Filming begins next week on a big-budget family drama, which producers hope will herald a new era in non-English language shows within the British Isles.
The Guardian reports that four-part thriller An t-Eilean (The Island) is the most expensive drama ever made in Scots Gaelic, coming in at £1million ($1.25m) an episode.
Cast and crew will descend on Amhuinnsuidhe Castle on the island of Harris – a location near Taransay, previously used for reality TV show Castaway in the early 2000s.
Backers include the BBC, which has enjoyed ratings triumphs with previous Welsh-language series Keeping Faith (Un Bore Mercher) and Hinterland (Y Gwyll). The show is co-production between Black Camel Pictures, Mg Alba, the Gaelic broadcasting agency, Screen Scotland and US-owned distributor All3Media.
The Guardian reports that, due to the work of All3Media, the show has already received offers from Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Belgium.

Death’s Game: Seo In-guk Had A “Panic Attack” While Shooting A Mid-Air Scene (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Death’s Game’s star-studded cast has everyone wondering how much the producers splurged to bring the biggest stars of Hallyuwood. The thought-provoking suspense thriller has captured audiences’ attention far and wide since it debuted in its first four episodes on Friday (December 15). With a promising narrative that has kept the audience on the edge of their seats, the K-drama has emerged as a weekend binge for K-fanatics. Ironically, it’s not only the audience whose hearts skipped a beat with bone-chilling action; lead actor Seo In-guk was also taken aback by some of the scenes. The actor has now revealed one particular scene due to which he suffered a panic attack.
The ensemble cast of the Ha Byung-hoon-directed show follows Choi Yi-jae, portrayed by Seo In-guk, whose kindness and brilliance make him stand out amongst the lot.

As 2023 hits its final straights, Spain’s “Nowhere,” a mother-baby survival thriller, rates as the most-viewed non-English title – film or series – of 2023, with 77.9 million views. It also ranks as Netflix’s second most-watched non-English movie of all time, currently punching 141.6 million hours, bettered only by Norway’s “Troll.”
“Nowhere” also has legs: No other non-English Netflix movie has punched 1.6 million views on its seventh week of release.
That achievement is all the more remarkable given that “Nowhere” is also the first title by the film’s producer Miguel Ruz and exec producer Jordi Roca at their new Madrid-based production company Rock & Ruz which they launched after the success of their first film together, Mario Casas-starrer “The Paramedic” (“El Practicante”), also on Netflix.
Made for an above-average budget for Spain, based on an original story by Indiana Lista (“Scandinoir”), “Nowhere” is co-written by producers Ruz and Ernest Riera alongside...

Netflix has dropped a new trailer for the highly-anticipated Castaway Diva, the upcoming Korean rom-com starring Extraordinary Attorney Woo‘s Park Eun-bin. In the trailer (watch below), we’re introduced to Seo Mok-ha (Eun-bin), who is pursuing her dream of becoming a famous pop star after spending 15 years castaway on an uninhabited island. In the teaser we see Mok-ha meet Yoon Ran-joo (Kim Hyo-jin), a former A-list singer whom Mok-ha is a massive fan of. “It has always been my dream to sing on stage with you,” she tells the once-famous pop superstar. A previous teaser released last month focused on Mok-ha surviving on the desolate island. “Today, I saw my future self,” she says in the clip. “As of this moment, my futile 15 years have become meaningful.” Set to premiere on Saturday, October 28, Castaway Diva follows aspiring singer Mok-Ha, who, during middle school, is on her way to Seoul...

Castaway and desert island/planet movies have a strange fascinating quality. We love seeing the protagonist coping with the loss of all the things we give for granted, we cheer her/him while trying for months to grow a potato on Mars, we empathise with her/his bravery facing the hostile environment and we come out the other end with her/him, feeling purified and full of – short lasting – good resolutions. A potent reminder of our littleness when facing nature, they often offer a harsh critique to consumerism and trapping society structures. First solo work by writer-director Lee Hae-joon “Castaway on The Moon” is a different kind of beast as, in addition to all of the above, it is also a genuinely funny and sweet story of human connections and hope.

There are a handful of shows in the history of television that make an impact so large that it shapes TV for decades. Mash, Cheers, Babylon 5, and Buffy are a few that come to mind. But one the most memorable, was a series about people stranded on a desert island no, not Gilligan’s island and no, I am not talking about survivor either. It was of course Lost. This series was not a silly TV show, it was a game-changer. It wasn’t focused on storylines but rather a perfect combination of characters and mysteries. Lost is one of those series that still sparks strong emotions from people. Many people love it or hate it. But is the hate for this show misplaced? Is it really that bad or could Lost be one of the greatest TV shows of all time? Let’s explore the Island in this...

