The Karate Kid franchise has maintained its legacy over the years, and the original film is a cult classic among fans. The success of the first film led to three sequels The Karate Kid Part II, The Karate Kid Part III, and The Next Karate Kid. While the sequels did not receive as well as the original, the 2020 remake of the original starring Jackie Chan was loved by fans.

The months-long Hollywood writers’ strike appears to have come to an end. The WGA and AMPTP have apparently reached a tentative agreement allowing film and television writers to get back to work. That’s good news for people working in the industry, as well as for fans, who are now one step closer to getting new episodes of their favorite shows. That includes Netflix’s Cobra Kai, which is set to return for a sixth and final season. But when will new episodes drop? Here’s what we know about the Cobra Kai Season 6 release date.

Up until now, the Karate Kid franchise has lived on solely through the "Cobra Kai" TV series, but in 2024, it's set to return to the big screen with a brand-new movie. The untitled project will mark the sixth installment in the franchise and will release exactly 40 years after the first Karate Kid film premiered in 1984. The original movie starred Ralph Macchio as a teenager named Daniel Larusso, who learns karate from martial arts master Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) in order to defend himself against a group of bullies, one of whom includes Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). Since their rivalry is also at the center of "Cobra Kai," we're left to wonder whether the new film will bring the iconic pair back once more.
In September 2022, Macchio told Entertainment Weekly that he wasn't attached to the project, however, since the movie was still in its early stages, anything could happen. "I...

Knowing that Cobra Kai Season 6 will be the final season is a little bit sad. Cobra Kai gave Karate Kid fans so much joy and introduced a whole new generation of karate kids. At least ending the show now means the inevitable legacy revival will happen even sooner. The final season of Cobra Kai is sure to end with a bang. Here are seven burning questions we hope the Cobra Kai final season answers.

The Cobra Kai karate dojo is coming to a close. Netflix's much-loved "The Karate Kid" sequel series is set to end with its upcoming sixth season, according to a statement shared by co-creator Hayden Schlossberg on Twitter. "The upcoming Season Six will mark the conclusion of 'Cobra Kai,'" Schlossberg and co-creators Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz wrote.
While viewers will no doubt be sad to see the decades-long story of Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) come to an end, it sounds like this conclusion has been in the works for a while. In the statement, the co-creators wrote:
Our day one goal with 'Cobra Kai' has always been to end it on our terms, leaving the Valley in the time and place we've always imagined. So it is with immense pride and thankfulness that we are able to announce that achievement.

The Karate Kid has to be one of the most unexpectedly massive franchises of all time. In 1984, John G. Avildsen’s The Karate Kid was a modestly budgeted underdog story (in the Rocky mode) featuring two unknown leads, Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. At the time, Macchio was mainly known for playing the doomed Johnny in The Outsiders, while Morita was known as the wacky Arnold from Happy Days. The 8 million movie would gross 100 million in 1984, and the sequel, The Karate Kid – Part II – would make even more, grossing 115 million and giving us the Peter Cetera classic (to some) “The Glory of Love.”
The franchise would die, for a while, when The Karate Kid – Part III flopped with a measly 38 million gross, while The Next Karate Kid would fare even worse. For the longest time, it looked like the franchise was dead, especially when Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan...

For some actors, one series of movies can go on to define their entire career. For Daniel Radcliffe, it's the "Harry Potter" franchise. For Michael J. Fox, it's the "Back to the Future" franchise. For Ralph Macchio, it also could have been the "Back to the Future" franchise, but he was deemed "too east coast" for the role. Luckily for Macchio, he already had a career-defining franchise in hand with the "Karate Kid" films. The story of a kid from Brooklyn being taught karate by his wise building maintenance man spawned two sequels, multiple spin-offs, and a hit Netflix series. For Macchio, that's practically a lifetime of work just from one franchise.
But Macchio didn't know immediately that the script he received about a kid doing karate would become his life's work. According to a recent interview on the "Happy, Sad, Confused" podcast, when Macchio first got a call about the film,...

"Cobra Kai" shocked everyone with its unbelievable return to "The Karate Kid" universe. The show, which was created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, is essentially one giant love letter to the original films. Not only is it smart, original, and funny, but it's also done an incredible job of tying in many of the characters from the first three films. (This particular writer is also desperate to see Hilary Swank reprise her role as Julie Pierce from "The Next Karate Kid.") Season 2 saw the epic and heartfelt return of Johnny Lawrence's (William Zabka) original Cobra Kai pals, Tommy (Rob Garrison), Bobby (Ron Thomas), and Jimmy (Tony O'Dell). Elisabeth Shue reprised her role as Ali Mills, and both Martin Cove and Thomas Ian Griffith have returned to the franchise as the show's formidable villains, John Kreese and Terry Silver, respectively.

