As Russia’s war in Ukraine approaches its second anniversary, leading Russian director Aleksey German Jr., is currently giving “Air,” his state-funded WWII thriller, a commercial release in Russian cinemas.
With ferocious action and cruel detail, “Air” has been called out for being a patriotic film. It depicts the struggles of a group of female pilots to be allowed to fight alongside male colleagues on the Russo-German front lines in 1943-44. Grudgingly, they are given their chance. While many die along the way, those that survive buck the established patriarchy and gain the recognition they crave – as heroes and professional killers.
Variety spoke with German Jr. at the recent Festival of Young Cinema in Macau, which was only the second festival to play the film following its premiere in Tokyo late last year.

"The Sopranos" is known for its diverse soundtrack that series creator David Chase, producer Martin Bruestle, and music editor Kathryn Dayak carefully selected. Pre-recorded music is often chosen after completing the production and editing of an episode, but occasionally sequences are filmed to match the songs picked beforehand. In "The Sopranos: Selected Scripts from Three Seasons," Chase elaborates on why he uses popular songs and little to no original compositions:
"I sometimes see the music as another character, the lyrics of songs functioning as a Greek chorus, sometimes — but not always — summing up or commenting on events in the story ... Mostly the music fosters a feeling or mood."
Chase masterfully curates music from an assortment of moods, genres, and artists to voice the inner emotional life of his characters and their relationship to contemporary culture. This sonic tapestry amplifies the story being told and the themes of suburban family life,...

Russia’s war in Ukraine has drawn swift and wide-ranging condemnation from the international community, which has imposed unprecedented sanctions against President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle and pushed the Russian economy to a breaking point, with the ruble plummeting to historic lows on Monday.
Amid calls for a boycott of Russian films that have received government support and a strident response from European media groups, cultural institutions, film festivals and industry confabs, the backlash has rattled Russian filmmakers with long-standing personal and professional ties to the continent’s screen industry.
“The need for Europe to make a clear anti-war statement is understandable and necessary. However, banning all Russians from the major cultural events is not only unhelpful — it’s harmful,” said one veteran producer. “Hundreds and thousands of Russian culture workers have openly disagreed with the government decision to start a war: They condemn its actions, go to protests,...

This is despite a strong showing in the festival selection.
The Russian film industry has a much more muted presence at the Cannes Film Festival this year, due to travel restrictions, a low vaccine take-up rate at home, rising Covid cases and the European Union’s failure to yet recognise the Sputnik vaccine for those who are vaccinated.
The official delegation is comprised of around 50 people, compared to the 300-strong contingent that usually attends.

Although Russian director Aleksey German Jr.’s incisive, nuanced new feature House Arrest (Delo) takes place almost entirely in one cluttered if spacious apartment, its thematic scope spreads wide, well beyond this story of a middle-aged academic David (Merab Ninidze) who is falsely accused of embezzlement.

Exclusive: Russian film promotion body Roskino has launched a new export initiative, Russian Content Worldwide, in a bid to aid development of international relationships and interest in the Russian content market. The initiative was launched at the Russian Pavilion in Cannes this week and is direct response to the growing global interest in Russia’s film and television sector.
“Often we have been asked questions about the Russian market and we realized it’s quite difficult for international partners to understand our industry,” said Roskino CEO Evgenia Markova. “This is why Russian Content Worldwide stands on four main values: transparency, assistance, expertise and inspiration. Our aim is to give foreign partners easy and comprehensive access to the wide range of opportunites in the Russian market.”

Here’s the first clip from Russian helmer Aleksey German Jr.’s next title House Arrest, which is screening in Un Certain Regard at Cannes this year.
The satirical drama follows David, a university professor who takes to social media to criticize his city’s administration. But instead of the mayor’s dodgy dealings being investigated, David is himself accused of embezzlement and placed under house arrest. Despite the overbearing surveillance, double-crossing acquaintances and growing media interest, David remains defiant and will not apologize. With the court case drawing ever nearer, does David have any hope of winning this battle against Goliath?
German Jr. has been a frequent fixture on the international festival circuit with Berlin Silver Bear winners Dovlatov and Under Electric Clouds and he won best director at the 2008 Venice Film Festival.
MK2 is handling worldwide sales for the title. Take a look at the exclusive clip above.

MK2, the venerable family-owned film group which operates a leading arthouse multiplex chain in France and Spain, is emerging from the pandemic stronger, cooler and more ambitious than ever.
Nathanaël and Elisha Karmitz, who succeeded their father Marin at the helm of the company in 2005, have galvanized the MK2 brand with activities ranging from films, art, publishing, technology and lifestyle. The common threads between all these ventures are a taste for singularity, curation and a socially-minded approach.
After scoring big at Cannes in 2019 with Mati Diop’s “Atlantics” and Celine Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” which competed and won prizes, MK2 Films will again boast a fairly large presence for the festival’s comeback edition with nine films across several selections, including the competition with Joachim Trier’s “The Worst Person in the World,” the new Cannes Premiere section with Andrea Arnold’s “Cow,” Un Certain Regard...

