David Barrington Holt, who established and ran the first Creature Shop on the West Coast for The Jim Henson Company during his two-plus decades with the firm, has died. He was 78.
Holt died March 13 of complications from cancer at his home in Los Angeles, his son, Chris Holt, announced.
Holt started out with the Henson Co. in 1986 as deputy supervisor of its Creature Shop in the U.K. and was promoted to creative supervisor. He moved to Los Angeles in 1993 to set up a Creature Shop and produce the 1991-94 Disney-abc series Dinosaurs.
In L.A., Holt had creative oversight of shop operations including puppetry, animatronics, effects, performers, administrative matters and R&d, with developments in the field of real-time 3D CG animation.
He was instrumental in the creation of the Henson Performance Control System, which allowed a single performer to operate complex, computer-driven puppets in the same manner as though they were physical.

On paper, filmmaker Steven Spielberg and novelist Roald Dahl couldn't be more different. Spielberg has been known as a sentimental filmmaker, expertly presenting many heartwarming fables throughout his career. Thanks to films like "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," "Always," "Hook," and "War Horse," one can see the optimist in Spielberg shining through. His films tend to end well for their protagonists, and his little kid characters experience growth and wonderment, even as they survive mayhem. Yes, Spielberg could be intense and bitter at times, but he's hardly known for his cynicism. Roald Dahl, meanwhile, might be defined by his cynicism. In Dahl's children's stories, the world is a bleak and aggressive place, full of abusive adults and systems designed to exploit children. "Matilda" takes place at the world's most miserable school. "James and the Giant Peach" begins with the eponymous character being horrible abused by his two aunts. It's a...

When you’re a streaming service, there’s only one way to celebrate the New Year. And that’s by IP mining to bring back a franchise that had no business in coming back!
With its list of new releases for January 2022, Hulu is raiding CBS’s closet and premiering How I Met Your Father, a continuation of the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Complaints about unnecessary rebooting aside, perhaps its worth giving the Hillary Duff starring series a chance. If nothing else, telling a story about 2022 from a future perspective might play well.
Aside from Himyf, there aren’t any other Hulu original series to speak of. Instead, Hulu is opting to once again beef up its film library. January 1 sees the arrival of Master and Commander, Seven, and a whole bunch of Star Treks. Hulu will also be the streaming home of some recently released film Indies,...

If you were a kid during the 1990s then there is a very good chance you saw the 1995 movie The Indian in The Cupboard. The movie followed a young boy named Omri who is given an old wooden cupboard and a plastic figurine for his birthday. Although these both seem like ordinary objects, he quickly realizes that there’s more to them than they seem. When he puts the figuring in the cupboard, the toy comes to life. Although the film didn’t do well at the box office, it was popular among young viewers and it thrust the movie’s young

Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.
The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain. Oswalt’s Modok is every bit the devious floating head that he’s depicted as in the comics. He’s also your every day family man and the show will take on the format of a workplace sitcom. Sounds kinda fun! It’s no wonder that M.O.D.O.K. is the last Hulu Marvel show standing.
In non-Marvel offerings this month, Shrill will debut its third and final season on May 7. This comedy based on Lindy West’s memoir and starring SNL‘s Aidy Bryant has been a consistently bright presence on the streaming scene since...

Wait a minute. Are we somehow half way through the year already? That feels impossible but here comes month number five all the same. With its list of new releases for May 2021, Amazon Prime is highlighting some of its more intriguing original series in awhile.
The first original of note is The Underground Railroad. This series from Barry Jenkins tells the story of one woman’s desperate bid for freedom in the Antebellum South and arrives on May 14. After that comes Solos. This intriguing anthology has one hell of a cast including Anthony Mackie, Dan Stevens, Anne Hathaway, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Constance Wu, and more. The project will premiere on May 21 and each of its seven episodes promises to be quite different.

