Great news for the sardonic, sarcastic, and rejected members of the Esteemers, because Mondo is releasing the first-ever, official, on-model figures based on the hit MTV show and cultural institution, "Daria." The adult animated sitcom created by Glenn Eichler and Susie Lewis Lynn was famously a spin-off of Mike Judge's "Beavis and Butt-Head," with Tracy Grandstaff reprising her role as the intelligent, cynical Daria Morgendorffer as she navigates her new high school in Lawndale.
"Daria" was a satirical look at suburban America and the high school experience, with the titular character and best friend Jane Lane's borderline misanthropic criticisms doubling as the vocalized interior thoughts of Gen X and elder millennials as they came of age. While Beavis and Butt-Head were oblivious idiots whose existence provided a commentary on the way the world mistakenly viewed teenagers because they didn't understand them,...

(Welcome to My Most Ridiculous Note, a series of interviews in which animators talk about the weirdest and funniest notes they received from studio executives.)
"Kim Possible" was only the second animated series made for Disney Channel (after "The Proud Family"), and it quickly became one of the cable channel's most popular shows. It's easy to see why: It had action, it had comedy, and it had one of the coolest Disney pets ever.
One of the minds behind the show, co-creator Mark McCorkle, has been in the industry long enough to see it go from being dominated by toy commercials to exploding with original (and not-so-original) ideas and genres. He's worked on everything from "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!" and Hasbro's "Cops" to "Aladdin and the King of Thieves" and "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command."

“Beavis and Butt-Head” are back on TV. A revival of the classic ’90s MTV animated series is set to premiere on Paramount+ on Aug. 4, the streamer announced Thursday. In addition, the streamer revealed a first trailer for the series, which can be watched below.
Created and voiced by Mike Judge in 1992 for the MTV animated anthology series “Liquid Television,” Beavis and Butt-Head are two teenage slackers who share an extreme libido and complete inability to attract women. The characters proved popular enough to launch their own spinoff series, which ran for 200 episodes across seven seasons. The show sees the pair embark on various half-baked schemes, as well as mock contemporary music videos that aired on MTV. The series launched another popular spin-off series “Daria,” starring the character voiced by Tracy Grandstaff, and was revived for an extra season on MTV in 2011.

On “Everything’s Trash,” the insecure but brash podcaster Phoebe (Phoebe Robinson) has been invited to speak at a college lecture series; the professor who brought her describes her as “a digital ouroboros” and “a culture-maker extraordinaire.” Understandably, she’s a bit nervous, especially when asked by another, obviously snobbish teacher present what her project is, what she’s trying to say. Phoebe responds this way: “You, professor, are trash. So is that lady, and that dude, and these little meatballs on sticks.” She waves an hors d’oeuvre for emphasis. “All pure hot, and cold, garbage. Actually, everything’s trash.”
Phoebe goes on to say that “diving into the muck” allows us a chance of “surviving the dumpster fire that is our world” — that acknowledging that everything is bad allows us, perhaps, to work toward making it better. It’s a reasonable project, one that could potentially be carried over...

On March 30, Bruce Willis’ family announced on social media that he would retire from acting because of an ongoing struggle with aphasia, a brain disorder that affects a person’s cognitive function and ability to communicate.
Instantly fans began sharing their favorite Willis performances across social media, but they were faced with a glaring hole in the Willis oeuvre – “Moonlighting,” the ABC comedy-drama series that turned Willis into a household name and led to him being cast in “Die Hard.” The series isn’t available on any streaming platform, despite being one of the biggest shows of the 1980s, and the DVD box sets, a reliable standby in situations where streaming is not an option, have long been out of print (vintage copies going for more than 100 per season on eBay and other secondary markets).

In 1993, six years after Johnny Depp and company were deemed too old to keep up the charade on “21 Jump Street,” Brandon Lee went back to Bearsden Academy. At least he said his name was Brandon Lee. Some people thought that was weird, since another Brandon Lee had just died a few months earlier. They also found it strange that this fifth-year transfer student — who claimed to be from Canada, the same country where countless teenage con men swear that their long-distance girlfriends live — looked so much older than everyone else.
If you grew up in Scotland, you probably (think you) know this story. If you’re from the relatively posh Glasgow suburb of Bearsden, the Brandon Lee saga is the stuff of local legend. But if you’re stumbling into “My Old School” unawares, as most of the film’s virtual Sundance audience did, then you have a lot...

