Eddie Murphy is back with a badge for the fourth franchise installment of his beloved series, with “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.”
The upcoming Netflix film, which teased a first look earlier this year, marks Murphy’s long-rumored reprisal the iconic character Detective Axel Foley. The ’80s-era franchise first began with Foley as a Detroit detective turned temporary L.A. police officer for an uncover mission. Now, after having worked in L.A. sporadically for decades, Foley teams up with his estranged daughter Jane (Taylour Paige) to take down yet another conspiracy.
Along the way, Foley lands a new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and police captain (Kevin Bacon), but his old confidantes, including Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton), are still in the mix. Also returning? Franchise co-stars Paul Reiser and Bronson Pinchot.

"This isn't my first time in Beverly Hills..." Ready for a good time in Beverly Hills? Netflix has dropped the full official trailer for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the long-awaited next new sequel in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise – which last ended decades ago in 1994 with Beverly Hills Cop III directed by John Landis. This smashing new follow-up (BHC4!) picks up right where things left off with Axel Foley as he returns to his old stomping grounds in SoCal for more mayhem. When his daughter is threatened, he is drawn back to the many opulent environs of Beverly Hills to investigate the untimely demise of a long-time confidant. She & Foley team up with a new partner to turn up the heat & uncover a conspiracy. Eddie Murphy is back as Foley for the fourth time, after first taking on the role in the 1984 comedy classic. The new cast also includes...

"The Godfather Part III," "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," "Jaws 3-D," "Superman III" ... there are tons of examples of film trilogies that feature a dramatic drop in quality in their third entries. "Beverly Hills Cop III" definitely belongs on that list; the 1994 stinker, directed by John Landis, plopped Eddie Murphy's beloved fish-out-of-water Detroit cop character Axel Foley back in Beverly Hills, but this time, it takes place largely in a ... theme park. Thanks to scripting issues and scheduling problems, the film also broke up the beloved trio of Murphy, John Ashton, and Judge Reinhold, the latter of whom play Taggart and Rosewood, the Beverly Hills police officers who go from being Axel's pesky babysitters in the first movie to lifelong pals and de facto partners in the second. Ashton dodged a bullet by not appearing in the third film at all, and that movie's lousy script didn't do...

Intro: The heat is back on for a third time in this episode of Revisited, but after huge success with the first two installments, can lightning strike a third time in the massively popular Beverly Hills Cop series? Of course it can. I mean, the formulas there, the main star of the franchise is back and the poster has a kick-ass rollercoaster on it, which is pretty edgy…If you’re a ten year old. So, naturally, nothing could go wrong.
Well, look, the franchise has legs, with part four in post production at the time of writing this episode, and Netflix looking at a summer release for the movie. It’s a popular modern trend in Tinseltown, where legacy characters, or franchises, are being resurrected for final outings, or a continuation of the mythology to keep modern audiences interested in a known and historically lucrative IP. Indy may have...

If you’re a long-term Eddie Murphy fan, chances are there’s no character of his that you love more than Axel Foley. His Beverly Hills cop is an iconic comedy character, sticking a banana in the tailpipe of your regular strait-laced law enforcement. And this summer, we’ll see Murphy reprising the role in the long-awaited fourth outing, 30 years after the (not-so-beloved) Beverly Hills Cop 3. While the specific release details were being kept under wraps by Netflix, where the film will find its home, they’ve since unveiled an official arrival date for you to mark in your diary.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F – as the fourth instalment is officially known – will arrive in your homes on 3 July, making it a proper summer tentpole for the streamer. The news came accompanied by a fresh image from the movie:

As Hollywood neared the midpoint of the 1980s, the industry had abandoned the risk-taking ethos of the 1970s and unabashedly embraced formula filmmaking. Stars still mattered, but the pitch was king. Studio executives keen on becoming their generation's Jack Warner, Daryl Zanuck and Louis B. Mayer were through humoring unpredictable auteurs like Martin Scorsese and Hal Ashby. They wanted can't-miss high-concept projects powered by high-wattage stars that could play for months on end in theaters because, despite the skyrocketing value of home video and pay cable channels, theatrical was still king.
"Beverly Hills Cop" traversed a rocky path from inception to production, but producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer doggedly developed and re-developed the project until they paired a 23-year-old comedy superstar with a once-hot director who'd two years prior gotten himself fired off "WarGames." Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley adventures are coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, as Beverly Hills Cop III gets announced for the format.
2024 is the year that the long-mooted fourth film in the Beverly Hills Cop series finally happens, with Netflix bringing Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F to our screens later this year.
It’s the first time that Eddie Murphy has taken on the lead role since 1994’s ill-fated Beverly Hills Cop III, a film that brought the saga to a shuddering stop when it stumbled at the box office. But still: there’s a chance to reassess that third film now, as Paramount is releasing it on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format.