A little over a decade ago, actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint stood on a train platform, with questionable “middle age” makeup applied, and waved goodbye. Their characters were saying goodbye to their onscreen kids, but they were really waving farewell to millions of moviegoers and readers who grew up with their versions of Harry, Hermione, and Ron. In a way, the actors were also bidding adieu to their onscreen characters.
Admittedly a decade is not a super long time (though it’s a lifetime as far as media company CEOs anxious to exploit IP are concerned). Yet in these past 10 years, we’ve watched thespians we once knew as children mature into grown-up working actors, and some of the favorites who played their teachers and mentors go on to win Oscars and greater acclaim. Below are some of the best roles the Harry Potter cast has achieved since graduating from Hogwarts.

The Contestant, making its world premiere on Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival, begins with this text on screen: “At the end of the 20th century, Japanese audiences were confronted with an extraordinary television event.”
The event in question was the 1998 premiere of a reality TV series with an “entertaining” but ultimately cruel premise: Place a game show contestant in an extreme situation and watch what happens. An aspiring comedian nicknamed Nasubi (the Japanese word for eggplant) won an audition to be the centerpiece of the show.
Nasubi in ‘The Contestant’
“The setup was they put him in this apartment with nothing in the room apart from a pile of magazines… and a pile of postcards,” director Clair Titley explains. “They make him take off all his clothes and he has to win everything that he needs to survive through the competitions in the backs of magazines.”

It’s kind of funny now, but there was a time when Walt Disney Animation Studios refused to even make a sequel to their classic works. Millennials of a certain age will of course recall the deluge of straight-to-video sequels released by the Mouse House in the 1990s and early 2000s, but those were never made by Wdas Proper, which for the whole of the 20th century almost always viewed every effort as a single work that should not be revisited.
How times change.
In the 21st century, Wdas has gotten with the program as the Walt Disney Company’s priorities have shifted from creating new characters to curating and maintaining the popularity of existing ones. It’s why we’re right now anticipating Frozen III and Zootopia 2. But that’s still demure when compared to the larger Walt Disney Pictures umbrella, which has been mining the animation vault for...

“If you live in the United States of America, the trust is sacred, unalterable, chiseled into the stone of the foundation of our republic,” he said. “When it comes to our race, there are many models, but only one chassis.

This post contains spoilers for "Mrs. Davis," season 1, episode 5.
It took a few episodes for Peacock's "Mrs. Davis" to loop back around to where it started, but now we're back on the island with Dr. Arthur Schrödinger, and we finally know how his story connects to the quest for the holy grail.
A lot has happened since the "Mrs. Davis" series premiere, when our nun protagonist Simone (Betty Gilpin) came riding in on a horse to thwart the elaborate grifts of Reno magicians. Though he shares the name of a physicist famous for his thought experiment involving a cat, you could be forgiven for almost forgetting Schrödinger. However, for fans of "The Thin Red Line" and other assorted things, the face of Ben Chaplin, the actor playing Schrödinger, may look familiar, even if it's hidden behind a scraggly castaway beard much of the time.
Viewers actually met Schrödinger before Simone,...

Exclusive: Here is the hot project for international buyers for next week’s Cannes Market. Sony Pictures has preemptively acquired U..S rights to Miramax’s Here, a film adaptation of the celebrated Richard McGuire graphic novel that will reunite the Forrest Gump team: Academy Award winners director Robert Zemeckis, screenwriter Eric Roth and star Tom Hanks, with Robin Wright also starring. It’s the quartet’s first time back together since the 1994 film classic, which won six Oscars including Best Picture.
Deadline revealed the package as it was forming in February, before Wright was in the picture. Miramax’s Bill Block stepped up with backing, and then came Sony Pictures Motion Group chairman/CEO Tom Rothman to land U.S. rights. He is planning for a theatrical release in 2023 in time for awards season. Miramax retains international rights and will present the film to international buyers in Cannes.

It’s not too often a costar out-funnies Tom Hanks, but it happened tonight when the actor threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the home opener for MLB’s Cleveland Guardians.
As he was introduced Hanks walked out to the mound carrying what appeared to be Wilson, his volleyball companion in Robert Zemeckis’ Castaway. The actor placed the bloody-faced ball on the mound beside him and started rubbing up the ball, but Wilson had other ideas.
“There goes Wilson,” said one announcer as the ball suddenly rolled about 10 feet to the right of the frame.
“It’s windy today,” replied the other as Hanks gamely jogged over, grabbed the ball and returned it to the mound.
Hanks went into his routine again and, sure enough, Wilson took off, this time rolling about 30 feet right then circling back near Hanks feet as the actor pointed to the spot where he wanted the ball to stop.

