Alien Life-Form. Those were the days...
Howlin Wolf7 March 2004
Saturday teatime viewing in the '80's along with stuff like "The A-Team". ALF pretty much reeks of its decade, which is probably why it was cancelled in early 1990. It's by no means the first show to revolve around such a concept; in fact, stylistically I remember it being very similar to "Bigfoot & the Hendersons". Unfathomably though, ALF was somehow more lovable than Bigfoot, enough to spawn merchandise like cuddly toys, amongst other things. Must've been the charm of the show itself, rather than the looks of its furry star! Even as an adult, there are few things more entertaining than a guy in a costume cracking wise. The humour was never vulgar, but often funny, a balance that many shows in this format often fail to strike. Better it had a brief but successful run rather than drag itself out embarrassingly past its sell-by-date. ALF was very much a product of his time, and that perhaps is why I remember him so fondly. It seems like it was produced in the halcyon days of family viewing. They really DON'T make 'em like this anymore...

An excellent show that needs to be remembered more.
sinisterdrecc8828 March 2009
ALF is a classic comedy show from the 80s that I discovered online. I watched an episode, and became an instant fan. All of the actors are good in this show, and Paul Fusco does a great job as the voice of ALF. As great as this show is, it was still canceled in 1990, so in my opinion this show is great, and should be resurrected. It's funny, clever, and original, and deserves more recognition because of this. Now it is one of my favorite live-action shows, and I'd be ecstatic if there were more seasons, because after all, Sesame Street has been on the air for 40 years.

Classic
juanita_canuck22 August 2009
ALF is a classic show, I remember loving watching this show every week when I was a kid with my brother and parents, ALF was such a funny character and also very cuddly!

I recently saw this show again on DVD when my brother gave it to me for Christmas, didn't watch it until over the last month when I had some free time and the jokes were not as funny now as I remember when I was a kid, but obviously this is a show for families and children to enjoy so that's not too surprising, I bet kids today would still love this show. ALF is still an all time classic character.

I'd recommend this for any family, great for kids with some good morals in the episodes.

Great comedy that will be missed
Agent1023 July 2002
While the character has been turned into nothing more than some goofy icon of yesteryear, the show itself was quite unique in the fact that it combined the silliness of the Muppets and the usual kitsch of prime time sitcoms. Funny, eclectic and unusual, this show was a welcome relief from the usual sitcoms that dealt with family and what not. I'm glad this show is still being immortalized thanks to commercials, simply because it was one of those shows I had to fight with parents in order to see. Often times, good fun should take over for raunchiness and this is what made this show so spectacular. While the 80s was a bad fashion decade, sitcoms were a step above the rest after such an incredible decade as the 1970s. ALF just happened to be one of those shows.

Great ! I wish those years back !
vlahov14 August 2006
One of the greatest US products made for TV. I really wish I could travel in time back some years so I can regain the endless joy of viewing the series for the first time. The dialog is full of fresh jokes, no sexual offending or humiliating ones like in Friends for example. It reminds me to the classics like Kermit's show or Jack Lemmon's Some like it hot *my absolute top 1 movie of all time* It is so sad that entertainment like this one is never been created, it is not good for the entertainment industry as a whole. But who knows, maybe we're cursed with the ancient Chinese curse "to live in the interesting times" I give it wholeheartedly 10/10 and highly recommend it for viewing/renting/buying the DVDs. I really do hope DVDs will be shipped to Europe soon.

The Best of the 1980s
ultimateALFsite19 December 2003
As a child of the television (born in '62) I found myself glued to ALF in the mid 1980s. From the sarcastic wit of Paul Fusco, Tom Patchett and a team of

talented writers such as Jerry Stahl, we were entertained by such a great re- used idea. Sure, Mindy had Mork, Bill Bixby had his uncle Martin, and

Spielberg gave us E.T. . . but never was a space creature taken to the heart of a nation. Remember ALF mocking the Ollie North trials in ads for his show? How about ALF doing PSAs for wildlife conservation? . . . don't even get me started on the marketing value of this character. ALF appeared in THOUSANDS of

different items from coloring books to telephones. . .check ebay if you don't believe me! ALF is STILL a phenomenon!

