Back in 1979, director Ridley Scott was mostly unknown outside the realm of commercials, though that would quickly change with his second feature, “Alien.” At the time, those who got to see the movie probably didn’t realize they were watching a movie that would forever change horror and science fiction, as the movie introduced a number of deadly creatures, including the lethal alien of the title that would one day be relabelled, “xenomorph.”
45 years later, 20th Century is re-releasing the sci-fi/horror movie back into theaters for a limited time on April 26, dubbed “Alien Day,” as it will include limited edition posters and other special tie-in collectibles. This may have been prompted by the upcoming August release of filmmaker Fede (“Don’t Breathe”) Alvarez‘s “Alien: Romulus,” giving parent company Disney a doubly good reason to release the original movie back into theaters. It was only a matter of time. When Disney acquired 20th Century Fox a few years back, the comic book rights to Fox franchises like Predator and Alien ended up in the hands of Marvel Comics – and given the fact that Predators and Aliens battled DC Comics heroes like Batman, Superman, and Green Lantern in the days when Dark Horse Comics held the comic book rights, it seemed obvious that Marvel would eventually get to making them face off with their heroes as well. Last year, we got Predator vs. Wolverine, and now Entertainment Weekly has revealed that a limited series called Aliens vs. Avengers is set to start reaching store shelves on July 24th!
Set “a little into the future,” Aliens vs. Avengers has the following synopsis: It’s all led to this: Xenomorphs reach Earth! The perfect organism meets a planet of superhumans. Who will be first to fall?...

Well, it’s finally happening. It was only a matter of time before Disney-owned Marvel characters and the Disney-owned Xenomorphs came together for an epic mashup, and Entertainment Weekly has announced this morning that Aliens vs. Avengers is coming soon!
The upcoming series from Marvel Comics comes courtesy of writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Esad Ribic, and Entertainment Weekly has shared cover art and details today.
Here’s the official synopsis from Marvel Comics…
“It’s all led to this: Xenomorphs reach Earth! The perfect organism meets a planet of superhumans. Who will be first to fall?”
“I’ve never worked on a licensed or ‘non-superhero’ property the entire time I’ve been at Marvel, so when all of this came together almost two years ago, I kind of jumped at the opportunity,” Jonathan Hickman tells EW. “I love the Aliens universe and the mythology, and obviously just how atmospherically...

"In space no one can hear you scream." Don't miss this. 20th Century Studios has confirmed a re-release of the classic original Alien movie in theaters next week. Ridley Scott's Alien from 1979 will be playing again on the big screen starting April 26th - which is 4/26, also known as "Alien Day" because the planet from this original movie (and the Aliens sequel) is known as "Lv-426". This sci-fi all-timer has been showing in theaters multiple times since it first opened some 45 years ago, and still holds up. The theatrical experience watching this is still as exhilarating as ever! Take your friends and go enjoy this classic! Alien stars Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto. This is a re-release from 20th/Disney but it's also a bit of a promotion to get people excited about the upcoming Alien: Romulus standalone movie from Fede Alvarez.

Maid of Sker hardly set the world on fire when it launched back in 2020, but it had its merits and deservedly attracted a cult following of sorts. Which is rather fitting if you think about it, given the title’s folk-horror themes.
As we pointed out in our review, Wales Interactive’s chiller managed to (just about) distinguish itself from all of the other first-person spookathons that were clogging up Steam at the time, thanks to its uniquely British setting and an understated, gothic atmosphere. One that evoked the feeling of a classic 19th -century ghost story.
Fusing together aspects of pan-Celtic folklore and Greek Mythology, its breezy 3-hour campaign was rife with intrigue and gripped us right from the off. Among other things, we were fascinated by the legend of an ethereal siren that somehow washed ashore on the Welsh coastline; the aristocratic family that then exploited this creature...