A few years ago, many were calling for a return to the Roaring '20s. While those plans were derailed thanks to the general state of the world right now, streaming services still decided to turn back the clock. Although, they stopped at the '90s. "Full House," "Saved By The Bell," "Daria," and "Legends of the Hidden Temple" are just a few favorites that have been revived by various streamers.

Paramount Plus is taking a page from ViacomCBS’s Pluto TV streaming service with the launch of 18 linear channels that let subscribers surf through always-on themed collections of shows — just like old-fashioned television.
On Thursday, Paramount Plus launched Live Channels, a new feature that curates popular shows and movies on the service in linear channels, pulled from ViacomCBS properties including CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, BET and the Smithsonian Channel as well as from other sources.
The themed “live” channels, streaming 24 hours per day, feature the service’s most-streamed genres, such as Kids & Family Fun, Crime & Justice and Reality TV: Competitions, as well as fan-favorite franchises such as “Star Trek,” “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “Paw Patrol.”
Paramount Plus is adopting the linear TV-style model pioneered by Pluto TV, which Viacom acquired in early 2019. Tom Ryan, founder of Pluto TV, was elevated to president and CEO of ViacomCBS Streaming a year ago.

Photo: 'Clone High' The early 2000s for MTV were a transitional period, where fewer music videos played in place for more reality shows starring conventionally attractive Californians. One of the pinnacles of MTV in the nineties was their animated series from the idiotic misadventures of ‘Beavis and Butthead’ to the GenX nialism of ‘Daria’ and the 2000s set out to continue this tradition. In the early 2000s, MTV co-produced the series ‘Clone High’ with Canada’s Teletoon company. ‘Clone High’, created by Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Bill Lawrence, is an animated parody of high school dramas that follows the clones of historical figures in a modern high school setting. ‘Clone High’, with its silly premise and witty humor, managed not only to satirize the high school melodrama but to also tell a heartfelt story. HBO Max is going to high school. The streaming service has handed out a two-season order to the “Clone High” reboot from original creators Christopher Miller, Phil Lord and Bill Lawrence.
“Clone High” was among three adult animated series pickups on Wednesday, part of an expansive slate that includes four additional projects in development.
Among the new series are a “Scooby Doo” spinoff, “Velma,” that will star Mindy Kaling, and “Fired on Mars,” an existential workplace comedy set five minutes in the future led by “SNL” castmember Pete Davidson. Additionally, HBO Max has picked up two more seasons of “Close Enough” ahead of that comedy’s second season premiere on Feb. 25.

The “X-Files” is coming back in two-dimensional form; Fox is developing an animated spin-off of the classic sci-fi drama that will boast a more comedic take on the franchise.
TVLine reports that the show, titled “X-Files: Albuquerque,” has received a script and presentation commitment from Fox. Per the publication the “toon off-shoot” will not revolve around David Duchovny‘s Mulder and Gillian Anderson‘s Scully, but will instead center on an office full of misfit agents who investigate X-Files cases “too wacky, ridiculous, or downright dopey for the original series’ protagonists to bother with.
Per TVLine, original series creator Chris Carter is attached to executive produce the spin-off, though he will not write or serve as showrunner. Netflix’s “Paradise Pd” vets Rocky Russo and Jeremy Sosenko are attached to write the pilot and will serve as executive producers alongside original “X-Files” writer Gabe Rotter.

“Drunk History’s” sixth and most recent season will be the Comedy Central show’s last, Variety has confirmed.
The show had been renewed for a seventh season last year and was in pre-production on that season when the Covid-19 pandemic forced production to stop in March. Later on, Comedy Central decided to pull the plug on the show as the network moves away from live-actions scripted shows in favor of adult animation.
Series creators Derek Waters signed a first-look deal with Comedy Central at the time of the Season 7 renewal and will continue to develop projects at the network.
“Drunk History” has earned 17 Emmy nominations over the course of its run, winning one thus far. It is currently up for three Emmys this year, including one for best variety sketch series.

