Unlike Abbas Kiarostami, a poet of contemporary cinema whose films stopped being about Iran when he stopped making films there, Andrei Tarkovsky, Russia’s preeminent poet of the spirit, proved that while a Russian director could leave his homeland in the name of artistic freedom, he could still be imprisoned by the memories he took with him.
In his book Sculpting in Time, Tarkovsky wrote that he wanted Nostalghia, his first film after leaving Russia to escape censorship, to be “about the particular state of mind which assails Russians who are far from their native land.” Shot in Italy and written by Tarkovsky and Tonino Guerra, the film explores this acute form of nostalgia through a spiritually wearied poet, Andrei Gorchakov (Oleg Yankovskiy), who’s traveled to Italy to research the life of a composer who studied in Bologna during the late 1700s before returning to Russia to hang himself.

With no new bust-out limited releases, repertory continues to do its part for the specialty box office, the latest a 4k restoration of Nostalghia. Kino Lorber said the Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1983 film, which opened Wednesday, will gross an estimated $22.87k at Film Forum in NYC for the five days.
It’s currently the top performer at the theater and will take in more than all other films screening there combined over that period. Two additional shows at the Roxie in San Francisco and the Austin Film Society bring combined grosses to about $29.4k. Expands next week to Philadelphia and Montreal with additional markets coming later. The film about a Russian poet and his interpreter, who travel to Italy researching the life of an 18th-century composer, stars Oleg Yankovskiy, Andrei Gorchakov, Erland Josephson, Domiziana Giordano and Patrizia Terreno.

The best thing that can be said about this treading-water weekend box office is that it would have been far worse without two niche audience films. And it is the last in February, with a much better March ahead.
“Bob Marley: One Love” (Paramount) repeats as number one with a respectable $13.5 million second weekend gross. It remains a possibility to reach a domestic $100 million, though this could be close. It fell 53 percent, not bad, but that’s compared to a first weekend when it already had a first two-day total of nearly $18 million before then.
That led a weekend coming to around $60 million total gross. Let’s be honest: That’s pathetic. “Marley” is doing fine, and the Manga “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba — To the Hashira Training” (Sony) #2/ $11.6 million and the faith-based adjacent drama “Ordinary Angels” (Lionsgate) #3/$6.5 million were credible performers versus anticipated results and investment. But the...

In Andrei Tarkovsky’s penultimate film Nostalghia (1983), which he co-wrote with Michelangelo Antonioni’s longtime collaborator Tonino Guerra, Russian writer Andrei (Oleg Ivanovič Jankovskij) travels to Italy in order to research the life of composer Pavel Sosnovsky, along with his interpreter Eugenia (Domiziana Giordano), a young woman who resembles the Madonna del Parto in the famous fresco by Piero della Francesca.
Ahead of the theatrical release of the new 4K restoration, now playing at NYC’s Film Forum, we had the opportunity to speak with Giuseppe Lanci, the Italian cinematographer who shot the film and oversaw this new restoration. The 81-year-old Lanci still teaches at the Csc (National School of Cinema of Rome). In his diaries, Tarkovsky mentioned watching Nostalghia with cinematographer Sven Nykvist: “The photography made a strong impression on Nykvist. Indeed, Peppe Lanci shot the film in an extraordinary manner. This Swedish copy is much better than the one shown at Cannes,...

"To me he is a God." –Lars von Trier. Kino Lorber has revealed a new re-release trailer for Nostalghia, one of the last films Andrei Tarkovsky made in the 1980s just a few years before he passed away. This new 4K restoration of the Tarkovsky classic is set to play in limited theaters starting in February & March around the US. "Nostalghia is not so much a movie as a place to inhabit for two hours." –J. Hoberman. A Russian poet and his interpreter travel to Italy researching the life of an 18th-century composer, and instead meet a ruminative madman who tells the poet how the world may be saved. Tarkovsky said at the time that, "my wish was simply to observe a Russian who comes to Italy and discovers unexpected emotions which regard him... the drama emerges precisely from this clash between this innocent vision of the world and the...

