“Fargo” is more than a place; it’s a Midwest state of mind. Mention as much to Carrie Coon, a Midwesterner from the eastern end of the region (Ohio) now living in its heart (Illinois), and she’ll rattle off an impressive list of accurate ideological descriptors.
“The ethos of that place,” she said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “That particular brand of stoicism and emotional restraint; the belief that bad things won’t happen to good people and that you have some control; this idea that we can make meanings in our lives, even though the reality is that we have very little control over anything.”

The minks awaiting their fate at the Lang Farms fur farm near Eden Valley, Minnesota, have been given a surprising second chance.
According to Wcco, an animal rights activist or group of activists freed close to 40,000 minks at the farm into the wilds of central Minnesota.
The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office said the mass jailbreak occurred on Monday night and that the suspects dismantled the fence surrounding the area where the animals were kept and then opened all of the mink cages.
Lang Farms believes anywhere between 30,000 to 40,000 minks are now traipsing across the Midwest state, an estimated $750,000 loss for the farm.

In traditional Hollywood Westerns or TV crime dramas, the sheriff, the marshal, or the local police are depicted as the unassailable line between good and evil, a safe zone if you will. Regardless of the type or scale of danger, you could always feel secure standing behind a lawman... although maybe not directly behind them, because bullets will inevitably fly. Not so on Fargo; creator Noah Hawley seems to hold the police (as an institution) in contempt -- he portrays the law as consistently corrupt, weak, or incompetent to varying degrees.
Interestingly, each season of Fargo also focuses upon a lone, incorruptible officer who won't back off, who faces down fear, and who (maybe) restores sanity to otherwise insane circumstances. Gloria (Carrie Coon) is willing to throw her career in the can -- on Christmas Eve, no less -- to see her case through. She conspires with perhaps the only other honest cop,...

Season 3 of Fargo has been sitting on simmer for a few weeks now, but it heated up to a full boil this week — and ah jeez, a main character wound up dead.
Ray is still fuming after Nikki’s savage beating at the hands of Yuri and Meemo. He grabs his gun, and they tail the two henchmen to an empty lot, where they spot V.M. Varga being ushered into a car. Nikki theorizes he’s the “head honcho,” and Ray’s ready to go after them, guns blazing.

As we approach the halfway point of Fargo Season 3 (already?), it's might be useful to pause and consider what we've learned... if anything. The players are all positioned on the board, but the master plot remains opaque. Sure, there are three parallel stories, which will eventually dovetail, but the mystery isn't really who killed, stole, lied, or died; instead, the real question is: who's got control and what do they want to achieve?
This episode opens on the mundane (a hallmark of Fargo), just another typical morning with the central cast, set to the orchestral backdrop of Peter and the Wolf -- that classical old fable from everyone's youth, which recounts the bravery of a boy and the harsh lessons of nature. Interestingly, Peter and the Wolf is also a Russian tale about hunter and prey, which obviously mirrors the events in Fargo. Russians, it seems, have regained their standing...

Things started to unravel in a hurry for both Stussy boys this week on Fargo, while Gloria got a new clue in Ennis’ murder — and a new friend!
Ray’s latest get-rich scheme is to impersonate his brother Emmit, shaving his mustache and putting on a curly wig to go down to Emmit’s bank and open that safe-deposit box. “Emmit” tells the bank manager he lost his key, and when he threatens to take his money elsewhere, the manager scrambles to get the box opened with a drill.

Oh, we're going be awhile unpacking this one. Just what in the frozen Minnesota hell happened last night? A swerve. In the third episode of Fargo Season 3, we got a swerve. Eden Valley's ex-chief of police Gloria Burgle (Carrie Coon) heads to Los Angeles to continue looking into the murder of her stepfather Ennis Stussy (Scott Hylands), or should we say Thaddeus Mobley.
But Stussy's death was an open and shut case, right? Maybe not. His assumed killer was Ray's halfwit parolee, Maurice LeFay (Scoot McNairy -- a Fargo-ish name is there ever was one). The police even found LeFay's fingerprints at the scene. And yet, the circumstances of Ennis's killing still seemed off somehow. For example, why did LeFay glue Ennis' mouth and nose shut just to steal some stamps? It's an odd way to kill a man (I presume), and rather too severe -- even for Fargo.

In a seedy Hollywood motel room, Minnesota cop Gloria Burgle looks behind a curtain and finds a box, with a unlabeled switch on the top. She flicks it on. A light turns green, and the lid opens just slightly. A robotic hand comes out, moves the switch to the off position, then retreats as the light turns red. This is all the device does.
This week's Fargo episode, blessed with the superb title "The Law of Non-Contradiction," is all about unpacking what this box means. A mere three weeks into its third season,...

For three seasons now, Fargo's heroes and villains have shared the same exaggerated upper Midwestern accent, all clipped consonants, elongated vowels and pleasant cadence. Listen closely, however, and you can hear how the show's creator Noah Hawley has borrowed as much from David Mamet as the Coen brothers, in the way that he has his cast sputter out sentences riddled with incomplete thoughts. So it's a credit to the writing and the acting that although the players are clearly speaking the same stop-start language, they're easily distinguishable – especially when played by the same actor.