One of my favorites as a kid but parts of it haven't aged well.
Devilsdance9112 August 2010
As a child of the early 80's I distinctly remember watching new episodes of this show every week along with watching reruns after school every day, to me as a seven year old in 1990 this was one of my favorite shows and I was disappointed when it was canceled but looking back at it twenty years later and after watching some episodes on youtube some parts of it have not aged very well.

The family dynamic of the Tanners was always a big part of what made the story's work, no matter what stupid outlandish thing happened either because of Alf or something one of them did or said they still always managed to come back together as a family at the end.

The acting was always really well done and believable especially considering the sheer absurdity of the situation their characters were placed into and the lengths they took to try and hide Alf.

The writing started out fairly strong in the first couple of seasons but once the show became exceedingly popular with kids (around the third season) they started focusing on much more kid friendly stories and the show lost some of it's sharpness in favor of light silly kid friendly humor and sometimes awkward attempts at topical humor and did so at the expense at the expense of any real character development for certain members of the family especially Brian who was growing up (by the end of the series he was 11-12 years old) but was still being written as a cute little boy who spoke with a cute squeaky little voice and said and did cute kid things.

Looking at the series last two seasons now it's more than obvious that by the end the writers were running out of good new ideas and were beginning to recycle old themes and ideas which was am awkward attempt at trying to keep the show off of life support (including that staple of 80's sit-coms that was pulled out when they had no good ideas for an episode: the dreaded clip show)as a result by the series end in 1990 it had truly run it's course despite the to be continued season four finale cliffhanger which was a transparent attempt at keeping the show on the air for another season but ultimately failed and left us wondering just what had happened to Alf until all the questions were sort of answered in the series wrap up 1996 TV movie.

Alf was sort of a Rodney Dangerfield for the little kiddie set and I will admit that as a child the jokes made me laugh almost all the time and to a degree they still do now the problem is that some of the topical humor that was current in the mid to late 80's has been out of fashion for twenty plus years and those jokes kind of fall on their face now even with the context of the times they were written in taken into account.

The other problem is that the character of Alf which was past his prime after the 1996 TV movie that tied up the loose ends that were left after the show was abruptly put out of it's misery in 1990 never truly went away for a while like he should have, he was still appearing in TV commercials all throughout the 90's including selling telephone long distance services chewing gum clothing and other products even as late as 2003 and even got a second shot at fame in 2004 in a talk show format that only lasted a few weeks before being pulled off the air, in essence I was exposed to Alf for most of my life (at least fifteen to twenty years) even after I was too old to like him anymore and actually became annoyed when I saw the character in advertisements.

Perhaps it was overexposure that soured me to the Alf character and his alien smart-alec shtick or perhaps the passage of time has hardened my heart a little but this show will always have a special place in my childhood memories of time spent with friends after school and family on the weekends laughing at his antics on TV.

Although the 2007 "interview" that he did with Bill O'Reily was rather funny just because you could tell that Bill was thinking "what did I do to deserve this?.....Oh right I told my bosses wife that she looked like a tree in that dress she was wearing at that reception a couple of months ago." all while desperately trying to keep from bursting out into laughter at the absurdity of what he was doing by trying to have a serious conversation with a puppet.

In the end I give ALF a six out of ten, and no I don't hate the show in any way, it was always intended to be mindless entertainment for kids which is what it did best back in the 1980's but looking at it today some of the jokes really are dated and don't work while the lack of character development for the human cast really hindered the direction the show took and most likely led to the eventual cancellation of it.

A pure definition of must-see TV!
Catherine_Grace_Zeh22 January 2006
"ALF," in my opinion, is a pure definition of must-see TV! I'm not sure if I've ever seen every episode, I still enjoyed it. One of my favorite episodes is where Lynn's (Andrea Elson) Ferrari gets wrecked. If you want to know how and why that happened, you'd have to have seen it for yourself. Another one of my favorite episodes is where Kate's (Anne Schedeen) broach got stolen. You'd also have to have seen it for yourself if you want to know how and why that happened. Before I wrap this up, I'd like to say that everyone always gave a good performance, the production design was spectacular, the costumes were well-designed, and the writing was always very strong. In conclusion, I hope the Hub Network keeps it on for years to come for fans of the show to see.

Short smart mouthed alien moves in with an All American family.
Keyska200424 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This TV series that lasted for five years was one of my favorites. The average All-American family enjoys(?) the company of a hairy alien. Alf's lines throughout these shows generally will make you laugh. Not to mention roll your eyes now and again.

