Sex & Nudity

  • A dying woman's breasts are clearly seen for a brief period of time.
  • In a brief montage of authentic Holocaust footage, a standing emaciated man has his genitals exposed (due to the grainy quality, it is not extremely visible).
  • You can clearly see the outline of a minor girls nipples through her wet dress as she does a dance. Last over a minute.
  • a German soldier strips naked. No nudity.
  • A couple of verbal references.

Violence & Gore

  • A cow is shot. Although there is no blood, the cow dies slowly.
  • A severely burnt man is seen on the ground. He is alive, this is quite graphic.
  • A teen boy accidentally crushes a birds nest, killing all the chicks, which is clearly seen for a moment
  • A severed leg is shown after a man is blown up offscreen.
  • Some sort of domestic pet (a slender loris) is shown being tortured and squeezed to death because it was the pet of a Nazi officer.
  • A severed foot is picked up from a man killed by a land mine. Very bloody and graphic.
  • A caricature of Hitler is made that uses a real human skull as a base.
  • A boy attempts to commit suicide by drowning himself in damp silt.
  • Very graphic war violence throughout; many times children are involved.

Profanity

  • A little boy sings a mischievous song to an older man with the lyrics "use your finger to clean your shit". A group of partisan soldiers also suggest running "shit" on a scarecrow effigy of Adolph Hitler. An elderly man is forced to roll in horse manure.
  • Brief mild insults such as "rat", "pig", "fat", "bastard", etc. Very little swearing.
  • 1 f-word. Very few mild obscenities after that.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A wine bottle is seen dropped from a plane.
  • Nazi officers smoke cigarettes.
  • A man asks for schnapps while invading a peasant's household.
  • Not anything too heavy.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • This film showcases the emotional and psychological cost of war, and does so EXTREMELY EFFECTIVELY. As such, the film is shocking, immeasurably cruel and thoroughly disheartening.
  • A pile of corpses are seen behind a house.
  • The film has plenty of disturbing imagery which may unsettle sensitive viewers.
  • The film portrays in brutal detail the war crimes committed by the Nazi regime in Eastern Europe and the effects they had on the population both physically and mentally. In doing so the film does not hold back as it is often outright devastating and overwhelming to watch, especially toward the end. The film feels real in a way that most films do not and as a result manages to be truly unsettling and horrifying.
  • The sheer amount of inhumanity and cruelty the Nazis commit is difficult to watch, to say the least, and is all shown in excruciating amounts of detail.
  • Numerous graphic animal deaths, including of baby birds, a cow and a pet slender loris. While not as graphic or disturbing as most of the human deaths, these animals are often depicted being killed in brutal ways, including by machine gun, crushing underfoot, and being squeezed to death.
  • Children are hurt by soldiers. (As is said in the violence/gore section)
  • The main character temporarily goes deaf and insane.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

  • A Nazi officer has his pants forcibly pulled down, revealing that he is wearing black SS underwear. It is implied that he may have raped a person off-screen.
  • A young girl is thrown into a truck full of soldiers; her screams imply she is being raped. She later staggers back covered in blood on her inner thighs.

Violence & Gore

  • A group of children are left in a church, German soldiers then burn down the church. Although nothing is seen, it is very shocking.
  • It's heavily implied that a young girl is raped. She is later seen covered in blood.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Around the hour-and-a-half mark, there is a prolonged scene involving a squadron of Nazis burning down and destroying a village of innocent people. All of the villagers are herded into a small church; everybody is screaming and crying as this all happens whilst the Nazi brigade are laughing. Grenades and molotovs are thrown at and inside the church as it is burnt to the ground. This whole sequence is claustrophobic, intense, disturbing, hard to watch, and above all extremely realistic.
  • Some real footage of the Nazi's regime and Holocaust victims is depicted near the conclusion of the film.
  • It is suggested that the main character's mother and twin sisters, both of whom are minor children, have all been killed. This traumatizes the main character.
  • In the ending, there is some extremely disturbing authentic footage of Holocaust victims, showing numerous dead bodies, starving people, and eyeless corpses.
  • A young girl is dragged away by Nazi soldiers, screaming. Later on the protagonist sees her with a bloody mouth and blood between her legs, heavily implying rape.