Eddie Murphy reprises another one of his beloved roles!
It has been nearly 30 years since Beverly Hills Cop III and the 62-year-old actor and comedian is back as Axel Foley for the upcoming fourth installment, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which will be debuting on Netflix.
“Eddie‘s such an incredible artist. He can do drama, he can do comedy – he can do anything. And he’s the same Axel Foley. He’s still on the streets. He’s still doing what he does. Obviously with age you get wiser. But he still has the twinkle in his eye,” producer Jerry Bruckheimer shared in a statement.

The heat is back on next summer. Eddie Murphy can currently be seen in the new hit Christmas comedy on Prime Video, Candy Cane Lane. The family-friendly film reunites him with his Boomerang director, Reginald Hudlin. Next year, Murphy will be reuniting with Jerry Bruckheimer, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser and Bronson Pinchot for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. While 48 Hrs. landed Murphy in Hollywood as an instant star, 1984’s Beverly Hills Cop catapulted him into the stratosphere as an A-list action-comedy star. After 1994’s Beverly Hills Cop III was not received well by fans, development for a fourth was in the works for a while, and it is now about to hit screens. Netflix has unveiled new plot details and a teaser poster for the new Axel Foley adventure.

When we last hung out with Eddie Murphy's Axel Foley, he was wreaking havoc at a fictional Southern California amusement park (clearly based on Disneyland) while trying to apprehend the facility's chief of security, who murdered Foley's ill-tempered mentor, Inspector Todd (Gil Hill). If you're saying, "Uh, no, he was chasing the Eurotrash criminals who shot up his buddy Chief Bogomil (Ronny Cox)," you are one of the vast majority of moviegoers who skipped John Landis' "Beverly Hills Cop III."
Released over Memorial Day weekend in 1994, Murphy's third go-round as the fast-talking Detroit detective who keeps making unwelcome visits to Los Angeles to avenge dead or badly wounded friends arrived seven years after the last installment, and audiences had moved on. Whereas the first two movies grossed $316 million and $300 million worldwide (the bulk of that money being made in the U.S.), "Beverly Hills Cop III" only...

Surprise! Legendary director Barbet Schroeder, in Locarno to introduce his latest doc “Ricardo and Painting,” was greeted with a Special Tribute Award before the screening.
“Is this for the film?” Shroeder, a modest man, asked on stage. “No,” said Locarno festival director Giona Nazzaro. “It’s for being Barbet Schroeder.”
Despite focusing on harsher subjects in his previous documentaries, “General Idi Amin Dada: A Self Portrait,” “Terror’s Advocate” or “The Venerable W.,” this time Schroeder decided to follow painter Ricardo Cavallo.

Quentin Tarantino has floated around ideas for franchises like James Bond and Star Trek. It turns out, according to Eddie Murphy himself, he also might have wanted in on Murphy’s Beverly Hills Cop series.

Murphy had been mulling over the possibility of a Beverly Hills Cop sequel for years. The series’ last film, 1994’s Beverly Hills Cop III, was one that many felt wasn’t the franchise at its best. Murphy agreed, which gave the comedian extra motivation to see a proper sequel to the third movie.
“I don’t think it’s gonna happen in March, but it is gonna be in Detroit. And before it happens, they’ve got to get that script right. That movie has to be right,” he once said in an interview with the Playboy (via Av Club). “The third Beverly Hills Cop was garbage.

Speed is one of the more iconic action movies of the 90s. The movie was a huge success at the box office, grossing over $350 million worldwide and cementing Keanu Reeves as an action star. However, that success didn’t come easy. Speed was once set up at Paramount before the studio wound up passing on the project… but not before former Paramount VP of Production Don Granger pitched Speed as a Beverly Hills Cop sequel.
Don Granger made an appearance on the 50 Mph Podcast, where he revealed that Speed was considered as a Beverly Hills Cop sequel for all of fifteen minutes. “I really wanted to try to mount the movie, and my last-ditch effort was I pitched it at our chairman’s lunch as a possible script for Beverly Hills Cop 3,” Granger said. “I got about 15 minutes of traction before it was dismissed, because that was back when...

The “Beverly Hills Cop” franchise almost steered “Speed” away from audiences.
The Eddie Murphy comedy-action vehicle was once briefly on the brink of taking over the “Speed” script before Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock were attached to star, according to former Paramount vice president of production Don Granger.
During Kris Tapley’s latest episode of the “50 Mph” podcast, which offers a comprehensive oral history of “Speed,” Granger revealed that stalled negotiations for “Speed” led him to pitch the screenplay as a “Beverly Hills Cop III” script.

A few years ago, director Oliver Harper made a documentary called In Search of the Last Action Heroes, which was described as “a comprehensive retrospective of the ’80s and ’90s action film genre.” One of the people interviewed for that documentary was screenwriter Steven E. de Souza, who was a major contributor to the action genre in those decades, working on the likes of 48 Hrs., Commando, The Running Man, Die Hard, Die Hard 2, Hudson Hawk, Ricochet, Beverly Hills Cop III, and Street Fighter, among others… with one of the others being the much-maligned Sylvester Stallone comic book movie Judge Dredd. In a moment that didn’t make it into the final cut of In Search of the Last Action Heroes, de Souza discussed the issues that Judge Dredd ran into, including bad marketing and a struggle to secure an R rating. Harper has been kind enough to share that deleted scene online,...

