TikTok is giving some users the ability to post hour-long videos. The app is running a test that expands its maximum upload length from ten minutes all the way up to 60.
Matt Navarra, a consultant who is known for spotting new features on social media platforms, was among the first people to notice the 60-minute runtime test. TikTok later confirmed to TechCrunch that some users now have access to hour-long content. While any creator could potentially benefit from posting long-form videos, that format is particularly useful in categories like beauty, cooking, education, and comedy.
Though TikTok used short-form content to put itself on the map, it has progressively increased the maximum runtime of its videos. The uptick to ten minutes arrived in 2022. Two years later, Navarra spotted a test that bumped the max up to 30 minutes.
By doubling that parameter once again, TikTok is supporting its ongoing investment in long-form products.

Instagram wants to help creators design chatbots that can interact with fans on their behalf. The Meta-owned app is testing a program called Creator AI that will facilitate direct messages between influencers and their followers.
According to the New York Times, Creator AI is currently in the early stages of testing. The plan is to mimic the voices of participating creators in order to outsource fan interactions to automated systems. The AIs will be trained based on data supplied by the creators, which could include Instagram posts, direct messages, comments, and audio from Reels and Instagram Stories. Creators would also be able to choose specific phrases to use in replies to fans.
The Times report cites “people briefed on [Instagram’s] plans.” Those insiders were not able to provide details about specific influencers who are participating in the Creator AI test due to nondisclosure agreements they signed. Meta declined to comment on the Times report.

The Avatar: The Last Airbender fans know just how hard it is for all the Avatars who have been bestowed with the responsibility of protecting human beings from the threats of the spirit world. While all of them exercise great strength and power to overpower evil, they also have to leave behind their own desires to fulfill their duty of serving the world.
Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Yet even through that, each successor of this league of heroes is connected to their predecessors throughout their lives, gaining access to their consciousness to continue to fight for what’s right. All except for Korra, who loses this ability at one point in time. And in doing so, revealed a major and extremely dark storyline about the saga that we never quite realized existed.

Elon Musk really, really, really wants to make video a thing on X. He’s been courting MrBeast for months, trying to convince YouTube‘s most-subscribed-to creator to post his much-viewed content on X (with…some degree of success?).
Now he claims to be going after YouTube’s living room TV viewership: According to a quote-retweet from Musk, X is apparently working on an app that’ll let users watch long-form video content on their smart TVs.
He quote-retweeted someone named “DogeDesigner,” whose original tweet included a stock image of a TV screen and the sentence, “You can soon watch your favorite long form videos directly on your SmartTVs.”
“Coming soon,” Musk commented.

He didn’t give any details about the app, but Engadget reports it’ll roll out on Samsung TVs and Amazon Fire TVs. When? We don’t know.

Well, everyone, the winners for the 22nd Annual Golden Schmoes for the year 2023 are in. As expected, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer walked away the big winner, earning nine Schmoes. It took home most of the big prizes, including Best Movie, Actor, Supporting Actor, Director, Screenplay, Poster, Trailer, Line of the Year and Best Sequence. While an excellent showing that beat the seven wins Everything Everywhere All At Once took home last year, it still falls short of our all-time winner here at the Schmoes, Nolan’s own The Dark Knight, which won an amazing 12 awards.
Otherwise, the winners were an eclectic mix. Godzilla Minus One, which is now widely considered the greatest Kaiju movie ever made, took home three awards, including Best VFX, which is impressive considering how small its budget was compared to the competition. Third place was an interesting tie, with John Wick: Chapter 4, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,...

Before the Oscar nominations were announced, it was a head-scratcher to determine what movies would make up the category of Best Visual Effects. With the lineup being one of the most unusual selections in recent memory, having no Best Picture nominee, there is a case for many of these contenders to edge out a victory. And while there are many statistics and comparisons that can be used to determine which film will ultimately take home the statue, sometimes passion is all one needs to win an Oscar, and there is one film that stands out from the rest with wide support. Let’s examine why “Godzilla Minus One” may overcome the stats to win Best Visual Effects at the Oscars.
The Japanese kaiju film is directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who also serves as one of the visual effects artists alongside Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi and Tatsuji Nojima. “Godzilla” competes with “The Creator,...