New Karate Kid movie: Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz confirms he is not involved in Sony’s spinoff
Update:
Netflix series creator co-creator Jon Hurwitz has confirmed he is not involved in the making of Sony’s new Karate Kid movie.

Neither Sony nor Hurwitz has elaborated on the new Karate Kid movie since the update. Still, it’s nice to have a confirmation from Hurwitz early in the project’s announcement. Clearing up this bit of business keeps Cobra Kai fans (like myself) from speculating about Sony’s plans for the new movie, at least as far as Cobra Kai is concerned. What will the plot of the new Karate Kid movie turn out to be?...

When it comes right down to it, Cobra Kai is about bullies. If Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) had never bullied Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) way back in the first film, The Karate Kid, Daniel probably wouldn’t have pursued Karate. And if Sensei Kreese (Martin Kove) had not bullied Johnny, he probably wouldn’t have swept the leg.
But with all of this bullying in the Miyagi-verse, who is the worst offender? Let’s find out!

Cobra Kai has expanded the backstories of many of these bullies and has somewhat redeemed them. They’ve progressed from cardboard cutouts into complex characters with relatable motivations. Case and point: Johnny Lawrence.

In other words, there’s opportunity for more should Netflix renew the series for a sixth season.

Major spoilers for "Cobra Kai" season 5 follow.
Just in time for back-to-school season, the doors of the "Cobra Kai" dojo are open once again. Netflix's teen karate sensation returns to the streaming giant with an epic season 5 that could easily serve as the show's overall conclusion. After a devastating loss at the All-Valley Tournament, Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) have shuttered their dojos and are prepared to leave karate behind. With John Kreese (Martin Kove) in jail for assault, Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) is now in charge of Cobra Kai, and he's started to expand his empire throughout the San Fernando Valley.
Knowing first-hand how dangerous Terry can be, Daniel enlists an unlikely partner to protect his family from Silver. Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) travels all the way from Okinawa to come to Daniel's aid, and the former enemies conspire to bring down the ponytailed...

This Cobra Kai article contains spoilers for season 5.
When it comes to the original Karate Kid films, The Karate Kid Part III is unquestionably the worst installment of the trilogy. Part I launched the franchise. Part II took it to Okinawa. Part III nearly killed it. Even Daniel-san himself, Ralph Macchio, rejected the film.
“I was not a fan of how the Karate Kid III came out,” Macchio said to The Hollywood Reporter last January. “I felt the story was only repeating itself and was not character forwarding for the end of Larusso.”
Macchio went on to say it wasn’t a smooth ride for him and that there were parts of the character he didn’t embrace. “I don’t put it on the top of my résumé.”
Is Macchio (and mostly everyone else’s) estimation of Karate Kid III a fair one? And if so, is there any...

Mr. Miyagi is one of cinema's most memorable mentors. Played by the inimitable Pat Morita, Miyagi is known for his nontraditional approach to teaching karate and for doling out wise life advice when it's needed most. He is the heart of "The Karate Kid" franchise, and Morita, who passed away in 2005, has inspired many of us with his portrayal of everyone's favorite sensei. With the announcement of the spin-off show "Cobra Kai," fans of the original series wondered how Miyagi's influence (and absence) would tie into the new story. Thankfully, the show's creators share a deep love and respect for this crucial character, and they have gone to great lengths to insure that Miyagi's influence and spirit is still felt throughout all five seasons of "Cobra Kai."

Major spoilers ahead for "Cobra Kai" season 5.
Since Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) first appeared in "Cobra Kai," he's been a thorn in Daniel Larusso's (Ralph Macchio) side. We first met the character back in the 1989 film "The Karate Kid Part III," where we learned that he helped John Kreese (Martin Kove) start the Cobra Kai dojo. They had been old buddies back in the Vietnam War, and Silver — a very wealthy dumper of toxic waste — tries to help Kreese get the dojo up and running after Daniel and Mr. Miyagi (the late Noriyuki "Pat" Morita) humiliated them at the All-Valley tournament.
He poses as a friend, manipulates Daniel's training and relationships, and leads him down the path to anger. In "Cobra Kai," he uses every ruthless method he can to ruin Daniel and Johnny (William Zabka) and their dojos. In season 5, he finally gets his comeuppance. It's the first...

