedom for Rinsch. This decision, as detailed by The New York Times, would soon become a regrettable venture for the streaming giant.
The project, “Conquest,” became a financial sinkhole, costing Netflix millions without yielding a single episode. Rinsch’s behavior reportedly grew erratic, involving claims of discovering Covid-19 secrets and predicting natural phenomena. His personal life also spiraled, as evidenced by his lavish spending on Rolls-Royces and luxury items, along with his intense stock market and cryptocurrency gambles.
Rinsch’s background in filmmaking was promising. Having worked under Ridley Scott and achieved success with a Philips short film, his talent wasn’t in question. However, his direction...

Around five years ago, Netflix spent a reported $55m on Conquest, a sci-fi TV series that was never finished – and may never be released at all…
After years of huge expenditure, and deals with some of the world’s best-known actors and filmmakers, streaming giants like Netflix and Disney+ have reversed course and started to reduce costs. And as subscription prices are jacked up, shows are cancelled or quietly removed from platforms, few stories sum up the late 2010s era of peak streaming than the one just broken by The New York Times.
It reports that, in 2018, Netflix signed a deal with filmmaker Carl Erik Rinsch to make an ambitious-sounding sci-fi series, initially called White Horse and later retitled Conquest. Set in a near future in which humans war with artificial beings called the Organic Intelligent, the series was snapped up by the streaming giant in a deal worth millions.

Brazil’s economic powerhouse, São Paulo is emerging as a key film-tv player in Brazil’s post-pandemic mix.
In one move, São Paulo State and City authorities are teaming to power up a new cash rebate for shoots, international and national, to more than four times the endowment of its first edition in 2021.
Launched last July by Spcine, the city’s go-ahead film commission, the first shoot spend rebate in Brazil had a total annual budget of 1.6 million. This time round, now also backed by São Paulo State, 2022’s endowment will come in at R40 million, 8 million at current exchange rates.
Given a return of 20-30 of expenditure that will make 36 million of various titles’ shoot spend in São Paulo eligible for the rebate program.
In a second initiative, São Paulo State Secretary of Culture Sergio Sá Leitão has launched a São Paulo Creative Economy Internationalization Program, part of the State’s Creative Sp initiative.

This article contains Peacemaker spoilers.
One of the strengths of James Gunn’s delightful HBO Max series Peacemaker has been its cast, and one of the breakout actors on the show has been Chukwudi Iwuji, who’s portrayed the original character Clemson Murn, leader of the black ops Project Butterfly team and, as it turns out, an alien butterfly himself. Iwuji is a veteran actor who has worked primarily on the British stage, with a number of forays into TV and film, but Peacemaker is perhaps his most high-profile mainstream project to date.
Until his next one, that is. Coming off his work on Peacemaker (which came to an end in Episode 7 with Murn’s death at the hands of his fellow butterflies), Iwuji was cast by Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is currently filming. In typical Marvel Studios fashion, however, the name of Iwuji’s character has not been revealed.

Half a dozen reasons to shoot in São Paulo.
1. Diversity
One of São Paolo’s biggest attractions “is our diversity,” says SPcine president Viviane Ferreira. “By diversity, I mean the variety of locations — urbanistic and architectonic — but also the diversity of cultures, of histories that cross our city every day,” she adds. The city’s rich ethnic diversity includes an astonishing mix of Lebanese, Japanese, Italian and African people. São Paulo is considered the next largest Lebanese and Japanese city out of their respective countries. A heady variety in architectural styles, world-class cuisine, music and art allows it stand in for almost any big city in the world. The state of São Paolo also offers a wealth of green spaces and forests, a stunning array of landscapes and the world’s largest street Carnaval and LGBT Pride parade, both of which have appeared in films and series.

Game on. In a bold move to reenergize São Paulo’s production scene, city authorities are bowing Brazil’s inaugural rebate scheme for international and local shoots, launching a call for applications on July 6, the first day of this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Since the turn of the century São Paulo consolidated its place as Brazil’s foremost film-tv hub and the biggest, with Mexico City, in Latin America. And now shoots have returned.
Pre-pandemic, Brazil’s financial capital served as one of the backdrops to the Keanu Reeves-produced dystopian sci-fi series “Conquest” as well as “Black Mirror” episode “Striking Vipers,” Amazon Prime’s “September Mornings,” the Wachowskis’ “Sense8,” and multiple other shows from Netflix, as well as Amazon Prime, Disney and Fox.
Among projects filming in the city now are Netflix’s “De volta aos 15” and Fox’s “Silvio Santos.”

Before last Wednesday’s Golden Globe nominations, “Hillbilly Elegy’s” Glenn Close was in sixth place in Gold Derby’s Best Supporting Actress Oscar odds, but after she accrued a bid there and at the Screen Actors Guild Awards the next day, she has rocketed to fourth place. Another post-Globe and -SAG change is Olivia Colman (“The Father”) usurping the SAG-snubbed Amanda Seyfried (“Mank”) for the top spot. You know what that means: if both Close and Colman make the final five, Colman could beat Close again, which would make her the the fifth performer to defeat the same person twice.
The first four were:
1. Luise Rainer won Best Actress for “The Great Ziegfeld” (1936) and “The Good Earth” (1937) over Irene Dunne for “Theodora Goes Wild” (1936) and “The Awful Truth” (1937)
2. Spencer Tracy won Best Actor for “Captains Courageous” (1937) and “Boys Town” (1938) over Charles Boyer...

