Trailer
Netflix has dropped the trailer for its upcoming adult stop-motion anthology special “The House,” produced by U.K.-based Nexus Studios and coming to the streamer on Jan. 14. The special features three unconnected stories which Netflix described as an “eccentric dark comedy” when it was presented at Annecy in June. The stories centers around a single house in three realities, and those who live there. In the trailer, we meet some of the human and animal inhabitants and get a taste of the program’s blood-cooling aesthetics and tone.
The special is loaded with top-tier talent. Chapter one is directed by Belgian auteurs Emma de Swaef and Marc James Roels (“This Magnificent Cake!”), Chapter two by Swedish director Niki Lindroth von Bahr (“The Burden”) and Chapter three by Paloma Baeza (“Poles Apart”). The voice cast boasts a start-studded lineup including Mia Goth, Matthew Goode, Claudie Blakley, Mark Heap, Joshua McGuire,...

No bodices were harmed in veteran French filmmaker Patrice Leconte's chaste and bloodless English-language debut, a love-triangle costume drama that never sparks the artful sensuality found in his earlier hits like The Girl on the Bridge, Ridicule, or The Hairdresser's Husband.
Perhaps diluted in translation, this awkwardly scripted adaptation of Stefan Zweig's novella Journey into the Past casts Anglo-Saxon actors in Belgium as an austere stand-in for cusp-of-wwi Germany. Recognizing ingenuity and dedication in his newest employee, steelworks baron Karl Hoffmeister (Alan Rickman, stately and bored) quickly promotes modest engineering prodigy Friedrich Zeitz (Richard Madden, a handsome wet noodle) to be his personal secretary.

I've mentioned before how several years ago I created a list using Roger Ebert's Great Movies, Oscar Best Picture winners, IMDb's Top 250, etc. and began going through them doing my best to see as many of the films on these lists that I had not seen as I possibly could to up my film I.Q. Well, someone has gone through the exhaustive effort to take all of the films Roger Ebert wrote about in his three "Great Movies" books, all of which are compiled on his website and added them to a Letterbxd list and I've added that list below. I'm not positive every movie on his list is here, but by my count there are 363 different titles listed (more if you count the trilogies, the Up docs and Decalogue) and of those 363, I have personally seen 229 and have added an * next to those I've seen. Clearly I have some work to do,...

Wind down your window, take your ticket and find a space for this week's clips celebrating the magic of the multi-storey
One of the great glories of cinema is that it has the power to take the mundane and make it magical. To most of us, car parks signify a world of pain, where fearsome red-and-white crash barriers dictate our fate and where finding a space is often like finding meaning in the collective works of Martin Lawrence. To others, they meant lost Saturday afternoons spent waiting for your mum to finally come out of Woolworths so you could rush home to catch Terrahawks. Either way, car parks are grey and dull. In the movies, however, they are fantastic places, filled with high-level espionage, high-octane chases and Willem Dafoe going down on Madonna. Here are five car park sequences worth reserving a permanent bay for …

When I first got into collecting movies part of my obsession was all of those great extra features that would give me a behind the scenes look into a film and its creation. It never really crossed my mind that someone had to put those together. Someone does. A lot of people do. In fact, it is a nice little cottage industry. There are several companies dedicated solely to creating extra features for DVD and Blu-ray releases. One of these companies started out as Blue Underground in the UK many years ago with Carl Daft and David Gregory. Daft and Gregory were middle school friends with a passion for films. While they were working on Jim Van Bebber's The Manson Family in Los Angeles, they hooked up with John Cregan and started working together as Severin Films in 2006. In 2009, Evan Husney came on the scene, allegedly as the result...

LONDON -- Paramount Classics acquired multiterritory distribution rights Thursday to Patrice Leconte's L'Homme Du Train (The Man on the Train) in a deal with the French-based arm of sales operation Pathe International. The deal, struck during the Venice International Film Festival, where the film screened to great acclaim Tuesday, sees the specialty film division of Paramount Pictures secure distribution rights to Leconte's film for North America, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Paramount Classics co-president Ruth Vitale finalized the acquisition for an undisclosed sum with Pathe International sales director Pascal Diot on the Lido. Train, written by Claude Klotz (The Hairdresser's Husband), stars Jean Rochefort and French rock 'n' roll icon Johnny Hallyday.
