Up until 2014, the public at large didn't know about the extent of sexual crimes committed by comedian and TV star Bill Cosby. Since 2014, over 60 women have come forward with allegations of sexual assault, some of which stretch back to the 1960s. The many, many details of Cosby's assaults, cover-ups, and other crimes have been openly detailed in the news, and in the 2022 documentary series "We Need to Talk About Cosby."
Cosby's crimes make discussions of the hit series "The Cosby Show" a little fraught. Because the stories of sexual assault hadn't been made public yet, Cosby was easily accepted by mainstream sitcom viewers as a kindly, father-like figure: a perfectly put-upon patriarch of a modern, wealthy Black family. "The Cosby Show" was instantly successful and widely beloved when it debuted in 1984, and it lasted eight seasons and 201 episodes. Everyone watched it. Given the current dismal political and cultural climate as well as streaming services’ massive appetite for celebrity driven content, it comes as no surprise that the 40th edition of the Sundance Film Festival is chock full of portrait documentaries. Frida Kahlo, Christopher Reeve, Luther Vandross and Tammy Faye are just a few of the boldface names that are being examined in various docus featured in the Sundance nonfiction lineup.
The festival is no stranger to star-driven docus. Tony Bennett's first record, "Because of You" was released in 1952 and it instantly codified the entertainer as one of the music world's great crooners. In 1962, his 15th record, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" was certified platinum by the RIAA, but that was after he had already established himself with Count Basie and his Orchestra and as a great fan of songwriter Harold Arlen. All told, he released 61 records in his decades-long career, not including his eight albums of collaborations and duets. He sang with Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Ray Charles, Carrie Underwood, Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, Mariah Carey, Bono, Sting, Paul McCartney, Diana Krall, and many others. Most recently, he released two collaborations with Lady Gaga in 2018 and 2021. Bennett passed away on July 21, 2023 at the age of 96. He will be deeply missed.

Nine more women are accusing Bill Cosby of sexual assault in a lawsuit that alleges he used his “enormous power, fame and prestige” to victimize them.
A lawsuit filed Wednesday in federal court in Nevada alleges that the women were individually drugged and assaulted between approximately 1979 and 1992 in Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe homes, dressing rooms and hotels.
One woman alleges that Cosby, claiming to be her acting mentor, lured her from New York to Nevada, where he drugged her in a hotel room with what he had claimed to be non-alcoholic sparkling cider and then raped her.
The 85-year-old former “Cosby Show” star has now been accused of rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment by more than 60 women. He has denied all allegations involving sex crimes. Bill Cosby has blasted the case that landed him in prison, insisting it was a sham orchestrated by prosecutors.
In his first interview since he was sentenced last year for sexual assault, the comedian maintained his innocence and said he spends his time behind bars mentoring other inmates.
“I have eight years and nine months left,” Cosby told the National Newspaper Publishers Association’s BlackPressUSA.com. “When I come up for parole, they’re not going to hear me say that I have remorse. I was there. I don’t care what group of people come along and talk about this when they weren’t there. They don’t know.”
Cosby spoke with Nnpa — a consortium of black-owned community newspapers — by phone from Sci-Phoenix, a maximum-security penitentiary near Philadelphia.

Phylicia Rashad had no idea how big “The Cosby Show” would become as she was filming the family sitcom in the 1980s and 1990s — nor could she have imagined how its legacy would be complicated by allegations against the titular comedian.
“We were [just] having fun,” the actress said at the Atx Television Festival Friday. “We were working and we were having fun.”
Rashad, who received a standing ovation when she was honored with the “Award in Television eXcellence” at the festival, received two Emmy nominations for her role as the Huxtable matriarch on the long-running NBC comedy. But after 58 women accused Bill Cosby of sexual assault, most networks pulled it from its syndication rotation.
Prior to landing the role of matriarch Clair Huxtable opposite Cosby, Rashad had primarily worked in theater, which made it so she was always on cue. “And out of that came the famous Clair Huxtable stare,...

You can do what you wanna do, in living Carrey. The first two episodes of Showtime’s new series “Kidding” have also served as a bit of an unexpected “In Living Color” reunion for star Jim Carrey. Among the guests in those episodes: Kelly Coffield Park and T’Keyah Crystal Keymáh, both of whom starred alongside Carrey in the iconic early 1990s Fox sketch comedy series.
In “Kidding,” Carrey plays Jeff Piccirillo, who has played PBS kids TV host “Jeff Pickles” for 30 years — but is now struggling to cope with the death of his son and the end of his marriage. In the show’s first two episodes, Coffield Park played Joanne, a Realtor who’s selling the house next door to Jeff’s estranged wife and son. And after Jeff, in an impulse, shaves part of his head, Keymáh appears in Episode 2 as Amika, a hair stylist who fixes his look.