Ever since letter-writing campaigns got the original "Star Trek" a third season, science fiction fans have beat the drum for their favorite shows that got prematurely canceled. Sometimes it works: "Jericho" got a second season thanks to fans mailing bags of nuts to the studio. Other times it doesn't: "Firefly" fans managed to get a movie, but never the revived series they wanted. Honestly, that's probably for the best given what we now know about Joss Whedon and Adam Baldwin.
While we don't hold out a lot of actual hope for the shows below to come back, this article highlights sci-fi series from the last several decades that should have run longer, either because they ended poorly/awkwardly or just because they were way too short. Where possible, because we're nothing if not constructive, suggestions are included as to how a continuation today might go. Here are 12 canceled sci-fi shows that deserve a second chance.

Spoilers for "Cobra Kai" season 5.
In the Netflix series "Cobra Kai," Thomas Ian Griffith plays the villain Terry Silver, a role he originated in "The Karate Kid Part III." That film is usually considered very low in the rankings of "Karate Kid" entries. While that may be true, Silver in his current form is a baddie we love to hate.
Terry Silver was a Vietnam War buddy of John Kreese (Martin Kove). The martial artist helped Kreese create the Cobra Kai dojo, but he was also a wealthy businessman whose job it was to dump toxic waste in the third film. His company was called Dynatox, if that helps you get a sense of the level of camp we're dealing with here. Silver did business from his hot tub and faked his way into Daniel Larusso's (Ralph Macchio) life. He pretended to be a sensei, but was really working for Kreese the entire time.

Mild spoilers for "Cobra Kai" season 5 ahead.
The Netflix series "Cobra Kai" is showing no mercy to those of us who love the "Karate Kid" franchise. Not only have we been able to catch up with Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) from 1984's "The Karate Kid," but we've got cameos galore from the subsequent offerings. Cobra Kai sensei Kreese (Martin Kove) is back, along with Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) and Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita) from the second film, Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) and Mike Barnes (Sean Kanan) from the third, and a few more we won't spoil here.
It's a nostalgia bomb in all the best ways, and it's made a lot of us do a film marathon, if only to make sure we recognize all the "Cobra Kai" cameos before they show us flashbacks.

This Cobra Kai article contains no spoilers for season 5.
One of the many elements that makes Cobra Kai work is its sense of poetic parallelism. Some might simplify this to well laid Easter eggs, but it’s an aesthetic device akin to literary symmetry, layered screenwriting that elegantly fuses storytelling and homage.
For example, in The Karate Kid Part III, Sensei Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) sent Sensei John Kreese (Martin Kove) away to Tahiti where he got bodywork from shadowy Tahitian gals. In the Cobra Kai season 4 finale, Silver sends Kreese away once again, but this time, to the slammer where he gets a different kind of bodywork from his fellow inmates.
That finale left fans gobsmacked with Silver’s betrayal of Kreese. After exhibiting dubious motivations throughout season four, the real Silver is revealed in all his manipulative glory. Kreese appeared to be pulling the strings, guilt tripping...

Daniel Larusso is no stranger to romance. In "The Karate Kid," his crush on Johnny Lawrence's (William Zabka) girlfriend Ali Mills (Elizabeth Shue) is what gets him into trouble in the first place. Determined to win her heart and give Johnny a beating in the process (Johnny sympathizer over here!), Daniel sets out to master the art of karate, which is a pretty crazy and impressive thing to do for love. Because this is Hollywood, he ends up getting the girl and the first place trophy, but by "The Karate Kid Part II," he and Ali have parted ways.
Clearly not too heartbroken over the breakup, Daniel embarks on a journey to Okinawa with Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) where he meets Yukie, Miyagi's former crush, and her charming niece Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita). He then spends the rest of the film trying to win over Kumiko's heart with his sick karate moves and American charm.

In its fifth season, "Cobra Kai" gets both its "Empire Strikes Back" moment and its "Avengers: Endgame" moment, as the legacy sequel reaches its finest moment. The show also throws any resemblance to the real world out of the window and goes full sports anime. This means the show has its own ridiculous set of rules and laws that may not make sense in our world, but if you're willing to accept that in this version of the San Fernando Valley the only law is karate, then you might find this season utterly delightful. Add some career-best performances by some of the cast members, one incredible cartoon villain, and thrilling stunts, and you've got a season that is the best, around.