November is among the least respected months on the calendar. Falling between objectively the two best holidays, November is usually all about recovering from the spookies of Halloween while getting ready for the good vibes the holiday season. For its new releases of November 2020, Netflix has decided to just go ahead and get Christmas over with.
Netflix has already released a list of all its holiday offerings for November and December, and it’s those holiday offerings that take the most prominence this month. The biggest project of all of these is undoubtedly The Christmas Chronicles 2, which premieres on Nov. 25. In this holiday sequel, Kurt Russell reprises his role as Hot Santa Claus who must save the season once again.
On the non-holiday side of things, Netflix’s Emmy-winning series The Crown returns for season 4 on Nov. 15. And speaking of things that desperately want to win awards, Ron Howard...

We might be stuck indoors this Halloween weekend, but thankfully, the various major streaming services are on hand to keep us occupied with a monumental mountain of new content heading our way over the next few days. As it’s both the end of the month and the beginning of November, the likes of Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Hulu and Prime Video are adding a mix of seasonal movies and TV shows today and tomorrow, and a whole load of freshly licensed titles on Sunday.
First of all, Netflix is dropping five new originals this Friday, October 30th, including a couple of horrors, like The Day of the Lord and His House. Disney Plus, meanwhile, debuts The Mandalorian‘s season 2 premiere today, along with a new episode of The Right Stuff and Nicolas Cage movie The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. November will bring about a brand new month, and that means that we’re losing a bunch of content on Netflix and gaining some fresh stuff in return. You can rest easy knowing that you’re all set for a ton of great new movies and shows throughout the coming weeks, and the 1st, in particular, will be adding quite a collection, including heavy hitters like the ensemble heist flick Ocean’s Eleven, Jim Carrey comedy Yes Man, children’s classic The Indian in the Cupboard and the Keanu Reeves thriller Knock Knock.
And although all of those films – and plenty others set to arrive on the 1st – are worth adding to your list right away, there’s an underrated action pic that you might want to check out, too. Of course, that goes double if you’re a fan of Mark Wahlberg.

Netflix is adding a ton of great titles over the next seven days. From Monday to Sunday, the streaming giant is unleashing some new Halloween-related originals for you to dig into as we approach October 31st, while it’s an usually busy weekend for the site, too, as Sunday marks November 1st, meaning a load of newly licensed movies and shows are being added to Netflix’s library.
Unfortunately, they aren’t bringing us anything fresh on Monday or Thursday, but the rest of the week is well-stocked. As you can see below, Tuesday the 27th delivers three new originals. The highlight of that day’s haul, though, has to be Blood of Zeus, the much-anticipated anime-style series that’s adapting classic Greek myths. Jason O’Mara, Jessica Henwick and Claudia Christian star.

Though we’re now beginning to see life starting to return to at least some sense of normality, a lot of people are still spending much more time at home than usual thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic, and that probably won’t change for a while yet. As such, streaming services are more popular than ever now and thankfully, all of the major players have been delivering the goods when it comes to adding new content.
Of course, Netflix are still the leaders and each and every month they bring us a healthy helping of fresh material that ensures subscribers are kept entertained at all times. Admittedly, the summer was more fruitful in terms of new releases, but there are still a lot of great titles coming down the pipeline as we head into the fall and today, the streaming giant have revealed their November lineup, which you can check out below.

All eight Harry Potter movies are available for streaming on HBO Max, the WarnerMedia service that launched Wednesday in the U.S.
Released between 2001 and 2011, the films based on J.K. Rowling’s family-friendly series of books collectively grossed $7.7 billion for Warner Bros. Like other Warner titles, they had premium cable releases on HBO and in 2018 became available via the HBO Go and HBO Now streaming apps. (Go is for pay-tv subscribers to HBO and Now is a stand-alone version of HBO.) Digitally, they were available for rental and purchase but not via subscription streaming through a single outlet for non-hbo subscribers.
As was the case when Disney secured the Star Wars feature lineup for Disney+, WarnerMedia wanted to avoid any perception issue by herding all of the films into the HBO Max pen. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, a spinoff of the Potter films, will also be available on HBO Max.