When it comes to the most iconic leads to grace the silver screen, one can’t leave Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley out of the equation. While the Alien IP has witnessed several installments since its inception in ’79, the first two releases remain the franchise’s peak, often considered some of the most important contributors to the sci-fi landscape.
So it’s unsurprising to see why most hold one of the first two as one of their favorites from the iconic IP, and when Weaver was asked about her favorite one, she was quick to answer.
Aliens is Sigourney Weaver’s Favorite in the Franchise Aliens (1986)
From Ridley Scott delving into the more horror element with the first film, and James Cameron exploring more of its sci-fi aspect with the sequel, both films are considered great in their own right. But While Sigourney Weaver holds massive admiration for Scott, when...

The recipient of numerous accolades including two Golden Globes and a Grammy, Sigourney Weaver is undoubtedly one of the best actresses in Hollywood. She is well-known for her diverse filmography which comprises films like Alien and Working Girl; while the former is a sci-fi horror, the latter is a romantic comedy-drama.
Sigourney Weaver in a still from Alien
Weaver rose to fame with her performance as Ellen Ripley in Ridley Scott’s 1979 smash hit Alien. She reprised her role in the three sequels after the first movie’s success. It is hard to picture any other actress as Ellen in her place. It might be surprising for some that a different award-winning actress was considered for the role once.

Every entertainment buff knows how the one saga perfectly connected to Ridley Scott’s name is the Alien franchise. And that is only understandable, considering how this very film series is still regarded as his best one, even after being originated almost four and a half decades ago, in 1979. That said, the filmmaker has his own favorite movie from the saga too!
Ridley Scott. | Credit: Gage Skidmore, Wikimedia Commons.
But his favorite is a lot different than what many may expect to be. This is because even though Scott’s peer and fellow mastermind James Cameron is credited for creating the best film from this movie series, the filmmaker is still in incredible admiration of his original movie, i.e. the one that started the craze for this sci-fi cult classic.

Following the success of Alien, the acclaimed filmmaker James Cameron proposed a sequel to the studio, which ultimately earned two Oscars and became one of his most acclaimed works. And there is a prevalent story about how he convinced the studio for this sequel.
Aliens (1986)
It has been believed that Cameron pitched the Alien sequel by simply adding an ‘S’ to the film’s title and turning it into a dollar sign. The Oscar-winning filmmaker confirmed the urban legend surrounding the Alien sequel later in an interview, as he shared that the studio didn’t question his vision and proceeded with the sequel.
James Cameron Confirmed the Pitching Story For Alien Sequel
The long-standing tale surrounding James Cameron‘s pitch for Aliens has become an “urban legend” among fans. However, the filmmaker himself has confirmed that it is true and that he did propose the sequel in a manner closely resembling the urban legend.

"Shrek" was a very important movie in animation history. It provided DreamWorks with its first true breakthrough hit, taking in $492 million in 2001. It ensured that Disney would have meaningful competition in the animation space for years to come, which has only been furthered in recent years with the dominance of Illumination in the marketplace. For DreamWorks though, it birthed what would become the studio's flagship franchise, one that has generated more than $3 billion since its inception. That franchise's biggest moment came in 2004 when "Shrek 2" hit theaters.
The animation house founded by former Disney executive Jeffrey Katzenberg hit a home run by pairing Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy as Shrek and Donkey in the first film, in no small part thanks to the stellar supporting cast.

Four months. We’re now just four months away from the return of the Alien franchise with brand new movie Alien: Romulus, wherein director Fede Alvarez will put his own personal stamp on the terrifying sci-fi saga. Disney presented some new footage at CinemaCon last night, though the footage unfortunately isn’t available online.
That being said, we do at least have some footage descriptions from various outlets that were in attendance at CinemaCon. And there’s a common thread in the many descriptions that we’ve been reading. As promised by Alvarez, Alien: Romulus is a practical effects-heavy affair!
Collider’s Steven Weintraub tweets, for starters, “The Alien: Romulus [CinemaCon] scenes are brutal and scary and exactly what I wanted. The practical effects and sets looked great.”
That Hashtag Show’s Hunter Bolding tweets, “Alien: Romulus, from the small amount of footage we were shown, looks like a return to Alien being horrifying.

