Plot: The life and career of Gene Wilder are remembered by his friends and colleagues.
Review: Gene Wilder was a one-of-a-kind talent. While it seems like he’s mostly remembered these days for playing Willy Wonka (with his performance inspiring Timothee Chalamet’s recent take), there was a lot more to him than just that one film. For one thing, his cinematic partnership with Mel Brooks resulted in three all-time classics: The Producers, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. Plus, he and Richard Pryor made an iconic mismatched duo in a slew of films (some better than others), while Wilder directed several highly successful films on his own.
In this loving tribute to the late icon, director Ron Frank pulls back the curtain to dip into both Wilder’s creative process and sometimes tragic life. Pulling from an audiobook he recorded of his memoirs, the film is distinguished because Wilder himself tells much of the story.

While the names Vince McMahon and Hulk Hogan have been suplexed by controversy lately, it’s impossible to ignore how popular they had made the WWE, then WWF, back in the ’80s and ’90s. In 1989, the maniacal McMahon had a genius idea to make Hogan, already a megastar and the longtime world champion, even bigger. Let’s make him the biggest Hollywood actor, too! Enter No Holds Barred, Hulk Hogan’s first starring movie role and the first movie/wrestling crossover event ever! Oh, and did I mention it featured Friday favorite Tom “Tiny” Lister as the mega heel? Damn right. Let’s go!

Two of the hottest tickets in Hollywood, Jennifer Coolidge and Brian Cox (Succession), are about to be joined by Dustin Hoffman and Gabrielle Union for the crime comedy Riff Raff. Dito Montiel directs from a script by John Pollono (Stronger).
The star-studded project revolves around the ordinary life of a former criminal whose world turns upside down when his old family shows up for a long-awaited reckoning. With cameras ready to roll in September, Riff Raff heads to the Cannes market this week for international sales, with Capstone organizing domestic rights with CAA Media Finance and WME Independent. Noah Rothman produces through Canopy Partners, with Marc Goldberg and Sarah Gabriel producing via Signature Films.
“We are thrilled to partner with the producers and Dito on this project; we’ve loved it ever since we’ve read it. It embodies the type of crime comedies we grew up with – witty and entertaining.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Flash Season 9 Episode 2, “Hear No Evil.”] In its final season, The Flash kills off a character who had been part of its DNA since before the series premiere (having appeared in an episode of Arrow first). “Hear No Evil” reveals that the plan to try to bring back Frost (Danielle Panabaker) resulted in Caitlin’s (also Panabaker’s) death. Someone new, going by Snow (also Panabaker), emerged, but Mark (Jon Cor) remains determined to resurrect Frost. When it becomes clear that Snow can go back into the Crc, but only Caitlin or Frost can be brought back, there’s a vote, but in the end, they leave it up to Snow to decide. She chooses herself — honoring Caitlin since “she created a person with feeling and free will” — and her new name: Khione. The end of the episode also saw Red Death (after using the villains working for her...

The Flash Season 9 Episode 2
As we begin the final season of The Flash, one of the biggest outstanding questions the show still had to answer was what exactly happened to Caitlin Snow. A the end of season 8, Team Flash’s resident scientist sealed herself into a homemade cryochamber to try and resurrect or somehow replicate her dead sister, Frost. But the being that exited the device in the season 9 premiere certainly didn’t appear to be anyone we’d ever seen before. But who is this woman? What does she want? And what has happened to Caitlin?
“Hear No Evil” certainly doesn’t waste any time giving us answers to several of those lingering questions, but fans may not like some of them. Because it appears that Caitlin Snow is dead, and has been replaced by a third, heretofore unknown Snow sister, a woman...

Since the first panels premiered on Daily Dead during Comic-Con, we've been excited to showcase artist Jeff Fuller's living dead comic strip Zomics, which finds the macabre humor in the everyday horrors of a zombie apocalypse. We'll be releasing a new installment of Zomics every Thursday, and today we're excited to share a new panel that offers a special twist on the three wise monkeys!
This week's installment of Zomics is a reminder that in the living dead apocalypse, many body parts decay and fall off, meaning that some zombies can literally "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil."
In case you missed Fuller's previous Zomics panels, you can check out all of them in the gallery below, and stay tuned to Daily Dead next Thursday for another installment!