Toys can often play an important role in a film, sometimes becoming the star. This is our list of the 20 most famous toys in film.
Toys and movies have a unique and long-running relationship. In the beginning, toys were just props in movies. Somewhere along the line, someone figured out that toys could be used to help sell movies, and vice versa. Merchandising began, and children everywhere could find either the toys featured in their favorite movies or toy versions of things from their favorite movies on the shelves of their local toy stores. Some toys also graduated from being props to being characters. First animation, then stop-motion, puppetry, and later CGI helped to bring them alive on screen. More recently, movie studios have begun making movies based on toys.

Throughout all of this, one thing has remained consistent: the important role that toys have played in film. However, there...

One Thing I Love Today is a daily column dedicated to putting a spotlight on some pop culture item worth your attention. After all, there's enough snark out there. Why not start every day with one quick shotgun blast of positivity? Roald Dahl’s work has made for some interesting big-screen adaptations over the years. By far the most beloved version of his work is the Gene Wilder iteration of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, due largely to the sheer charismatic supernova that is Gene Wilder in that film. I’ve had a real soft spot for The Witches since its early ‘90s release, and I think that Nic Roeg film gets the tone of Dahl’s work right in a big way. It is safe to say that I am crossing my fingers and hoping for the very best with Steven Spielberg’s The Bfg, and my optimism...

“Harry Potter” changed the movie industry. That may be obvious, but fourteen years since the first movie landed, it’s become much more clear. Before the first J.K. Rowling adaptation arrived in 2001, the idea of the Ya movie (that’s "young adult," meaning a movie based on literature aimed at teens or pre-teens, broadly speaking) wasn’t really a thing. Classic children's literature had been brought to the screen previously —“The Princess Bride” or “The Indian In The Cupboard,” to name but two— but such adaptations didn’t really become phenomenons and didn’t spawn sequels. But the enormous success of the Hogwarts adventures cinema (just as they did the publishing industry), and every development executive started chasing the next youthful-skewing, four-quadrant book series that they hoped could become a monster hit and lead to further monster hits. More mega-hits did arrive eventually, but in unlikely forms: a teen vampire...

Henry Selick to team with Key & Peele for new animated stop-motion film
It has been awhile since director Henry Selick made Coraline, one of the better animated films in years, and he has been looking to move on to a new project. While Disney and Laika have both passed on The Shadow King by Selick, it looks like a famous duo will help the director get his next project made.
According to Variety, Key & Peele are set to help create a new animated feature with Selick that will be called Wendell and Wild. The site adds that the project is in the early stages with the duo and Selick ironing out creative details while looking for a distributor at the moment.
Selick spoke about the project, telling Variety that:

Steven Spielberg directed the 1982 classic "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial," but he couldn't have brought the iconic character to life without screenwriter Melissa Mathison. Mathison died Wednesday, November 4 after an illness, her brother Dirk Mathison confirmed to Variety. She was 65.
In addition to her Oscar-nominated screenplay for "E.T." -- for which she also received an associate producer credit -- Mathison wrote scripts for "The Black Stallion," "The Escape Artist," "The Indian In The Cupboard," Martin Scorsese's "Kundun," and the upcoming Spielberg movie "The Bfg," which is in post-production.
Mathison was also married to actor Harrison Ford for more than 20 years, from 1983-2004, and they have two children together, Malcolm and Georgia.
Spielberg and "Kundun" producer Barbara De Fina both shared statements after Mathison's death.
"She was a lovely woman, and it's a great loss," De Fina told Deadline. "She was a wonderful writer. The project was about the Dalai Lama but...