Ask any "Karate Kid" fan for a ranking of all the films in the franchise and one thing you'll almost always hear is how bad "The Karate Kid Part III" is. The first film introduced us to the relationship between Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita) and Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and got a ton of people into martial arts. The second film was a lovely tale of redemption and forgiveness set in Okinawa. The third? Well, there was karate, but it seemed like all the lessons from the first two films were undone, and logic was non-existent.
Daniel forgets about only fighting when necessary. The apartment he lived in is being renovated and he and Mr. Miyagi are somehow homeless, so he spends his entire college fund on a bonsai shop. He rappels halfway down a cliff to get a MacGuffin special bonsai tree that Miyagi somehow planted there long ago.

Karate's bad boy is heading to Cobra Kai. Sean Kanan, who played martial arts rebel Mike Barnes in 1989's The Karate Kid Part III, will appear on season five of the Netflix hit series, premiering Sept. 9. The arrival of Daniel Larusso's (Ralph Macchio) former foe was hinted at in the finale of season four, when Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) told a soon-to-be incarcerated Kreese (Martin Kove) that he was preparing to "call a couple old Cobra Kai buddies to help out while you're gone." Season 5 will welcome back Sean Kanan as Mike Barnes, who franchise devotees will remember as one of the main antagonists of “The Karate Kid III.” In that film, he was hired by Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) to take down Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) in the All Valley Karate Championship. Later in Season 3 of “Cobra Kai,” Daniel tells his daughter Sam that Mike was the most ruthless fighter he ever faced off against. Nothing hits harder in “Cobra Kai” than nostalgia.

“It’s a good question because most people, I would say even my parents probably have no idea what I really do,” jokes Emmy-nominated supervising sound editor Patrick Hogan about the primary responsibilities of a sound editor and the differences between his team and the sound editing team on a show like “Cobra Kai.”
For our recent webchat Hogan declares, “It takes a lot of people to make a movie or show and even on a TV show like this,” he explains, adding that “you’re talking probably 150 people between production and post-production who work on the show. So, while the sound department is one small group of those people, it’s still many people working towards a common goal. There’s different positions and different responsibilities that different people have and in order to get the final product and reinforce the vision and the story that the producers want to tell.

We don’t have any special effects, we don’t have any CGI,” reveals stunt coordinator Ken Barefield about the innovative stunt work on the Netflix blockbuster “Cobra Kai.” For our recent webchat he adds, “we don’t clean up any of our fights with any CGI; what you see is what you see,” he say, noting that “it’s a proud moment for us to be able to go practical.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Netflix blockbuster “Cobra Kai” revisits old rivals Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) 30 years after the original 1984 Oscar-nominated classic “The Karate Kid.” While the series’ first two seasons flew under the radar on YouTube’s premium service, it developed a loyal fan-base who relished reliving the decades-long feud between Johnny and Daniel as they fostered a new generation competing for All Valley karate supremacy.

“The show has had a long journey and we’ve been proud of the work that we’ve been doing since the beginning,” declares “Cobra Kai” co-creator Jon Hurwitz. “Every season of ‘Cobra Kai,’ while we try to take things up a notch and bring it to the next level in a lot of ways, we also try to stay true to the roots of what we love about this franchise,” adds Hayden Schlossberg, who alongside fellow co-creators Hurwitz and Josh Heald are now in post-production for the show’s highly anticipated fifth season. When Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) announces “Today is a turning point at Cobra Kai,” he means it. Every season of this show has ended in a game-changing cliffhanger. Last season, Sam’s (Mary Mouser) shocking loss to Tory (Peyton List) at the All Valley Karate Championship forces Daniel (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny (William Zabka) to close their dojos, Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang respectively. Silver is poised to take over the whole valley with Cobra Kai dojos. But after the abuse that he amassed upon teenage Daniel way back in The Karate Kid Part III, Daniel wants to cut the head off the snake, specifically the cobra.

Cobra Kai brought back the stars of The Karate Kid, including Elisabeth Shue, and Season 4 even reintroduced Karate Kid III’s Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith). So Hilary Swank, who played Julie Pierce in 1994’s The Next Karate Kid, is the last big name on the table. On a panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television panel, co-creator Hayden Schlossberg teased Swank’s possible return. At least, there’s no other show that could cast her as Julie Pierce.
Contenders TV — Deadline’s Complete Coverage
“Anything is possible,” Schlossberg said. “I always say if you’re a fan of The Next Karate Kid and you want to see Julie Pierce who Hilary Swank played, we’re the show to watch to see if that happens. Season 5 is going to be coming out. It’s in the can. Anything is possible. Julie Pierce is one of the toys in the toy chest so we’ll see.
