Former French Culture Minister Frédéric Mitterrand, who was a high-profile and sometimes controversial figure on France’s cultural scene, died on Thursday at the age of 76, his family announced.
Born in Paris in 1947 to a well-to-do family, Mitterrand was the nephew of President François Mitterrand.
His many activities across half a century included teacher, arthouse cinema owner, cinema and culture commentator, TV presenter, producer and documentary-maker.
He first gained notoriety on France’s cultural scene as the owner of the bohemian arthouse cinema L’Olympic in Paris’ then down-at-heel 14th arrondissement.
After a brief time as a geography and history teacher, he acquired the theater in 1971 at the age of 22 with the help of a loan from the father of one of his former pupils.
It took on a folkloric status for its mixed clientele of locals, cinephiles, neighborhood hoodlums, drag queens and the occasional film star and auteur director of the time.

Fresh off last week’s embarrassing six-way lip sync battle, the ladies of RuPaul’s Drag Race decided on Thursday that they were really going to start trying from now on. No more tucking around!
Unfortunately, not everyone was able to keep that promise, as seen in this week’s disastrous mini challenge Why You Maddow Tho? The assignment was simple: dress up like MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow (cheap jacket and all!) and read a series of breaking news reports from a teleprompter. Yet “simple” proved too much for some queens, like poor Silky Nutmeg Ganache, who struggled with the...

Everyone gets their hands dirty (or dirtier) on Mary Kills People Season 2 Episode 2 and it's a helluva wild ride.
No other show would even attempt to cram the Big Bad shooting a henchman in the head, the ex-partner setting up a new business venture, the Big Secret leaking (again), two clients crossing over, the undercover cop from last season reappearing, And the teen finding a new love interest all into one episode.
And yet, Mary Kills People manages to take all that crazy hot mess and produce beautifully poignant moments of thoughtful humanity.
Heather: The way I see it, you have a choice. You can believe in nothing or you can believe in something. And I choose something. What about you?
Jess: I was raised by atheists. I'm a godless child.

Even Jess didn't annoy me so much this time around.

For his first time out with the “Star Wars” universe, Rian Johnson populated “The Last Jedi” with a slew of new and old friends and foes, including several creature standouts: the adorable Porgs, the elegant Vulptices, the majestic Falthiers, the sinister Snoke, and the return of Master Yoda.

There’s no official nationwide re‑release of a Christmas classic planned this year, but instead cinemas are programming a lot of event cinema: livestreamed opera and ballet from swanky big-city venues. The most seasonal is The Nutcracker, from the Royal Opera House on 8 December; there’s also Madame Butterfly from the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on 7 December and Karija Saariaha’s medieval romance Love from Afar from the Met in New York on 10 December. If you have not yet tried one of these nights, they are great fun. Gorey: The Secret Lives of Edward Gorey Written and directed by Travis Russ Presented by Life Jacket Theatre Company, Here, NYC April 30-May 22, 2016
If you’ve ever watched the opening of the long-running PBS anthology series Mystery!, then you’ve seen the art of Edward Gorey. If you haven’t, well, he is not the most mainstream of artists, though perhaps the mainstream has edged closer to his sensibility in our post-Tim Burton, post-Hot Topic world. Gorey: The Secret Lives of Edward Gorey, a new play by Travis Russ, does not walk the audience through Gorey’s greatest hits in common biographical narrative fashion (so if you are unfamiliar with his work, do yourself a favor and look into it on your own). In fact, in this play, Gorey refers to his most famous work, The Gashlycrumb Tinies, with clear weariness. Instead, Gorey quickly asserts that time is "fragile,...

From Apple to the Vietnam War, Steve Jobs director Danny Boyle is in early talks to direct an adaption of the acclaimed musical Miss Saigon, which focuses on the star-crossed romance of an American GI and a Vietnamese bargirl in the Vietnam War.
The original Broadway musical opened in 1991 (two years after its 1989 debut in London) and updated the classic Opera Madame Butterfly into the modern Vietnam setting. During its premiere in ’91 the show earned ten Tony nominations and won three of them.
Still, Boyle fans might find this potentially odd tangent in the director’s career off-putting: he was most recently talking up a storm about the long-awaited Trainspotting 2. It’s unclear if Miss Saigon is something he’s looking at after Trainspotting, or if there’s still time in between now and the production of that sequel. Last December it was reported that the entire original cast was...

