Hammerfall have announced their 13th studio album, Avenge the Fallen, arriving August 9th via Nuclear Blast Records.
The Swedish power metal vets also offered up the lead single “Hail to the King,” a classic mid-tempo heavy metal march with a shimmering vocal performance from armor-clad frontman Joacim Cans.

The song itself was conceived while Hammerfall were on tour, brushing shoulders with some of their fellow metal icons.
“I began working on ‘Hail to the King’ while on tour in the US with Helloween,” recalled guitarist Oscar Dronjak via a press release. “By the end of the tour, I was getting close to wrapping the song up, so straight after the Los Angeles gig I headed to the bus where I worked like a mad man to get the last pieces together.”

One of the latest and most interesting slight trends in Korean cinema is combining genre basis with arthouse aesthetics, particular in sci-fi and horror movies, with titles like “Seire” and “Fallen” being among the most prominent samples. Han Dong-seok also implements a similar approach in “The Sin”, which begins as a film about an experimental film, before it becomes a full-throttle horror, retaining though, the arthouse aesthetic essentially throughout.
The Sin is available from KT Alpha
Si-young has been chosen to play the lead in an experimental art film centered around her dance major. As soon as she arrives in the remote building that is to serve as the main set, a number of unpleasant surprises fall on her (pun intended). As soon as she reaches a building, she witnesses a body falling from the roof next to her. Although it turns out it was a test doll for the shooting,...

Dark Souls, the popular action RPG game from Hidetaka Miyazaki, came out 13 years ago and has since seen the release of two sequels. The game had a positive reception, and its high-difficulty gameplay became the center of discussion. Moreover, the first game in the series is also considered by many to be the best of all.
The Dark Souls series
As players begin their journey in the game by starting a new game, they are given the chance to choose a starting gift that can be of help in the game. The players need to choose their gift from a long list of useful things. However, among all of these items, the most iconic one was a pendant with the description, “Trinket. No effect, but fond memories comfort travelers,” which therefore had an element of mystery around it.

Rihanna‘s songs generally aren’t violent, one of her ballads was once called “Murderer.” Even more surprising than that, the song was inspired by the sound of rock band Evanescence. It’s pretty clear which Evanescence song inspired the “We Found Love” singer.
Rihanna’s song was written by 2 important artists
Stargate is a songwriting duo composed of Mikkel S. Eriksen and Tor E. Hermansen. They have produced numerous hit songs for Rihanna. Primarily, they write dance songs and ballads. During a 2010 interview with Sound on Sound, Eriksen recalled the writing of “Unfaithful.”
“Tor and I created the original track, which was dark and moody, taking our inspiration from the rock band Evanescence,” he recalled. “The song was originally called ‘Murderer.’ The first thing that we had was the piano melody and we created the whole structure of the song with just the piano, and then added the percussion and the strings.

One of Banijay’s scripted centrepieces at the London TV Screenings, the Swedish crime drama “Fallen” (“Sanningen”), sees the first reunion of star actor Sofia Helin, writer Camilla Ahlgren, and Stockholm-based Filmlance International since the multi-season hit crime show “The Bridge” (2011-2018).
Their collaboration has paid off again as “Fallen” has wooed a first batch of global sellers – including MHz Choice for the U.S. and Canal+’s Polar+ for France – and more than 1.1 million combined viewers watched the first episode on Swedish commercial broadcaster TV4 last Christmas.
“This is 1/10of the Swedish population, which is astonishing these days, considering the series is based on an original idea,” said producer Anna Wallmark of Banijay-owned Filmlance.
Created by Ahlgren, who serves as head-writer, next to co-writers Martin Asphaug and Alex Haridi, the six-part series is, however, a very different type of noir to the cross-border iconic “The Bridge,” Lighter, more emotional.

The Lavender Hill Mob, 5.05pm, Film4, Monday, January 22
Some people think of black and white films as boring, artefacts of the past to which they could not possibly relate. There’s nothing like an Ealing comedy to set them right. This one’s a classic, with Alec Guinness’ charming, silver-tongued bank clerk hatching a scheme to embezzle gold by meltimg it down and disguising it in the form of tourist souvenirs. When a party of schoolgirls unwittingly acquire those souvenirs, however, getting them back proves much more of a challenge. Tightly plotted and full of twists and turns, it mingles elements of farce with deliciously dark wit, and there’s no shortage of thrills.