Comedy Central is shaping up to be one of the television industry’s leaders in new adult animation: The network has announced a reimagining of the cult classic “The Ren & Stimpy Show” as part of its greater overall push into the genre.
The original “The Ren & Stimpy Show” premiered on Nickelodeon in 1991, the same year the network debuted classic kids shows such as “Rugrats” and “Doug.” Though “The Ren & Stimpy Show” was not explicitly aimed at adults, the show was full of dark humor, raunchy sex jokes, and other mature content, which generated some controversy. The series nonetheless was widely praised during its five-season run and remembered as one of Nickelodeon’s standout ’90s shows.
The network offered no details on the upcoming reimagining beyond the fact that it has been greenlit. Comedy Central’s impending reboot won’t be the series’ first; Spike TV rebooted the...

“The Ren & Stimpy Show” is the most recent Viacom throwback getting a new life.
Comedy Central announced Wednesday that it has ordered a revival of the ’90s animated series. The move comes amid a significant push into adult animation at ViacomCBS’ entertainment and youth group, which comprises most of the company’s cable brands and is headed by Chris McCarthy. The unit also on Wednesday revealed that Grant Gish, a veteran of Marvel Studios and Fox Animation, would join as head of adult animation.
The “Ren & Stimpy” revival follows orders for new versions of other classic animated comedies from the erstwhile Viacom’s cable library, including Mike Judge’s “Beavis and Butt-Head”; Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Bill Lawrence’s “Clone High”; and “Jodie,” based on the former MTV series “Daria.”

Exclusive: ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group has appointed former Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox TV animation executive Grant Gish to spearhead the expansion into adult animation.
Gish will lead the new Adult Animation Unit as SVP, Adult Animation, Entertainment & Youth Brands. He starts August 31.
Adult animation has been a priority area for Entertainment & Youth Group President Chris McCarthy, originally at MTV Studios and more recently also at Comedy Central after he took oversight of the comedy-centric cable network in the post-Viacom-CBS merger restructuring late last year.
The strategy so far has involved mining the MTV library of iconic adult animation IP. That includes two reboots with the original series’ creators, Beavis and Butt-Head with Mike Judge and Clone High with Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Bill Lawrence; as well as Jodie, based on the classic MTV series, Daria. When “The Simpsons” premiered in 1989, it was an outlier. Animated shows in primetime were by no means unprecedented — “The Flintstones” broke that barrier in the ’60s — but never before had an animated series aimed at adults resonated so powerfully or had as significant an impact on a network as “The Simpsons” did for Fox. Three decades later, though, such series are having their moment in a big way.
Mike Moon, head of adult animation at Netflix, began his career as an artist on “The Simpsons.” What he’s seen in the years since has been a blossoming of adult animation on U.S. television.
“Adult animation [over] the last 25 years has been a really incredible story,” says Moon, who charts the format’s growth through shows such as “The Simpsons,” Comedy Central’s “South Park,” Fox’s “Family Guy” and Netflix’s “BoJack Horseman,” to a recent crop of new shows.

Yesterday, Comedy Central announced that Beavis and Butt-Head is getting a reboot. The animated series from the early 90s originally ran for eight seasons and across that time, the show amassed a loyal following, one that turned into a cult after the program entered syndication. Are they happy with the news, though? Well, the answer may surprise you.
Facts first. In their statement, Comedy Central said the reboot will be directed by Mike Judge, who was the creator and showrunner of the original series. As if this bit of news wasn’t good enough on its own, the network also revealed it would be producing not one, but two seasons, alongside spinoffs and specials.

MTV Studios is reviving another cult MTV animated series, Clone High. Original series’ creators Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Bill Lawrence are re-teaming on a reimagined version of the 2002 TV series.
There is no network yet for the new Clone High. It could follow two other MTV Studios animated series based on classic MTV titles, Beavis and Butt-Head and Daria spinoff Jodie, which both recently landed at Comedy Central as part of the net’s big push in adult animation.
Lord, Miller and Lawrence are joined on the Clone High reboot by Erica Rivinoja, who was a writer on the original series, widely regarded as a time capsule of the early 2000s with its loving satire and wry parody of emo culture. Rivinoja will serve as showrunner and will co-write the pilot alongside Lord and Miller.