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and Psycho II.

The creatures in Alien: Romulus have been brought to life with puppets, animatronics and other practical ways according to reports of its preview footage.
The first trailer for Fede Alvarez’s upcoming Alien: Romulus shows how heavily it draws on the imagery of 1979’s Alien, from the design of its ship interiors to its lighting and sound effects. Another aspect it’ll share with Ridley Scott’s classic, seemingly, is a heavy use of practical effects to bring its title monster – in its various forms – to life.
At CinemaCon, the convention for theatre chains which took place over the past few days in Las Vegas, Disney showed off a few minutes of Romulus preview footage to attendees. Among the attendees was Discussing Film, whose description of the footage suggests that Alvarez and his team have indeed used a mixture of puppetry and animatronics for its xenomorph effects.

Last month, 20th Century Studios unveiled a teaser trailer for Alien: Romulus, director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise that is set to reach theatres on August 16th. (You can watch the teaser Here.) With the release date just four months away, Alien: Romulus received some love during the Disney panel at CinemaCon.
An exclusive extended scene from Alien: Romulus was screened a CinemaCon which followed Cailee Spaeny’s character wandering through a broken-down spaceship corridor with Aileen Wu’s character. They see a ripped-apart android among the debris. David Jonsson’s character, who is an android himself, is rebooting with an interesting effect in his eyes, but at that moment, a swarm of face-huggers burst into the room, chasing the characters out. Director Fede Álvarez (2013's "Evil Dead") is looking to revitalize the "Alien" franchise with his new film: "Alien: Romulus." No, "Romulus" isn't hinting at a "Star Trek" crossover, but it does feature rising stars like Cailee Spaeney ("Priscilla") and Isabella Merced (2025's "Superman").
After the mood-setting first trailer for "Alien: Romulus" and some positive buzz (including recruiting the effects team from "Aliens" who built the Xenomorph Queen), /Film's Ryan Scott caught another glimpse of "Romulus" at CinemaCon during the presentation by 20th Century Studios' parent company, Disney.
Set between the events of 1979's "Alien" and 1986's "Aliens," the film features its young stars dodging aliens — from facehuggers to Xenomorphs — on an otherwise empty space station (I wouldn't guess it's "abandoned" since there could be other reasons why there are no humans on board). How will "Romulus" stand out next to the previous film in the franchise, 2017's "Alien: Covenant," or indeed the original film?...

It's been 24 years since Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" brought the glory and gore of ancient Rome to gorgeous life, and now the prolific director has returned to the tale with "Gladiator 2." Set 20-30 years after the events of the first film, "Gladiator 2" will star Paul Mescal as Lucius, the son of Roman Empress Lucilla. Though Maximus (Russell Crowe) died along with Lucius's vicious uncle Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) at the end of "Gladiator," both Lucilla and Lucius survived.
The movie will also star Denzel Washington as an arms dealer who has a stable of gladiators and Joseph Quinn as Emperor Caracalla, along with Pedro Pascal, May Calamawy, Peter Mensah, Matt Lucas, Fred Hechinger, and Derek Jacobi. That's quite a packed cast, although with a reportedly massive budget of more than $300 million, "Gladiator 2" could prove to be a disaster financially while paying off well for movie-goers who want to see some high-end historical fiction.

Cailee Spaeny Talks ‘Civil War,’ Taylor Swift’s ‘Mare of Easttown’ Fandom and Manifesting ‘Matrix 5’
If Civil War star Cailee Spaeny isn’t already on every casting shortlist in town, then her 2024 is about to etch her name in stone.
Coming off of her Golden Globe-nominated performance as Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, the Missouri native returns to the big screen with another critically acclaimed A24 film in Alex Garland’s Civil War. The duo previously collaborated together on Garland’s sci-fi miniseries Devs, and fulfilling a promise he made years ago to write his cast new roles, Spaeny is one of six Devs actors in the British filmmaker’s new action-thriller.
Spaeny plays aspiring war photographer, Jessie Cullen, and after being saved on the streets of New York City by her photojournalist hero, Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst), she maneuvers her way into joining Lee’s road trip to Washington, D.C. Update: Producer and Archivist Robert Harris has reached out to JoBlo to add his take on James Cameron’s 4K releases, saying, “These films have not been restored in any way, nor was restoration needed. There should be no problems with the original elements. The work performed was a re-visualization. An entirely new digital product, which (to varying degrees of success) appears to have achieved Mr. Cameron’s goals. If these were attempts at restoration, they would fail in all regards. All best, Robert Harris.”
Not long after reaching out to us, Harris sent a follow-up email with more comments:
Allow me to chime in again and possibly clarify. Very much akin to Titanic, these films seemingly were restricted during production based upon accessible technology – be it film stock, optics – whatever.

