Bill Maher may be done with stand-up comedy. The comedian said this week he believes his upcoming HBO special will be his last.
Maher revealed the news during a conversation with fellow comic Jerry Seinfeld on his Club Random podcast. Maher told his friend he felt “nervous” to tell him, “but after this year, I’m going to stop doing [stand-up],” he said.
Seinfeld appeared shocked by the news, to which Maher said, “I don’t want to make a big announcement or something,” but noted that his upcoming special for HBO — scheduled for later this year — will be his 13th.
“That’s a lot,” Seinfeld said.
Maher agreed, and added, “I put a lot of time and effort into it. As you know, stand-up is like playing the cello. You can’t just walk up there. You have to stay in practice. And I do, I’ve always loved it.

Talk show host Greg Gutfeld has signed a new multi-year agreement with Fox News Media that will keep his comedy-driven late night show “Gutfeld!” on the Fox News Channel for a while longer.
As part of the deal, Gutfeld will continue his duties as a panelist on “The Five,” Fox News Media’s late afternoon political roundtable discussion program, and will produce the occasional show for Fox News Media’s streaming service, Fox Nation.
“Greg is a true original whose trademark political and cultural commentary, humor and gifted writing has deeply connected and grown with our audience for more than 17 years,” Fox News Media CEO Suzanne Scott said in a statement on Thursday. “Upon launching Gutfeld! three years ago, he rapidly disrupted the status quo to become the most-watched host in the genre,...

HBO Real Time host Bill Maher is launching a podcast network.
The Club Random Studios network (the name is derived from Maher’s Club Random podcast), will seek to host podcasts built on an idea of “freedom of expression,” the late night host tells The Hollywood Reporter.
“I am looking for people who are not talking point people. I’m looking for people who don’t, before they speak, say, ‘what’s the right answer here?'” Maher added.
The first podcast on the network, which Maher is backing alongside co-creators Chris Case and Chuck Labella, will be hosted by Sage Steele, the former ESPN SportsCenter anchor who parted ways with the channel last year after settling a free speech lawsuit. Steele filed the suit alleging retaliation after she made controversial comments about the Covid-19 vaccine mandates on a podcast hosted by Jay Cutler.

The show will still be available to watch live and on demand on Max. The second showings will begin this coming weekend on March 23.
“The addition of ‘Real Time With Bill Maher’ to CNN’s weekend primetime lineup marks the start of a commitment and investment into topical entertainment programming that we’re bringing to the weekends,” Amy Entelis, CNN executive vice president of talent for CNN Originals and creative development for CNN Worldwide, said in a press release. “We’ve seen that audiences enjoy Bill’s perspective and approach to news and information, and we’re looking forward to the show now being on CNN.”

Bill Maher is getting more time for “Real Time” at HBO and its parent, Warner Bros. Discovery.
HBO has renewed the program for two more season, meaning that it will be served up via HBO and its streaming counterpart, Max, through 2026. “Two more years in the dream job of a lifetime, on the network so many dream of being on — I think that’s what we call a no-brainer,” Maher said in a statement.
The renewal keeps the acerbic comedian and commentator dishing out “New Rules” for the foreseeable future, which includes the 2024 presidential election, and, most likely, developments on issues close to Maher’s heart, including climate change, Donald Trump’s proposed political polices and liberal overreach.
“For 22 seasons and counting, Bill Maher remains a uniquely powerful voice in politics and culture. ‘Real Time’ is the rare place where people can both disagree and find common ground, which is more vital than ever,...

The actors’ and writers’ strikes have left countless people out of work for months as the two unions, SAG-AFTRA and the WGA, fight with the studios for better working conditions for their members. The strikes have also pushed the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards (originally set for Sept. 18) to January, stalled TV and film productions, and delayed the return of late-night talk shows indefinitely. With so many in the entertainment world out of work, actors and talk show hosts have found ways to raise money through the Entertainment Community Fund, the SAG-AFTRA relief fund,...