TikTok just held its biggest creator summit yet, and used the event to announce it’s making two big changes in monetization: first, it’s bringing the Creativity Program out of beta, and second, it’s expanding Live Subscriptions beyond live content.
The Creativity Program, as you probably know, is TikTok’s replacement for the $1 billion let’s-get-creators-paid fund it established in 2020. It first introduced the Creativity Program around this time last year, paying out only on videos longer than 60 seconds.
As TikTok revealed at its For Creators: Future Formats Summit today in Los Angeles, that stipulation is remaining as the program comes out of beta, but one thing that isn’t staying is the name. TikTok has gone from Creator Fund to Creativity Program and now to the (possibly permanent?) moniker Creator Rewards Program.

Rogue One and The Creator director Gareth Edwards is set to begin filming on his Jurassic World sequel on the 31st July. More here:
In the face of at least one major production setback that we know about, Universal is keen to get going on the next Jurassic World (or Jurassic Park) movie.
In early February, The Fall Guy and Atomic Blonde's David Leitch was announced as director, only for him to depart mere days later. In his place comes Gareth Edwards, whose terrific sci-fi thriller The Creator – his first film since 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – has since been nominated for an Oscar.
It now looks as though a Jurassic filming date has been set by Universal – as spotted by World Of Reel, the Film & Television Industry Alliance’s website lists its start date as the 31st July, 2024.

The outlet reports that Edwards is in talks to helm the feature that was briefly set to be directed by Bullet Train filmmaker David Leitch.
Universal and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners have set a theatrical release date for the new Jurassic World movie: July 2, 2025.
The new movie is expected to be completely fresh take on a Jurassic era with Jurassic World cast members Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard not expected to return. You get the feeling from talking to four of the Oscar-nominated members from the sound team of the sci-fi action thriller “The Creator” – supervising sound editor/sound designers Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van der Ryn, sound mixer Ian Voigt and rerecording mixer Tom Ozanich – that they have never been through anything quite like the adventure they just experienced providing the sonics for this feature. It was shot on location in many countries throughout Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Nepal, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos, the director Gareth Edwards eschewing backlot and green screen while recreating the vibe of a small indie production. “We shot it guerilla style, but then fuse all of this technology into what looks and sounds like a $300 million movie but isn’t,” stresses Aadahl.

X will soon allow brands and marketers to “run ads against a curated list of premium content creators.”
“[W]ith the diversity of perspectives on X expanding, we are enabling a new opportunity for advertisers to connect to their customers by aligning with some of the world’s best content creators,” X, which lost major advertisers like Disney, Apple, and Ibm last year due to rampant antisemitism on the platform, said in a company blog post.
Called Creator Targeting, the program lets advertisers use X’s self-serve ad manager to “to run pre-roll video ads against the video content of their chosen creator(s) in both the home timeline and profile.” In the future, Creator Targeting will have yet narrower capabilities, allowing advertisers to run ads against a single creator’s content.

A pair of YouTube insiders are bringing their industry knowledge to a 30-day online course. Colin and Samir have partnered with Kajabi to launch an educational series called Creator Startup.
The course is described as a “live-cohort series” that will include group sessions, guided exercises, and social components. Colin Rosenblum and Samir Chaudry possess many creator economy insights and connections, but their Kajabi course will specifically focus on the business side of their career. A press release from Kajabi describes audience, value prop, process, and monetization as the pillars of the Creator Startup program.
Kajabi CEO Ahad Khan said that Creator Startup will teach students “how to build consistent revenue” on their channels. He described Colin and Samir’s creator economy insights as “unmatched,” though Kajabi is no stranger to the burgeoning online video business. This weekend the visual effects branch presented its annual bakeoff, a pre-nomination-voting event featuring its category’s 10 shortlisted movies. Branch members got a look at an impressive and diverse range of work from big-budget tentpoles such as Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, to the $15 million Godzilla Minus One from Japan’s Toho, to a rare animated feature, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Speaking with the help of a translator, the Godzilla Minus One team of potential nominees offered a charming look at their work, which involved innovation—from character work to water—to complete the film’s 610 VFX shots with the constraints of a shoestring budget and just 35 artists. That unique situation also meant that Godzilla was one of several movies whose four potential nominees for creative contributions—in this case, including the film’s director Takashi Yamazaki and a compositor, Tatsuji Nojima—were not the more typical...