James Cameron’s 1984 sci-fi thriller Terminator introduced the world to the dominance of AI, as Arnold Schwarzenegger’s cybernetic assassin T-1000 went on a mission to hunt down Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor. The movie later became one of his greatest hits during his initial years. Establishing the director as one of Hollywood’s most celebrated voices, Terminator earned a $78.3M gross against its estimated $6.4M budget.

However, looking back at his movie James Cameron doesn’t appear as happy as he should be with its success. During a recent interview with Variety, Cameron admitted that he wouldn’t make a similar Terminator movie today because of the way violence was glorified in the 1984 film. Considering the result of violence and guns in today’s world, the filmmaker claimed to change his views on how weapons are showcased in films.

It's easy to take for granted the strangeness of the creatures from Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi horror film "Alien." Because that film was such a hit, and because it has spawned many sequels, comics, video games, and Halloween costumes in the last 45 years, the Xenomorphs no longer seem weird or even all that creepy. One must cast one's mind back to 1979 to recall that, yes, the aliens were horrifyingly off-putting, bizarre, and terrifying; the title is both a noun and an adjective. By the time the PG-13-rated "Alien vs. Predator" came out in 2004, audiences knew that Xenomorphs forcibly incubated their young inside people's bodies. In 1979, that notion was novel.
To remind audiences: a Xenomorph begins its life inside a three-foot leathery egg. When the egg hatches, a spider-crab monster leaps out and attaches itself to a victim's mouth. Over the course of a few days, it inserts an ovipositor...

In 1979, Ridley Scott unleashed the science fiction classic "Alien" upon audiences and unwittingly kickstarted a lucrative franchise comprised of seven sequels and an assortment of books, comics, and video games. In August 2024, Fede Álvarez plans to release "Alien: Romulus," which will hopefully push the series in a creative new direction, delivering more Xenomorph horror action for audiences to enjoy.
The "Alien" franchise has amassed $1.6 billion at the global box office, despite more than a few bumps. Films such as David Fincher's "Alien 3" and Scott's own "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant" divided audiences with their strange methodology. In contrast, the "Alien vs Predator" films never amounted to more than cynical cash grabs. These sequels/prequels also retconned important lore or added new details to the Xenomorph that do not jibe with previously established material, leaving fans scrambling to make sense of the "Alien" timeline. Some of their theories are perfectly acceptable,...

Earlier today, we shared a quote from The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day writer/director James Cameron where he expressed regret about some of the things he brought to the screen in those movies. Now, we have some positive news to share regarding the Terminator franchise: SuperHeroHype reports that the Terminator comic book license has been acquired by Dynamite Entertainment.
There have been a lot of Terminator comic books published over the decades. Marvel Comics brought us some Terminator 2 comic books back in 1991, with Malibu Comics bringing us some more T2 comics a few years later. Beckett Comics published some Terminator 3 books, Now Comics published some The Terminator books. Dark Horse Comics published a ton of Terminator-related books over the course of several years, including mini-series where the Terminator universe crossed over with the likes of RoboCop, Superman, Aliens, and Predators. James Cameron delivered a masterclass in Paris on Thursday night following a sold-out screening of his 1984 breakout “The Terminator.” With the title so fresh in his mind, the filmmaker spent much of the session sharing stories from the project’s improbable making of.
For one thing, what the production lacked in financial resources it made up for in pre-production time — eight months, to be exact, as the team waited for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s schedule to clear.
“I figured we didn’t have the money for a designer, and I could draw, so what the hell,” Cameron recalled. “I drew everything, and storyboarded the film very, very meticulously.”
The masterclass kicked off a new exhibition at Paris’ Cinematheque Française that positions Cameron as a graphic artist who draws inspiration from his own subconscious. Running until January 2025, “The Art of James Cameron” showcases more then 300 paintings, etchings and production designs pulled from Cameron’s private collection,...

