JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and Psycho II.

3 Body Problem is the most recent sci-fi show to successfully get a majority of the sci-fi fans in its hold. Created by the showrunners of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, along with writer-cum-producer Alexander Woo, this one is about alien invasion and is adapted from the Chinese novel of the same name by Liu Cixin.

What’s more interesting is the fact that this series almost earned a cameo from none other than the former president of the United States of America, Barack Obama. However, even though he previously admitted that he was a noted fan of the novel, Obama ended up rejecting them, and now the showrunners are getting candid about it.

The Alien series is one of the most famous sci-fi horror franchises in Hollywood’s history. It hasn’t always been that way, though. Upon the release of the first film in 1979, directed by Ridley Scott, the film received mixed reviews from both critics and general audiences. Despite this, the film’s basic pitch of being “Jaws in space” was strong enough to keep generating interest, eventually driving it to become a solid box office success. On a budget of just over $10 million, Alien grossed over $184 million, making it one of the highest-grossing films of that year.

Some iconic horror movie monsters only appear in one film, like the Pale Man and the Queen from Aliens. Jean Jacket from Nope offers a unique take on an extraterrestrial life form that deserves further exploration. The terrifying mutant bear in Annihilation showcases the power of sound design and deserves more screen time.
Movie studios don’t usually let franchise potential go unfulfilled, but some of the scariest horror movie monsters only ever appeared in one film and never got a sequel. Usually, when a movie monster is popular, Hollywood keeps bringing it back for sequel after sequel until it loses all its impact. The first trailer for Alien: Romulus paints Cailee Spaeny's Rain as a protagonist not unlike Sigourney Weaver's Ripley. Fede Alvarez brings a refreshing change by using practical effects in Alien: Romulus for authenticity and immersion. Alvarez reunites the original Alien team for animatronics and puppets, staying true to the series' roots and enhancing realism. Legendary director Ridley Scott approves Alvarez's approach, emphasizing the minimal role of CGI for an immersive cinematic experience.
Director Fede Álvarez is taking a stand against the CGI trend with his upcoming film, Alien: Romulus. In a recent interview with THR, Álvarez shared his commitment to using practical effects for the film's creatures and sets, mirroring the techniques used in the iconic 1986 film Aliens.
The director's passion for practical effects extends beyond just the creatures. "I have this obsession with no green screens, so we built every creature and set," Álvarez said. Alien: Romulus director ensures R-rating, avoiding PG-13 mistake of Alien Vs Predator, per franchise tradition of gory horror. Fede Alvarez's upcoming reboot approved by Ridley Scott for a gritty, disgusting storyline between Alien and Aliens in franchise timeline. Alien: Romulus expected to maintain R-rating like predecessors, staying true to tradition of gruesome gore and adult-oriented horror.
While the rating of Alien: Romulus has not yet been announced, the reboot looks almost certain to avoid one major blunder the franchise made 20 years ago. The Alien franchise has been through many incarnations. The series started life as a claustrophobic space-set slasher when director Ridley Scott’s Alien arrived in 1979. Director James Cameron’s Aliens transformed the franchise into an action-forward adventure, while David Fincher’s Alien 3 brought the series right back to grim, nihilistic horror. 1997’s bizarre Alien: Resurrection saw Jean-Pierre Jeunet add some unexpected, and not entirely welcome, black...

Alien: Romulus will star Cailee Spaeny in the lead role, and she's looking to honor original star Sigourney Weaver with the new movie.
In an interview with Total Film (per GamesRadar), Spaeny commented on coming into the franchise as such a big fan of Alien. She addressed a moment in the trailer that sees her character, Raines, stepping out of an elevator with a Pulse rifle in a moment that's reminiscent of Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley. Spaeny said she could never "be" Weaver, but inspired by the franchise's original star, she gave her all to the role that she plays in Alien: Romulus.

