As a teen just getting into the world of low-budget horror movies, and straight to VHS fare, there were a handful of directors whose work I would buy and/or rent without fail and without any prior knowledge (besides the spiel on the back of the box) of what i was getting into. One of those directors was Fred Olen Ray, the genius behind such films as Scalps, Star Slammer, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Evil Toons, Cyclone and the awesome Scream Queen Hot Tub Party. However in the intervening years it’s safe to say I haven’t had the urge to watch as many of his flicks as I did in the 80s/90s heyday...

Once again, it's time for more various oddball trailers from the far reaches of cinema obscurity. So, without any further ado, let's check out some "coming attractions"! This week with an all "Girls" theme!
Gas Pump Girls (1979)
The late 70's was the last great hoo-rah for sleazy sexploitation films made specifically for the drive-in theater before cable TV and home video took over as the preferred (and more convenient) method for those looking for mindless T&A to take in a flick.
One such late 70's drive-in sex comedy was Gas Pump Girls directed by Joel Bender.
The film centers around June (Kristen Baker from Friday the 13th Part 2 and Midnight Madness), a ridiculously sexy young girl who takes over a gas station formerly run by her uncle. As you'd expect, business isn't exactly booming, but when June and her equally sexy friends (notably Sandy Johnson from Halloween and H.

When last we reported on Fred Olen Ray’s newest foray into CGI-free creature featuredom, it was titled Dire Wolf. The distributors must not have liked the word “dire” because the title is now Dino Wolf. Hey, that “dino” suffix sure has done b-movie wonders for crocs and sharks so why not a mammal for a change?
Maxwell Caulfield (Empire Records) and TV’s “Buck Rogers” Gil Gerard star in this bloodbath from the venerable b-moviemaker responsible for such cult favorites as Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers and Evil Toons/ about scientists regenerating a dire wolf from a nearly fossilized skeleton using human stem cells that results in the spawning of a human-dire wolf monstrosity that breaks loose and terrorizes the small nearby mountain village of Santa Mira Springs.
Dino Wolf will be making its world premiere at the B-Movie Celebration in Franklin, Indiana, for any of you in that area September...

B-movie legend Fred Olen Ray is hard at work on a movie called "Super Shark Attack," which looks more ridiculous than "Sharktopus" and "Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus" combined. We now have a trailer for it. Check it out below. In the new movie, the shark has emerged after centuries of being frozen in suspended animation. But unlike other sharks, it has evolved and has now swim, walk on land and apparently fly. The sci-fi mega shark thriller, stars John Schneider ("Smallville") and Jimmy Jj Walker ("Good Times"), and is directed by Ray (Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Evil Toons). Trailer:...

In the race to come up with the most outlandish maneating sea animal flick, it appears b-movie legend Fred Olen Ray is out to give Sharktopus a run for its money. As you'll see in this "Shark Week" parody teaser trailer for his latest creature feature Super Shark Attack, this gigantic shark not only rules the ocean as the ultimate predator and can "Air Jaws" with the best of them, you won't even be able to escape on shore now because this sucker can walk on dry land.
John Schneider may have survived Shark Swarm, but will he be "duke" enough to brave the "hazzard" of a walking land shark? Will Jimmie "Jj" Walker have enough "Dy-no-mite!" to defeat a super shark? Jerry Lacy ("Dark Shadows"), Tim Abell ("Soldiers of Fortune, Inc"), Sarah Lieving (Beast of Bray Road), and a bevy of bikini babes are amongst the tasty morsels that...

Roger Rabbit meets Witchcraft! If you're a fellow lover of B-movie camp then you've probably seen Fred Olen Ray’s over the top, 1980's fest, animated horror flick “Evil Toons”. This is a film that tries to be nothing more than B and it works like a charm. We just got news that a special edition DVD is due and we have the details...
Retromedia Entertainment and Infinity Entertainment Group are releasing this Special Edition DVD on May 4th. This film will certainly not appeal to everyone but if your fans of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" chances are this will rate high on your animation/live action meteor.
The DVD will be a 16×9 widescreen transfer of the film, commentary track from director Fred Olen Ray, original theatrical trailer, the original workprint, a behind-the-scenes documentary, and a few other goodies for fellow Evil Toon geeks.

It’s hard to believe that Fred Olen Ray’s impossibly goofy animated horror flick “Evil Toons” is twenty years old. Where hath the time gone? As sad as this may sound, “Evil Toons” was one of my first forays into the world of B-movie schlock, much to the dismay of my friends and family. My love of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” compelled me to watch this low-budget masterpiece, and although I wasn’t immediately smitten by the film’s wonky charms, it’s managed to grow on me like an unsightly cinematic fungus. Fortunately for fans of this fabulous feature, Retromedia Entertainment and Infinity Entertainment Group will release a 20th Anniversary Special Edition DVD on May 4th. Here’s what you get for you entertainment dollar: A crisp 16×9 widescreen transfer of the film, a commentary track from director Fred Olen Ray, the theatrical trailer, the original workprint, a behind-the-scenes documentary,...

