You can call the DC superhero movies a lot of things, but “consistent” isn’t one of them. Even the intentionally interconnected films of the DC Extended Universe vary wildly and unpredictably in quality, with instant classics like “Wonder Woman” and “Shazam!” followed up by giant misfires like “Wonder Woman 1984” and “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” (and those were from the same filmmakers).
So after “The Flash” turned out be a historic disaster on many levels, you could be forgiven for wanting give up on this mixed bag of a franchise as-is and wait patiently for the next reboot. Or, failing that, the next-next reboot, because if there’s one thing DC loves it’s completely redoing a superhero universe, over and over again in every medium.
But that’s a pretty rotten state of mind with which to enter a theater showing “Blue Beetle,” which is a delightful...

Sharon Stone became a generational icon due to her daring performance in Basic Instinct. But was far from a household name when the film was shot, which allowed Carolco Pictures to pay her drastically less than her co-star Michael Douglas.
When Stone was invited to attend the Oscars, she even had trouble finding a dress she could afford.

“The Sound of Philadelphia,” a documentary on the 1970s “Philly Soul” sound and its masterminds Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff and Thom Bell, is coming from Warner Music Entertainment, Warner Chappell Music, and Imagine Documentaries, in partnership with Jigsaw Productions, the companies announced on Wednesday. The lushly orchestrated but soulful sound — exemplified by songs like “Love Train” by the O’Jays, “If You Don’t Know Me Now” by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, “Me and Mrs. Jones” by Billy Paul, and “Tsop” by Mfsb and the Three Degrees – famously known for its use as the Soul Train theme song.dominated U.S. radio in the mid-1970s and influenced all of the R&b that has followed, perhaps most immediately with David Bowie’s “Young Americans” album, and most recently with Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak’s Soul Sonic.

Domestic theaters, now mostly reopen even with five new studio movies in the last three weeks, could only muster a total gross of $45 million this past weekend. That’s less than a quarter of what the same weekend in 2019 took in. That week was dominated by “Toy Story 4.” Disney released the Pixar sequel targeting the Father’s Day audience. That timing only added to an already monster hit that took in $121 million initially, and $434 million domestic all told.
This weekend, two new films were timed to Father’s Day, at least in part. Unfortunately for struggling theaters, neither had them in mind.
“Luca,” Pixar’s latest, debuted on Disney+ free for subscribers (unlike some other recent Premium VOD offerings). No viewership reports have emerged. But the figure might have been in the millions just in the U.S. And with the low end of a Pixar opening this century at $39 million,...

Natalie Portman is planning on getting jacked for Thor: Love and Thunder. The actress elaborated on her fitness plans for the upcoming movie in a recent Instagram chat with Serena Williams, saying that filming hasn’t started yet, giving her more time to make the gains she wants to make.
“She’s actually The Mighty Thor. The comics had the female Thor when Jane becomes Thor, and she’s The Mighty Thor. We haven’t started. More time to get jacked. Which I have not. I’ve got the carbo-loading down, but not the exercise part. Obviously everything is weird because of pandemic time, who knows what’s happening. It will be exciting and I’m interested to see if I can gain muscle.”

Hello! It’s been a while since we found out that Disney+ UK’s launch would be running around five months behind its debut in the Us and we’ve certainly had a grumble about it, as we’re fond of doing here on days with ‘y’s’ in them, but the streaming service is finally coming to this green and, er, pleasant land later this month.
Looking ahead to what we can expect to find on the platform, we’ve grabbed an official list of movies, TV series and specials streaming on Disney+ UK at launch, and hopefully you’ll find something that excites you on it. If not? Ehh, there are always those other ten bajillion streaming providers to choose from.

Welcome to this week’s Nxt review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and Bob Crane was beaten to death in 1978… whoops, wrong one. I gotta get that delete button already. Nxt looks to be eventful this week, so let’s see how well every-thing goes.
Match #1: Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch def. The Mighty The following is courtesy of WWE.com:
On the road to establishing themselves as the premier tag team in Nxt, Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch continued their tour de force this week. It was put up or shut up for the bruisers-in-arms, as they went up against the maestros of underhanded maneuvers, The Mighty. While Shane Thorne & Nick Miller used their signature sly yet calculated double-team tactics to wear down Lorcan & Burch’s combined brute force, such as tossing the bruisers into each other whenever the momentum shifted, the effectiveness eventually grew thin. When...