Emma Stone knows exactly the genre Poor Things belongs in. The film from director Yorgos Lanthimos spans genres such as sci-fi, fantasy and dark comedy — and turned heads with its racy sex scenes. But Stone has declared it a rom-com, and explained why in her 2024 Golden Globes speech Sunday.
“I see this as a rom-com, in the sense that Bella falls in life itself, rather than a person. She accepts the good and the bad in equal measure — all of it is important,” said Stone of her character, Bella Baxter, a woman who is brought back to life ala the monster in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The feature has a script from Tony McNamara.
Stone took home the win for best actress in a comedy or musical. The other nominees were Fantasia Barrino (The Color Purple), Jennifer Lawrence (No Hard Feelings), Natalie Portman (May December), Alma Pöysti (Fallen Leaves) and...

If you’re like me and so many other nineties kids, you may remember Eye See You (watch it Here) as that Sylvester Stallone film you saw late in his career sitting on the shelves at your local Blockbuster or Hollywood Video featuring Sly pointing a gun in a snowy landscape looking just as surprised as you to be there with such little fanfare. Stallone belongs on the “Guaranteed to have in-stock or you get a free rental” Holy shit package wall of the video store or at the very least in an interesting role among an all-star cast like he’d been in with Cop Land a few years previous.

"Would you like to go the cinema?" With only a few more days left at the end of 2023, many Best of the Year lists are dropping all over the web. The latest is from the film magazine Little White Lies' announcing their "30 Best Films of 2023" (in text here). Lwl is based in and published in the UK, so their Top 30 is based on UK release dates, including one or two that counted as last year in the US (e.g. Return to Seoul was nominated at the Oscars). But the rest are all 2023 gems and many of them have already been receiving many awards & accolades. In addition to publishing a comprehensive article that includes write-ups on all 30 of their favorite films, they've also released a nice 10-minute long countdown video, mashing up footage from all of the films. I'm very happy to see Poor Things, Priscilla, Oppenheimer, Past Lives, Polite Society,...

As various critics groups and awards bodies dole out their top films of the year, it can be hard to parse which ones are actually worth paying attention to. Following our top 50 films of 2023, one such list has arrived today with Film Comment’s annual end-of-year survey. Revealed at a special live talk last night, Todd Haynes’s May December, Kelly Reichardt’s Showing Up, and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon grabbed the top three spots, while Eduardo Williams’s The Human Surge 3, Lisandro Alonso’s Eureka, and Víctor Erice’s Close Your Eyes topped the best undistributed films.

Established in the 1950s by André Bazin, Joseph-Marie Lo Duca, and Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, France’s Cahiers du cinéma has been a bastion for international film criticism for decades, even amidst recent changes. They’ve now unveiled their predictably stellar top 10 films of 2023 list.
Topping the list is Laura Citeralla’s four-hour epic Trenque Lauquen, while Víctor Erice’s long-awaited return Close Your Eyes and Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall round out the top three. The list also features Aki Kaurismäki’s Fallen Leaves, Catherine Breillat’s Last Summer, and Radu Jude’s Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World.
Cyril Schäublin’s overlooked drama Unrest also got a mention while Pierre Creton’s Un prince and Kelly Reichardt’s Showing Up tied for tenth place. They also have room for one major surprise, this year being Rabah Ameur-Zaïmeche’s Berlinale...

ABC's Will Trent has been a hit since the series began in January.
We love book-to-screen adaptations, and Will Trent Season 1 excelled at building character development, intriguing cases, and strong relationships.
The problem was that only a select few cases followed cases from the books, and the diehard fans knew it.
So what becomes more important -- staying true to the characters or the cases?
In reality, it's probably a combination of both, so we'll analyze what book aspects the series has incorporated well and what we hope they'll include in future seasons.
Book Aspects Incorporated in Will Trent Season 1
Will Trent has balanced incorporating key book aspects and layering characters beautifully. They've made Angie and Amanda more likable by casting excellent actresses like Erika Christensen and Sonja Sohn and softening their personalities.
The Will Trent Series premiere kicked off with the infamous kidnapping of Paul and Abigail Campano's daughter.