Gareth Edwards’ return to filmmaking this year with The Creator was, for our money, something of a triumph. Big fans of Edwards here, and also big fans of the film, as you can see from our review.
The movie was very clearly made for the big screen, but also, it should be something of a home cinema workout as well. Now we have the confirmation that it’s going to be one of the first big physical media releases of the year in the UK in 2024, as Disney has dated the film for January 15th 2024.
That’s a few weeks behind the US release (it’s coming to disc in the states in December), and we’d anticipate the digital release being a little way in advance of that.

For the past few years, direct response marketing has ruled podcasts.
But there’s a new king in town.
The Iab just released its eighth annual podcast report, and for the first time, brand spending beat out direct response. And when I say beat, I mean beat: brand spending now accounts for 61% of all podcast marketing, while direct response is down to 39%. That’s a big shift from 2016-2017, when direct response was the undisputed champ, and from 2018-2021, when it and brand advertising were a somewhat even split.

The Creator director Gareth Edwards commented on the chances of his latest blockbuster getting a sequel or spin-off.
Original big-budget sci-fi films are a rarity these days. In that particular genre, the world is so used to getting new entries in an existing franchise or remakes of an old one that something completely new is all but an endangered species.
Yet, thanks to 20th Century Studios and Disney, audiences have gotten The Creator, a fresh story made for the big screen. The movie explores the idea of AI and how the world would look if half had banned the revolutionary technology while the other continued to embrace it.

Linktree has delivered the 2023 edition of its annual Creator Report. The link-in-bio company pulled data from its 40 million users to highlight the content strategies, websites, and ventures that have trended up over the past year.
Though Linktree is a notable name in the creator economy, its latest report devotes more space to a different ecosystem: The so-called “attention economy.” Approximately 200 million creators are competing to get the attention of viewers who feel more overwhelmed then ever. Linktree reported that 40% of people are “overwhelmed” by the amount of choice on the internet, and the average attention span is one-third as long as it was in 2004.
Naturally, Linktree sees itself as an antidote for the overstuffed viewer experience. Its link-in-bio service connects multiple platforms in one convenient location, and creators are using that tool to bring together more than 7.5 million websites. The 2023 report states that only 25% of the 100 million Linktree links that...

He’s captivated our imaginations with iconic monsters and futuristic space battles, using a symphony of light, scale, sound, and mastery over visual effects. Oh, and he really knows how to make Darth Vader scary. No, we’re not talking about George Lucas. We’re talking about Gareth Edwards. Though we might as well be talking about Lucas, given how much the Welsh filmmaker channels the former’s philosophy into his work. It also helps that he has a penchant for inspired collaborations with Ilm (Industrial Light and Magic) while proving himself a distinct, spiritual voice in science fiction.

Zakiya Dalila Harris’ novel “The Other Black Girl” has hit the small screen in ten episodes filled with songs that support the story’s underlying message of compromising identity and Blackness in a majority-white workplace. Developed by Harris and Rashida Jones, who contributed the intro montage, to Episode 7 set to Anita Baker’s “Sweet Love,” the series crosses multiple genres from comedy to thriller and provides social commentary on how minority Poc employees compromise and navigate the social system of corporate America.
Set to Sza, TLC, Busta Rhymes, H.E.R., Janelle Monae and more, many scenes in the show become even stronger with the songs in the background. Co-showrunners Gus Hickey and Jordan Reddout left the ending open for a potential second season. The suspense and humor go hand in hand with the soundtrack for “The Other Black Girl.”

Gareth Edwards first made a splash with Monsters, a sci-fi horror movie which was made for less than $500,000. He quickly made the leap to much bigger budgets with Godzilla and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The experience on those films prompted Edwards to take a nearly seven-year break from Hollywood, but he’s back on the scene with The Creator, an original sci-fi action thriller starring John David Washington.
While speaking with SFX Magazine, Gareth Edwards discussed why he needed to take a break after Rogue One. “I needed to get off the merry-go-round, do you know what I mean?” Edwards said. “In Hollywood, you can get stuck on the hamster wheel, or whatever analogy you want to use. I just wanted to get off and have a break to take some time thinking about the next thing.“

Fighting against the impending dangers of AI is nothing new, but Gareth Edwards' new film "The Creator" is a sci-fi story prioritizing the human elements of a potential, dystopian future. During a Q&a following a 30-minute preview of the film (read our footage reaction here), Edwards talked at length about how "The Twilight Zone" has influenced his work and approach to storytelling.
"That's probably why I like science fiction because there is that chance [to add social commentary]," he said. "You can also sneak it under the radar." Genre creatives have been using horror and science fiction as vehicles for sociological storytelling since the earliest days of movie-making, but "The Twilight Zone," which Edwards called his "favorite TV show growing up," was revolutionary.
"Rod Serling, who wrote a lot of those shows, the reason he did science fiction was because he could get it under the radar of the censors and say things...

