It’s been another blockbuster year for horror, but then again it always feels like that. Superhero fatigue has set in and major franchise pictures haven’t returned as expected, but horror, as ever, always seems to reach new heights. The news in 2023 may have been a load of gout, but the horror has been pure gold.
So, without further ado, here is a list of my top 10 of 2023.
RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop
Arrow Films, Vinegar Syndrome and others who have perfected the art of producing feature-length behind the scenes documentaries really have their work cut out for them thanks to RoboDoc. RoboDoc has broken the mould by creating an in-depth documentary that takes you through the entire film scene-by-scene. RoboDoc combines a retrospective documentary, director’s commentary and behind the scenes features into one glorious 4-part series.

In these challenging times it was good to see that the horror community could still come together and pitch in and help out those in need. Here's some good news to cap off your day. The third annual Joe Bob’s Ghoultide Get-Together premiered on Friday, December 16th live on the Shudder TV feed. Briggs presented two films that night, Don't Open Till Christmas and A Christmas Horror Story. During the broadcast he and Darcy the Mail Girl among other things raised awareness about four charities who would get the proceeds from a charity auction run during and after the live broadcast. Viewers responded in spades and by the time the charity auction concluded days later it had raised over 200,000 to be split...

Listening to the lyrics of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town," it's easy to read a menacing tone from its warnings. Saint Nick sees you when you're sleeping. He even knows your sins. So you better watch out ... or else.
The idea of a less jolly Santa is a wellspring of humor and broken spines in Tommy Wirkola's "Violent Night," which sees David Harbour's Santa Claus doling out "season's beatings" in defense of a child on his coveted "good" list. As "Violent Night" steers its sleigh into theaters this week, moviegoers are treated to the sight of a hammer-swinging, street-fighting Father Christmas, bedecked in Celtic tattoos and crushing the heads and hearts of numerous henchmen commanded by John Leguizamo's holiday-hating mercenary Jimmy "Scrooge" Martinez. Pat Casey and Josh Miller's script ensures that nearly every holiday element finds its gruesome employment at the hands of Santa or Scrooge: tinsel becomes a garrote,...

If you're reading FEARnet.com, chances are good that you already know about all the Christmas movies that the horror genre has to offer. There are classics like Bob Clark's 1974 masterpiece Black Christmas, the controversial Silent Night, Deadly Night from 1984, and the schlocky Don't Open Till Christmas from the very same year. What many of you might not remember, however, if you haven't seen them in the last decade are some of the crazy (and festive) evil implements of death used to decimate innocent people in the films. Everything from deer antlers and icicles to toy soldiers and Christmas trees find their way into the hands of evil. Check out our list below and be sure to pop into the comments section to let us know...

Mondo Macabro makes their return from a long silence with the Christmas themed UK slasher Don't Open Till Christmas. This somewhat obscure film is directed by and stars Edmund Purdom, and features several relative unknowns in the story of a maniac killing Santa Clauses around London in particularly nasty ways. The film itself isn't anything outstanding, but it is nice to have an excellent DVD edition from Mondo Macabro. They've prepared a perfectly watchable new anamorphic transfer from the negative and the include several very cool bonus features to sweeten the pot. If you like slashers, I'd definitely pick this one up, for both the film and the extras."Don't Open Till Christmas," directed by and starring Edmund Purdom, celebrates Christmas time in London - a...

Mondo Macabro, one of the most versatile independent video labels on the planet, has just signed an exclusive agreement with Danger After Dark for distribution. The first release of the new partnership will be UK slasher, Don't Open Till Christmas, fully uncut and featuring over an hour of bonus material, coming December 6th. I can't help but think that this is good news, Mondo Macabro has been fairly quiet this year, but the few titles they've released most recently have been fantastic, and hopefully this will usher in a new, more productive, era for Pete Tombs' and Andy Starke's amazing company.Danger After Dark to Distributemondo MacAbro Library In North AMERICAThe holiday fun begins with ultimate festive DVD release:1984's UK-slasher horror "Don't Open Till Christmas"re-mastered and...

Forget heartwarming morality tales and scenes of chestnut roasting in front of open fires - the best Christmas films, from Gremlins to Bad Santa, take Hallowe'en as their inspiration
It may be the season to be jolly, but every so often something cinematic rears its ugly head to challenge that sugar-coated notion - and this year it's Finnish filmmaker Jalmari Helander's myth-defying debut. Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale is an anti-Christmas horror fantasy that transforms the cuddly, present-delivering Santa Claus of fable into a 21st-century boogie man - reminiscent of a vengeful incarnation from the pages of Struwwelpeter. Never mind receiving lumps of coal for punishment, this Santa snatches naughty children while they sleep, boils them in cauldrons and replaces them in bed with sinister dolls. Unearthed from his Lapland mountain coffin, Mr Claus is coming to town - and kids had really better watch out.