Match #1: Nikki Cross def. Mercedes Martinez The following is courtesy of WWE.com:
Nikki Cross and her brand of chaos opened this week’s Nxt, but this time Nxt’s Twisted Sister engaged in a fierce battle against former Mae Young Classic competitor Mercedes Martinez, who recently put on a classic against Meiko Satomura in the tournament’s Second Round. Stepping inside the yellow ropes this week, The Latina Sensation carried that same energy, along with presenting a massive hurdle for Nxt’s Twisted Sister.
In a true battle of brute force and unhinged aggression, the two brawlers vigorously (and visibly) pushed each other to their limits. When Cross attempted a sleeper hold, Martinez thrust her into the turnbuckle. When Martinez locked in a suffocating guillotine,...

Christmas may be more than a month away, but that isn’t stopping streaming platforms from adding some holiday cheer to their November lineups.
Beginning with the animated film “Angela’s Christmas” on Nov. 1, Netflix is adding several holiday movies to its streaming slate, including “The Holiday Calendar,” “The Princess Switch,” and “A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding.” Hulu and Amazon Prime are also following suit with “A Cinderella Christmas” on Nov. 15 and “Christmas With the Kranks” on Nov. 1, respectively.
November is also seeing the premiere of several platform originals, including the final season of Netflix’s “House of Cards” and Julia Roberts’ Amazon Prime debut, “Homecoming.” The documentary “McQueen” is also joining Amazon’s slate while Netflix will launch “Doctor Strange,” “Sixteen Candles,” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.” Hulu will see a similarly large influx of new films, including “Goldeneye,” “Amelie,” and “Kick-Ass.”

Match #1: Lars Sullivan versus Victor Orchant The following is courtesy of WWE.com:
Lars Sullivan may have thought he put his troubles with EC3 behind him when he barraged The Top One Percent in a backstage ambush weeks ago, but it was no such luck for the Rocky Mountain behemoth. A vengeance-minded EC3 made his presence felt during The Freak’s match tonight against Victor Orchant. The interruption stoked the flames of EC3 and Sullivan’s raging rivalry, but it was also a saving grace for Orchant, who was in the process of being mauled by The Freak when EC3 arrived. After Sullivan threw Orchant clear out of the ring, EC3 ran in and landed shots on the Rocky Mountain monster, ejecting Sullivan from the squared circle. Nxt...

Match #1: Street Profits def. The Mighty The following is courtesy of WWE.com:
The Mighty were out to make The Street Profits pay after Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford’s partying caused the “Aussie Action Heroes” to lose to Heavy Machinery two weeks ago. As is their new M.O., Shane Thorne & Nick Miller bent (and outright broke) the rules whenever they could, allowing them to quench the Profits’ red-hot start (which included a special shout-out to Wakanda). Thorne & Miller smothered Dawkins and used quick tags to cut off the ring on The Curse of Greatness.
Dawkins eventually broke free and tagged in Ford, who lit up both Mighty Superstars with clotheslines.

Match #1: Dakota Kai beat Santana Garrett – Women’s Match The following is courtesy of WWE.com:
Dakota Kai had her work cut out for her against fellow former Mae Young Classic competitor Santana Garrett. Yet, with Lacey Evans taunting Kai over recent losses, the Kiwi Superstar refused to be anything less than victorious tonight. Garrett contorted and stretched Kai’s body with submission holds, including an artfully applied Muta Lock, but The Captain of Team Kick turned things around with a step-up enzuigiri. Kai then demolished Garrett with a pair of boots in the corner before putting her away with a flipping backstabber that Nigel McGuinness called the “Kai De Grâce.”
Kai continues to transform from doe-eyed to laser-focused before the Nxt Universe’s eyes. But will her latest win do...

In 2004, Sharon Stone won the Best Guest Drama Actress Emmy Award for her scene-stealing turn as attorney Sheila Carlisle on “The Practice.” This year, with her acclaimed performance in Steven Soderbergh‘s six-part HBO miniseries “Mosaic,” Stone is well-positioned for a return to the Emmys, this time in Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress.
In “Mosaic,” Stone portrays Olivia Lake, a successful children’s book author and illustrator living an extravagant, if lonesome existence in the ski resort town of Summit, Utah. She crosses paths with the handsome artist and bartender Joel (Garrett Hedlund) and, hoping their friendship might blossom into something more romantic, invites him to rent out space in her lavish home. During this time, Olivia also meets the charming Eric (Frederick Weller) who, unbeknownst to her, is a con man employed by a neighbor hoping to force her to sell the property.