Melissa Mathison, screenwriter of E.T., Kundun and next year's The Bfg, has died.
Some sad news.
Melissa Mathison, the screenwriter who penned E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, has died. She was just 65 years old. Her death comes following a long illness, and she is survived by her two children.
Mathison, throughout her career, was careful about picking and choosing her projects, and thus has a surprisingly small number of screenplays to her name. She penned, for instance, The Indian In The Cupboard's script, a section of Twilight Zone: The Movie, and Martin Scorsese' Kundun. She also worked on the English language translation of Studio Ghibli's Ponyo.
She'd also completed work on her first screenplay in nearly 20 years for Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Roald Dahl's The Bfg. That arrives in cinemas next July.
Rest in peace, Melissa Mathison. Our thoughts are with her family and friends.

For some reason, Hollywood fell in love with British actors again in the 1990s. Sparked by Alan Rickman's turn as Hans Gruber in Die Hard at the back end of the 1980s, many movie villains were either Brits, or in the case of Cliffhanger, John Lithgow taking on the mannerisms of a British antagonist.
Yet in particular, Hollywood went recruiting British comedy talent, with faces then mainly - but not exclusively - known for their small screen work getting roles of various sizes in Hollywood productions. When we last left the Doctor and Clara, the former had shown his willingness to sacrifice the one to save the majority while the latter had proved the Doctor isn’t the only one who lies. Determined to keep up her double life, Clara’s playing a dangerous game with both Twelve and Danny. But who was behind the computerized voice of Gus? Or does it even matter? Will “Flatline” continue the trend of the Monster-Of-The-Week (Motw) or will the threads of this season start to coalesce? Time to find out! ************ Either we’re in the 1970s or this balding hipster hasn’t updated his decor since then. He’s whispering into a corded wall phone — truly an archaic device — to the police. He knows who did “it” and they’re everywhere. Whoever “they” are prove the hipster’s paranoid delusions are true by instantly murdering him. Godspeed, sir. You make delightfully eccentric wallpaper.

We’ve reviewed every summer movie season since 1980 to find out which are the best, and which are the worst. Last week we posted our picks for the worst, and here we post our picks for the best.
2015 and 2016 may just be the most overthetop summer movie seasons yet. It seems like nearly every movie slated for a summer 2015 or 2016 release is heavily anticipated. Because of these impending summers of movie awesomeness, we’ve decided to take a look back at summer movie seasons of years past. The idea of the summer movie season is currently in full swing, but it didn’t catch on immediately. Hollywood had to do its fair share of experimenting to determine what types of films would be most successful. As a result, some summer movie seasons have been better than others. We’ve reviewed them all for you and ranked them from worst to best.

I’m not too familiar with Roald Dahl‘s book “The Bfg.” When everyone else seemed to be reading it in middle school, I always had this idea, based on the cover illustration depicting a very large man holding a tiny girl, that the initials stood for “Big Fucking Guy.” Really, though, it’s all about a “Big Friendly Giant” — the only friendly one, in fact – who kidnaps then befriends that tiny girl, who isn’t really tiny but just normal sized. There are some other giants in the story, too, and the new pals aim to stop them from eating people. The Queen of England becomes involved. Honestly, I’m just going by the Wikipedia page and book cover synopsis, so I’ll stop there before I mess anything up or spoil the ending. The important thing is that they’re making another movie of the book, this one live-action. And...

New York — To find their Mr. Darcy, the Guthrie Theater in Minnesota has turned to a Mad Man.
Vincent Kartheiser, who plays the malcontent Pete Campbell on AMC's "Mad Men," will star this summer in a new Guthrie production of "Pride and Prejudice" as the brooding hero of Jane Austen's most famous novel.
"It's interesting playing a character that people have such strong feelings about before I've even begun playing him," he said Friday by phone from Los Angeles. "I don't have a lot of experience playing famous characters and it's an interesting expectation that lays on my head."
Kartheiser is a native of Minneapolis and first appeared at the Guthrie in 1986 at age 7 as Tiny Tim in "A Christmas Carol." He returned to play small roles in the company's 1990 productions of "Henry V" and "Henry IV."
"I think my biggest scene I was being carried around dead," he joked.