Eddie Murphy turned 61 years old this year, which makes him roughly the same age John Wayne was when he played the out-to-pasture codger Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit." That film, and Wayne's subsequent Westerns, had an elegiac, one-last-ride feeling to them. Yes, the Duke's cancer was in remission at this point, but he still looked washed. When he finally succumbed to the disease on the eve of the 1980s, the book quietly closed on an outmoded era of Hollywood filmmaking. It was time. Of all the golden age stars, Wayne was uniquely unsuited to the coked-up, strip-club glitz pioneered by producing teams like Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer and Jon Peters/Peter Guber.
Of all the big-screen '80s superstars, no one was more at home in this olio of excess than Eddie Murphy. His fast-talking, nimble-minded riffing was perfectly attuned to the hurtling energy of the decade's blockbuster action-comedies. Murphy...

Eddie Murphy is reuniting with his original “Beverly Hills Cop” co-stars — Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser and Bronson Pinchot — for the upcoming sequel, “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley.”
Netflix picked up the rights in 2019 to release the next “Beverly Hills Cop” movie, which is currently in production.
“Axel Foley” is the fourth installment in the hit action-comedy franchise, following 1984’s “Beverly Hills Cop,” 1987’s “Beverly Hills Cop II” and 1994’s “Beverly Hills Cop III.” For the fourquel, producers opted to ditch the roman numerals and instead name the film after Murphy’s fish-out-of-water character, a Detroit police officer who travels to Los Angeles to investigate crimes.
Plot details for “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley” have been kept under wraps. Presumably, the story involves Axel Foley is returning to the 90210 to crack a new case.

We're heading back to the ritziest part of Los Angeles in the upcoming film "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley," the long-awaited fourth entry in the "Beverly Hills Cop" franchise. The first one came out in 1984, starring Eddie Murphy as a police officer who heads to Beverly Hills to solve the murder of his best friend. It spawned two sequels; "Beverly Hills Cop II" in 1987 and "Beverly Hills Cop III" in 1994.
Also starring in the film was Paul Reiser, who played the character of Jeffrey. Though Reiser didn't make it into the third film, he'll be back for the fourth, along with Murphy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Taylour Paige, James Preston Rogers, and James Aviel.
Reiser is also starring in the new sitcom "Reboot," about the cast of an early 2000s sitcom that is getting rebooted with the original actors. The new series premiered on September 20, 2022, with its first three episodes. /Film's own...

Eddie Murphy was the surest of bets in the 1980s. At the age of 19, he single-handedly yanked "Saturday Night Live" back from the brink of cancellation after the departure of the original cast, and was all of 21 when he shot to big-screen stardom opposite Nick Nolte in Walter Hill's action-comedy classic, "48 Hrs." His second feature, "Trading Places," was also a critical and commercial hit, while his stand-up LP "Eddie Murphy: Comedian" went platinum. By 1984, Murphy was so hot, Paramount inserted him into the finished Dudley Moore comedy "Best Defense" in the hopes that he could enliven the deathly unfunny film with his ad-libbed brilliance. It didn't work, but no one held it against Murphy. The movie was just that bad.
There was no question that Murphy had turned into one of Hollywood's biggest stars overnight, but his first two hits had been two-handers. He had yet to carry a film on his own.

A year after Eddie Murphy revived one of his classic roles in "Coming 2 America," the actor is officially set to bring the world of "Beverly Hills Cop" back from the dead. "Beverly Hills Cop 4" has been in development for several years, but there finally seems to be some momentum on the project, as Deadline reports it now has a name –- "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley" –- and a supporting cast. "Zola" breakout star Taylour Paige will join Murphy in the new film, as will "Super Pumped" star Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
The "Beverly Hills Cop" franchise was initially a massive moneymaker, as its first installment made over 300 million at the worldwide box office in 1984 and showed that audiences had a taste for R-rated entertainment and Murphy's uproarious brand of comedy. The controversial and contentious experiment where Warner Bros. has debuted its 2021 slate of feature films on HBO Max will hit a crescendo in October thanks to the releases of “The Many Saints of Newark” and “Dune” on the streaming platform. It’s safe to assume that Eddie Murphy has always worshipped at the altar of “Dolemite” mastermind Rudy Ray Moore, as the lewd, brash, and infectiously self-possessed blaxploitation icon blazed the trail that Murphy later followed to his own fame. At the very least, Moore’s foul-mouthed comedy records (e.g. “Eat Out More Often”) and his total disregard for white audiences helped light the way forward. But Murphy, who was a Hollywood-minted star by the time he was 25, probably never thought he would relate to Moore’s hardscrabble career quite as much as he has in recent years.