Alf is played by Paul Fusco, with Max Wright as Willie Tanner and Anne Schedeen as Kate Tanner makeup the majority of the shows programs. The kids are played by Andrea Elson and Benji Gregory as Lyn & Brian tanner.

Chaos is the main ingredient for most of these episodes. Simple humor, quick shows, a canned laughter will make you laugh. Enjoy my fellow earthlings.

ALF rocks.
afzp253 April 2009
I watched it for the first time in the year 2004 when i was 16 yrs old.Surprsingly I find it relevant to the present current era too.The dialog rendering is brilliant.Willie and ALF make a good pair.I don really watch English sitcoms. But became a fan of this once i started watching the first few episodes. And i only realized how i close i became to this show when i came across the DVD couple of years later.

I love to watch this show over and over again.ALF's way of expressing things is extremely good and catchy.Below is one of my favorite ones.

Willie: Stay away from the window, we've got a very nosy neighbor - Mrs. Ochmonek. ALF: Ochmonek? Sounds like a typo

A cross between two earlier shows, "Mork and Mindy" and the lesser known "Small Wonder".
Aaron13752 March 2010
Yes, the funny thing is "Small Wonder" was the lesser known show, but lasted 96 episodes (only 9 episodes less than this one did) and lasted the same amount of seasons. This one by far though started out the hottest, but like so many shows it fizzled late in its life. It did a rather fast fizzle too, as one minute it was one of the most popular shows on television, the next it was gone after a very weak conclusion that was very reminiscent of the ending to "Mork and Mindy" which basically ended on a cliffhanger that would never get resolved. This one sort of tried to resolve the ending by having a television movie years later, but I have never saw that one so I can not comment on how well it wrapped things up. Here you have your alien that lands in a family's garage and then lives and becomes part of the family. All the family learns to really love him, until the end where the mother for some reason goes from accepting Alf to kind of disliking him to an extreme degree. There are a lot of funny episodes to be seen, but then there are more than a few flop episodes too. I loved the one with the alien roach and the one where Alf buys the daughter a car when he is cruising and his hair is blowing in the wind. The family can be described as not very consistent as they act one way one episode and have different values the next. Also, the mother and father were supposedly at Woodstock which raised the question my dad asked "why did every set of parents in these shows attend Woodstock?" Seriously, Woodstock was not attended by the whole world and I would think it would be rare for a mother and father to have attended that function and quite frankly still be together. Alf though is the star and he by far carries the show. There was the typical neighbor in this show who gets nosy and almost catches Alf and then that neighbor had a kid move in with them and he got to meet Alf too. For the most part it was okay, I think a different family would have helped immensely, but this probably explains why this show which is more well known did falter so fast and in the end made only a few more episodes than the lesser known now show "Small Wonder".

just started rerun series on ME TV
uscmd29 May 2017
For some reason I never saw this when it originally aired. I watched the first episode and thought it was kind of funny in a quirky way. It won't let me post. Says I'm too short.

So I'm forced to add a few lines of nonsense, my apologies. To be honest I think this is preferablem compared to my forcing a few lines of nonsense.

Worth trying a few times.

Hey, I grew up watching this show!
Smooth B17 November 1999
If any of you were little kids in the mid-80's (like I was) you enjoyed shows like the Smurfs, Thundercats, He-Man, Alvin & the Chipmunks, and even those old Marvel super hero shows. But that was all on Saturday morning. Where does the 6-year-old spend his TV time during the week? Watching ALF, of course! This show was a Monday night staple at 7 pm (cst). It's about an alien being who crash landed on Earth and spends his time wisecracking on the family that found him. He's got 8 stomachs, and he's not afraid to use them! This show spawned a cartoon series (which I also enjoyed watching). ALF goes right up there with Small Wonder and Charles In Charge as my favorite 80's sitcoms.

Very enjoyable series
Eraser816 March 2003
Most sitcoms nowdays are utterly forgetable. ALF however was such a hit with kids and even adults that the show surprised top tv execs with high ratings.

Alf crashlands onto the Tanner family's garage. His home planet Melmac, had blown up so there was no where for him to go. So naturally the Tanner's let Alf stay in their home and enjoyed years of laughs.

The alien's real name was Gordon Shumway, but everyone just called him Alf for short. The Tanner's must of been good hearted people, as over the 4 year run of the show, Alf blew up the kitchen, destroyed the living room, almost ruined a wedding that was going to be held at the house and etc.