Andrei Tarkovsky’s penultimate film, 1983’s gorgeously haunting Nostalghia, also marked new territory for the director. His first film made outside the Ussr, the Cannes Best Director winner (a prize he shared with Robert Bresson for L’Argent), was also a unique collaboration with writer Tonino Guerra, frequent collaborator of Michelangelo Antonioni, Federico Fellini, and Francesco Rosi. Now restored in 4K in 2022 by Csc – Cinetecanazionale in collaboration with Rai Cinema at Augustus Color laboratory, from the original negatives and the original soundtrack preserved at Rai Cinema, the restoration will begin rolling out on February 21 at NYC’s Film Forum via Kino Lorber and we’re pleased to exclusively unveil the trailer.
Here’s the synopsis: “Andrei Tarkovsky explained that in Russian the word ‘nostalghia’ conveys ‘the love for your homeland and the melancholy that arises from being far away.’ This debilitating form of homesickness is embodied in the film by Andrei,...

“Pellington’s boldest and most audacious film to date, an unclassifiable dance movie that plays like a cross between Wim Wenders’ Pina and Saw…Pellington moves beyond the limitations of narrative to get at something primal and raw—but also ultimately transcendent and life affirming—that perfectly conveys the transformative effects of grief and loss.”

Italian director Stefano Sollima, who is known in Hollywood for “Sicario: Day of the Soldado,” “Without Remorse” and TV show “Gomorrah,” is back behind camera on a contemporary Rome-set crimer titled “Adagio.”
Shooting started Sept. 5 on “Adagio” which features an ensemble cast of Italian A-listers comprising Pierfrancesco Favino (“Nostalgia”), Toni Servillo (“The Great Beauty”), Valerio Mastandrea (“Perfect Strangers”) and Adriano Giannini (“The Ties”).
“I am eager and full of enthusiasm about finally returning to depict my city after all these years. Rome has changed, and so have I,” Sollima said in a statement for Variety. He went on to describe “Adagio” as a dark story of revenge and redemption, which will be the last chapter of my Roman criminal trilogy.”
The previous two installments in this trilogy are “A.C.A.B: All Cops Are Bastards,” from 2012, and “Suburra,” from 2015, which was subsequently spun out into a Netflix TV series.

Italian auteur Mario Martone, who was recently in Cannes with “Nostalgia,” is set to direct a high-profile doc about the late Massimo Troisi, one of Italy’s most beloved comic actors who starred in the Oscar-winning film “Il Postino.”

The film directed by Michael Radford, which also starred Maria Grazia Cucinotta and Philippe Noiret, became an arthouse sensation one year later when it opened in the U.S. distributed by Miramax.

It's official: Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa's latest collaboration, "Potion," is our summer anthem, and we are already searching for neon lights and metallic bikinis after the music video was released today. "One Kiss" was all it took for the unstoppable duo to light up the airwaves back in 2018, and we had big expectations as it was announced they were teaming up again for Harris's sixth album, "Funk Wav Bounces Vol.2." Thankfully, their 2022 offering does not disappoint.
With a disco beat, super cool base, and undeniably catchy chorus, Lipa proves her hips don't lie in the video. Just like the song lyric suggests, it's "sprinkled with a little bit of sex appeal" (make that a lot of sex appeal). Wearing a string bikini top and ruffled sequin skirt while dancing on a lily pad, the 26-year-old perfectly encapsulates our summer vibe. Changing into a sleek slip dress and knee-high boots,...

Unlike most films and series set in Naples, “Nostalgia” really does show us the city like we’ve never seen it before: from the melancholy perspective of someone who left forty years ago. Italian director Mario Martone makes the astute and powerful decision not to make this immediately obvious, opening the film with a stunning sequence showing a man (Pierfrancesco Favino) silently arrive in and explore the city at night.