Actress Shriya Pilgaonkar says the industry needs to work on eliminating pay disparity on the basis of gender. Shriya, who will be seen in the film "Haathi Mere Saathi", says she has heard actresses discussing how male stars often get paid as much as the entire budget of a heroine-centric film!
"I have heard conversations of the biggest leading actresses on how the budget of their entire film has been the salary of a male actor," she told Ians.
She says that even though you don't know how much your co-actor is earning, you are able to guess based on the film's progresses.
"I don't know how much my co-actors get but you get a sense of it. You know how negotiations are done. At a personal level, I made sure that I get the best deal in my capacity," she says.
The actress says that it's important to stand up for yourself.

MK2 Films has come on board to handle world sales on “House Arrest,” a satirical drama directed by critically acclaimed Russian helmer Aleksey German Jr. (“Dovlatov”) that tackles Russia’s judicial system.
“House Arrest” follows David, a Russian university professor who takes to social media to criticize his city’s administration and the Mayor’s dodgy dealings. But David soon finds himself accused of embezzlement and placed under house arrest. Despite the overbearing surveillance, double-crossing acquaintances, and growing media interest, David remains defiant and will not apologize.
“I came up with this project many years ago. The drama of a man fighting to keep his dignity,” said German Jr. “This film is an essential and intimate statement about what inner freedom is and how important it is to stay honest to yourself,” added the politically-engaged helmer.
German Jr.’s credits include “Paper Soldier,” which won Venice’s best director award,...

It’s happening. It’s finally happening. What was once a particularly pervasive and aggressive Internet meme is now a reality. HBO Max’s list of new releases for March 2021 is highlighted by none other than the mythical Snyder cut.
The entity now known as Zach Snyder’s Justice League will premiere on March 18. While it was originally planned to be a four-part miniseries, this recut version of 2017’s ill-fated Justice League will in fact be a four-hour movie. But perhaps even four hours won’t be enough for fans who have been waiting years for just such an event.

Birthday’s are indeed special and today we celebrate the anniversary of the man who told us the importance of boiled eggs, gave the youth a song etched in their personality as well as help Vin Diesel and his gang steal a flash drive. Yes, we’re talking about none other than the awesome Ali Fazal.
Be it his smile that melts our heart, or his charisma each time he comes on screen, here’s an actor who we simply can’t get enough of. With versatility being his strongest suit, we’ve seen him pack a punch as a gangster called Guddu Bhaiya, an Indian Muslim servant and many more.
Having turned 34 today, Fazal fans are just a week away from seeing their favourite star back on screen as he is all set to unleash hell on his enemies in the second season of Mirzapur. While we wait for...

While most actors have a long wait ahead of them before their next starring role is devoured by audiences, actor Ali Fazal has two major performances coming out: Season 2 of Amazon India Original series “Mirzapur,” streaming Oct. 23, and a feature role in Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie adaptation “Death on the Nile,” set for release Dec. 18, pandemic willing.
Fazal broke out internationally in “Furious 7” (2015), before going on to play Abdul to Judi Dench’s Victoria in Stephen Frears’ “Victoria & Abdul” in 2017 — the same year he was chosen as one of the Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch.
In “Death on the Nile,” Fazal plays a character first portrayed by George Kennedy in the 1978 film adaptation, and by David Soul as part of long-running series “Poirot.” His casting continues the recent trend of color-blind casting where an actor’s ethnicity doesn’t necessarily inform the role. “The culture has shifted,...

Ali Fazal is an affable actor. He brings a certain charm, reminiscent of Shashi Kapoor, into all his roles. But how much charm can you bring into a cheerless sullen role of a man who suffers from a serious social disorder which prevents him from stepping out of his home? And then you have Jim Sarbh as your best friend. Why would you want to go out?
The last time I heard about someone staying home indefinitely, it happened to Parveen Babi and she was declared schizophrenic. In "House Arrest" they have a fancy Japanese term for Ali's character's clinical condition. They call it hikikomori.
Very impressive. If only the scriptwriters had not stopped being creative after finding a fancy designer-disease for the protagonist. The crux of the film is so vapid and the narrative assembled with such haphazardness I wondered if Netflix wants to portray India as a country...

Practically every hero in the McU took part in Avengers: Infinity War – every hero, that is, except for Hawkeye, Ant-Man and the Wasp. Focusing on the latter two, Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne were perhaps put on the bench because they’ll soon get their own starring roles in next month’s Ant-Man and the Wasp. But what do Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly think their characters were doing during Thanos’ attack?
While chatting with Ndtv, the duo were pressed for info on where Earth’s Tiniest Heroes were in Infinity War. Rudd decided to stick with the established explanation, reminding us that the movie did feature a brief line that revealed Scott was still under house arrest following his transgressions in Captain America: Civil War.
“I remember going to see Infinity War and they do mention that I was under House Arrest and that I was not able to leave.