Long before they were co-workers at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, "Mad Men" stars Jay R. Ferguson (Stan Rizzo) and Vincent Kartheiser (Pete Campbell) were teen heartthrobs in the '90s.
As Pajiba recently pointed out, native Texan Ferguson was plucked out of obscurity to play the role of Ponyboy Curtis in the TV adaptation of the feature film "The Outsiders" in 1989. He moved out to Los Angeles at the age of 14 for the part and has been working pretty steadily since.
Here he is in 1990:

After "The Outisders" was cancelled 13 episodes in, Ferguson was cast in the Burt Reynolds-fronted sitcom "Evening Shade." He starred on the CBS comedy as Reynolds' character's eldest son throughout the show's four-season run.

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films will bestow its top honorary achievement awards on renowned director Frank Oz, The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, and actor James Remar on July 26th, when the Academy presents the 38th annual Saturn Awards.
Oz, Remar, Kirkman, and producers of "The Simpsons" (this year's Milestone Award winner) are expected to attend this year’s Saturn Awards ceremony at the Castaway Event Center in Burbank, California.

Roald Dahl has long been a rich vein of source material for cinema. The live-action adaptations of The Witches and Matilda are rightly well-regarded, as are the less conventional stop-motion versions of Fantastic Mr Fox and James and the Giant Peach.
There has already been a cartoon version of the Bfg, Dahl’s tale of a Big Friendly Giant who captures and then delivers dreams to people all over the world. His talk of human beans, snoz-cumbers and the like is highly endearing, but the cartoon has aged badly, despite excellent voice work from David Jason.
It is therefore with guarded optimism that the news of a planned live-action adap is welcomed. DreamWorks are to produce the new film, working from a script on which Melissa Mathison is said to be hard at work. Mathison wrote Et and The Indian in the Cupboard, so is far from green and should...

[1] Like so many young bookworms, I counted Roald Dahl among my very favorite authors growing up. Dahl's books were childlike without being childish, thanks to Dahl's ability to whip up the perfect combination of humor, drama, and just the tiniest bit of terror. Hollywood apparently agrees with me, as Dahl's works have been adapted for the silver screen several times over -- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, and The Witches are just some of his novels that have been turned into feature films. The next Dahl book to get the Hollywood treatment will be is 1982 classic The Bfg, which is being developed as a feature over at DreamWorks with E.T. scribe Melissa Mathison tapped to write the script. More details after the jump. The Bfg tells the story of a girl named Sophie, who encounters and befriends the Big Friendly Giant (i.

Juan Jose Campanella, the Argentine who won the foreign-language Oscar in 2009 for his film The Secret in Their Eyes, has decided to make his first animated feature. His film has been titled Metegol, or Foosball, and only has a budget of $9.75 million if you can believe that.
The film “follows an underdog who, with the help of foosball figures that come to life, must take on a star soccer pro to save their village.”
I for one think this is an interesting storyline. It reminds me of The Indian in the Cupboard except there seems to be a lot more at risk if an underdog has to challenge a pro to save his village. I wonder how they are going to set up that village angle.
Campanella stated that “we are finding a visual style that we haven’t seen before in an animated movie. We are putting a lot of effort in that.

One of my favorite comedies of the past five years was Frank Oz’s Death At A Funeral. It’s a tremendously funny film with an amazing cast and a lot of scenes that stuck with me long after I saw it and passed it on to friends. Yes that’s right, I have purchased this movie more than once for myself and ended up giving it to a friend because I know they’ll love it, and they always do.
Frank Oz is a very good director. Sure he’s a master puppeteer and is of course the legendary voice of Yoda, but he’s also a very good director and has made some really good films over the years like The Score, What About Bob, The Indian In The Cupboard, and The Stepford Wives.