“Beavis and Butt-Head” is coming back. Heh heh heh.
Comedy Central has announced a new deal with original series creator Mike Judge to reimagine MTV’s classic animated comedy. As with the original series, Judge will write and produce the series as well as voice the two dim-witted protagonists.

Created by “Insecure” alum Grace Edwards, who also serves as head writer, the animated comedy centers on Jodie Landon, Daria’s friend at the fictional Lawndale High. “Jodie” picks up with her character graduating from college and entering a complicated world.
Ross voices the title character and serves as an executive producer on the series, which is produced by MTV Studios.

Hollywood’s landscape has changed dramatically since Viacom and CBS were last married in 2005. Now that the two media giants seek a Wall Street reunion, there are endless possibilities for the future of its shared content pie.
Huge action franchises like “Mission: Impossible” and “Transformers” from Paramount Pictures could explore new origin stories or exploit quirky side-characters for streaming series on the CBS over-the-top platform All Access. All Access is also currently building out the “Star Trek” TV universe, with three shows under the franchise’s umbrella set to be on the streaming service in 2020. Signs of synergy are already cropping up as well. CBS, which owns the TV licensing rights to “Star Trek,” gave its blessing for a cartoon take on the sci-fi classic at Nickelodeon this year.
Not only would a flurry of development that leverages the well-known intellectual property of Viacom and CBS pacify shareholders in both companies,...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: What is your favorite teen show of all time? Why?
Ben Travers (@BenTTravers), IndieWire
I presume like many others, my favorite teen show is heavily swayed by when I saw it — so while “Friday Night Lights” is inarguably a better series, my favorite is “The O.C.” While Ryan Atwood was fighting his way into Orange County’s good graces, I was wading through the awkward social structures of a small Midwestern high school, and despite the incredible disparity in wealth, each crush, dance, and trip around the ferris wheel rang all the truer. The setting made for impossibly high melodrama, as parents lost millions and teens took trips to Hollywood to do shots with Paris Hilton, but the smaller, intimate moments between friends resonated just as they were intended to: universally.

Of all the TV shows to get a reboot or spinoff, Daria might be the one I'm most excited about. I was obsessed with the show growing up - I was just 12 when it premiered - and it reminds me of a time before Teen Mom and Teen Wolf, when you could watch shows like The Real World and Singled Out between a string of actual music videos. I could close my bedroom door, settle into my beanbag chair, and spend my evening chuckling at sarcastic, biting one-liners while I probably should have been doing my homework.
So, there was Daria. The show was a spinoff of MTV's other massive hit cartoon Beavis and Butt-Head, in which she appeared as a running character. It followed Daria Morgendorffer and her family's move to Lawndale, where the 16-year-old would begin her sophomore year in high school. In a 1999 New York Times article,...

MTV has enlisted “Black-ish” star Tracee Ellis Ross to voice the lead in its upcoming “Daria” spinoff series, “Jodie,” the network said Thursday.
The first in a planned series of spinoffs based on the iconic ’90s animated series, “Jodie” will center on Daria’s good friend Jodie Landon, a fan-favorite African American character from the original series credited with helping to shape a generation of women. The new series will follow the character “as she comes into her own and enters the workplace in her first post-college job in tech.”
“Insecure” alum Grace Nkenge Edwards is the creator and head writer on the series, with Ross serving as executive producer. MTV’s Trevor Rose, Morgana Rosenberg and Amy Doyle will also executive produce.

Tracee Ellis Ross is set to play a prominent role, both as a star and executive producer, in MTV’s upcoming adult animated series “Jodie.”
The series is a reimagining of the classic animated show “Daria,” and is described as a satire of the post college workplace and personal adventures of Gen Z. “Daria” was itself inspired by MTV’s “Beavis and Butthead,” based on the widespread appeal of the Daria Morgendorffer character whose wry wisdom was beyond her high school years.
The new series will center around Daria’s good friend Jodie Landon (Ellis Ross), an African American character from the original series. Viewers will follow her as she comes into her own and enters the workplace in her first post-college job in tech. Other former students from Lawndale High School will also appear.
MTV originally announced the new series would be a re-imagination of the “Daria” series which would feature the titular character.