This week Hear No Evil investigates the very disturbing case of Mike DeBardeleben, the so-called “Mall Passer” or “Mall Killer”. During the early 1980s the Secret Service had been investigating a new counterfeit operation and had began handing out sketches of the suspect to various stores. By chance they had just left one when the clerk recognised a man trying to pass off a fake bill. After a foot chase he was apprehended and a search of his car revealed some items that made them think he was involved in some more serious crimes. In the trunk were thousands in...read more...

The sad news for fans of film comedy spread like wildfire earlier this week. Here’s the opening paragraph facts from the New York Times:
Gene Wilder, who established himself as one of America’s foremost comic actors with his delightfully neurotic performances in three films directed by Mel Brooks; his eccentric star turn in the family classic “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”; and his winning chemistry with Richard Pryor in the box-office smash “Stir Crazy,” died early Monday morning at his home in Stamford, Conn. He was 83.
A nephew, the filmmaker Jordan Walker-Pearlman, confirmed his death in a statement, saying the cause was complications of Alzheimer’s disease.
Mr. Wilder’s rule for comedy was simple: Don’t try to make it funny; try to make it real. “I’m an actor, not a clown,” he said more than once.

Gene Wilder died yesterday at the age of 83, and as frequently happens following celebrity deaths, random bits from his career have begun to resurface. That includes this lovely interview he and Richard Pryor did with Texas entertainment journalist Bobbie Wygant back in 1989. It’s not a particularly comedic chat (although there are plenty of jokes), but it shows off a more thoughtful side of both performers.
Bobbie Wygant Interviews Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder for See No Evil, Hear No Evil 1989 from Erik Clapp Films on Vimeo.
The duo were promoting their new comedy See No Evil, Hear No Evil, and the conversation first turns to the research they did for their roles (Pryor plays a blind character and Wilder plays a deaf one). Perhaps surprisingly for such a broad film, they seem to have taken their preparation seriously; Pryor spent two weeks working with the Braille ...

Los Angeles – The genius comedy of Gene Wilder was often in the subtlety. With a slow burn or a raised eyebrow, Wilder was able to draw big laughs. The star of “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” and “Young Frankenstein” died in Stamford, Connecticut, according to his nephew in Los Angeles. He was 83.
Wilder was well into his thirties before the first big break came along in 1967, in the classic film “Bonnie and Clyde.” From there he was able to trade in his frizzy-haired persona in his co-starring role in Mel Brook’s “The Producers” (1968). It was his collaboration with Brooks that certified his legacy, with one-two punch of “Blazing Saddles” and “Young Frankenstein” in 1974. He was also held in high regard by a generation of children with his classic turn as the title character in “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” (1971).

Less than two years after Wilder married Saturday Night Live star Gilda Radner. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and died on May 20th 1989, at age 42. Wilder wrote and directed The Woman In Red (1984) and starred in two other films with Radner. After she died, Wilder became actively involved in promoting awareness of ovarian cancer and helped found the Gilda Radner Ovarian Cancer Detection Center in Los Angeles and co-founding Gilda's Club.
Wilder reportedly became a comic performer in order to cheer up his dying mother.

Gene Wilder, comic extraordinaire and accomplished actor, has died at the age of 83.
He’s been making us laugh on the big screen for as long as we can remember, playing iconic roles in classic films like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Blazing Saddles, and Young Frankenstein. Wilder was an incredibly diverse comedian known for his penchant for collaboration with the likes of Richard Pryor and Mel Brooks.
We’ll never forget watching Wilder play Willy Wonka himself, bringing Roald Dahl’s vision to life in all his wacky craziness. With a career that spanned decades and mediums, Wilder was one of the most respected comics of his generation. He was married to SNL alum Gilda Radner until her untimely death, and the two undoubtedly made the funniest couple in Hollywood.

Willy Wonka star and all-round comedy great Jerome Silberman – better known to you and I as the inimitable Gene Wilder – has passed away following complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was 83.
Wilder’s nephew, Jordan Walker-Pearlman, confirmed that the stage and screen icon had died at his home in Stamford, Connecticut on Monday, August 29. Wilder had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma back in 1989. Further details are not currently available at this time.
Before landing his defining role as the title character in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Gene Wilder enjoyed his screen debut through the Armstrong Circle Theatre TV series. That was in ’62, before holding a bit-part in Bonnie and Clyde five years later; it wasn’t until 1968, however, that Wilder made his first major breakthrough with the Leopold Bloom film.