Bill Maher has decided to stop the clock on the return of “Real Time.”
The comedian, who last week vowed to put his topical HBO program back into production, now says he will delay it for a while longer.
“My decision to return to work was made when it seemed nothing was happening and there was no end in sight to this strike,” he said via social media. “Now that both sides have agreed to go back to the negotiating table I’m going to delay the return of ‘Real Time,’ for now, and hope they can finally get this done.” All of TV’s late-night series have gone dark in recent months due to the strike, but Maher said he could no longer stand by as so many of his below-the-line crew were going without being paid.

Bill Maher will soon be operating by some “New Rules” — and not just the ones he makes up in the signature segment of his HBO program.
The comedian and commentator plans to re-start production of “Real Time” on HBO without writers, the first of TV’s phalanx of late-night hosts to try and do so despite the continuing Hollywood strikes by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA.
“Real Time is coming back, unfortunately, sans writers or writing,” Maher said on social media Wednesday night. “It has been five months, and it is time to bring people back to work. The writers have important issues that I sympathize with, and hope they are addressed to their satisfaction, but they are not the only people with issues, problems, and concerns.” All of TV’s late-night shows, ranging from NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” to Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” have gone dark since...

A glimpse of stocking was once deemed shocking. But today, heaven knows…there are still limits on what you can say on certain broadcast outlets.
Bill Maher found that out the hard way.
Maher recently joined CNN with the segment Overtime, which uses the guests from his HBO show Real Time in an extended conversation.
The host was speaking with Kristen Soltis Anderson about Sarah Huckabee Sanders. The topic was “nepo babies,” the children of famous parents who got a leg up thanks to that association.
Maher expressed outrage that there was a perceived advantage. He said acting was not “f***ing hard,” before laughing and apologizing to CNN.
“Sorry, CNN. I know. I forgot. You’re not supposed to – Not on HBO.”
Despite CNN and HBO being part of the same company, there are different broadcast standards. You can say the “F-word” on HBO, a pay cable network. But...

The odds that “Jimmy Kimmel Live” would still be here, 20 years after its launch on Jan. 26, 2003, were astronomically low. The network hadn’t done a traditional late-night talk show since the short-lived “Into the Night With Rick Dees” in 1991, and the time slot’s previous inhabitant, “Politically Incorrect,” had been canceled due to declining ratings — and controversy over 9/11-related comments host Bill Maher had made.
Those early reviews were rough and the show struggled in its early months to book guests. And soon, Kimmel’s biggest backer at the network, then-abc chairman Lloyd Braun, was out the door.
But there was a glimmer of promise from the start: Early on, ABC execs said they were encouraged by the show’s first week national ratings, especially among young male viewers..

Eric Weinberg, a television writer and producer for shows like “Scrubs” and “Californication” who was arrested in July for “multiple” reports of sexual assaults, is accused by more than two dozen women — many speaking on the record — of luring them to his family home, where he brazenly sexually assaulted them, according to The Hollywood Reporter in a story published Thursday.
The exhaustive report details Weinberg’s pattern of approaching young women in public places, using his Hollywood credentials — along with scripted flattery and calculated assurances — to gain their trust and interest. Once at his home, Weinberg was repeatedly described as becoming immediately sexually and physically aggressive, pushing past spoken boundaries and often taking graphic pictures as he carried out the assaults.
There is evidence Weinberg has been engaged in this pattern for more than 20 years, and investigators suggest that the victims could number in the hundreds. THR said it spoke...

The court date of Scrubs writer and co-executive producer Eric Weinberg, who was arrested in July on sexual assault charges, has been postponed, according to the accusers involved in the case.
Weinberg, who was previously arrested on suspicion of rape in 2014, was scheduled to be arraigned Friday, Aug. 12, at which point the District Attorney’s office would present the charges against him and he would enter a plea.
The Deputy District Attorney (Dda) reviewing the case, Marlene Martinez, informed the accusers Thursday that her office would need more time to review a sudden and large influx of evidence delivered by detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department.
Officers with the LAPD arrested Weinberg on July 14 at his Los Feliz home. According to an arrest report, Weinberg allegedly assaulted multiple women from 2012 to 2019, though investigators suspect victims as far back as the ‘90s. The...