Soon, the never-ending barrage of films based on existing IP will be briefly interrupted when "The Creator" debuts. "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" director Gareth Edwards is at the helm for this futuristic adventure, which explores the highly relevant issue of AI and its relationship to humans. But as well as touching on real-world issues and attempting to inject some humanity into its fantastical narrative, "The Creator" is also an all-out action spectacle.
In a behind-the-scenes video from Industrial Light and Magic, one of the VFX houses that worked on "The Creator," Edwards says, "My favorite cinema is very visually driven. It's not like a play. It's like a dream," adding that he'd aimed to create "a really insane, rich, visual journey." John David Washington, who stars as ex-special forces agent Joshua, certainly seemed impressed by the results, adding that he admired the "magical realism that [Edwards] was able to execute.

As a genre, sci-fi inherently lends itself to reinterpretations and predictions and cautionary tales about our own trajectory as a species. Every time humanity comes to a certain set of pivotal crossroads, the choices we make can go on to define the next several decades of our history. It's a simultaneously comforting and terrifying thought, revealing just how much agency we actually have as a collective. Thankfully, the more entertaining and much less existential version of this train of thought applies to movies like "The Creator," which, in many ways, seems to be arriving at the perfect moment in time.
It's no use pretending otherwise: we couldn't possibly hide our excitement for whatever "Godzilla" and "Rogue One" director Gareth Edwards has up his sleeve with his next big-budget genre movie. That hype was dialed up a couple of notches with the recent early look at various scenes from "The Creator,...

San Francisco, July 14 (Ians) Twitter on Friday announced that it has launched a new ads revenue sharing programme for creators.
“We’re expanding our creator monetisation offering to include ads revenue sharing for creators. This means that creators can get a share in ad revenue starting in the replies to their posts. This is part of our effort to help people earn a living directly on Twitter,” the company said on the ‘Creator Ads Revenue Sharing’ page.
The programme will be available in all the countries where Stripe supports payouts.
“We are rolling out to an initial group who will be invited to accept payment,” the platform added.
When one user tweeted, “Since Elon is monetised will be nice to see what his payout is”, the Twitter-owner replied: “I gave my share to the creator payout pool.”
In response to another tweet, Musk said: “Anyone engaging in repeated theft of posts be demonetised.

Fyi, Tubefilter has a podcast.
It’s hosted by our very own Joshua Cohen (that’s me) and Lauren Schnipper. Subscribe to Creator Upload on Apple Podcasts. We’re everywhere else, too. Just go to CreatorUpload.com.
When social platforms reach a certain size, there’s something akin to a gravitational pull compelling individuals in charge to want to produce original programming.
It makes sense on paper: You’re an online video sharing site or a social media network that’s basically 100% composed of user-generated and professional content that’s coming from individuals and entities outside of your organization. Those users and professionals could go to many other places to upload their content. They often do! And entire businesses have been built to facilitate them doing so.
But you get jealous easily and you don’t want viewers doing things on other platforms. You want the viewers to watch all the things on your platform.

There is a great deal of controversy surrounding the creation of Batman. For many years, sole creative credit for the character was given to artist Bob Kane, who often spoke eloquently about his character. It wasn't until years later that a co-creator, Bill Finger, entered the conversation. Kane and Finger's relationship with Batman and each other is detailed in a Hulu documentary film called "Batman and Bill," and a 2012 book called "Bill the Boy Wonder: The Secret Co-Creator of Batman." It seems that Finger had a lot more to do with how audiences know Batman than Kane ever did, and only ever operated as a ghostwriter for DC Comics. Finger died in poverty in 1974. It wouldn't be until the 1980s that Kane would admit, only passingly, that Finger contributed as much as he did to the character. Eventually, Finger would be given posthumous credit. Kane himself passed in 1998 as a celebrated millionaire.