Fear of the unknown is always a reliable go-to when it comes to horror. And throwing something even more mysterious like aliens into the mix only adds to it. Admittedly, MicroProse’s classic 1994 PC turn-based strategy game X-com: UFO Defence (or UFO: Enemy Unknown for you fans in the UK) isn’t pure horror, but it definitely did have that psychological terror and that “just one more turn” addictiveness that kept you coming back for more during your playthrough. At the same time, it also held a sense of dread from the very real potential that you could lose it all from an unseen alien threat that was hiding in the shadows (or right behind you). After all, that dread kept the series going for multiple entries, and even led to the series’ rebirth by 2K in 2012.

Bill Murray's small role in Little Shop of Horrors caused a stir between director Frank Oz and producer David Geffen. Oz's objection wasn't to Murray's casting but to Geffen signing the actor on without consulting him, which the Little Shop of Horrors director and producer had agreed on. Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez is not abandoning Prometheus and Covenant in his new addition to the franchise, honoring their significance. Despite controversies surrounding Prometheus and Covenant, Álvarez's approach to Romulus includes deep connections to the prequels, respecting their place. Alien: Romulus stands as a largely standalone story, with metaphorical ties to previous movies and a focus on a new group facing Xenomorphs.
Although Ridley Scott's Alien prequel story has been sidelined, Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez has confirmed that Prometheus and Covenant are not being completely abandoned in his new addition to the franchise. Since the 1979 original, Alien has undergone multiple lore revisions and developments. Some, such as the arrival of the Queen in Aliens, have enhanced the mythology around the saga's central monster, whereas others have fallen flat. However, while Covenant and Prometheus both made controversial changes to the story, Álvarez has indicated that they won't be ignored in his movie.

Alien: Romulus isn't going to be a CGI-fest.
Speaking about the upcoming film with THR, director Fede Álvarez commented on the movie's special effects. He shared how he'd brought in the same team who developed the Xenomorphs for James Cameron's Aliens to help craft the new creatures for Alien: Romulus. The filmmaker also addressed how spaceships were built and miniatures were used for the sets. That's not to say that there's no VFX in the film at all, but Álvarez suggested that it's only used as sparingly as possible, as the idea is for the audience to never pick up on it, taking them out of the movie.

Alien: Resurrection offers a unique and fun take on the franchise with dark comedy and a comic-book vibe. The film features an unsettling and creative horror element with the uncanny valley creature and compromised Ripley character. The dedicated cast and crew had fun creating the movie, with practical effects giving it an '80s sci-fi feel that has aged well.
The Alien franchise has some incredible entries, but the most underrated film in the series is Alien: Resurrection. Released in 1997, the movie was met with mixed reviews that leaned towards the positive, but was still buried beneath both a historically great year for cinema and the high expectations of fans. Since then, opinion remains mixed on the film and its place in the franchise. Resurrection is certainly odd and at times frustrating, but this movie is an example of what great sci-fi often is: strange, thought-provoking, and challenging to viewers.

The use of special effects is quite common in movies nowadays but director Fede Alvarez is making sure everything feels authentic in his 2024 movie, Alien: Romulus. In one of his recent interviews, the director explained that he preferred to create the movie without green screens. The film serves as a standalone interquel set between the events of Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986). Unlike Romulus, Alien and Aliens both relied on CGI.

Xenomorph label for Alien creatures emerged 7 years after iconic film, largely capitalized on for marketing value. Misnomer "Xenomorph" originated as Lt. Consider this a rite of passage for the "Alien" franchise. Any time a new movie is set to debut, the most pressing question on the minds of fans typically manifests around how the Xenomorph design will look this time around. Every movie has brought its own twist on the formula of H.R. Giger's classic original conception, either opting for a more animalistic look (as in "Alien 3") or more like an unholy mash-up prototype (on display in both "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant") that mostly only hints at the well-known creature from the original. But arguably no director added to the lore and made it their own quite like James Cameron did with "Aliens," introducing the concept of the Xenomorph queen and reimagining the species as an insect-like hive.