Horror fanatics are still buzzing like chainsaws over the Academy Awards’ genre montage. Anywhere there could be a conversation about it online, there was one. Many were upset over the Twilight ‘tweens’ participation, as if their mere presence sent a message about the state of scary in Hollyweird, USA.
A few seemed happy, though, to just get a glimpse of their beloved Evil Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 if only for a few seconds. But many called the selections generic and thoughtless, demanding the likes of Demons and TerrorVision instead (well, maybe not TerrorVision; that was just me).
How about Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer? Re-Animator? It’s Alive? Tombs of the Blind Dead? Coffin Joe? No list is perfect, but with a bit more care and a phone call to any one of us, the Oscars could have elevated that section into a real scream. Or maybe they...

Fangoria is heartbroken to report that former Fango/Gorezone contributor Charlie (Chas.) Balun died on Friday, December 18, after a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer. He was 61. Beginning with his first self-published book, 1983’s The Connoisseur’S Guide To The Contemporary Horror Film, Balun was instrumental in popularizing splatter films (especially Italian gore flicks) and independent horror cinema to millions of budding horror fans during the 1980s and ’90s. He became a Fangoria writer in 1987 with issue #62 (“Jason: The Sultan of Slaughter”) and was one of Gorezone’s original columnists, penning Piece o’ Mind from 1988 to 1991.
“Balun was a distinctive and unique voice in talking about horror,” says Fango editor Tony Timpone, who first hired Balun to write for the magazine. “He was no-holds-barred, funny and caustic. He called attention to countless films that would have gone largely ignored if not for his critiques. He also championed the little-guy filmmakers...

The Associated Press has reported that actor David Carradine was found dead this morning in his hotel room in Bangkok, an apparent suicide. Carradine, who was in the Thai city to shoot a movie, was 72.
The actor was discovered by a hotel maid hanged with a curtain cord, and a preliminary police investigation found no signs of foul play. Further details are being withheld out of consideration for his family. Carradine’s long career ranged from the art house to the grindhouse and everything in between, with horror credits including Larry Cohen’s Q, Gary Graver’s Trick Or Treats, Robert Martin Carroll’s Sonny Boy, Anthony Hickox’s Sundown: The Vampire In Retreat (pictured) and Waxwork II: Lost In Time, Fred Olen Ray’s Evil Toons, Ethan Wiley’s Children Of The Corn V: Fields Of Terror, Mitch Marcus’ Knocking On Death’S Door, Mark Lambert Bristol’s The Monster Hunter,...

I actually came across this DVD cover on Amazon a few weeks ago, and it gave me a snort and a chuckle, but it wasn't until I got reminders from DVDActive and Shock that I thought "Yes. This motion picture, based only on the cast and (especially) the DVD cover, is certainly worthy of its own Cinematical article." And so here it is: Silent Venom, baby. Let's just take a second to soak up the brilliant lunacy of that DVD cover. (Really, how scary would a snake wrapped around a periscope be? Not very, if you're presently Inside the submarine.)
But that's demanding way too much logic from a DVD cover like this. Scheduled for release on June 2, Silent Venom (is there even such a thing as vociferous venom?) stars Luke Perry, Krista Allen, and (third-billed?) Tom Berenger as, I assume, a tough guy who eats venom for breakfast. The...

Since we've already had Snakes on a Plane and Snakes on a Train, that means both air and land are covered. Which must mean it’s now time for the snakes to go underwater? That's exactly what we'll get when Silent Venom surfaces onto DVD this June - snakes in a sub.
You know the drill. It all starts with a top secret military project involving a mutant breed of venomous snake. Isn't that how it always starts? Has there ever been a motion picture where such experiments don't result in the snakes getting loose and a massive loss of life? What's different this time is that the snakes get loose within the cramped confines of an undersea military submarine.
Technically speaking, this is not the first time snakes have run wild aboard a sub. David Janssen starred in the 1974 telefilm Fer-De-Lance that also saw poisonous snakes smuggled aboard a...

From the creator of Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers comes the gory prehistoric mutant monster rampage Dire Wolf. Prepare to experience "One Terror B.C."
Fred Olen Ray has been making B-movies for almost as long as I've been alive. Not sure which one of us that makes feel older. Having dipped his toes is just about every genre imaginable during his four decade career, horror fans probably best know Ray as the man behind the camera for Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Scalps, Evil Toons, the criminally underrated Deep Space, and a whole lot more where that came from. Though he's spent the past few years focusing primarily on softcore sex comedies with the word "bikini" in the title, Dire Wolf marks a return to his blood-soaked B-movie bonanzas of old.