Andrea Constand, the victim in Bill Cosby’s sexual assault trial that resulted in a guilty verdict last month in Pennsylvania, will appear for an exclusive interview Friday on NBC’s Dateline. It will be her first TV sit-down.
The special Dateline episode, “Bringing Down Bill Cosby: Andrea Constand Speaks,” will air at 10 Pm Et and feature interviews with four other Cosby accusers — Janice Baker-Kinney, Lise-Lotte Lublin, Heidi Thomas and Chelan Lasha — who testified against him in the retrial, along with Constand’s mother Gianna Constand.
Kate Snow, who interviewed a group of 27 Cosby accusers as part of a Dateline special in 2015, will host. Friday’s special will also include interviews with Andrea Constand’s attorneys Dolores Troiani and Bebe Kivitz, and Angela Rose of Pave (Promoting Awareness Victim Empowerment), an advocacy group for survivors of sexual assault.
Constand’s case is the only one against Cosby to result in a criminal trial.

Well, if you are still interested in watching old episodes of “The Cosby Show” — as well as “The Bill Cosby Show” and “Cosby” — we know where you can find them. One week after Bill Cosby was found guilty on three counts of aggravated indecent assault, these sitcoms are still available for streaming on Amazon Prime, here, here and here.
The shows were still accessible on the site as recently as 1:20 p.m. Et Thursday.
Representatives for Amazon did not respond to TheWrap’s multiple requests for comment on the programs’ statuses with the streaming service, and whether or not they would be pulled.

As TheWrap previously reported, Bounce TV yanked “The Cosby Show” from its rotation last week on April 26, the day the judgment was made against the comedy icon in court. The cabler had aired the program as recently as 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. that same day. It was next scheduled to air the following day in the same time slots, though “The Hughley’s” will now run there instead each weekday.
“Effective immediately, Bounce is pulling ‘The Cosby Show’ from our schedule,” a rep for the network told TheWrap exclusively last Thursday.
Bounce initially picked up reruns of the ’80s and ’90s sitcom in late 2016, citing “popular demand” at the time. The online response to the cable channel’s decision back then was mixed, at best.
TV Land and Bet cable network Centric pulled reruns of the show in 2015, after a deposition surfaced in which Cosby said he obtained Quaalude tranquilizers to give to women with whom he wanted to have sex. On the streaming side, Hulu decided not to renew their contract with the show’s production company, Carsey Werner, back in November 2016.

A jury found Cosby guilty last week in his retrial over accusations made by former Temple University employee Andrea Constand. The judge allowed Cosby to be released on bail on Thursday, which CNN reports was in the amount of $1 million. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
Cosby, 80, was re-tried in a Pennsylvania court on three counts of aggravated indecent assault, stemming from Constand’s accusation that the comedian drugged and molested her in 2004 at his home outside of Philadelphia. The jury found him guilty in a unanimous vote on all three counts, after going into deliberations last Wednesday. The trial was in its 14th day when the verdict was handed down.
After the verdict was read, prosecutors argued that Cosby should be held without bail, calling him a flight risk because, they said, he owns a private plane. To this, Cosby exclaimed “he doesn’t have a plane, you a-hole.”

Following, Cosby’s removal from the Television Academy’s website Wednesday, his wife Camille Cosby blasted last week’s sexual assault conviction of her husband, calling it “mob justice.”
In a three-page letter issued Thursday, Cosby’s wife also called for a criminal investigation into what she called an “unethical” prosecution by Kevin Steele, the district attorney in Pennsylvania’s Montgomery County who led the retrial of the case following hung jury on the same charges last summer.

In the special, Apatow jokes about Bill Cosby trying to hide the newspaper from his wife so she can’t read the accusations against him, and in this post-Harvey Weinstein scandal world, the sketch is particularly resonant. Apatow thinks that way the Cosby scandal played out–it ended in a gridlocked jury and declared a mistrial–led people to have a stronger reaction to those who accused Weinstein and others. Days after Netflix fired Kevin Spacey from “House of Cards” and canceled an upcoming Louis C.K. standup special, both disgraced stars can still be found on the streaming service.
Five pre-existing Louis C.K. comedy specials, including this spring’s “Louis C.K. 2017,” continue to live on the site, available for viewing.
Meanwhile, four projects still pop up when searching for Spacey’s name, including “House of Cards” and the documentary “Now: In the Wings on a World Stage,” a behind the scenes look at Spacey starring in the Bridge Project production of “Richard III.”
That’s not to say that the streaming service isn’t taking a hit: Netflix scrapped plans to release the Spacey starrer “Gore,” a Gore Vidal biopic that had already finished shooting. And it may have to start over on Season 6 of “House of Cards,” with Robin Wright now as star, even though that show had already been shooting.

By most estimations, The New York Times’ initial reporting on Harvey Weinstein’s decades of sexual harassment changed everything. That perspective includes the Times, which published a timeline on November 11 called “After Weinstein: A List of Men Accused of Sexual Misconduct and the Fallout for Each,” detailing the public outcry surrounding a range of public figures who have faced varying degrees of repercussions for their abhorrent treatment of women and men in recent weeks.
It’s a curious framing device, particular with regard to its start. While Weinstein may have been the tipping point, there was a palpable drum roll leading to his downfall.
From a broader cultural standpoint, the backlash against powerful men doing terrible things started with Hannibal Burress’ tossed-off remarks about Bill Cosby, and the ensuing process through which Cosby was shunned by the industry; later, the business threats to Fox News following reporting about years of...
