- A man is found in the men's room of a bar dead in a pool of his own blood. It is later suggested he has been murdered.
- A man beats the young man he is raising as his son. The son is left with a bloody nose. After the woman believed to be the young man's mother intervenes, the older man pulls a gun and orders both to undress and have sex. Later the man orders them to stop, and when they don't do so fast enough, he fires the gun to amplify the threat.

- Many scenes take place in a bar where the female lead works and her husband drinks. The husband drinks a lot at the bar. Their apparent son drinks a beer at home. A patron of the bar gets very drunk and vomits in the men's room. A woman is offered a six pack of beer while the police question her, although the police do not join in the drinking. She complains that she prefers Samuel Adams to the local beer she is offered, but she does drink a couple of bottles.