Uruguay’s government has announced new and ambitious film-tv legislation aimed at converting the small Latin American nation into a far larger film-tv hub via a new series of cash rebates for international shoots and co-productions with Uruguay.
Coming as Uruguay neighbors Brazil and Argentina battle huge challenges to state film funding – an incentive free in Brazil, a decimation of state funding in Argentina tanks to Covid-19 – the new regulation in Uruguay looks set to accelerate a disappear of productions from Latin America and runaway international shoots to its shores.
Measures take in a qualitative leap in the ceiling put on cash rebate plus a plunge in the minimum expenditure in Uruguay required to access them.
Announced Nov. 25, the regs, framed in an Uruguay Audiovisual Program (Pua), establish four action lines. International shoots and international co-productions filming in Uruguay with a local expenditure from $300,000 to $4 million receive a 25% of spend...

The White Stripes have released a new animated video for their classic fan favorite track, “Apple Blossom,” in anticipation of the duo’s upcoming greatest hits collection, out December 4th.
The clip for the De Stijl cut was directed by the celebrated cartoonist Wartella and uses a paper cut out/silhouette style — rooted in the White Stripes’ classic red-and-white color palette — to tell the story of a distraught woman who flees on a boat and washes up on an island occupied only by a man in a lighthouse. The man...

"Gladiator" director Ridley Scott will team up again with "Joker" Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix, to play French military leader and emperor 'Napoleon':
"...the new film is an original and personal look at Napoleon's origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love 'Josephine'...
"...against a backdrop of famous battles, relentless ambition and an astounding strategic mind as a military leader..."
Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) was a French military and political leader who rose to prominence during the latter stages of the 'French Revolution' and its associated wars in Europe. As 'Napoleon I', he was 'Emperor' of the French from 1804 to 1815. His legal reform, the 'Napoleonic Code', has been a major influence on many civil law jurisdictions worldwide, but he is best known for his role in wars led against France, by a series of coalitions,...

Few countries in Latin America, and indeed the world, can boast such positive results from health and safety decisions made in the wake of the global Covid-19 pandemic. In total, Uruguay has seen only 1,611 confirmed cases, plateauing at 200 active cases for several weeks now. As a result, travel restrictions are close to none.
In practical terms, that allowed Uruguay to be the first country in Latin America to resume shooting following Covid-19 shutdowns on May 11. Since then, productions both domestic and international, have resumed shooting.
“We’ve succeeded in finding the golden balance between economic activity and sanitary prudence,” Roberto Blatt, director of Uruguay’s Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual explained to Variety. “This is vital because very few countries, if any, have achieved that balance.”
“This makes traveling and applying shooting system protocols we’ve developed over the last few months much easier,” Cimarrón’s Hernán Musaluppi explained, adding...

Uruguay’s relatively new cash rebates, which attracted the likes of Keanu Reeves-produced Netflix series “Conquest” to shoot in the capital of Montevideo, is primed for expansion by the new film-friendly government led by new President Luis Lacalle Pou, who was sworn in on March 1.
“The government is deeply committed to supporting the audiovisual industry, which it believes is an ideal medium to promote the country’s culture, exports, image and other industries,” said Roberto Blatt, director of national film institute Icau.
“Regional projects from Amazon, HBO and Netflix as well as other major players originally designed to be shot in the region are already spilling over to Uruguay, where, besides the containment of the pandemic, they enjoy special fiscal incentives, technical and creative proficiency, legal security, financial flexibility and political stability,” he asserted.

The longtime residence of the late soap opera icon Lee Phillip Bell has come up for sale, carrying an attention-grabbing, if perhaps not entirely surprising, $39 million pricetag. Well-maintained, with exquisitely curated grounds, the multi-structure estate sprawls across 2.5 acres of hilltop land in the prime lower Benedict Canyon area of Los Angeles, lording over the surrounding neighbors and offering views to the Century City and Downtown L.A. skylines.
Originally built in 1934, the property was owned in the 1940s by Academy Award-nominated actor Charles Boyer, a Hollywood leading man of the era who starred in a number of black-and-white classics, including “Gaslight,” “Algiers,” “Conquest,” and “Love Affair,” to name but a few.
In the late ’40s, Boyer sought to terminate his contract with Rko Pictures, one of the big five studios of Hollywood’s Golden Age. As part of the unusual settlement negotiations, the studio agreed to purchase his sprawling estate...

Already Brazil’s biggest film and TV hub — indeed, after Mexico City, Latin America’s second-largest shoot locale — São Paulo is now launching a production incentive revolution.
The city of São Paulo’s film-tv agency Spcine is readying Brazil’s first-ever cash rebates for international and national productions and international co-productions.
These will be introduced as soon as the Covid-19 crisis subsides, most likely after July, when productions are projected to roll once more in Brazil, says Spcine president Laís Bodanzky.
Feature films, animation, series and global commercials, plus national productions with international market potential (think Netflix series) are all eligible for rebates. Tabbed at 20%-30% of local expenditure, with a minimum local spend of $500,000, the rebates’ cap will depend on the amount of money available and currency exchange rates at the time the final text of the law is released, Bodanzky adds.