The joy of each new season of Fargo is piecing together just what in the hell is actually going on, while all of the key players stumble to their starting positions. Getting your bearings in this show is equal parts fun and frustrating, as the plot has no real intention of revealing itself, and yet there's so much crazy going on that it doesn't much matter anyway. Fargo is all about the journey, and since the destination will undoubtedly be vicious and brutal, it's best to enjoy the fun parts of the ride while you can.

Quick question: At any given point during the first five minutes of Fargo's Season Three premiere – "The Law of Vacant Places" – did anybody else worry that FX was accidentally airing the wrong show?
After a trippy opening shot looks like a leftover from Noah Hawley's other FX runaway-hit show Legion, we're dropped into East Berlin circa 1988, for a scene that could easily be an outtake from The Americans (albeit with more deadpan comedy and less espionage). For a little while, we're about as far from Minnesota as we can get.

Noah Hawley is a genius. With two seasons of Fargo under his belt — not to mention the just-finished, all-awesome Legion — the showrunner is one of the few currently working in TV whose style and tone feels unique, refreshing, and incredibly artful when compared to his peers. His shows have a penchant for the bizarre and plots that unfold in unorthodox ways, leading to arcs that don’t just sit there and tell you everything. They dare you; they test you; they oppose you more than some might enjoy; they challenge you.
That challenge returns with a cold snap in Fargo‘s third season. The show, which feels even more disconnected than ever from the previous seasons and original Coen Brothers film, is a minor miracle in tension building and storytelling. Or so it has been for nearly three years; with only the premiere sent out for review,...

FX has released three brand new promos for the upcoming third season of Noah Hawley's Coen Brothers-inspired crime drama Fargo. While the last batch included our first good look at Ewan McGregor's flunky parole officer character Ray Stussy, this one gives us our first glimpse at the slicker Emmit Stussy, Ray's twin brother (also played by Ewan McGregor). Emmit is the "Parking Lot King of Minnesota," and is far more successful than his brother. He also appears to be a stamp enthusiast.

It feels like it's been forever since season two of Noah Hawley's Coen Brothers-inspired TV series Fargo wrapped up on FX, but we're just a little more than a month away from a brand new season. Season three will see a shift in setting closer to the first season of the show instead of the '70s setting of season two, and after seeing a couple of quick promos a few days ago, we now have the first promo that includes a look at three of this season's stars: Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Carrie Coon.

Hot on the heels of last Friday's news that 10 Cloverfield Lane star Mary Elizabeth Winstead has joined the cast of FX's spectacular crime series Fargo for the show's third season, we have another addition to the already-stacked group of actors. Fargo has already managed to break the television mold in a variety of ways, and perhaps the most important is that the second season lived up to the first.
Going for three might be pushing your luck, but the cast is rounding out nicely.
Ewan McGregor and Carrie Coon (Gone Girl, The Leftovers) have already been attached, and now Mary Elizabeth Winstead joins them. Winstead, recently of 10 Cloverfield Lane and Brain Dead, will play Nikki Swango, a recent parolee who is decidedly focused on competitive bridge. This already gives us a clue to this season’s connections, as Ewan McGregor plays brothers, one of whom is a parole officer.
Winstead seems a solid choice for the series, given her demonstrated delivery in both of her most recent efforts, and the reveal of her character offers even more reason to believe this one could hold up as well.
Check out all the info below,...

Noah Hawley's Fargo is one of my favorite shows on television, and I think Mary Elizabeth Winstead is one of the most underrated actresses of her generation, so I was thrilled to hear that she's been cast in the upcoming third season of the FX drama. From EW:
Winstead will play “Nikki Swango,” a “crafty and alluring recent parolee with a passion for competitive bridge playing. Nikki is a woman with a plan, focused on always being at least one move ahead of her opponents.”
THR says Winstead will be able to star in the show as long as filming doesn't conflict with a possible second season of her CBS political series BrainDead, but I think the prevailing wisdom is that BrainDead seems unlikely to secure a second season anyway, so she'll probably be good to go here. She joins Ewan McGregor and The Leftovers' Carrie Coon as...

What talent could possibly stand up to the likes of not just Ewan McGregor, but two Ewan McGregors? Carrie Coon, of course.
Noah Hawley and the fine folks behind “Fargo” came to the same conclusion today, setting the star of “The Leftovers” as the female lead of the anthology series’ third season. Coon will star opposite McGregor, according to a report by TVLine.

Coon is set to play Gloria Burgle (a name without the inherent poetry of Nora Durst, but oh so very “Fargo” nonetheless), a character described as “a practical woman who grabs the fire extinguisher when the bacon catches fire and everyone else panics.” A newly divorced mother, Burgle is also the chief of the Eden Valley Police.
It was announced previously that McGregor would be playing twin brothers Emmit and Ray Stussy.