Everything old is new again!
It's been 30 years since Scott Bakula's Samuel Beckett bounced through time to pivotal moments in history to right what had gone wrong wherever he landed.
Now, a new team will get in on that action.
The sequel comes from Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, with Steven Lilien, Bryan Wynbrandt, Don Bellisario, Deborah Pratt, and Martin Gero producing.
That's a nice pedigree working behind the scenes to bring the show into the light again.
Bellisario created Quantum Leap and a load of other successful shows, including Airwolf, Magnum, P.I., Jag, and NCIS.
Magnum P.I. has already been rebooted successfully, so we know Bellisario isn't stuck in the past, unable to breathe new life into his previous work.
Lilien and Wyndbrandt created God Friended me and have written for or produced series such as Hawaii Five-0, Gotham, and La Brea.

Bill Maher continues to insist that his politics haven’t changed — but the landscape is shifting beneath his feet so fast that the prolific GOP-bashing host of HBO’s “Real Time” suggested on Joe Rogan’s podcast this week that even he may have a tipping point to cross over to the Republican Party.
Maher, the staunch liberal who ushered politics into late night with “Politically Incorrect” and now “Real Time” on HBO, has had taken many sojourns into centrist and center-right thinking of late. He and Rogan likened their mutual centrism to a rare form of “common sense” on the “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast that debuted Tuesday.
Maher suggested that runaway government spending — and the grift that comes along with it — just might be the thing that changes his stripes. Rogan and Maher began by riffing on the enormous spending packages the federal government has floated of late, including...

HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” will be off again this week as the show continues its safety protocols following the host’s Covid-19 diagnosis.
Maher revealed last week that he’d tested positive for the coronavirus during the show’s routine testing process. It was expected he’d need to take at least two weeks off before returning to the program.
Maher, who is vaccinated and asymptomatic, is now slated to return to his HBO slot on May 28. Instead of running a new “Real Time” episode this week, HBO is filling the slot with an encore of the fifth episode of “Mare of Eastown.”
Asymptomatic carriers of the coronavirus can still pass it on to other people in close quarters. One of the dangers of being an asymptomatic carrier is the person with the virus often doesn’t realize they have it until they’re tested, and by then,...

Bill Maher responded to an effort to get his show taken off the air as payback for the cancellation of “Roseanne” earlier in the week — with a segment he calls “explaining jokes to idiots.”
ABC canceled “Roseanne” after star Roseanne Barr compared former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett to the apes from “Planet of the Apes.” She later apologized.
But some conservative social media users, noting that Maher once compared Donald Trump to an orangutan, claimed that a double standard was at play and called for HBO to cancel “Real Time.”

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Ozark” Season 1. A spoiler-free review is available here.]
Now that’s how you make a thriller.
Anyone burned by the slow stroll to nowhere of recent Netflix dramas had to be pleased with the pins-and-needles tension — and shocking payoffs — of “Ozark,” Jason Bateman’s new original series for the streaming giant. From the first episode to the ending, Season 1 was filled with shocking twists and intense familial strife.
Below, we’ll break down why the near-constant darkness always felt grounded in reality, using big developments in the plot and key scenes throughout the series to illustrate how a horror story still felt relatable — and all the more terrifying for it.

Premiere – “Sugarwood”
The importance of the premiere episode was its power. While that may go without saying, given the first hour’s overall impact, it’s important to remember how many dramas start slow.

Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles screens this Friday and Saturday nights (July 7th and 8th) at midnight at the Tivoli Theater as part of their ‘Reel Late at the Tivoli’ Midnight series.
I showed the condensed Super-8 version of Blazing Saddles, appropriately enough, at my Super-8 Politically Incorrect Movie Madness show a few years ago at The Way Out Club and there are enough N-words in the 18-minute edit alone to make Paula Dean blush, but damn, this movie just keeps getting funnier as it ages!
Blazing Saddles is my favorite Mel Brooks comedy. Yes, even more than Young Frankenstein – it’s hard to believe Brooks produced both yuk-fests the same year. I just watched his 1977 follow-up High Anxiety on 16mm last weekend for the first time since it was new and Yikes! – I see why it was a critical disaster – didn’t laugh once!

John Goodman and Bruce Willis have been friends since 1979, but somehow never worked together before “Once Upon a Time in Venice,” the action-comedy that hits theaters and video-on-demand on Friday, June 16. The directorial debut of writer-producer Mark Cullen, “Once Upon a Time in Venice” stars Willis as a Venice Beach P.I. who teams up with his surf shop-owner best friend (Goodman) to track down a drug dealer’s stolen cocaine. The film co-stars Jason Momoa, Famke Janssen, Thomas Middleditch and Adam Goldberg.

Bill Maher wasted no time tackling the elephant in the room on Friday’s Real Time.
Quick refresh: Maher incurred widespread wrath last week when, midway through his Real Time interview with junior senator Ben Sasse, he uttered the N-word. (Watch video of the gaffe by clicking here.) The following morning, HBO released a strongly worded statement condemning the former Politically Incorrect host’s crack, which was soon followed by Maher’s own mea culpa.

[[tmz:video id="0_ue4gel26"]] Bill Maher has history with the n-word, but doesn't understand the history behind the word ... according to Anne-Marie Johnson. The actress tells us she wasn't surprised when Maher got blasted for saying the n-word on 'Real Time' ... because she was front and center when he did the same thing 16 years ago. Johnson says the problem is Maher's not getting the message from black people that the word causes pain ... and she doesn't think he ever will.

Comedian Bill Maher has made a career of saying controversial things, both on his former ABC show “Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher” and on his HBO show “Real Time with Bill Maher.” Though Maher prides himself on being politically incorrect, there have been plenty of times he’s said offensive things that got him into hot water. To read The National Review’s “Politically Incorrect Guide Memorial Day Movies” is one of those moments where you seriously wonder if conservatism in the Trump Era isn’t just one big episode of “Punk’d.” Written by Arthur Herman, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, the list was an attempt to highlight war movies for conservatives to watch on Memorial Day – many of which are fantastic – but are bizarrely packaged and advertised as movies that will piss off liberals.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Archer Dreamland,” Season 8, Episode 1, “No Good Deed.”]
Those waiting to find out the fate of Sterling Archer will have to wait a little longer. Following last season’s cliffhanger ending where Archer, shot and bleeding, passed out in Lana’s arms, Season 8 picks up with a bait-and-switch. The tombstone the entire cast huddles around isn’t Archer’s, but Woodhouse’s. Archer is alive, but he’s been in a coma for the last three months — and he may never come out of it.
He could wake up “tomorrow, could be another three months, could be…” Mallory trails off. “There’s no telling what he knows, or what he’s thinking about. Well, dreaming about, I suppose.”
And with that, we enter “Dreamland.”
As mentioned in our season review, the primary concern with the set-up for Season 8 was whether or not “Dreamland” could prove relevant and/or entertaining enough to distract us from Archer’s life or death state.

On Friday's Real Time, Bill Maher welcomed his "friend" Kellyanne Conway, the conservative pollster whose star has risen from appearances on Maher's Politically Incorrect in 1996 to the title of Donald Trump's campaign manager. "Now you're perhaps the most important person in the world, because you seem to be the only person who's been able to tame Donald Trump," Maher told Conway. "Many have tried, but only you were able to pull that sword from the stone.