Gallic cinephiles gave James Cameron a hero’s welcome at a Paris masterclass on Thursday, ushering the action auteur onstage with a reception so thunderous that it shook the filmmaker’s oft-unflappable public demeanor.
“That’s the record,” he said in between laughs and in a show of uncommon giddiness. “That’s the record for the longest applause I’ve ever had in my life. Thank you. This is a high point of my career!”

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it.

There’s a persistent theory going around about a potential connection between Alien: Romulus and the original Alien. Potential spoilers ahead…
Nb: The following contains theories about Alien: Romulus that, if correct, could constitutespoilers.
It was revealed several months ago that the story in Fede Álvarez’s upcoming Alien: Romulus would take place between the events of Alien and Aliens. And as we saw in last month’s trailer, the space horror sequel certainly appears to lean more heavily on the Alien side of the equation, at least visually – the industrial, retro-futuristic corridors of its Romulus station are recognisably close to those of the Nostromo, the setting for 1979’s Alien.
There’s one theory doing the rounds, meanwhile, that suggests that Alien: Romulus’s connections to Ridley Scott’s classic could be more than skin-deep. The trailer appears to show that the Romulus orbits the same planetary system seen in Alien,...

James Cameron is often considered as someone who would go beyond his way to ensure he gets his demands fulfilled. Take for example, when the filmmaker had to send out empty threats of making an Ellen Ripley-free version of Aliens, after Sigourney Weaver wasn’t approached by her agent with the offer of returning for a sequel.

No stranger to adapting revered novels, Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss joined forces with writer Alexander Woo for the big-budget sci-fi thriller The 3 Body Problem. Fear of the unknown is always a reliable go-to when it comes to horror. And throwing something even more mysterious like aliens into the mix only adds to it. Admittedly, MicroProse’s classic 1994 PC turn-based strategy game X-com: UFO Defence (or UFO: Enemy Unknown for you fans in the UK) isn’t pure horror, but it definitely did have that psychological terror and that “just one more turn” addictiveness that kept you coming back for more during your playthrough. At the same time, it also held a sense of dread from the very real potential that you could lose it all from an unseen alien threat that was hiding in the shadows (or right behind you). After all, that dread kept the series going for multiple entries, and even led to the series’ rebirth by 2K in 2012.

The use of special effects is quite common in movies nowadays but director Fede Alvarez is making sure everything feels authentic in his 2024 movie, Alien: Romulus. In one of his recent interviews, the director explained that he preferred to create the movie without green screens. The film serves as a standalone interquel set between the events of Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986). Unlike Romulus, Alien and Aliens both relied on CGI.

The film focuses on a group of young space colonizers who come face to face with terrifying otherworldly creatures while exploring a derelict space station. It’s not like Alvarez hates using CGI as he has used special effects in the past in his movies like Evil Dead (2013) and a short film, Panic Attack! (2009).

Consider this a rite of passage for the "Alien" franchise. Any time a new movie is set to debut, the most pressing question on the minds of fans typically manifests around how the Xenomorph design will look this time around. Every movie has brought its own twist on the formula of H.R. Giger's classic original conception, either opting for a more animalistic look (as in "Alien 3") or more like an unholy mash-up prototype (on display in both "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant") that mostly only hints at the well-known creature from the original. But arguably no director added to the lore and made it their own quite like James Cameron did with "Aliens," introducing the concept of the Xenomorph queen and reimagining the species as an insect-like hive.