“Dark City” was released on February 27, 1998, and it helped me fall in love with movies. It also sparked my interest in awards. During the same period I was wrestling with continued Emmy snubs for “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Dark City” made me wonder how the Oscars could miss the boat on what is still one of the most visually and narratively innovative films I’ve seen. So on its 20th anniversary I decided to revisit the underrated science-fiction gem, which deserved Oscars 20 years ago.
“Dark City” was a unique amalgam of genres with elements of murder mystery, film noir, horror and sci-fi dystopia, using those tropes to examine human memory and how we construct and perform our identities. It was undoubtedly a tough sell for New Line Cinema, and even tougher when you consider that at the time “Titanic” was still swimming circles around other releases at the box office.

Harry Dean Stanton has died at the age of 91, it was confirmed over the weekend.
Actor Harry Dean Stanton died of natural causes in Los Angeles on Friday September 15th, his agent John Kelly announced. He was 91.
Stanton, who made his breakthrough in Wim Wenders’ Paris, Texas, submerged himself in over 250 movies since he began acting in the 1950s. That didn’t make him any less unforgettable, putting his subtle stamp on such films as Cool Hand Luke (1967), Two-Lane Blacktop (1971), Godfather II (1974), Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979) and John Carpenter’s Escape From New York (1981). Plus he taught Emilio Estevez how to boost cars in the cult classic Repo Man.
Stanton hit the mainstream in John Hughes’ Pretty In Pink (1986), he played Molly Ringwald’s unemployed father.
He played against Jack Nicholson, a lifelong friend, in The Missouri Breaks and Bob Rafelson’s Man Trouble. He also appeared in The Mighty,...

On the last quiet weekend before elevated titles enter the fray, M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split” (Universal) gets a shot of repeating #1 for the third week, with the only significant contender being “Rings” (Paramount), yet another horror franchise entry.
In addition to “Split,” “Rings” will battle “Hidden Figures,” “La La Land,” and the second weekend of “A Dog’s Purpose” (Universal) for positions among the top six. There’s also “The Space Between Us” (Stx), the second science-fiction romance after “Passengers” in under two months. None of these films are likely to bring in even $15 million, and not all are guaranteed to top $10 million.
Super Bowl weekend is reliably one of the lowest grossing of the year. Like other weak weekends (post Labor Day, some Halloweens, early December), there’s an element of self-fulfilling prophecy as studios avoid it for top releases. Still, free from direct competition, it’s a...

Sharon Stone is no stranger to delivering powerhouse performances as seen in The Mighty, Bobby and Casino, which earned her an Oscar nomination, as well as on TV in The Practice and Law & Order: Svu.
After a short break from the big screen, the 58-year-old actress is back with several new films, including spring’s Mothers and Daughters and the new working-class drama, Life on the Line, which co-stars John Travolta, Devon Sawa and Kate Bosworth.
In the Lionsgate Premiere film about linemen who put their life on the line to keep the electric grid running, Stone plays an emotionally-exhausted mother to Duncan (Sawa). And Et has an exclusive first look at a devastating scene she shares with her on-screen son. (Watch above.)

So, I wasn’t here last week. Some of you may have noticed. So, where was I? At the Baltimore Comic Con (Bcc), which was dandy, and I enjoyed it very much. Usually when I’m gone somewhere around the deadline for this column, I’m supposed to get it in earlier and most times I do. This time? Just screwed up the time. What can I say? I’m (mostly) human.
Lots of my fellow columnists here at ComicMix have already done their columns this week on the Bcc last week. Mike Gold, Emily Whitten, Martha Thomases, and Molly Jackson all contributed. Marc Allan Fishman wrote about an aspect of the Bcc and he wasn’t even there. Makes you wonder what I could add to the (comic)mix. The likes of King Barrett and Neville are impressing in the WWE right now but the history of British wrestling goes back much further than the occasional breakthroughs in Connecticut.

Perhaps the most remarkable was Les Kellett. "He was never the top man, but he was always the one people talked about and the one people wanted to see," screenwriter and director Harvey Auzorst tells us, explaining how his film Kellett came to be in development.

There is not a cynical or mean-spirited moment in Peter Chelsom's new film "Hector and the Search For Happiness," and the film's observations about life are in some ways so direct, so fundamental, that it would be easy to shrug it off and laugh at its sincerity. Happiness is a subject I've been thinking about quite a bit this year. At 44, I find it elusive, temporary. I've upended my life this year, moving out of my house, negotiating a divorce, building a new life to share with my kids, and even exploring the notion of new love, and all of it has been life-altering and shattering and scary and exhilarating, and above all else, necessary. Completely and totally necessary. When I was a young man, I saw happiness as something that landed on you, something that was simply a by-product of living life. I took happiness for granted, and...

