Writer/director Kevin S. Tenney’s 1986 horror film Witchboard is one of my all-time favorites, and I also enjoy the 1993 sequel Witchboard 2: The Devil’s Doorway, which has previously received a Blu-ray release from Olive Films. Yesterday, Tenney took to his Facebook account to share a picture of him with Witchboard 2 star Ami Dolenz and reveal that a Blu-ray re-release was in the works at some unspecified company… but, unfortunately, has been postponed indefinitely for reasons Tenney didn’t reveal.
Tenney wrote, “Hung out with the lovely and talented Ami Dolenz while she gave an on-camera interview in her living room for a Blu-ray re-release of Witchboard 2, which was due to come out earlier this year. This is the only on-camera interview she’s ever recorded for our film as far as I know, but unfortunately its release has been postponed indefinitely for the time being…“

World premieres of Jayro Bustamante’s Rita and the Adams Family’s Hell Hole are among the first wave of the 28th edition of Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal running July 18-August 4.
Rita marks Bustamante’s follow-up to 2019 Venice Giornate degli Autori winner and Guatemalan Oscar submission La Llorona. It follows an abused teenage girl’s attempted escape from a government safe house and is inspired by the true story of a deadly orphanage fire in Guatemala.

It’s almost time for the Fantasia Film Festival! North America’s premiere genre festival has become the place to be if you’re a horror aficionado, and as a proud Montrealer, I get a kick out of the fact that it all takes place in my home city. I’ve been attending the festival for many years, and I always end up seeing some incredible movies. Last year’s Fantasia featured the Canadian premiere of what’s probably the best horror movie of the last year or so – Late Night With The Devil, and this year’s program seems certain to be another winner, with Fantasia announcing the first wave of titles today.
Here are some of the highlights:

Four months of horror releases down, eight to go! With our 2024 Horror Preview, we’re looking ahead at some of the other horror movies we can’t wait to check out this year. For now, we’re only including movies that have a known release date, so films like the remakes/reboots of The Toxic Avenger and Witchboard are currently absent because they don’t have a release date yet, even though they’re likely to show up at some point in 2024. Here we go:

Celebrating its 35th anniversary, 1988’s Night of the Demons is a perfect Halloween party movie; not merely because the plot involves a Halloween party, but it embodies the spirit of the holiday.
Director Kevin Tenney (Witchboard) and writer Joe Augustyn veer between creepy and campy throughout the 90-minute runtime. A playfully spooky atmosphere is immediately established by the Scooby Doo-esque animated credit sequence set to a bombastic synth theme by the director’s brother, Dennis Michael Tenney.
The plot follows a group of rowdy high schoolers to a deadly party at the infamous Hull House. As goth hostess Angela Franklin (Amelia Kinkade) explains, the abandoned abode is possessed rather than haunted: “The spirits living in a house possessed never existed in human form. They’ve only existed in spirit form. They’re pure evil. They’re demons.” A seance awakens the spirits, who start turning the partygoers into savage demons.

Writer/director Kevin S. Tenney’s 1986 horror classic Witchboard (watch it Here) is getting the remake treatment couresty of director Chuck Russell, who was bringing us the likes of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and the remake of The Blob back in the days when Witchboard was gathering its earliest fans. The Witchboard remake doesn’t have a release date yet, but an early look trailer has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above!
According to Deadline, Russell intends to go beyond the original Witchboard IP “with a deeper storyline, high intensity scares and imaginative visuals”. As such, the screenplay he has written with Greg McKay sounds quite different from the original film. Here’s the synopsis: Emily, her fiancé Christian and a group of their friends open an organic café, refurbishing an old carriage house in New Orleans’ French Quarter. But...

Following the one-two punch of 1986’s Witchboard and 1988’s Night of the Demons — both of which yielded sizable profits in the video store market — filmmaker Kevin Tenney was eager to return to his independent roots and make a movie without interference. He and his team managed to raise $400,000 with the caveat that it had to be used within a short time frame. As a result, Tenney wrote the script in a mere six days.
The result is 1989’s Witchtrap, so named in a thinly-veiled effort to capitalize on his previous success. (The feature was preceded on VHS with a forthright notice to viewers: “This motion picture is not a sequel to Witchboard.”) The rushed script turned out to be only the first of several issues that would haunt the production.
Tenney populated the cast with amateur actors who had appeared in his early student films as a show of gratitude.

Writer/director Kevin S. Tenney’s 1986 horror classic Witchboard (watch it Here) is one of my all-time favorites, and we’ve been hearing rumblings of a remake for a long time now. Going all the way back to the 2007, in fact. Cyrus: Mind of a Serial Killer director Mark Vadik was attached to write and direct the film in 2011, then in 2019 we heard that Chuck Russell – whose credits include A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, The Blob (1988), The Mask, Eraser, and The Scorpion King – had signed on to direct the film. And it looks like the Witchboard remake is actually going to happen with Russell at the helm. Deadline reports that Russell has even found the first cast member for the project: Jamie Campbell Bower, who caught a lot of attention last year for playing the villainous Vecna (pictured below) in season 4 of Stranger Things.