Alien: Romulus is a return to the horror tone of the original Alien film, focusing on survival against unknown threats. The teaser trailer hints at a more simplistic and gritty approach, distancing from the complex narrative of Prometheus. By prioritizing character development and vulnerability, Alien: Romulus aims to recapture what made the first Alien movie successful.
In its 60-second teaser trailer, Alien: Romulus showed pretty much everything that went wrong with Ridley Scott's Prometheus. Directed by Fede Álvarez of the Evil Dead and Don't Breathe fame, Alien: Romulus serves as the ninth installment in the Alien franchise (including the crossover movies). While most details surrounding its plot are under the covers, its story will reportedly be set between the events of the first two Alien films, Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986).

Alien: Romulus promises to deliver the sheer horror missing not only from the first Alien film but also in subsequent installments in the series.
Ridley Scott's Alien achieved what few films only attempted in a decade saturated by slasher flicks. The period birthed numerous exceptional horror movies like Carrie and Halloween, but Scott's 1979 film stood out with its horrific premise: combining claustrophobia and astrophobia with a sci-fi slasher set in outer space. The tagline "In space, no one can hear you scream" has since become the catchphrase of the Alien film series, something director Fede Álvarez says he will leverage in Alien: Romulus, the seventh mainline Alien film. In an interview with Variety, the director explains how his movie will double down on horror without comic relief, which he considered the recurring pitfall of prior Alien movies.

Director Fede Álvarez says new and long-time fans of the first two Alien films will be pleasantly surprised by Alien: Romulus.
There's an overwhelming consensus that Alien and Aliens were the best films of the franchise and many consider subsequent installments subpar or even unnecessary. This divide has been evident even in the films where Sigourney Weaver reprised her role as Ellen Ripley; Alien 3 was considered a disappointing culmination of a trilogy, and many considered Alien: Resurrection too ham-fisted to take seriously. In an interview with Variety, director Fede Álvarez explains how Alien: Romulus will attempt to capture the spirit of the first two films while infusing new life into the series. He also revealed that Ridley Scott and James Cameron were heavily involved in developing the latest movie.

There’s Only One Reason You Need to be Super Hyped up for ‘Alien: Romulus’ and it’s Not Ridley Scott
Alien: Romulus dropped its first teaser this week giving viewers a glimpse of the horrors that await them on a space station swarmed with one of the deadliest alien species. The upcoming film is the seventh installment in the Alien franchise (excluding the crossover movies), which began with 1979’s Alien directed by Ridley Scott.

Ridley Scott’s Alien is iconic in many ways. Not only was it a turning point for the action genre, but Sigourney Weaver became one of the first female actresses to classify as a major action hero. It set records straight and opened a new door of opportunities for the franchise itself. In the midst of this, sequels and spin-offs were made. While some were well received, others not so much.
Sigourney Weaver in Alien
The latest installment in the franchise, Alien: Romulus had a lot relying on it. To carry a legacy as big as that of Scott’s and appease the audience at the same time is no small feat. However, its attempt to honor the same may have also become its own bane.

Many children are fascinated by monsters, dinosaurs, and colorful beasts. When it comes to movies, these well-designed creatures are the perfect characters to keep younger viewers engaged. Aliens feature prominently in adult horror and sci-fi movies, but more loveable extraterrestrials are all over children's media.
In addition, kids' movies often have an energetic and positive tone. They clearly distinguish between right and wrong and usually explore social issues children can relate to. Storylines that incorporate aliens make things much more enjoyable and exciting for younger viewers. At the same time, these movies have a wonderful nostalgic quality that adults would also enjoy.

Alien: Romulus is linked to the Alien franchise, and has connections to the franchise from Alien to Alien: Covenant. Director Fede Álvarez crafted the film to provide both new viewers and hardcore fans with a unique experience. The inspiration for Alien: Romulus came from a moment in Aliens.
Following the release of the first trailer for this year’s Alien outing, Alien: Romulus, director Fede Álvarez has revealed how connected to the rest of the franchise the latest installment will be. And it’s perhaps a lot more connected than we originally thought. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Álvarez revealed that, despite previous reports claiming Romulus would be largely “unconnected” to the likes of Alien: Covenant, this is far from the case.