James Gandolfini‘s final film opens this weekend. Written by Dennis Lehane, The Drop, is a crime drama starring Tom Hardy and multiple pitbulls, and has been getting strong reviews after premiering at the Toronto Film Festival. After the actor’s sudden death in 2013 we’ve spent the past year celebrating the abundance of memorable film and television roles he left us with — many of which you can watch by simply logging into your Netflix account.
Below are eight films you can stream from the comfort of your home, office, or park bench (bearing said park has WiFi) this weekend. And why not? The weather’s probably going to be crummy anyway.
Not Fade Away (2012)
Written and directed by Sopranos creator David Chase, Gandolfini plays the conservative New Jersey father to a creatively driven son who’s discovering rock and roll during the ’60s. (This one gets extra points for its killer soundtrack.

Hector and the Search for Happiness, based on the best-selling novel of the same name, is the kind of adaptation that could turn into a new favorite for millions, or completely ruin the book for everyone, without a lot of room to fall anywhere in-between. There are tone requirements, a wide range of emotion, and supporting characters that need to be worked in to things just so.
The big questions that creates in this case revolve around director Peter Chelsom, and Simon Pegg. I’m generally fan of Pegg, but can he go everywhere this film will need him to, and go to all of those places effectively? I’m not sure. Chelsom is a different case, and isn’t a name that most people are going to be able to easily associate with his body of work as a director. The Mighty is an under-appreciated gem, and Serendipity is...

Director Peter Chelsom on Hector, Pegg, Miley Cyrus, Syd Field, live action PG movies and Being There...
Peter Chelsom started life as an actor, before moving behind the camera when he hit 30. His films have included Hear My Song, Funny Bones, The Hannah Montana Movie, Serendipity and The Mighty. His latest? The big screen take on Hector And The Search For Happiness. And over a bowl of soup, he spared us some time for a chat...
Let's start at the beginning! I’m a great fan of your first film, Hear My Song, which was always a bit of a tricky one to track down.
Thank you! There was a DVD re-release, that was really did well. They did a great job on it.
Well, let’s start there. How much control do you have over your films once they’ve left a cinema, and headed to home formats?
It varies.

If you're like us, you can't wait for the first day of every month, because you know that Netflix is going to add a ton of new movies and TV shows. You refresh your account over and over again at midnight, hoping that those titles listed in the "Recently Added" section update with something new and exciting rather than the same ol' titles you've been staring at for the last four weeks.
Well, lo and behold, we've gathered the most exciting movies and TV shows being added to America's most popular streaming service, straight from Netflix themselves.
"Rocky" fans will be pumped to know that the first five boxing flicks (sorry, "Rocky Balboa" fans) will be added August 1, joining other '70s, '80s, and '90s movie favorites "Face/Off" (slow-motion doves!), "Mad Max" (apocalyptic leather!), "Spice World" (spice up your life!), "The Birdcage" (Calista Flockhart was in this,...

Simon Pegg is back with his special brand of happiness, this time as a psychiatrist in the throes of professional existential crisis, who sets out to taste the world for himself and learn just what it is that makes people happy. The film is based on a popular novel by French psychiatrist François Lelord, Le voyage d'Hector ou la recherche du bonheur ("Hector's Voyage or the Search for Happiness"), a thought-provoking book on the psychology of happiness, written for laypeople. The film seems like it might be a bit... mushy... and director Peter Chelsom certainly has a record of feel good fare with the likes of The Mighty, Serendipity, the Richard Gere-starring remake of Shall We Dance? and, wait for it, Hannah Montana: The Movie to his credit. However, the cast in this includes...

The cast for Marvel's Daredevil series seems to be coming together nicely, and today we've learned that one of the stars of The Mighty Ducks, Elden Henson, has been cast in the show. He will be joining Charlie Cox, Rosario Dawson, and Vincent D'Onofrio, who is playing the crime boss Kingpin.
According to to The Wrap, Henson is expected to play the best friend of Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil (Cox), Foggy Nelson. Here's some information on the character thanks to Marvel:
"Franklin P. Nelson, nicknamed 'Foggy,' is the son of Rosalind 'Razor' Sharpe, a ruthless attorney who deserted her husband not long after their son was born. Nelson rarely saw his mother during his youth, instead being raised by his father and stepmother. Nevertheless, his mother's career motivated him to study pre-Law at State University, where he quickly befriended his roommate, Matt Murdock, whom he eventually followed...
