It's the only way to fly!

Warning: Spoilers
This wacky Australian comedy has to be seen to be believed. It's the story of a really dysfunctional family including a senile father sent to a rest home, his much younger wife, their two sons, one of whom is a drag queen, the other a failing business man trying to get money to restart his banana selling business, and how the two sons and a sexy nurse (whose name has probably been used by at least a dozen female impersonators) deal with the father when mother goes away with a neighbor he hates for a Hawaiian and Vegas Vacation, as well other assorted world locations. To keep father happy, they pretend to take him everywhere where their mother supposedly is, putting on shows so you get to see what's going on with mom while dad's thinking that mom is somewhere around. But there are a bunch of obstacles which threaten their scheme including a nosy neighbor and dad's discovery of the truth.

This is 90 minutes of sheer looniness at a frantic pace where you really never know what is going to happen next. The ingeniousness of it all makes the ridiculous plot line a lot easier to handle, and while it does get absurd here and there, and between the new sons and the nurse, they managed to give papa a good time. Every time you see father, sons and nurse they are in a series of wacky outfits (some extraordinarily creative and more than just a few quite eye raising) and that there is no way they could be able to get ahold of so quickly let alone afford them or find the opportunity to change. So you have to put aside any sense of how the heck is this all happening and just enjoy it for the farce that it is as well as put aside certain sensitivities. There's more than just a touch of "Priscilla Queen of the Desert" in this film's plot line and design. We really don't get comedy this frenetic that often, and everybody is working really hard should keep the pace consistently speedy.

Wonderful low-budget farce!

Warning: Spoilers
This is a very funny madcap farce, with dozens of great jokes as brothers Wally (Philip Quast) and Eddy (Kelly Dingwall) go to extreme lengths to save money by dressing-up as countless foreign characters, and creating foreign worlds in their absent neighbour's loungeroom, in order to make their aged father Roly (Allan Penney) think he is travelling around the world to catch up with his wife (who is actually having an awful time overseas).

Amazingly the joke is successfully maintained until the film's surprising and satisfying climax. Providing good support are Gosia Dobrowolska as the scrumptious Nurse Ophelia Cox, Diana Davidson as the missing wife and mother, and Rob Steele as the despicable neighbour.

This film is the spiritual godfather to Stephan Elliot's The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Welcome to Woop Woop.

they all grew younger ...
didi-514 August 2004
This bouncy and silly comedy from Australia has as its basic plot an old man in a nursing home, put there while his younger wife goes on a round-the-world trip. They decide to give him his trip abroad without leaving the house - using inventive settings, props and imitations to give him a taste of Hawaii, Las Vegas, Rome, and Tokyo.

Top billed is the lovely Philip Quast (these days I'm glad to say mainly working on stage in the UK, where he's recently been Emile in South Pacific and Miles Glorioso in A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum), as black sheep son Wally, who really carries this film with his attempts at being an Hawaiian dancer, Elvis, a Vegas cutie, an airline pilot, and a Geisha girl. He's worth the price of renting this movie alone.

Kelly Dingwall plays the horny younger brother, Eddy, lusting after the nurse Ophelia (played with a spark by Gosia Dobrowolska), giving a boost to their flirty attempts to hijack 'the trip'. Allan Penney, as dad Roly, does well in a complex role where he 'sees the light'; while we follow mum Mavis (Diana Davidson) and wig-wearing neighbour Moffatt (Rob Steele) on their real world tour. Guess who has the better time?

YEAAAA!!! I love Australian humor and this is awesome. If your a prude movie goer into films that are artistic and deep.....yeah this isn't it, go away. But if you got a nice nasty fun humor bone watch this. All sorts of antics go on keeping you entertained through out.I recommend this movie highly.....enjoy!

One of the funniest movies ever
Katatonia24 November 2002
If you can find this movie to rent i would highly recommend watching it. It's one of the funniest oddball comedies I've ever seen. The film is Australian which adds an even nuttier element to the movie. Some viewers may not get the bizarre brand of humor at times, but that is the beauty of it.

The characters in the story are all well written and the actors did a truly wonderful job. Especially the old man and "Nurse Ophelia Cox".

The film moves around the world as the title implies...it never becomes dull or boring.

One of those rare gems from down under that hardly anyone has ever heard of. And that is a real shame. Rating: 10 out of 10 , because i just couldn't stop laughing at how funny this movie is!
