Given the state of the world around us today, it's not surprising that people are interested in post-apocalyptic settings. After all, you never know what skills or niche knowledge might save your life one day!
In all seriousness, though, post-apocalyptic scenarios can be a lot of fun. Packed with action, high stakes, and suspense, they keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Unfortunately, it's not easy to find a movie or TV series that does justice to the genre and doesn't rely on the same repetitive clichés.
If you're feeling the adrenaline rush and can't wait for Fallout to return with season 2, check out the movies below.

The 1990s were full of top-notch science fiction films that won over critics and set the box office on fire -- after all, we're talking about a decade that produced "Independence Day" (which beat "Mars Attacks!" to theaters), "The Matrix" (albeit with some complex behind-the-scenes activity), "The Fifth Element" (ripping off Plato to great effect) and the list goes on and on. But not every sci-fi release can be a winner, and the decade also had its fair share of stinkers. Whether they were derivative of other (better) films, hacked to pieces as a result of studio interference, or let down by the limitations of 1990s technology, there are endless reasons why an ambitious science-fiction project might crash and burn.
However, many of these ambitious but panned sci-fi movies are often not without their redeeming factors, and despite their negative reception -- especially on Rotten Tomatoes -- you can often...

If you’re a fan of both horror and soundtracks, like me, you know there’s an embarrassment of riches to collect– especially in the current golden age of boutique labels like Waxwork Records and One Way Static. Some of these horror soundtracks are highly uncommon, not because they’re for obscure films or TV series, but because they break the mold in numerous ways.
Read on for some of the most unusual horror soundtracks ever released….
And feel free to add your own oddities in the comments!
Monster In My Pocket (1992)
This might just be the most unusual soundtrack on this list, given that it’s for a toy line! It’s a shame I didn’t pick this up as a kid, because I loved Monster In My Pocket toys and this Halloween-y compilation sounds right up my alley. (I probably would have worn out the cassette playing it year round.

After the Horrorfest film festival (est. 2005) started receiving many feature films and short films from around the world with strong Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Animation elements (but not enough to fit the event's Horror theme), the organizers felt compelled to not let these amazing submissions fall by the wayside, and simply created a separate event. Thus Celludroid was born! (movie submissions at https://filmfreeway.com/Celludroid ) While its main focus is Science Fiction, Celludroid also include Animation and movies with Fantasy elements. Since its inception in 2009, Celludroid screened loads of great short films and some amazing movies, new, old and rare, from District 9, Iron Sky, Hardware, Montauk Chronicles and Dust Devil, to Akira, Lunopolis, Godkiller, War Of The Worlds: The True Story, Automatons, The Rift, Science Team and...

Billy Gibbons remembers Jim Morrison and Gram Parsons while driving around Joshua Tree in the video for “Desert High,” the latest single from the Zz Top rocker’s upcoming album Hardware.
On the track, Gibbons sing-speaks about Morrison (“The desert toad takes me for a ride/The Lizard King’s always by my side,” a nod to the Doors singer’s alter ego) and pays tribute to “Gram,” the Flying Burrito Brothers singer who died in a hotel room in Joshua Tree.

South African filmmaker Richard Stanley made his feature directorial debut in 1990 with Hardware, a post-apocalyptic science fiction flick about a self-repairing cyborg that goes on a rampage. His second film, 1992's Dust Devil, is a kind of supernatural Spaghetti Western about a shape-shifting, hitchhiking serial killer. These low-budget genre movies, while commercial failures, showed potential and made it possible for Stanley to work on his dream project – an adaptation of H.G. Wells' The Island of Doctor Moreau for New Line Cinema (in 1996). What was meant to be the filmmaker's big break became his undoing. After years of developing the script, Stanley was fired a few days after principal photography began and replaced by John Frankenheimer. The filmmaker retreated, quite literally, into the wilderness and left Hollywood behind. Ironically, the Doctor Moreau ordeal and Stanley's subsequent exile would be the catalyst for bringing him back into the spotlight. After seeing a 2014 documentary on the subject,...