Coming off the success of "Steve Jobs," filmmaker Danny Boyle is reportedly in talks to direct a film adaptation of the classic stage musical "Miss Saigon" at Working Title says The Daily Mail.
A re-working of Puccini's opera Madame Butterfly, the story follows the relationship between an American GI and Vietnamese bargirl during the Vietnam War in Saigon in the 1970s. Premiering in 1989 in London, it ran for ten years and closed after four thousand performances.
Who has penned the screenplay hasn't been made clear, but the project is said to be moving along fast with the "Les Miserables" film team of Cameron Mackintosh, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner set to produce. At one time Lee Daniels was attached to direct, but that's not the case anymore.
Boyle confirmed today on Facebook that he's currently in Edinburgh researching "Trainspotting 2" ahead of a May shoot, and has the FX series "Trust" in the works.

An exciting new opportunity is helicoptering in for Georgia-based musical theater performers. An acclaimed production currently playing in London has planned a Broadway transfer for spring 2017. The Serenbe Playhouse and director Brian Clowdus are seeking union or nonunion performers for a Jan. 25 audition in Chattahoochee Hills, Ga. Can you hear the helicopters in the distance? Miss Saigon, the 1989 musical from Les Misérables creators Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, is headed back to Broadway after almost 25 years. The show, a Vietnam War–era update of the opera Madame Butterfly, tells the story of a romance between a Vietnamese bargirl and an American soldier. EW reports that the show will debut at a Shubert theater in the spring of 2017, where it will run until January 18, 2018; after that, it will launch a national tour of cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and Boston. Producer Cameron Mackintosh shares that this iteration of the show will be an import of the current West End revival, which stars Eva Noblezada as Kim (a role originated by Lea Salonga) and Jon Jon Briones as the Engineer. Mackintosh promises "a grittier, more realistic approach than the original production" that maintains "the power and...

Atlantic City, N.J. (AP) -- Miss Georgia Betty Cantrell is the new Miss America, but her crowning moment was nearly overshadowed by a three-decade old pageant scandal, and a still-raw debate over whether the NFL's reigning champions cheated on their way to a Super Bowl victory. Cantrell rode an opera performance of "Tu Tu Piccolo Iddio'' from "Madame Butterfly'' to the title in Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall on Sunday night, besting 51 other competitors in the nationally televised pageant. She won a preliminary competition earlier in the week, also with an opera performance. "I'm still so overwhelmed, I don't know what to say other than thank you!" Cantrell told reporters moments after being crowned Miss America. She won a $50,000 scholarship along with her title. Cantrell is due to make the traditional pageant-winner's frolic in the Atlantic City surf on Monday morning. The pageant also marked the return of Miss America 1984 Vanessa Williams,...

Sundance coverage continues with Glenn on "The Girl from Nagasaki"
Avant-garde cinema isn’t for all audiences. The Girl from Nagasaki proves that it’s not for all directors, either. For whatever virtues Michel Conte has as an artist and a photographer (of which I am unfamiliar), filmmaking may not be of the same league. His debut feature, co-directed alongside his wife Ayako Yoshida, is a wild re-interpretation of Puccini’s famed Japanese-set opera, Madame Butterfly that dissolves into an assault of seemingly meaningless imagery; an experimental, visually symphonic and unfortunately misjudged piece of cinema.
Taking the story of Cio-Cio San and her breakdown at the absence of her American soldier husband and father of her child, Conte’s film at least fails while attempting something bizarrely different. Sadly, in his effort to turn the table on the conventions of narrative film, he has crafted a sort of Frankenstein’s...

Crime drama is always looking for new ways of dramatising a murder investigation: one killing investigated over 10 episodes; alternating viewpoints of cops, killer, victims and so on. However, in this ambitious series from HBO, multiple seasons will follow the search for a serial killer in Louisiana over 17 years, with each year introducing a new cast. Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are in the first group. Either magnificent or mad. Mark Lawson HBO.
Penny Dreadful
This has a remarkable lineage: it is produced by film and stage director Sam Mendes and John Logan, who wrote Skyfall for Mendes as well as Hugo, The Aviator and Gladiator. Its disadvantage may be the daring concept, in which a number of fictional horror story characters – Dracula, Frankenstein's monster and Dorian Gray – are living in Victorian London.

I honestly had very little to go one when I added A.J. Edwards’ The Better Angels to my predictions list and the fact that it has been included among the New Frontier offerings means that we’re in for something out of the ordinary, as the section has often challenged conventional form. Produced by Terrence Malick, and filmed in B&W, it features Jason Clarke, Diane Kruger, Brit Marling, Wes Bentley and a newbie actor taking on the role of a young Lincoln. Here is the entire listing of five (plus installation projects), which will include Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s on-going Hit Record project.
The Better Angels / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: A.J. Edwards) — Set in the harsh wilderness of Indiana, this is the story of Abraham Lincoln’s youth. It tells of the hardships that shaped him, the tragedy that marked him forever, and the two women who guided him to immortality.