Alf even made an impact in the retail world, selling dolls, books, games, clothes. You name it.

The 1996 tv movie that tried to patch of the series was a bit lackluster.

But Alf is doing great now. He's a pitchman for long distance phonecalls alongside Hulk Hogan and Terry Bradshaw.

Favorite sitcom from the 80s.
emasterslake24 February 2007
I remembered when Alf was really big when I was a toddler, but I was too young to remember anything about the show. It wasn't until 2004, when I reprise watching it off of DVD.

Alf is about an alien crash landed into a garage roof of the Tanner's residence(a family of 4: husband, wife, daughter, and son). They found and were greeted by the alien, He is a short furry,, long nose creature named Gordon Shumway from the planet Melmac. The Tanner family nicknamed him Alf(Alien Life Form) for short. Alf explained that his planet exploded and has no where to stay. The Tanners who were considered in taking Alf straight to the Alien Task Force, but decided to keep Alf as a member of their own family. And soon their life is flipped upside down with an alien being part of their lives.

Throughout the series, Alf gets into trouble, eats a lot, gives out strange behavior, and tries to eat the family cat. We also learn a bit of what he did for a living on Melmac. Including his planet's way of politics, culture, and way of life. The down side is, that since he's an alien he can't go out into public, otherwise, he'll wine up into trouble. So it's important to stay low, and be sure not be noticed.

As Alf experiences Earth's way of living, he already gets into the pop culture and junk food there is to offer.

Alf is no doubt a brilliant sitcom. And something you won't see for another lifetime. It's funny, it's well written, and the use of a puppet and stage performance making it unique of it's kind in sitcoms. And something the whole family can watch, and I know there's nothing at all inappropriate about Alf. Even though it shows it's age, I think it's entitled to be a cult classic in sitcom history.

Those who like the TV series, might consider seeing Project Alf which takes place after the TV show.

An Alien Life Form that's what ALF stands for.
Stebaer427 September 2015
Yes How I recall in The Fall of 1986 when this had first come out and ALF is really initials for Alien life form.Later when I saw ALF Comics and on the cover with Willie in a space ship Alf telling his fellow People It's an Alien Life Form. Also how much my Older Brother J.Kevin liked this and even got an Alf Doll of which was during that same year at Christmastime. Then The following year we'd see a Talking Alf while Kevin's was just a plain stuffed one.He might not have him any more because when he was shortly approaching the age of 32 and shortly after The New year of 1994 that was when he decided it was about time to give up on stuffed animals because as I just said above and as he said in other words he's getting to be 32.He's also the one of whom I'd mentioned before here on this IMDb site the one of whom came up with Ste for me when he Couldn't say Stephen.

Back to "ALF" itself whether or not it was Brian a.k.a."B."as his Dad Willie had addressed him who came up with Alf for him meaning Alien Life Form and to give him an Earthly name too?But we can do our own researches here and online too.

On one episode a Couple from Alf's old world landed on Earth and offered to take him with them but he then turned them down deciding that he'd gotten used to the Tanners and liked them better.

This served as a first clue that like "Gilligan's Island if there was a rescue then there wouldn't be a show. Then later they had a Gilligan's Island themed episode and after I discussed with My Brother Kevin how these are both shows of which if there was a rescue there wouldn't be a show. Then I showed him this episode in the TV Guide of which we had previously discussed this theme and I said to him "Prophetic right?" Then he said "Yes,ridiculous because it's a very ironic comparison."

Truthfully,Stephen "Steve" G. Baer a.k.a."Ste" of Framingham,MA. USA

P.S.

As I've told before here on The IMDb site J.Kevin came up with Ste for me when he couldn't say Stephen and being a Year older than me and of which is why I couldn't be brought up to prefer Stephen.

Wonderful series of my childhood!
marksuatrom9 August 2015
I grew up on this fun and enjoyable show called Alf - Alien Life Form or Alien Life Family. A great idea that can not be interested in his positive outlook on life with this curious point of view ... And be sure to be interested in a positive person who had not seen the show.

This film product is able to love life from other points of its aspects. Opens world outlook and expanding it, and in the positive, fun features! All pleasant viewing! And thanks to everyone who worked on the show, especially the actors: Max Wright (great actor), Andrea Elson, Anne Schedeen and else ... Thank you gave such wonderful emotions. I wish you all good and happiness in life. Thank you all.

