- In the initial Ontario theatrical and video release, the throat slitting was censored both in its initial depiction and the flashback. The cuts were waived for the 2005 DVD edition and the classification was reduced from R to 14A.
- Due to the film targeting a "not under 16" rating from the FSK, the German VHS release by CIC Video is cut by 9 seconds in these scenes here: -The shot where Maureen had her wrists cut and starts bleeding was cut. -The scene where Norman Bates stabs Red numerous times is slightly shortened. -The shot where Patsy gets a throat slit and blood starts flowing from her head fall back is missing. -In Norman's flashback of Patsy having her throat slit was further shortened. All these cuts are later waived on DVD and Blu-ray releases with the same "not under 16" rating.
- The television version has a completely different beginning with titles that appear before Maureen is seen. Also, the first thing heard on the television version is not "there is no God". When Maureen leaves the convent, the television version has narration giving information about Maureen. The beginning titles do not appear while she is walking to the highway in this version.
- In the television version, the hooker is not topless but is wearing a towel.
- The TV version features different music cues during the first shot of the Bates Motel and house. It is the same music that appears at the end of the movie when Norman is in the police car being taken away.