The impact of first love is incomparable, with even the tiniest details remaining rich and precise in memory even after decades have passed. Fleeting summer romances can become seismic events that shift the foundations of the self. Even after the heart has been hardened by a lifetime of disappointment, it can melt recalling those first joyful, intimate moments that stick in the mind as vivid and visceral as a recent trauma.
In ‘Nostalgia’, the first love is one that forms between two 15-year-old boys Felice and Oreste, getting into trouble on the streets of Naples, and while it is never shown to be sexual, it is deeply romantic and passionate. The two teenagers ride, arms wrapped around each other, on a moped, the Italian sunshine carefree and enraptured by each other’s presence. When Felice is beaten up by a rival gang it is Oreste that comes to his aid...

Much more of a Venice Film Festival invited guest, Nostalgia becomes Mario Martone’s second trip to the Palme comp after 1995’s L’Amore Molesto. He was in the Un Certain Regard section in 1998 with Teatro Di Guerra. Pierfrancesco Favino leads the cast.
Felice returns to his hometown of Naples. Lots has changed. His past creeps up on him.
Another film falling just underneath the average 3 bar — Nostalgia does indeed have its fans. Of the fifteen critics that graded the film – one gave it a masterpiece score and we’re currently looking at a 2.8 average.

Prolific Italian film and stage director Mario Martone, who is a Venice aficionado, is back in competition in Cannes 27 years after his Elena Ferrante adaptation “L’amore molesto” (“Troubling Love”) launched in competition from the Croisette in 1995. And there is a close connection between these two films that delve deep into the entrails of Martone’s native Naples.
In his well-received “Nostalgia”, praised by Variety as Martone’s “most rewarding film in years,” ace actor Pierfrancesco Favino plays the middle-aged Felice Lasco, who returns to the bustling port city after having lived in Egypt for 40 years. Once back, he is caught up in memories of a distant life spent in his hometown, as his criminal youth slowly catches up with him.
Martone spoke to Variety about why he adapted Neapolitan author Ermanno Rea’s novel by the same title and the elements that make it “more universal than a mere Neapolitan tale.

Nostalgia has seldom looked grittier, or more treacherous, than it does in Mario Martone’s eponymous new film. The Italian director splashes his teaming, boisterous, unruly native city of Naples across the screen in fulsome fashion in telling the story of a man who left as a teenager but, some 40 years later, is drawn back into its sinister embrace.
Largely unknown in the United States, Martone has made ten features over the past 30 years. From the evidence, he knows his way around full-blooded drama without pretense, which well suits this story of man who reacts more strongly to his return than he might have imagined.
Felice Lasco (Pierfrancesco Favino) is a tall, bearded bear of a man who abruptly turns up one day in Naples to surprise his aged mother. Felice is clearly a man of some means and it remains mysterious, nay, deeply disturbing as to why hasn’t...

Hometowns forget us quickly when we leave them, even if some of the people left behind do not. Architecture, infrastructure and whole communities can change with scant warning or regard for our memories, or our bearings when we return. When you go home again — and you can, contrary to the popular adage — even what you remember has to be reintroduced to you; sidewalks once accustomed to your footprints have to be broken in again, like a new pair of shoes. For Felice, an unmoored Italian expat visiting Naples after a four-decade absence, it’s not what he recognizes of his home city that brings him comfort, but the new, younger life surging past the ghosts that kept him away so long. “Nostalgia” is thus a barbed title for Mario Martone’s gruffly lyrical urban portrait: Sometimes you need to go back, the film says, but it’s best to keep looking forward as you do.

