Shaw's disjointed sci-fi spoof

Warning: Spoilers
TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE STAR (not to be confused with the LUCKY STARS film that came later) is an oddball Shaw Brothers flick that might just be the strangest they ever made. It's not very good, but it has its moments; overall it's more of a disjointed collection of random scenes and sequences, generally riffing on STAR WARS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND throughout. A couple of low-life heroes become involved with Cherie Cheung, being set up to marry the scion of a wealthy family. There are Dr Jekyll gags, a scene on the railway tracks, song and dance numbers, and a superhero wearing a Shaw vest (!). Exaggerated acting is the order of the day, but the surreal humour tends to test the patience rather than make you laugh, and things only really impress during the lengthy climax featuring the Darth Vader wannabe.

It is so hard to explain this film verbally to someone. It is a sci-fi action comedy with music. It is literally all over the map. You can't say it doesn't have imagination, its just flat out off the wall. I had no idea what was coming next. The beautiful Cherie Chung is in it, and that is one reason to watch. She was some presence (she has presumably retired, she hasn't been in films in some time) and you will know that by the first scene she is in. She gets her shoes stuck on a grating and, like Marilyn Monroe, the dress goes up, but for much longer. This causes a major traffic pileup (not a surprise, she looks amazing in the scene and throughout the film). There are side stories here, but what it all boils down to is this is a film in which the writers used the kitchen sink approach. They put a Stars Wars type fight in it, put a little Triad action and even had Cherie being saved on the railroad tracks. Not a good film in the classic sense, its fine. Not to be confused with "Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Star". Much more of a guy film, especially since Cherie Chung is in it. Not a serious film, just expect mindless, somewhat imaginative entertainment and you'll get along just fine.