In the first two minutes of Talk to Me from Danny and Michael Philippou, the directing duo completely knocked me on my ass, and then continued to propel me forward on this truly twisted journey for the next 90 minutes or so that kept me guessing about the things that I was seeing as well as where this story was headed. So, by the time Talk to Me was over, I felt like I had just run a marathon. But without a doubt, Talk to Me is probably one of the most exciting horror debuts to come along in some time, as the Philippou brothers do a great job of taking some tried and true tropes into the 21st century and turning them squarely on their heads, as well as crafting several grisly sequences that left me genuinely unsettled.

All eight original “Harry Potter” films from Warner Bros. are returning to HBO Max next month, after spending a little less than a year on NBCUniversal’s Peacock.

When a new low-budget horror film copies Jessica Harper’s car-bound arrival from the original Suspiria within its first ten minutes, one knows instantly what territory they’re in, as amalgamating scenes and stylistic tics of various ‘70s and ‘80s horror classics has basically been the standard process for a whole decade’s worth of genre film. At the point where you’re just waiting for the obligatory split-diopter shot to show up, it’s hard to not get the feeling of the genre going into a bit of a death spiral. And, when aside from maybe two good blood spurts, the film seems to be lightly ashamed to even be a slasher––not relishing in the deaths at all, or even generating much in the way of tension––there’s an even bigger problem at hand.
Though in the case of Seance, the Suspiria connection goes further, as new...

If you’re a diehard Dawes fan, you’ll notice something instantly familiar in the first verse of new song “Between the Zero and the One”: Its melody is incredibly similar to that of “Most People,” a beloved highlight from 2013’s Stories Don’t End.
“Between the Zero and the One” — which is still worth multiple listens, even if you’re not already a close follower of the band’s work — appears on Dawes’ seventh studio album, Good Luck With Whatever. The album’s through line is a sense...

It may not be the best horror movie of the ’80s, but movies like Night of the Demons are the reason we love ’80s horror. Gory, funny, sexy, scary, and silly, it’s the total package of a certain type of horror film that made so many of us fall for the genre in the first place. It’s like mainlining 88 minutes of monstrous fun directly into our horror-loving hearts.
The story is a simple one: goth girl Angela (Amelia Kinkade) is having a Halloween party at an abandoned mortuary that’s supposedly been haunted since a series of grisly murders were committed years earlier. She gathers a group of friends, some booze, and some music, but things don’t go exactly as planned and before you know it, Angela is conducting a séance to pass the time. Unfortunately, she conjures up a long-dormant demonic spirit in the process, which...

While there’s been a great resurgence in the horror genre in recent years, some of you may agree with me in saying that there are still a lot of stinkers to be found out there. And while movies like Witchboard will always pale in comparison to the likes of Halloween and The Shining, it still seems like we get five Annabelles for every It. It’s just the way of things.
As you can imagine, I didn’t mention Halloween by accident. Not only does anything in that franchise come with a certain pedigree, but it was also the brainchild of the man we’re talking about today, that being legendary filmmaker John Carpenter.
Of course, when anyone has been in the game for as long as he has, it’s only understandable that folks like to know which of today’s offerings strike their fancy. Oddly enough, the...

Even if you’ve never seen them, if you’re a horror fan, you’ve likely heard something about both Night of the Demons, as well as Witchboard. Witchboard being the lesser known title. Both film spawned several sequels that ranged from great, to “well, there were boobs.” Both films were brought to us by the same director, which shows in some ways, but not enough to feel derivative. Another thing these films have in common, is that I have only seen them both a couple of times, and all of that was from rental VHS copies. It’s not that I didn’t like them enough to purchase them on DVD when they made the switch, it’s just that when you’re managing such a huge collection, it’s hard to remember every title you’ve ever liked enough to make it your own. Nevertheless, here we are...

The first trailer for the teen horror movie Ouija has arrived online, and you can watch it below. It's kind of surprising that there hasn't been a Ouija board-centric horror movie since 1986's Witchboard, starring Whitesnake music-video model Tawny Kitaen. Sure, the paranormal communication device has popped up in movies since then - its most notable recent appearance in Paranormal Activity - but people have stayed away from it as the crux of a horror movie. Leave it to producers Michael Bay and Jason Blum to change that. Ouija stars Olivia Cooke, Ana Coto, Daren Kagasoff, Bianca A. Much to my dismay, I had to miss Scream Facotyr’s second Summer of Fear Drive-in presentation of Kevin Tenney’s Night of the Demons. I was able to catch the screening of John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13, though, and it was a lot of fun to watch the film with a bunch of like-minded individuals, having a good time on twitter, and seeing some new interviews with the man himself for the first time. I’m assuming the Night of the Demons screening was equally as awesome. A whole bunch of Scream Factory goodness was dropped into our inbox this morning, so let's forgo the usual chit-chat and cut right to the chase!
First up, the world's greatest distribution company announced on their Facebook page that they're bringing three titles to Blu-ray for the very first time this coming fall, kicking off with a double feature release of 1972's Tales from the Crypt and 1973's The Vault of Horror.
The two classic British anthology films will be housed together as a double feature on Blu-ray (both for the first time) and Vault will be presented in its uncut form.
Also announced was the 1985 grave robber thriller The Doctor and the Devils, which was produced by Mel Brooks and stars Timothy Dalton, Patrick Stewart, Stephen Rea, Jonathan Pryce…and even Twiggy!
No dates have been set in stone, but both discs will arrive sometime in the fall.
In the meantime,...