Arthur Hiller with his Jean Hersholt Huminatarian AwardOscar nominated Canadian born Hollywood director Arthur Hiller died yesterday at 92 years of age. Though he's best remembered for the 1970 mega-hit Love Story -- so popular in its day it would have been equivalent to a Jurassic World at the box office today (no really) -- his career was actually quite varied. He did dramas, romances, buddy comedies, period pieces, you name it.
Among his best known films which is your favorite?
The Americanization of Emily (1964) The Out of Towners (1970) Love Story (1970) Plaza Suite (1971) Man of La Mancha (1972) Silver Streak (1976) The In-Laws (1979) Making Love (1982) Author! Author! (1982) Outrageous Fortune (1987) See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989)
Outrageous Fortune was probably my favorite of his films - Bette Midler & Shelley Long were so funny together -- but the film that's the most interesting, historically, is Making Love as it was the very first mainstream Lgbt film.

Arthur Hiller was never the coolest filmmaker in the room. He leaves behind a list of films that were genuinely loved by audiences and an ocean of collaborators and friends who speak of him in glowing terms, and honestly, as a storyteller, what more could anyone ask? There’s certainly some cachet in the idea that you’re breaking new ground stylistically or you’re doing things that other people are ripping off or you’re part of some formal movement of deconstructionists. I like plenty of filmmakers who chase cool like it is oxygen, necessary for their entire existence. Arthur Hiller, though, was a meat and potatoes kind of guy, and he made movies that spoke to his optimistic view of who we could be as people, shot through with just a hint of cynicism at times. My personal favorite of his movies is The In-Laws, which I just rewatched a few weeks ago.

Shooting a hole straight through the gut of the traditional narrative of empowerment, Atilla Till’s “Kills on Wheels” effectively does for hyper-violent gangster thrillers what “Murderball” did for inspirational sports documentaries. It starts with a brilliantly cockeyed premise: If the world doesn’t believe that disabled people are capable of living among us, then the police might never imagine that disabled people are capable of killing among us, either. From that idea, Till spins a sloppy but uproariously clever urban fable, one that doesn’t sanctify or belittle the handicapped, but rather shines new light on that invisible population by inviting them to play the most visible of movie archetypes: assassins.
Janos Rupaszov (able-bodied Hungarian star Szabolcs Thuróczy, recently seen in last year’s “White God”) is a salty middle-aged badass unlike any the cinema has known before. On one hand, he’s a classic archetype: The beefy, aging...

Home invasion thrillers share several aspects, but one of the more common among them is that the home being invaded is typically occupied by a single woman. Clearly women shouldn’t be allowed to live alone, but until we can pass a law forbidding such things from happening their dwellings will continue to be death traps. Maddie (Kate Siegel) is the latest woman to tempt fate by living on her own, but she has a second characteristic that potentially marks her as even more of a victim in the eyes of an assailant — she’s deaf. An illness took her hearing when she was just a teenager, and while she’s found a career as a writer and maintains relationships with family and a seemingly small group of friends, she’s also grown a bit withdrawn over the years. She’d rather avoid situations — dealing with an ex, meeting new people — but her hand is forced when...

"That Justin Theroux guy - where do I know him from?" Depending on whom you ask, you could get a great many answers. Of course, he's the husband of Jennifer Aniston, but he's had a string of notable acting roles too. He could be that guy from The Leftovers, the actor who played the hapless director character in Mulholland Drive, Leslie Knope's short-lived boyfriend on Parks and Recreation, or even the bad guy from Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. However, Theroux is also a screenwriter, and he's credited with a handful of major films that casual movie-goers might not associate with him.

Derek Zoolander and Hansel are back, strutting their stuff not on screen but on the Valentino runway on Tuesday at Paris Fashion Week. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson made an appearance as their iconic 2001 characters at the event, subsequently announcing Zoolander 2 for release on February 12, 2016.
Pret-a-Reporter is reporting that the film is currently shooting in Rome and that Penelope Cruz is on board to appear in the sequel along with Will Ferrell returning and Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder, Iron Man 2) writing the screenplay.
The original Zoolander from 2001 has been something of a cult darling as Stiller has moved on to bigger and better things, but this will also be Stiller’s fifth feature film and his follow-up to The Secret Life of Walter Mitty from 2013. Stiller is also serving as producer on this film as well as two other major upcoming sequels, Space Jam 2 and Dodgeball 2.