You won’t find Evanescence singer Amy Lee chilling in da club with 50 Cent anytime soon. As the goth-rock vocalist explained in a new interview, the rapper “hates [her] guts.”
Fifty’s beef with Lee stems from the time he lost the Grammy for Best New Artist to Evanescence in 2004. Despite not being announced as the winner, 50 Cent still walked across the stage, making for an awkward moment during Evanescence’s acceptance speech.
When asked by Daily Beast about the incident, Lee responded, “50 Cent hates my guts,” adding, “It’s just one of those things… I mean, truthfully, we thought he was going to win, too. It was such a wild night. People are like, ‘What was it like to win a Grammy?’ and I’m like, ‘Stressful!’ I mean, it’s wonderful now, to have them, but it was surreal… I just remember thinking, ‘I don’t even think...

Even by its own ridiculously high standards, 2023 has been one hell of a year for British independent cinema. Whilst Hollywood has been all but shut down by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, over on this side of the pond, it feels like the candle for British indie cinema – and our collective love for those who make it possible – has never burned brighter. As such, it comes as no surprise to see today’s announcement of the nominations for the British Independent Film Awards 2023 filled with wall-to-wall bangers that represent the very best that British filmmaking has to offer.

Europe’s major players in TV and film attending Mipcom Cannes sensed a wave of opportunity coming at them from across the Atlantic, as Hollywood muddles through a period of strategic uncertainty and steep losses from the transition to streaming platforms.
The extended labor strife in the U.S. this year, with the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA waging historic and concurrent strikes, has Euro producers touting the appeal of lensing on the continent with a strong pool of skilled talent accustomed to working at much lower price points.
Also looming over Mipcom was the intense security protocol deployed around the Palais and headlines of bomb scares in France. The country has been on high alert in the wake of Hamas’ attack on Israel on Oct. 7 and the murder of a high school teacher a few days later. Despite the tense geo-political backdrop, the overall mood of marketgoers seemed livelier than last year,...

While Hollywood continues to negotiate with SAG-AFTRA for agreeable terms to the ongoing strike, Gerard Butler is resolving a dispute with producers of Olympus Has Fallen, the actor’s 2013 blockbuster starring Butler, Aaron Eckhart, and Morgan Freeman. Butler settled an Olympus Has Fallen lawsuit on Tuesday over allegations that he’s owed at least $10 million in profits for the film.
Defendants Nu Image and Millennium Media notified the court, saying the deal depends on completing specific terms within 45 days. In 2021, Butler and his production company G-Base Entertainment sued in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleging some film producers had earned tens of millions of dollars but refused to fork over their portion of the prize. Butler says a “comprehensive, premeditated scheme” was enacted to “grossly misrepresent the finances of the film.”

Evanescence are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their seminal 2003 album Fallen with a Super Deluxe Edition box set and expanded vinyl and CD reissues, arriving November 17th via Craft Recordings.
Each format includes various demos, outtakes, B-sides, and live recordings from the Fallen era, including a previously unreleased demo of the band’s massive hit “Bring Me to Life” that can be streamed below.
Amy Lee and company pulled out all the stops for the Super Deluxe Edition box set, which includes the standard 2-lp reissue and a box-set-exclusive cassette featuring unreleased demos and voice notes. It’s a boon for Evanescence completionists, as any Fallen-era rarities and demos have only surfaced on obscure bootlegs up to this point.
Additional ephemera in the box set includes a book featuring new track-by-track notes from Lee, a turntable slipmat emblazoned with the band’s logo, a double-sided poster, and an enamel pin set.

The term "vulgar auteurism" was coined in the early 2010s to describe the work of low art big-budget filmmakers like Michael Bay. I've always felt it was a silly expression, myself. "Auteur" is a loaded word for reasons too complicated to get into here, but for me, "auteur" isn't necessarily synonymous with quality. It simply refers to a storyteller with a clear set of interests and fixations.
In Bay's case, he worships those who wear badges and uniforms for a living, and his craft involves a form of technical maximalism that's come to be known as "Bayhem." As Bay once put it while explaining his love of Robert Wise's classic 1961 musical "West Side Story," "It was all about form, style, how they use the medium. That's what I try to do with my action."
The opening to Bay's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" is a perfect example of what he's talking about.

