- Jake [James Raftery] was turned by a vampire in 1944 when he was 19 years old. It's now 1993. Jake is 70 years old, although he still looks 19, and all he has to show for it is a mattress in an abandoned building in the East Village and a job as a waiter in a greasy diner. He preys on the village artsy-farties, the pretty young girls who wannabee dancers, singers, and poets and who are willing to go home with a good-looking guy they just met in the local bar.
Jake wakes up one evening to radio reports of the day's deaths, murders, suicides, and rapes. He trudges down to the diner for a bite to eat and to work his shift. He's nonplussed when his friend gives him a lecture about finding a purpose in life so that he'll be somebody when he's in his 40s. After work, he has a few beers at the diner, where he hooks up with Zohra Santiago [Karen Wexler], an aspiring dancer. They go home together, have a beer, and Jack drains her dry during sex, after which he cleans off her body and stuffs it in a black plastic bag. Unfortunately, Zohra has a brother, and Angel Santiago [John Leguizamo] is determined to find out what happened to her after she doesn't come home that night. He starts going around the village, showing photos of Zohra, posting flyers, and asking questions.
Jake is in a funk. He lays on his mattress thinking about the life and love he had in the 40s. His friends begin to notice that Jake's getting pale and sickly, but he pushes them away because he doesn't want to prey on them. He meets another girl with whom he seems to share a rapport, but he winds up drinking from her and chopping up her body so that she doesn't "come back just like me." Somehow, Angel's search leads him to Jake. Angel tries to rough up Jake, but Jake overpowers him and drinks his blood, covering over Angel's body with old newspapers as he lay dying on the sidewalk. Jake knows that it's time to move on. He gives his cat to one of his friends and closes up the diner, not knowing that Angel is lurking in the corner. Angel is now a vampire and is still looking for revenge for what Jake did to his sister. [Original synopsis by bj_kuehl.]