Italian actor-turned-director Andrea Di Stefano, who helmed well-received U.S. indie thrillers “Escobar: Paradise Lost,” with Benicio del Toro, and “The Informer,” is set to make “L’Ultima Notte di Amore,” his Italian-language debut.
Universal Pictures Intl., Focus Features, and Italy’s Vision Distribution have worldwide distribution rights on the pic, which toplines Pierfrancesco Favino (Cannes competition title “Nostalgia” from Mario Martone).
The film’s title, which translates as “The Last Night of Love,” is a play on words. Amore actually refers to a police lieutenant named Franco Amore. On the night before his retirement the lieutenant is called to investigate a crime scene where his best friend and long-time partner Dino has been killed during a diamond heist. We soon find out that Amore was involved in the diamond heist and learn how the love of his wife Viviana will help him survive this fatal night.

It’s his first time back since he left the bustling port city for Egypt some 40 years ago. The 2022 Cannes Film Festival has revealed its competition jury, with “Titane” and “Fire” star Vincent Lindon presiding as President of the Jury to mark the 75th anniversary of the festival.
Lindon is the first French actor to be Jury President in over a decade, since Isabelle Huppert helmed the jury in 2009. In the history of the Festival, French celebrities have often held this role in an anniversary year, such as Yves Montand in 1987 for the 40th Festival, Gérard Depardieu in 1993 for the 45th Festival, and Isabelle Adjani in 1997 for the 50th.
The festival is set to take place May 17 through May 28, resuming in-person festivities for the second year in a row after last year’s return to normal (albeit two months later than usual).
Rebecca Hall, Deepika Padukone, Noomi Rapace, Asghar Farhadi, Ladj Ly, Jeff Nichols, and Joachim Trier also serve as jury members.

Italy’s True Colours has taken world sales on Italian director Mario Martone’s Cannes competition entry “Nostalgia,” starring Pierfrancesco Favino, who is known to Cannes audiences as the protagonist of Marco Bellocchio’s 2019 drama “The Traitor.”
Set in Martone’s native Naples, “Nostalgia” sees Favino play the middle-aged Felice Lasco, who returns to the bustling port city after having lived in Egypt for 40 years. Once back, he drowns into the memories of a distant life he spent in his hometown.
Martone will be returning to a Cannes competition berth with “Nostalgia” 27 years after his Elena Ferrante adaptation “L’amore molesto” (“Troubling Love”) launched in competition from the Croisette in 1995. His “The Scent of Blood” was in Directors’ Fortnight in 2004.
But the Neapolitan film and stage director has mostly been a Venice aficionado, most recently with “The Mayor of Rione Sanità” in 2019 and “The King of Laughter” in 2021, both sold by True Colours.

Cinephiles were drooling early Thursday morning over what was cooking at Cannes. Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Frémaux unleashed the competition and out-of-competition slate for 2022, and it is très formidable.
Eighteen movies from across the globe will compete for the Palme D’or. (Don’t be surprised if another title slips in between now and opening night; last-minute additions are common occurrences.) The big guns are as follows:
David Cronenberg will make his return to whacked-out weirdo body horror with “Crimes of the Future.” After last year’s win for “Titane,” don’t count this one out for the top prize. The film stars Cronenberg vet Viggo Mortensen plus Léa Seydoux (a Cannes regular who had to skip last summer’s fest after testing positive for Covid) and Kristen Stewart. Not much is known about the picture, other than it shares a title with a one-hour feature with non-synchronous sound...

As a young child, Steven Spielberg’s Hook was one of my favorite movies. The kind where you’d wear out the VHS tape and your parents’ patience when such a thing was possible (today only parents’ nerves can fray). It wasn’t until I was older that I became aware that almost every grown-up loathed that picture in ‘91—including my parents. And Spielberg. Yet when I watch that movie still, I can’t really see the flaws. Nostalgia and John Williams’ sonic joys are too blinding.
The memory of this came back while watching Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Which is not to say that one should draw a direct line of comparison between Sonic director Jeff Fowler and Steven Spielberg, even at the latter’s most saccharine. If there was a ‘90s family movie equivalent to Sonic 2, it might be one of those Beethoven sequels given how many...
