Producer Don Boyd had tried to set this up in 1976 with Marcello Mastroianni in the Peter O'Toole role.
The film was nominated for 3 AFI (Australian Film Institute) Awards in 1991 - Best Sound, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design - but failed to take home a gong in any of these three categories.
Australian press advertisement publicity for this picture exclaimed that for this film, English actor Peter O'Toole, was "returning to the desert for the first time since 'Lawrence of Arabia' [1962]."
The picture was an official French-Australian co-production
This French-Australian co-production never garnered a home video release on video-cassette in Australia and was not released on DVD there until 2019.