Alien: Romulus brings back the main continuity of the franchise with Ripley still in stasis, 37 years before she wakes up in Aliens. The new crew battles face-huggers and Xenomorphs, while Ripley remains undetectable in deep space aboard the Narcissus. Sigourney Weaver's return as Ripley in Alien: Romulus is unlikely, as her role would only work as an Easter egg due to timeline constraints.
Alien: Romulus is bringing the franchise back to its roots, leaving questions about where the original protagonist, Ellen Ripley, is during the movie. The seventh Alien movie is the first to come after Ridley Scott made prequels to the original film and Sigourney Weaver's time as Ripley. Instead of continuing in that direction, Alien: Romulus is going back to the main continuity and exploring the franchise at a time when Ripley is still very much in the picture. We’ve been learning bits and pieces of information about Alien: Romulus in the wake of the teaser trailer debuting yesterday, with director Fede Alvarez hitting the interview circuit to further preview what’s coming. For starters, the brand new movie isn’t messing with the franchise’s timeline, keeping all previous movies within the canon!
We know that Alien: Romulus takes place between the events of Ridley Scott’s original classic Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens, but where precisely on the timeline does it fall?
Alvarez tells Games Radar, “It takes place 20 years after the first film.”
“Technology in the world of Alien can change vastly, but I think it’s not dependent on time,” he adds. “It’s dependent on place. Where you are. So the characters of this movie and the world are very blue-collar. The technology is still very low-tech and analog. And, look, I...

As one of the best directors working in Hollywood, David Fincher has crafted several riveting and iconic films over the years. His movie career started roughly with his directorial debut Alien 3 — a film plagued by studio interference and even considered terrible by Fincher himself. However, he quickly rebounded with three projects throughout the late 1990s, including cult classics like Se7en, The Game, and Fight Club.
Fans of Fincher tend to give his films high ratings, considering the careful direction the filmmaker puts in each of his productions. As such, most of his movies tend to be iconic examples of their respective genres. With his latest Netflix film The Killer, Fincher continues to show why he is a director to look out for whenever he creates something new in the crime, thriller, action, and drama genres.

Fede Alvarez has talked about his upcoming sci-fi horror sequel, Alien: Romulus, and reveals that James Cameron has seen a cut of the film and “loved it.”
The teaser trailer for this August’s Alien franchise entry Alien: Romulus emerged like a chestburster yesterday, and we’ve already had a bit of a poke around to see what details we can learn from it.
To mark the trailer’s launch, though, writer-director Fede Alvarez talked to The Hollywood Reporter, and talked about how the idea for the sci-fi horror began as a pitch to Ridley Scott (who’s producer on Romulus).
We’ve heard before that Scott, who directed both the original Alien in 1979 and its 21st century prequels Prometheus and Alien Covenant, has been heavily involved in the film. What the interview reveals is that James Cameron was also involved – offering notes and suggestions to Alvarez on its script...

Sci-fi movies of the 1980s are known for their unique style, wacky music, and engaging tales with apocalyptic themes. The 1984 film Dune, although received mixed reviews, became a cult classic with its surreal imagery and ensemble cast. Movies like Aliens, The Terminator, and Blade Runner from the 1980s significantly influenced the sci-fi genre and raised the bar for storytelling and special effects.

Talk about effective trailers. The one-minute teaser for Alien: Romulus captures the terror of being trapped with a creature while not giving away any spoilers.
The teaser arrived along with a poster and new stills from the much-anticipated, long-awaited eighth entry in the Alien franchise. Alien: Romulus is set between 1979’s Alien and 1986’s Aliens, and in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter director Fede Álvarez (Evil Dead) confirmed how it fits into the Alien universe.
“I love all of those movies. I didn’t want to omit or ignore any of them when it comes to connections at a story level, character level, technology level and creature level. There’s always connections from Alien to Alien: Covenant,” said Álvarez says.
The sci-fi film stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), and Aileen Wu.