P.S. I'm 1986 year of birth ;)

ALF holds up just fine.
ksdilauri22 July 2019
I saw this iconic '80's gem on Amazon Prime, and had to rewatch it.....yet again. Many people love it for its nostalgic value, but unlike many of its contemporaries, "ALF" is still funny. Paul Fusco and Michu Meszaros teamed, via voice and movement, to bring what could have been a fairly tame puppet character to personable, quick-witted life. The humor is fast, cleverly written, and performed by a skilled cast. But the main chemistry is the interplay between The Furry One and Willie, played by the talented Max Wright. They don't just trade scripted wisecracks---check out the nuanced delivery of their dialogue, movements and facial expressions (even ALF's). It's still fresh and funny, over 30 years later, and Willie and ALF should be remembered as one of television's better comic duos. It's a shame NBC ended the series on a cliffhanger, though ABC made a pale TV movie later, attempting to close the story----without the Tanners. (Very lame move.) Fortunately, the series is available, although beware of the Lionsgate DVDs. The episodes therein were cut for syndication, with scenes and dialogue missing.

Weird Creepy Furball
panzerstein15 March 2020
Alf is the polar opposite of everything that was good and fun about E.T. the Extra-Terrestial. Alf was a combination rip-off of E.T. and the Star Wars Ewoks.

Alf is the creepiest and most disturbing TV show I have ever seen. The weirdo furball in the hokey costume is super-inappropriate, and everyone treats this ridiculous thing like it was real. I have always wondered why Mr. Tanner did not go to the local sporting goods store and buy a shotgun to exterminate the vermin. That would have been a funny final episode.

When I was a kid, this was the sit-com to watch.
wishkah719 February 2001
ALF is another one of the favorite shows during my childhood. And I still enjoy it to this day. Every friend and acquaintance of mine loved this show. Some kids I knew back then wished ALF would've crashed into their garage! ALF has left some very fond memories. Short synopsis: One day the Tanner family was in their garage they hear a strange noise and it was a spaceship that eventually crashed into their garage and then discover ALF and he became a part of the family.

ALF was also a bit of a troublemaker and a prankster as well. Yet, he also tried to fix any damage he had done, gave advice to the Tanners, said some funny catchphrases, got into funny situations one can imagine, always had to hide in the kitchen whenever company came, chasing Lucky (the Tanner's cat, ALF had a taste for cats), and used references from historic events and the whatnot. ALF even had some heartfelt moments, too.

Plus, I heard that starting in March, NICK-AT-NITE is going to start showing old reruns of ALF! Another thing, too the kids in this show, Lynn and Brian acted like your everyday average kid and teen! Even though the show barely revolved around them, they weren't even smart-allecks like kids are in sit-coms nowadays. ALF was one of the better sit-coms from the 80's. It's another one of my favorites next to Night Court and Newhart. Feel free to watch the ALF reruns when they come to NICK-AT-NITE. ALF was a show for the whole family. It gets an A!

The Friendliest Alien!
Sylviastel3 September 2014
Alf wasn't the best sitcom of the day but it sure was entertaining at times. Alf stands for alien life form or Alf for short. Alf became a hit sitcom series for the time on the network television. The premise is that Alf crashes into the Tanners garage in suburban Los Anfeles, California. The Tanners are your basic middle class family who adopt and protect Alf like a member of their family. Alf is the star and gets into all sort of trouble. Max Wright is perfectly cast as Will Tanner, the social worker, husband and father, who plays straight man to Alf's comedy. Anne Schedeen is perfect as Kate Tanner, the mother and wife. Liz Sheridan was great as nosy neighbor, Racquel. If you want light hearted family entertainment, Alf is for you.

Original and still funny±
waterman19761 January 2022
I started to watch this (again) in 2021, expecting a trip down to memorylane with a few good laughs and a decent shot of nostalgia, but I had a blast watching this. Yes it's old and the writing of the plots is a bit corny, but the character of ALF is so well written... he's ruthless, manipulating, dominating and everything you don't want in a houseguest, but it's so funny. His relationship with Willie is always good for a laugh, also due to the acting qualities of Max Wright.

I didn't remember how the show ends, so there was my only disappointment, but still: ALF is 4 seasons of good, innocent fun with an alien.