Even now, after surviving for more than 100 years and almost as many supposed deaths, the movies are still full of surprises. I submit to you the following as further proof of that phenomenon: At a time when feature-length sci-fi is dominated by franchise spectacle, someone made in which Tom Hanks plays a dying engineer named Finch Weinberg who builds a robot to care for his rescue dog once he’s gone. That isn’t the strange part. No, the strange part is that Finch’s creation — a sentient, Hertzfeldian nine-foot can opener who dubs himself “Jeff” after his AI formatting is interrupted by the superstorm that sends this story on a road trip from St. Louis to San Francisco — is voiced and motion-captured by king weirdo Caleb Landry Jones, an actor who’s always seemed more alien than android. He nevertheless (or directly because of that) delivers a heartfelt and...

Twin screenwriters Aaron and Jordan Kandell have sold an original comedy pitch to Robert Zemeckis’ production company ImageMovers. The project is in early discussions with Apple Studios as a distribution partner, sources said.
Zemeckis will develop and produce the film, titled “Mr. Lucky,” which sources compared to emotional and comedic romps like “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.”
The film, inspired by a true story, is described as a high concept rom-com that explores luck, and how tragedy and triumph, disaster and fortune are all in the way we choose to view them. Jack Rapke and Jackie Levine are producing for ImageMovers.
The Kandells, who just signed with Range Media Partners, are the writers behind the Oscar-nominated Disney pic “Moana” and the 2018 film “Adrift,” starring Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin. They have a number of notable upcoming projects through their banner Twin Ink.

With nominations now announced, voters are curious — and skeptical — about how this year’s Zoomsday scenario will play out. The face-to-face encounters that enlivened awards seasons in the past always produced unexpected heroes or heavies by now, but will virtual sessions resonate as effectively?
Consider the unexpected stars of past seasons: Michel Hazanavicius was neither understandable nor pronounceable in 2011 when he arrived to pitch The Artist, but the French director charmed the town to win Best Picture. In 1997, Hollywood thought Roberto Benigno was a pizza parlor until his lively presence persuaded voters that “life is beautiful.”
An ingratiating and professorial Guillermo del Toro helped voters discover a structure in the inscrutable Shape of Water in 2017. And, surprisingly, the haunting non-presence of Roman Polanski in 1993 stirred voter support and a standing ovation for The Piano.

From the time of Tom Hanks‘s first Best Actor Oscar nomination in 1989 for “Big” to his fifth in 2001 for “Castaway” was just a dozen years. He then had to wait almost two decades before finally reaping his sixth in 2020 for his supporting role in “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” But Hanks could be back at the Oscars again this year for his star turn in the Universal hit “News of the World.”
Hanks made Academy Awards history when he won back-t0-back Oscars for his lead roles in “Philadelphia” (1994) and “Forrest Gump” (1995). That equalled the achievement of Spencer Tracy (“Captains Courageous” and “Boys Town”) in 1938 and 1939. In all Tracy racked up nine Best Actor bids. That streak puts him in third among actors on the all-time Oscars nominations list alongside Paul Newman and Al Pacino, who won for “The Color of Money” (1987) and “Scent of a Woman” (1993) respectively.

Universal Pictures has set the release date for “News of the World” for December 25, officially launching the post-Civil War drama starring Tom Hanks into the Oscar race. (Watch the trailer.) The film reunites Hanks with his “Captain Phillips” director Paul Greengrass and could become the vehicle that brings the two-time Academy Award winner his seventh acting nomination.
Hanks first broke through at the Oscars for playing Josh Baskin in the 1988 film “Big.” The fantasy comedy was directed by Penny Marshall and proved Hanks could be a major box office draw as well as a critical favorite. After losing his first bid to Dustin Hoffman for “Rainman,” Hanks waited five years to return to the Oscars. His portrayal of Andy Beckett in the legal drama “Philadelphia,” opposite Denzel Washington, earned Hanks his first win for Best Actor. The next year Hanks prevailed once more for his iconic role as the title character in “Forrest Gump.

Outwit. Outplay. Outlast. After 40 seasons and 20 years, Survivor has managed to do all three of those when it comes to dominating reality TV, becoming one of the genre's most iconic and successful series of all-time. The CBS reality hit premiered on May 31, 2000, with a simple concept: what if Castaway and Lord of the Flies had a baby that became a reality competition series? The first season, set in Borneo, became one of TV's biggest pop culture phenomenons, thanks in large part to the large personalities, the politicking and one of the most polarizing winners and reality TV stars in Richard Hatch. Since 2000, Survivor has managed to stay at the top of its game, with Jeff Probst going from...