Staind have fleshed out the details of their forthcoming album, Confessions of the Fallen, which will mark the band’s first new full-length since 2011. The 10-track record will arrive on September 15th via Alchemy Recordings/BMG. In addition, Staind have also debuted a new song off the set, the scorching “Cycle of Hurting.”
“Cycle of Hurting” is classic Staind, with heavy guitars, dark rhythms and Aaron Lewis’ tortured vocals, including some intense roars. “How can I face what’s under the surface / When nothing is working? / How can I break away from the burden / The cycle of hurting?” frontman Aaron Lewis sings in the chorus.
Regarding the dark lyrics of “Cycle of Hurting,” Lewis said in a press release, “I’m still working through my issues. Still working through my problems, and until then I’ll dream of better days. I hope that’s how everybody feels right now…better days are yet to come.

Since the departure of longtime Slipknot keyboardist Craig Jones last month, the band has kept the name of his replacement a mystery. Ironically, one-time mystery Slipknot member Michael “Tortilla Man” Pfaff may have inadvertently revealed the new key player’s identity.
Pfaff posted a selfie on Instagram from backstage at a recent show. In the since-deleted post, Pfaff is standing in front of a clothing rack labeled with the legal names of each member of Slipknot: “Corey” for frontman Corey Taylor, “Sid” for DJ Sid Wilson, “Mick” for guitarist Mick Thomson, and one tag that appears to read “Zac” … only there is no known member of Slipknot with that name.
The Slipknot faithful were quick to jump on the post, capturing a screenshot and posting it to Reddit. The consensus is that the “Zac” in question is journeyman keyboardist Zac Baird, who’s played with Korn and Ghost and has...

Duff McKagan has announced his third solo album, Lighthouse, due October 20th. In advance of its release, the Guns N’ Roses bassist has unveiled the title track.
The 11-song effort ends with three tracks boasting notable guest musicians: “Hope,” featuring McKagan’s Gn’R bandmate Slash; “I Just Don’t Know,” featuring Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell; and “Lighthouse (Reprise)” featuring punk godfather Iggy Pop.
On the title track, McKagan sounds like a punk-rock Bob Dylan as he sings the initial verses over an acoustic guitar line for the first minute or so of the tune. From there, the song kicks in with multi-track vocals and pounding drums for the soaring chorus.
McKagan says of the new album and its theme, “The crashing…. the cresting waves, the falling through of all that surrounds you. Life sometimes tosses us around, and we feel the want of comfort and the pull of home.

Guns N’ Roses’ bassist, Duff McKagan, wants your guiding light on “Lighthouse,” the gentle title track from his upcoming solo album. “Won’t you be my lighthouse?” he sings over a gospel backdrop of organ and backup vocalists. “Give me sight and lead me on/Oh, shine on me, my lighthouse/And dry my aching bones.” The music then shifts gears and becomes more uplifting as McKagan leads a choir singing “Shine, shine, shine,” building bigger and bigger. The full album will shine its light on Oct. 20.

Anatomy of a Fall
Competition
Starring a sensational Sandra Hüller as a German novelist on trial for the murder of her husband, French director Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or winner is gripping and gratifyingly rich: part legal procedural, part portrait of a complicated woman, part snapshot of a marriage on the brink and part coming-of-age narrative. Above all, Anatomy of a Fall is about the essential unknowability of a person, of a relationship, and the perilous impossibility of trying to understand — whether it’s a child puzzling over his parents or a courtroom straining to make sense of an inscrutable suspect. — Jon Frosch
Anselm
Special Screenings
Wim Wenders’ latest 3D documentary offers a mesmerizing cinematic catalog of German painter-sculptor Anselm Kiefer’s deeply tactile, maximalist oeuvre. As in Pina, Wenders’ luminous 2011 tribute to the late dancer-choreographer Pina Bausch, the director makes the best possible case for art house theaters...