The already-incredible line-up for the 2016 New York Film Festival just got even more promising. Ang Lee‘s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk will hold its world premiere at the festival on October 14th, the NY Times confirmed today. The adaptation of Ben Fountain‘s Iraq War novel, with a script by Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire), follows a teenage soldier who survives a battle in Iraq and then is brought home for a victory lap before returning.
Lee has shot the film at 120 frames per second in 4K and native 3D, giving it unprecedented clarity for a feature film, which also means the screening will be held in a relatively small 300-seat theater at AMC Lincoln Square, one of the few with the technology to present it that way. While it’s expected that this Lincoln Square theater will play the film when it arrives in theaters, it may be...

After further investigation, FX has decided to renew Archer for three more seasons, but the animated spy comedy will be a little different than viewers are used to. The network announced today that the series has been picked up through Season 10. However, this time around seasons will only last for eight episodes. Previously, the show had been made up of 13 episodes each year except Season 1 and Season 7. Those were both ten episodes each. The renewal of Archer, which stars H. Jon Benjamin and Aisha Tyler, was far from certain considering the show had been lagging in the ratings. The most recent season saw average viewership drop to 781,000 viewers, a far cry from Season 4, when it averaged 1.38 million viewers. Regardless of this dive, FX appears to remain excited about the show. “The move to Los Angeles this past season as private detectives was just the latest twist in Archer’s legendary...

57 years ago today, Disney’s Sleeping Beauty premiered at the Fox Wilshire Theater in Los Angeles. It was the last film based on a fairy tale that the House of Mouse made for over 30 years, until 1989’s The Little Mermaid, since Sleeping Beauty underperformed at the box office, leading to massive layoffs at Disney. The successful release of 101 Dalmatians in 1961 ended up saving Disney Animation. Though Sleeping Beauty wasn’t a hit at its debut, the film’s become a beloved Disney classic, with Aurora in her pink dress (you win, Flora) prominent among the lineup of Disney princesses, and with Maleficent now an iconic animated villain. Maleficent got her own movie starring Angelina Jolie in 2014. Other notable January 29 happenings in pop culture history: • 1845: Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven was first published in the New York Evening Mirror. • 1942: BBC Radio first aired “Desert Island Discs.” Still on the air today,...

Writer/director Alan Rudolph is still inextricably linked to Robert Altman, his mentor and eventual producer for several of Rudolph’s own features. Having served as assistant director on Altman’s The Long Goodbye and Nashville, Rudolph would eventually steer his own considerable, idiosyncratic filmography. But without any significant mainstream efforts to explode him into the fabric of the cultural zeitgeist, many of his works faded quickly into obscurity, particularly if they weren’t well-received by critics. Often featuring delectable roles for offbeat female leads (including some unforgettable roles for Genevieve Bujold, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Geraldine Chaplin), a late 90s Oscar nod for Julie Christie in Afterfglow (1997) resuscitated interest in the auteur. But the decade started out on a disappointing note for Rudolph with 1990’s Love at Large, the follow-up to critically acclaimed The Moderns (1980). Featuring a cascading array of notable actors, it’s an offbeat endeavor, to say the least,...

I interviewed Takeshi Kitano, aka "Beat" Takeshi, in spring of 2001 regarding "Brother," his first film shot on American soil. Kitano is arguably, still, the biggest star in Japan, one whose influence crosscuts virtually all areas of media.
Memories: Kitano was surrounded by a small entourage of Japanese men, one of whom was his interpreter. He was formal and stoic in his interaction with me, but never unfriendly. As Sofia Coppola so deftly portrayed in "Lost in Translation," the English to Japanese process of translating can often be time-consuming for what amounts to seemingly little that's been said. Kitano rarely made eye contact or smiled, although when he would laugh softly, a crooked grin would form on one side of his mouth, the right. The other striking thing about Kitano's appearance was a tic, or slight tremor, that would appear on the left side of his face, the after-effect of a...