As the world fights a pandemic, we reached out to some of our favorite artists with a few quarantine questions about these unprecedented times. Slipknot’s Clown is currently self-isolating at his home in Iowa as the band promotes their new whiskey, Slipknot No. 9 Iowa Whiskey Reserve, and takes a break from the road. Here’s what he had to say in between cutting brush and building bird feeders.

Mark Duplass is keeping regular office hours while self-quarantining in his Los Angeles home.
“I’ve written a rewrite of a feature film that I have in development. That wasn’t too hefty. That was good. That broke the seal for me that was like, ‘Oh, you’re going to be able to write in this emotionally fragile, strange state,’” he tells Variety. “More importantly for me — I don’t make this a secret — I have dealt a lot with anxiety and depression throughout my life, so this is kind of a dangerous time for somebody like me. I have to be very careful about scheduling myself, and so I’ve made writing a part of my schedule. I get a three or four-hour block every day of it.”

Updated with video: Tom Hanks delivered the goods in accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award at Sunday’s Golden Globes, beginning with a tearful thanks to his family and going on to extol the craft of acting and filmmaking.
Injecting some class and joie-de-vivre into a ceremony that had seemed to mostly drag in its first two hours, Hanks confessed he was less than his usually peppy self due to having a cold “the size of Merv Griffin’s Jeopardy royalties.” He said he had been quaffing some “savagely orange drinks for the past 24 hours,” bringing on jitters during the ceremony.
After tearing up in the opening moments of the speech as he paid tribute to wife Rita Wilson and his five kids, Hanks had the crowd at the Beverly Hilton rapt as he described his attachment to the day-to-day business of entertainment.

If France’s Banijay Group clinches its proposed purchase of Endemol Shine, which could happen within the next few days, the deal would mark peak M&a in the international indie content world. The Mo of both companies is acquiring and aggregating brands and IP, and their union would be the largest ever of its kind on the international scene.
Banijay is the Paris-based company behind “Versailles,” the Ryan Reynolds-produced gameshow “Don’t,” and “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” Endemol Shine, itself the product of a previous merger, is the well-known purveyor of “Big Brother,” “Masterchef” and “Peaky Blinders.” A combined Banijay-Endemol Shine would take consolidation to another level, creating a super-indie that would boast content businesses throughout Europe and a presence in Asia Pacific, Australasia, and the U.S.

A perhaps necessary reminder in the wake of “The Shape of Water” that sea creatures, as a rule, should probably not be looked at as romantic partners, “Sweetheart” complicates — and elevates — a survival story by pitting a desperate young woman against a primordial beast determined to make her its dinner.
Director and co-writer J.D. Dillard (“Sleight”) delivers a smart, streamlined thriller that skillfully integrates a careful whisper of social commentary into a story that also unfolds masterfully as a straightforward genre workout.
Kiersey Clemons (“Hearts Beat Loud”) plays Jenn, a young coed who washes up on the beach of a tiny, idyllic island alongside another ailing passenger from the boat she, her boyfriend Lucas (Emory Cohen), and a group of college kids took out for vacation. While she’s exploring the island for food, supplies and other survivors, her companion dies, and she buries his body in the sand on...

Sony recently hosted a SAG-AFTRA screening of “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” the Marielle Heller-directed drama starring Matthew Rhys as a magazine writer who befriends Fred Rogers, played by Tom Hanks.
While the screening didn’t include a guild Q&a with cast or the film’s creative team, the audience was greeted with a video message from Mister Rogers’ widow, Joanne. “The film is a wonderful tribute to Fred’s life. But more than that it’s incredibly timely. With so much conflict going on in the world, I think people are hungry for kindness,” she said. “Fred’s legacy reminds us to be kind and to be neighborly, to try and forgive those who have hurt us and to see the innate goodness in all people.”
The theater, a full house of about 200 people, was immediately filled with “awws” and “aahs.”

When it comes to “Big Brother,” Peter Salmon has skin in the game as the chief creative officer of Endemol Shine, which makes and sells the format. But back when it hit British screens, in 2000, he was at the BBC, and the show aired on rival pubcaster Channel 4. It quickly overshadowed the Beeb’s own attempt at TV-meets-social-experiment, “Castaway,” an altogether more sober show.
“We saw ‘Big Brother’ and it just did it properly and was the human experiment we imagined we might have done ourselves. And like everyone else, we were transfixed,” Salmon says. “The fact you could watch it unfold it in front of your eyes was and is an abiding principle. I remember it well. Everything changed at that point.”
Produced by John de Mol’s Endemol (years before the company aligned with Shine), the show started out in the Netherlands in 1999, on Rtl’s Veronica channel.