Nicolas Cage is certainly building on his resume of genre-driven films with the new sci-fi horror pic Color Out of Space, which opens in limited release January 24. The film marks the first feature from celebrated cult filmmaker Richard Stanley since Hardware.
Based on the short story by H.P. Lovecraft, the film follows Nathan Gardner (Cage) and his family after a meteorite lands in the front yard of their farm. As things unravel, the family finds themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism as it infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a technicolor nightmare.
The film, which Stanley co-wrote with Scarlett Amaris also stars Joely Richardson, Madeleine Arthur, Brendan Meyer, Julian Hilliard, Elliot Knight, Q’orianka Kilcher and Tommy Chong.
The U.S. rights to the film were acquired by Rlje Films ahead of its Midnight Madness premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this past September. Based on the trailer (which you can watch below), the film is very much in the same vein of Mandy a fever dream of a thriller that also starred Cage. Like Mandy, the film is produced by Elijah Wood’s SpectreVision and Xyz films. Mandy banked a worldwide gross of $1,335,484.
Color Out of Space is produced by SpectreVision’s Daniel Noah, Josh C. Waller, Lisa Whalen and Elijah Wood. Executive producers are Timur Bekbosunov, Johnny Chang, Emma Lee and Peter Wong for Ace Pictures, which is also financing. Stacy Jorgensen serves as executive producer for SpectreVision.
The modern-day B-movie has already garnered a cult audience and has been gaining traction since its world premiere at Tiff with an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is set to open in 75 theaters with an additional 150 one-night-only eventized screenings at Regal, Drafthouse, AMC, Landmark and various independent chains.
Todd Robinson’s all-star Vietnam drama The Last Full Measure starring Sebastian Stan, Christopher Plummer and William Hurt will also debut this we The film follows the true story of Vietnam War hero William H. Pitsenbarger (Jeremy Irvine), a U.S. Air Force Pararescuemen medic who personally saved over 60 men in the Army’s 1st Infantry Division during a devastating 1966 battle, losing his own life in the process.
Fast forward 32 years later and Pentagon staffer Scott Huffman (Stan) is tasked with investigating a Congressional Medal of Honor request for Pitsenbarger made by his best friend and partner on the mission (Hurt) and his parents (Plummer and Diane Ladd). Scott seeks out the testimony of Army veterans who witnessed Pitsenbarger’s heroic rescues He talks to Takoda (Samuel L. Jackson), Burr (Peter Fonda) and Mott (Ed Harris), but as he more about Pitsenbarger’s courageous acts, he uncovers a high-level conspiracy behind the decades-long denial of the medal, prompting him to put his own career on the line to seek justice for the fallen airman. The film also stars LisaGay Hamilton, Amy Madigan, Linus Roache, John Savage, Alison Sudol and Bradley Whitford.

Also opening this weekend is the Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari-directed Panga, which is inspired by the life of a national level Kabaddi player from India. The film starring Kangana Ranaut, Jassie Gill, Richa Chadda, Neena Gupta and Yagya Bhasin is set to open globally on January 24 with over 100 theaters across North America.
The female-fronted pic is very much a “second act” type of story that sheds light on the ups and downs of a middle-class Indian woman who is a forgotten world champion of the popular South Asian sport of Kabaddi. She looks to give a new meaning to her existing role as a wife and mother and makes the choice to return to the sport and in turn, challenges age stereotypes and a new generation complexities. In turn, she creates an upheaval in her life as she is torn between family responsibility and love for the sport.
Detective Chinatown 3 will also debut this weekend and will continue the wildly successful action-comedy buddy franchise starring Baiqiang Wang and Haoran Liu. The third installment finds detectives Tang Ren and Qin Feng in Tokyo as they investigate a crime alongside Noda Hiroshi (Satoshi Tsumabuki). As a result, a hilarious battle of detectives ensue. With Chen Sicheng returning to the director’s chair, the film is one of the biggest U.S. releases of a Chinese-language film. The first installment debuted in 2015 and earned $125,112,232 in China and $474,252 stateside while the 2018 sequel earned a mind-boggling $541,406,438 at the Chinese box office and $1,983,984 domestically.

Director Richard Stanley brings his long-awaited Color Out of Space to the screen at last.
Color Out of Space adapts what legendary horror author H.P. Lovecraft considered his personal favorite short story, “The Colour Out of Space.” Although the film is set in the present, it is faithful to the original 1927 narrative, in which a family is both driven to madness and altered physically by the presence of an alien entity that has landed on their farm in a meteorite.
The new film stars Nicolas Cage as the head of the doomed Gardner family, while the director and writer is Richard Stanley, the South African-born filmmaker whose feature career got off to an acclaimed start in 1990 with the cyberhorror thriller Hardware. Stanley followed that with the troubled but still visionary Dust Devil in 1992, and then landed his first Hollywood assignment in 1996 with a third film version of...