When Sundance announced the films in competition for the 2014 festival yesterday, its organizers noted that they were impressed by the caliber of cinematic artistry — mostly due to technology — that freed up filmmakers to experiment with different genres. No category of the festival is more rooted in genre than Park City at Midnight, the late-night section that specializes in horror and the supernatural, and this year’s slate has several potential breakouts. “The Midnight lineup came together in a way that is about the strongest group we’ve ever had, top to bottom,” says Trevor Groth, Sundance’s director of programming.

Eligible projects for the scheme must be English-language, of a “mainstream genre” and pre-production must be completed with director and lead cast secured.
The duo will consider European locations for shoot, but stipulate that post-production must be completed at the Polish studio.
Alvernia’s head of production Anna Rozalska has been splitting time between La and Poland in recent months in a bid to build production partnerships for the studio.

Now that Lee Daniels is all finished with his historical drama, legally obligated to be titled Lee Daniels' The Butler due to a stupid lawsuit thrown at The Weinstein Company, he's ready for the next one. As we heard last fall, the director was slated to make Get It While You Can, a biopic on rock singer Janis Joplin, which has Amy Adams attached to play the rock goddess. Now Daniels has told THR that is definitely his next film. For those who don't recall it sounds like the film will chronicle just one day in the life of the iconic singer (according to the IMDb page). Plus, Daniels also seems to have his next two films planned. Read on! Following the Janis Joplin biopic, Daniels says he still has an eye on getting the musical Miss Saigon to the big screen. The famous story is a retelling of Giacomo Puccini...

With the resounding success of the page-to-stage-to-screen adaptation of Les Miserables in movie theaters this week - having already grossed more than 100 million since its Christmas Day debut, the biggest ever opening in movie musical history - the eyes of many entertainment enthusiasts are on mega-producer Cameron Mackintosh for what he will do next as a follow-up, as the box office receipts begin to pile up. More than a merely spurious notion, his next project seems to be set in stone should Les Miz journey on to mega-hit movie musical status and it very well might - according to Mackintosh in a recent promotional interview, if the film version of Les Miz actually breaks the half-billion mark he will indeed proceed to produce a film adaptation of another BoublilSchonberg hit mega-musical from the 1980s that he originally presented to the world - the Vietnam-set, Madame Butterfly-inspired Miss Saigon. Dominic Minghella, brother of the late Oscar-winning filmmaker Anthony, is currently prepping three films for his Island Pictures banner with a Puccini biopic likely to go first.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Minghella has written the $19 million-budgeted costume drama on which he hopes to make his feature directorial debut. Rainer Mockert is already onboard as producer.
The story follows the opera composer who lived the high life due to the rewards from the classical works he created. The action is set during his dry spell between his two most famed operas - "La Boheme" and "Madame Butterfly" - and the unique relationship with a housemaid that helped him break out of it.
Minghella and partner Sarah Beardsall are also developing an adaptation of Ben Hatch's UK travelog "Are We Nearly There Yet?" and an original script by Australian comedienne Tania Lacey called "Virtually Kitty".

Dear Fern,
With the De Palma and Anderson, and then later the films by Bellocchio and Malick, defining “direction” indeed has become a key discussion point at the festival this year. Bellocchio's Dormant Beauty, as you indicate, is the special case: quite simply he directs the shit out of that movie. The screenplay and “hot button” topic are structural and political fodder for introducing and then orchestrating and nimbly evolving this engrossing melodrama of morality, Catholicism, contemporary Italian politics, media images and multiple characters across churches, hospitals, mansions, clandestine government backrooms, television performances, protests and seedy motel rooms. The film was compulsive; it was impossible not to get caught up in its energetic valences. I'm still haunted by just where Bellocchio chose to end each of the mini-stories caught up in the fervor of (real) events in the film—brooding, dark, complex and unresolved, yet with an image...

Lisa Simeone, a freelance radio host who hosts "Soundprint," a documentary show that airs on NPR affiliates, was fired from her job because she participated in a protest in Washington D.C., Simeone confirmed Thursday (Oct. 20), reports the AP.
"In my mind, it's fine if you want to be a leader of an organized protest movement, but you can't also be in a journalistic role. You can't be the host of a journalism program and plead that you are different than the reporter who is going to come on a minute after you introduce the program," says Moira Rankin, president of Soundprint Media Center Inc.
The protest, which was held near the White House, began as an anti-war protest but turned into an anti-corporate greed protest as well. NPR says that Simeone doesn't work for its radio network, since "Soundprint" is an independent radio show, and it hadn't pressed Soundprint to fire Simeone.