A kinder, gentler true-life fable, the Mr. Rogers-inspired “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival over the weekend and critics in attendance mostly fell under its enchanting empathetic spell.
Directed by Marielle Heller (“Can You Ever Forgive Me”) and starring Tom Hanks as the beloved children’s TV host, the film is based on a true story, pairing him with Matthew Rhys as a sullen and bitter “Esquire” writer who is tasked with doing a profile of this upbeat icon and his sunny outlook on life. The movie itself is somewhat predictable but most credit goes the two stars for elevating the material.
Critic Eric Kohn of IndieWire warns that this is one of those films whose effect sneaks up on you without resorting to cheap, maudlin devices: “Marielle Heller … excels at pulling heartstrings from sturdy foundations, injecting smart and insightful details into material...

Being the only person on screen for an entire movie (or a large majority of the entire movie) did wonders for the likes of Robert Redford (“All Is Lost”), Blake Lively (“The Shallow”), Sandra Bullock (“Gravity”), Tom Hanks (“Castaway”), and Tom Hardy (“Locke”), and now Mads Mikkelsen joins the club with the upcoming survival thriller “Arctic.” The movie marks the feature directorial debut of Joe Penna, who shares screenwriting credit with Ryan Morrison.

Nicolas Roeg, the supremely talented British cinematographer who ultimately became an acclaimed director, has died at age 90. Roeg's unique eye for filming scenes in a creative manner gained him a reputation in the movie industry in the 1960s. He was a second-unit photographer on David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia" and contributed to Lean's "Doctor Zhivago". By 1964, he was credited as Director of Photography on Roger Corman's "The Masque of the Red Death", one of the most stylishly filmed Corman horror productions. Soon, he found himself constantly in demand. Other films he photographed included "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum", "Far from the Madding Crowd" and "Petulia". He also contributed to the 1967 spoof version of "Casino Royale".

Director and noted cinematographer Nicolas Roeg, whose offbeat films included “Performance,” “Don’t Look Now,” “The Witches” and “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” has died. He was 90.
His son Nicolas Roeg Jr. told the BBC his father died Friday night.
A daring and influential craftsman, Roeg’s idiosyncratic films influenced filmmakers including Danny Boyle and Steven Soderbergh.
He worked his way up from the bottom of the business and by the 1960s was much in demand as a cinematographer, responsible for the lensing of films including “Petulia,” “Far From the Madding Crowd” and “Fahrenheit 451.”
The controversial, oddly compelling Mick Jagger-starring “Performance,” which Roeg co-directed with Donald Cammell, was almost not released and then was recut by Warner Bros.; execs at the studio found it incomprehensible as a gangster thriller. It was eventually recut, released in 1970 to modest business and decades later received widespread acclaim as a classic of British cinema.

Netflix post-apocalyptic film, I Am Mother, stars Hilary Swank, Clara Rugaard and a creepy maternal robot voiced by Rose Byrne.
A while ago, we first heard that Oscar winner Hilary Swank was teaming up with first time director Grant Sputore for a new sci-fi/horror film called I Am Mother. We were curious, because Swank's previous forays into the horror genre weren't exactly...good, for the most part. The Gift was solid enough with Sam Raimi at the helm, and The Reaping and The Resident both initially looked promising, but didn't ultimately make the grade, so it was interesting to us that the actress had chosen to dip her toe back into the scream queen water some years later, especially with an unproven director at the helm. Yet, when the film became bound for Netflix direct distribution, the logic became a bit clearer.

Serbian producer Milos Antic said he has acquired the film rights to legendary director Sam Peckinpah’s unproduced screenplay Castaway (which is a working title), which is based on James Gould Cozzen’s 1934 novella of the same name. The deal was done with the Peckinpah Estate; Antic will be producing alongside Los Angeles-based producers Katy Haber and Benni Korzen.
Antic and Haber both worked with Peckinpah on his only war film Cross of Iron in 1976 in Portoroz, Slovenia (the former-Yugoslavia). On that shoot, Antic said that Peckinpah wanted to direct Castaway, and Antic told him if the film could be shot in Yugoslavia, he would want to help finance the film based on the novella that Peckinpah had acquired rights to in 1960.
Castaway is the story of Mr Lecky, “an every-man who survives an unnamed catastrophe by hiding in a department store that has escaped destruction. While he is surrounded...