Alien is returning to the big screen, this time sans Ridley Scott in the director’s chair or Michael Fassbender’s android with a God complex. Shepherding the franchise forward into a new era is Fede Alvarez, the director behind the 2013 remake of Evil Dead and the 2016 slasher Don’t Breathe. As revealed in the first trailer for the film, Alien: Romulus looks like a return to the roots of the series: a space station and its crew, including star Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), run afoul of a swarm of facehuggers and all hell breaks loose.
The situation is very reminiscent of Ripley’s own nightmare on the Nostromo back in the 1979 original, and it’s clear shots of Spaeny’s character Raines armed with a Pulse Rifle are meant to evoke memories of Aliens, too. The teaser trailer for Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus gave no indication about where this particular story takes place in the greater timeline of the franchise, but we do already know that the movie is set sometime between the events of Ridley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens. We know this because Cailee Spaeny revealed that tidbit a few months ago.
But is this a standalone story or can we expect direct connections to the events of those two movies? Alvarez provides some fresh insights in a new chat with IGN this afternoon.
Alvarez explains that while Alien: Romulus will work as a standalone Alien movie for anyone not familiar with the previous films, longtime fans will be getting a richer experience.

With all due respect to any other upcoming movies and shows trying to carve out some time and space for themselves this week, good luck competing with the "Alien: Romulus" teaser that dropped earlier today. Like most "Alien" fans, we've been waiting with bated breath to see what horror filmmaker Fede Álvarez would have up his sleeves for this new installment of the classic franchise, and the footage certainly doesn't disappoint. (We would know since we've been watching it on a constant loop ever since.) Not only does the new film seem like a grand return to the 1979 original, but the newest director to the series is also saying all the right things. And for those of us with a soft spot for Ridley Scott's two divisive prequel movies in recent years, well, these new quotes are sure to be music to our ears.

It's been nearly seven years since Ridley Scott returned to the "Alien" franchise with the ever-divisive "Alien: Covenant." While we may not be getting a sequel to that film, Disney and 20th Century Studios are bringing the Xenomorphs back for another big-screen thrill ride in the form of this summer's "Alien: Romulus." Directed by Fede Alvarez, it looks like a return to the franchise's horror roots with new characters, a new ship, and familiar threats.
Alvarez recently spoke with Variety in honor of the recently released "Alien: Romulus" teaser trailer. The filmmaker was asked what he is bringing to the table for his film, which takes place 20 years after the events of the original 1979 sci-fi/horror classic. Alvarez, much like Ridley Scott and James Cameron before him, has a unique view of this universe. But his main goal? Make "Alien" scary again:

The iconic Pulse Rifle from Aliens & Alien 3 will make a return in Alien: Romulus for combat against Xenomorphs. Filmmaker Fede Álvarez aims for authenticity by bringing back the Pulse Rifles, respecting the original franchise. The inclusion of the Pulse Rifle in Alien: Romulus shows homage to the source material, exciting fans for the new installment.
Alien: Romulus will be the latest installment in the beloved Alien franchise, and its confirmation of one classic weapon appearing in the newest installment already bodes well for its future. Alien: Romulus will be a standalone entry in the Alien franchise, and it will take place between the events of Alien and Aliens. Alien: Romulus' timeline will center around brand-new characters encountering Xenomorphs for the first time, which will offer new perspectives on the iconic franchise. With a new director, cast, and a unique time period, Alien: Romulus has the potential to be better than the Alien Covenant movies.

It’s been seven years since we saw the xenomorph on screen; Ridley Scott’s “Alien: Covenant” was not cutting it for audiences in 2017. But come August 16, the xenomorph (the terminology coined by James Cameron’s “Aliens”) returns in “Alien: Romulus” from horror director Fede Álvarez (“Don’t Breathe”). The first trailer arrived earlier today; apparently, all the “Alien” godfathers love this newest installment. Executive producer Ridley Scott (“Alien,” “Prometheus,” “Alien: Covenant”) watched an early director’s cut of the film and gave it a warm reception last year, saying, “Fede, what can I say?

The Alien saga returns to its extraterrestrial roots with the franchise’s upcoming Alien: Romulus, a standalone installment hitting movie theaters this August.
The latest chapter takes place between the events of the franchise’s first two installments — 1979’s Alien and 1986’s Aliens — and judging by the teaser released Wednesday, writer/director Fede Alvarez brings Romulus back to the more horror-influenced, marooned-in-space vibe of those early Alien movies, with face-hugging xenomorphs aplenty in the brief minute-long preview.