Chicago – Richard Stanley has finally steered clear from one of the most infamous chapters of movie history. His new narrative feature film is “Color Out of Space.” It is his first since being let go from the 1996 “The Island of Dr. Moreau.” After much gnashing of teeth and a documentary about it later, Stanley went back to his childhood roots for “Color,” a horror sci-fi epic featuring Nicolas Cage.
A family is on the brink in the fictional town of Arkham, Massachusetts (part of the universe created by sci-fi author H.P. Lovecraft). After they inherit a rural family estate, their struggling artist patriarch Nathan Gardner (Nicolas Cage) is trying to keep his wife Theresa (Joely Richardson) and children focused on adaptation. That changes one evening when a small meteorite crashes in the yard. Although the purple-glowing orb soon withers into dust, it infects the local water supply. After directing two of the most genuinely idiosyncratic genre movies of the 1990s: Hardware and Dust Devil—the former is a frenzied cyberpunk dystopia splatter film that exists at the exact intersection of Mad Max and The Terminator, the latter an African spaghetti western with hints of mystic horror—South African genre filmmakers Richard Stanley makes his cinematic return thirty years later with his adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s personal favorite of his own stories, Color Out of Space.
Starring Nicolas Cage as the head of the Gardner family whose property is infected by a meteor that begins to mutate the biology and psychology of everything it touches, Stanley’s film weaponizes the actor’s meta-comedic persona, psychedelic imagery and grotesque body horror to craft a film that is on an irregular and grotesque wavelength of its own making. Color Out of Space is the latest feature from actor Nicolas Cage and production company SpectreVision. Film fans can see some of SpectreVisions' unique visual style from one of their previous, amazing film's Mandy (2018). Full of vibrant colours, the first trailer for Color Out of Space shows a world turned upside down, after a meteor strike. This title will show in theatres and on Digital platforms this January. Also starring Joely Richardson (Event Horizon), Madeleine Arthur, Brendan Meyer and Julian Hilliard, Color Out of Space blends sci-fi and horror, at a remote ranch. The film's first trailer is here. South African director Richard Stanley helms this film enterprise. Film aficionados might recognize Stanley from his work on The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996). This earlier project broke Stanley down in the Australian Outback as the stress over a remote shooting and creative differences caused serious challenges. Director John Frankenheimer (Reindeer Games) would.

Nicolas Cage stars in Color Out of Space, adapting H.P. Lovecraft’s story about a mysterious meteor’s effect on a small town.
Color Out of Space may be one of many when it comes to star Nicolas Cage’s current spate of debt-decreasing payday pictures, but this one arrives with the unique context of being a wantonly wild adaptation of a story by legendary horror author H.P. Lovecraft.
This prospective new source of “Cage Rage” memes has the iconic headliner playing a family man whose farm estate existence becomes incredibly inconvenienced when a meteorite lands on his front yard; an event that becomes the catalyst for an outbreak of a mutant virus that runs roughshod across his Massachusetts small town, jeopardizing his family and neighbors.

Five years ago, one of the most famously troubled productions in movie history was colorfully detailed in the documentary “Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Doctor Moreau.” Its major takeaway was the cruel injustice of a director being removed from a project that had been his baby from inception. If you wondered what Stanley might’ve got up to had that experience not traumatized him out of the business (some documentaries and shorts aside) for more than a quarter-century, there’s finally an answer of sorts in “Color Out of Space.”
His first big-screen narrative feature since 1992 returns to the berserk mixes of external fantasy and personal idiosyncrasy that made pre-“Island” efforts “Hardware” and “Dust Devil” cult favorites. It’s based on a much-adapted H.P. Lovecraft story, and like most prior versions, takes considerable liberties with the original material. Entertaining but uneven, the...

Rlje Films has picked up U.S. rights to Richard Stanley’s horror/sci-fi feature Color Out of Space for low-to-mid seven figures ahead of pic’s Tiff Midnight Madness Saturday night world premiere. The movie, which is also produced by Elijah Wood’s SpectreVision and Xyz films, reps another collaboration between the three companies on another Cage vehicle, last year’s horror pic Mandy being the previous title.
The movie, which stars Nicolas Cage and Joely Richardson, is based on the short story by H.P. Lovecraft. After a meteorite lands in the front yard of their farmstead, Nathan Gardner (Cage) and his family find themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism as it infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a technicolor nightmare.
For Stanley, Color Out of Space reps his return to the Midnight Madness lineup after 29 years, his last being the sci-fi thriller Hardware.

Nicolas Cage is set to star in a film called Color Out of Space which is based on H.P. Lovecraft’s 1927 novella. The film is being produced by SpectreVision, who also produced Cage’s crazy-ass horror film Mandy.

