And just like that – here comes spring. Amazon Prime‘s list of new releases for April 2021 isn’t as cheery as one would expect from the sunny season. But perhaps that’s by design – you should be outside anyway!
Amazon’s most prominent original series for April 2021 is undoubtedly Them from multi-hyphenate Lena Waithe. This horror anthology’s first season, subtitled “Covenant”, will center on a Black family in the 1950s who move from North Carolina to a white neighborhood in Los Angeles. It premieres on April 9. Given its name and premise, Them is drawing some (largely joke-y) comparisons to Jordan Peele’s Us on social media. But hey, the world could always use some more Us.

While the first day of spring technically belongs to March, everyone knows that it kicks into high gear in April. To celebrate the changing of the seasons, Hulu is finally bringing back its signature original series for April 2021.
Season 4 of the multiple Emmy award-winning The Handmaid’s Tale premieres on April 28. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen June and her dystopian world. In fact, it’s been so long that our own world decided to endure its own dystopian pandemic in the meantime. Hopefully this series’ return will mean we can keep our political and social collapses on television where they belong.
Aside from The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu isn’t brining much else to the table in terms of originals this month. Thankfully, the one other original that Hulu has in store for April sounds completely righteous. Sasquatch, the latest docuseries from the Duplass brothers producing team, will cover exactly what the title promises.

Scream Factory has released Bad Moon to Blu-ray, and they’ve included both the theatrical cut, as well as the rarer director’s cut. I don’t want to oversell it, this isn’t Nightbreed, the director’s cut of Bad Moon actually clocks in at a few seconds less than the theatrical. That I can tell, the only difference throughout the entire film is that transformation scene, which really makes little difference. I know several people who consider this to be one of their favorite horror films, but other than that, it’s rarely one I see mentioned. The werewolf genre is criminally unappreciated in the first place, and a lot of the really good ones are just obscure enough that they never really capture the attention of the mainstream. Bad Moon is a solid werewolf movies. And Scream Factory has released the most complete version to date.

July 19th Blu-ray & DVD Releases Include The Return Of The Living Dead Collector’s Edition, Bad Moon
Tuesday, July 19th doesn’t boast a ton of new home entertainment choices for genre fans, but as the saying goes, sometimes it’s quality over quantity, and there are a few releases to be more than excited for. Scream Factory has put together a stellar Collector’s Edition release of The Return of the Living Dead and is also bringing Bad Moon home in HD as well.
Mill Creek has two William Castle double features arriving on Blu-ray this week, and Warner Home Video is giving Watchmen the 4K Ultra HD treatment with their new release of The Ultimate Cut, which I know a lot of fans have been looking forward to for a while now.
Other notable titles coming home on July 19th include Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (with four separate format releases) and a special edition release of Ken Russell’s Crimes of Passion.

A family member has a ferocious (and furry) secret in Eric Red’s Bad Moon, making its Blu-ray debut on July 19th from Scream Factory, and we have high-def clips and a trailer teasing what to expect on the new home media release of the 1996 werewolf film.

By night, he transfigures into a horrific half-human – a werewolf. Dead men tell no tales, so Ted’s sure he alone knows about his vile double life. The secret, however, may be out. The family dog Thor, devoted to defending the household, has his suspicions.
Writer/director Eric Red (Cohen and Tate, Body Parts) delivers a new infusion of thrills with this red blooded shocker. Michael Paré (Streets of Fire) portrays Ted, hiding his accursed condition from his sister (Mariel Hemmingway,...

A British hitman movie, starring Tim Roth, owes a debt to a little-known 1980s Us noir thriller, superbly crafted by Eric Red, which deserves to be better known
Twenty years ago, when I first started reading credits of movies I loved to see who'd written the screenplay, one name leapt out at me: Eric Red. In the space of three years in the late 1980s he wrote the terrifying Rutger Hauer road movie The Hitcher and two brilliant genre movies for a young director called Kathryn Bigelow: the trailer-trash vampire movie Near Dark, and Blue Steel, a feminist cop movie with Jamie Lee Curtis as a rookie up against an amorous serial killer. The first two of those have gone on to become bona fide cult classics. But Red remains little known – as does the film of his I really loved, one he wrote and directed in 1988, Cohen and Tate.

Decades before Bella and Edward went all gooey-eyed for each other Eric Red crafted an extraordinary tale of two young bloodthirsty lovers (and their ragtag, nomadic ‘family’) who make Stephenie Meyer’s teenage duo look positively anaemic by comparison, in the form of the genre-defying 80’s horror classic Near Dark.
Red was also the scriptwriter behind the equally admired serial killer yarn, The Hitcher, as well as directing a number of cult favourites from that era, including Cohen and Tate and Body Parts. He has now added novelist to his already impressive resume with the dark coming-of-age thriller Don’t Stand So Close.
HeyUGuys recently had the opportunity to chat to him about his debut novel, some of his past features and the current state of vampires in pop culture.

1996's Bad Moon was the last film helmed by cult genre filmmaker Eric Red (director of Body Parts and Cohen and Tate, screenwriter of Near Dark and The Hitcher) before most had heard about the strange and tragic troubles he encountered earlier this decade. Premiering last year on the SyFy channel, 100 Feet marks Red's return to the screen: "Her Husband's Dead, and He's Taking the News Badly" reads the irresistible tagline of Eric Red's first film in 12 years, in which abused wife Marnie (Famke Janssen) learns that stabbing her sadistic spouse three times is not enough to keep him away. After serving some time for murder, she's placed under house arrest in her spacious Brooklyn brownstone, fitted with an electronic anklet, and is soon haunted by hubby's vengeful spirit (a creepy Michael Paré, looking more like Michael Myers). Hand-wringingly tense, 100 Feet provides the chills expected from the writer of...