They are busy adapting to their new life when a meteorite crashes into their front yard. It seems to melt into the earth, infecting both the land and the properties of space-time with a strange, otherworldly color, and to the family’s horror they discover the alien force is gradually mutating every life form that it touches including them.”

It took a few decades, but Nicolas Cage and H.P. Lovecraft are finally combining forces. SpectreVision has announced the actor will be starring in “Color Out of Space,” a new adaptation of the legendary author’s short story. The film is set to be the latest collaboration between Cage and SpectreVision, which last year brought audiences the midnight movie sensation “Mandy.”
Although starring Cage and backed by the “Mandy” producing team, “Color Out of Space” boasts a different director: Richard Stanley, who directed the 1990 sci-fi thriller “Hardware” and was the original director of the infamous 1996 version of “The Island of Dr. Moreau.”
“Color Out of Space” will star Cage as a man whose family starts to be affected both physically and psychologically by the crash landing of a meteorite. When the incoming space chunk brings with it a mysterious alien force, some significant changes begin to happen. The rest of...

You’ve never seen a chase scene like the one at the start of “Mortal Engines”: A young woman scans the horizon and sees London, the whole city, rolling towards her on giant tank treads. She races back to another, smaller city and sounds an alarm. All the businesses and residences suddenly retract into a shell, and the smaller city rolls away at top speed.
Two giant cities are now chasing each other across the countryside, power-sliding towards the lips of a canyon, until one of them eats the other.
The only rational response to “Mortal Engines” is “Wow.”

Richard Stanley has always marched to the beat of a unique drum. He hasn’t made very many narrative films (Hardware, Dust Devil) since arriving at the turn of the ’90s, but he has always fascinated due to his quirky spirit and dedication to the odd and unusual. And so it goes that his documentary The Otherworld (2013) follows a path true to his nature, but is shot with a touching sense of humanity in its look at strange phenomena and the people who embrace it.
The Otherworld is Stanley’s journey to an area of southern France he dubs “The Zone”; a place that holds many mysteries, especially to the folks that inhabit the land tucked away in the Pyrenees Mountains. Montsegur, Bugarach, and especially Rennes-Le-Chateau are regions and townships filled with fascinating characters and mystique necessary to elevate the material beyond a gorgeous travelogue, which it most definitely is as well.

This is a decent zombie horror-comedy from multitalented director Peter Ricq. While on vacation, three kids discover a nearby neighbor is harboring her undead family who need to be fed, and they have to save their unsuspecting parental guardians. It’s kind of a tourist trap led up by Lauren Holly as the neighbor. There’s some good humor from the father Roger (Donavon Stinson) who’s got good timing even if those around him don’t. He was the highlight for me, while the kids were all decent as well.
This is a fun little zombie flick, offering up cute comedy and decent gore effects, but it doesn’t bring anything new to the table. The biggest problem for me was a tonal shift; what’s relatively lighthearted for 90% of the movie is heavily marred by a shockingly grim finale. Worth a look for fans of the genre,...

Jinga to rep international and ICM Partners to handle North America.
UK sales outfit Jinga Films has boarded Brandon Christensen’s debut supernatural horror Still/Born for international sales with ICM Partners representing North America.
Following its Us premiere at Overlook Film Festival the film won the event’s Scariest Film Award.
Produced and co-written by Colin Minihan (Grave Encounters 1 & 2) and starring Christie Burke (Twilight: Breaking Dawn), Jesse Moss (Tucker And Dale Vs Evil), Rebecca Olson (Kindergarten Cop 2) and Michael Ironside (Starship Troopers), the film follows a young mother who after losing one of her twins during childbirth, spirals into madness thinking that her other child is in danger from an evil entity.

Following in the footsteps of the likes of David Cronenberg, German filmmaker Norbert Keil is set to unleash his own brand of body-horror on unsuspecting audiences with Replace – which Keil co-wrote with the legend that is Richard Stanley (Hardware).
Replace stars Barbara Crampton, Rebecca Forsythe, Lucie Aron and Sean Knopp; and tells the story of a young woman with a strange skin disease, who is forced to make a choice when she discovers she can replace her own decaying skin with another woman’s… Shades of Brian Thomas Jones’ The Rejuvenator perhaps?
Young and beautiful Kira is afflicted with a strange disease where her skin ages rapidly to the point of drying out and crumbling away. When she discovers that she can replace her own skin with somebody else’s, she has to make a choice: watch her own body wither and die or give in to temptation…… whatever the price.
