Luca Guadagnino’s tennis relationship drama “Challengers” (Amazon MGM) opens Friday amidst chatter that it represents the rarest of films — a wide-release American sex sizzler, an erotically charged story with young actors with sexual impulses central to its plot.
The marketing forebears for “Challengers” are akin to movies that we’ve not seen in a long time like “Carnal Knowledge,” “Body Heat,” “Don’t Look Now,” and “Fatal Attraction.” These films, where sex can be sweaty and dangerous, were elevated by big stars who dared to play off their images. Other examples include Kevin Costner (“No Way Out”), Debra Winger (“An Officer and a Gentleman”), Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver (“The Year of Living Dangerously”), Jane Fonda (“Klute”), and Warren Beatty.
In the “Challengers” press tour, Zendaya (also a producer here) — with six of her previous seven live-action theatrical releases having domestic grosses of $100 million or more — took pains to dispel...

A few weeks ago I received a rather intriguing invite. Vvs Films, one of the biggest film distributors in Canada, invited JoBlo.com to participate in a press junket for the new film, The King Tide, which was to be held in Newfoundland. As a proud Canadian, I was excited, as I had never visited the Maritimes before.
Indeed, the studio seemed to be rolling out the red carpet for the assembled press, with us being treated to a wonderful experience in St. John’s, Newfoundland, which included me being “screeched in” (watch it right here) at a local pub (located on St. George Street which has the highest amount of per capita bars per street in the country), which included drinking rum (count me in!), kissing a cod and eating baloney (ewww – gross). We also got to take a trip to scenic Bonavista, close to where the film was shot.

New data from Ampere Analysis shows the Apple TV+ library grew by 25% between February and March thanks to the addition of licensed movies.
The strategy for Apple TV+ has always been clear, even if outside observers didn’t necessarily agree with it. The streamer would showcase only Apple originals, a testament to the high production values and A-level stars the company is able to bring to its shows thanks to revenue generated by its device retailing segment. But that all changed in early March when the streamer imported more than 50 movies created by various other Hollywood studios for a short window. New data from Ampere Analysis suggests that perhaps Apple may not want to be so hasty in letting its next batch of licensed titles go if it decides to repeat the experiment again.

Marla Mindelle, who starred in and co-created the Off-Broadway hit Titanique, is debuting her new musical The Big Gay Jamboree Off-Broadway this fall.
The show is co-written by Mindelle and is described as a parody of musical theater itself. Sue Wagner, John Johnson, and Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap are serving as producers of the show.
In 2019, LuckyChap had announced a deal to produce the title as a movie musical for Paramount, however that has not yet materialized. Their involvement in the stage show marks LuckyChap’s first foray into theater.
The Big Gay Jamboree features a book by Mindelle and by Jonathan Parks-Ramage (author of Yes, Daddy), with music and lyrics by Mindelle and Philip Drennen and direction and choreography by Connor Gallagher (Beetlejuice on Broadway). The production describes it as a show that centers on Stacey, who wakes up hungover, “in the most terrifying place of all: an Off-Broadway musical.

Deemed one of the greatest actors in Hollywood, Denzel Washington exudes a classic movie star aura. Renowned for his enduring charm and the seamless blend of irony and sincerity in his iconic roles, Washington embodies the timeless essence of a Hollywood legend. He is also known for avoiding the franchise films, with the notable exception of The Equalizer trilogy.
A still from The Equalizer trilogy | Sony Pictures
He has also been commended for the same by being named the second-highest-grossing actor to not star in a franchise, following the Titanic star Leonardo DiCaprio. However, Washington did not seem to mind the ranking, as he responded with a touch of wit.

In a conversation with ScreenRant, Denzel Washington expressed his disinterest in sequels and potential franchise films, as he highlighted his approach of focusing on each film individually rather than considering potential sequels.

James Cameron explores in detail how the Titanic sunk in his 1997 ultra-blockbuster "Titanic." It sideswiped an iceberg on its starboard side, tearing a hole in the hull. The ship began taking on water and the bow began to sink, lifting the stern into the air. The entire ship cracked in half like a Twix bar. The front half continued to sink, shooting to the ocean floor. The stern stuck was next to go, and -- because it was already half-submerged -- stuck straight up out of the water, almost vertically, like a tower. It, too, then slid beneath the waves. It took about two hours and 40 minutes for the ship to sink entirely.
Cameron compresses that sinking time into about an hour of film, careful to dramatize every detail of the ship's final moments. In the final phase of the ship's sinking -- when the stern was standing like a...

Jack and Rose’s tragic romance in Titanic is considered to be one of the greatest love stories. James Cameron’s epic disaster film was known for its amazing practical and visual effects but has become a modern classic due to Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet’s acclaimed performances as the leading couple.
Though Cameron’s ambitious project runs over three hours, the filmmaker still had some deleted scenes on the cutting room floor. One of these scenes saw Jack and Rose singing ‘Come Josephine’ after their Irish Dance at the third class section. Fans were quick to notice that the song was hummed by the duo at different points in the film, including its heartbreaking ending.

James Cameron has backed a new UK film studio and said it could act as a base for his technology training center, but the £750M ($927M) Marlow Film Studios still requires a planning greenlight and is proving controversial in its local area.
According to the Financial Times, the triple Oscar-winner has written to Buckinghamshire Council in support of the plans in the past few weeks and said it could be a potential UK and European base and training centre for Lightstorm3D, a company Cameron has set up to develop tools and technology for movies.
Cameron said the 22.5% of global box office the UK delivered in 2023 will “grow as a result” of Marlow, which is in Buckinghamshire, South East England.
“But embracing that opportunity necessitates support and boldness in thinking,” the Ft reported Cameron wrote. “The next iteration of screen storytelling requires a purpose-built working space of exceptional quality, and trained professionals.

The trailer for Deadpool & Wolverne’s second trailer was just posted hours ago by Ryan Reynolds. Although this might be the pretty first time that a trailer for a trailer has been released, fans are hardly surprised since it is Reynolds we are talking about. When Disney purchased the 20th Century Fox library in 2019, it caused some consternation among cineastes. The Fox catalog was vast and impressive, containing tons of indelible classics and even more titles waiting deep inside the studio's archive. 20th Century Fox was formed in 1935 and quickly became one of the "big five" studios that dominated the film industry for decades. Fox hadn't seen a shake-up this dramatic since 1985 when ultra-conservative media mogul Rubert Murdoch bought a controlling share of the company from Marvin Davis.
When Disney made its purchase, many film fans wondered if Fox's old classics would be made more widely available through the about-to-launch Disney+. When the streaming service debuted with a paltry 500 titles, cineastes were aghast. Why buy all those Fox titles if you're not going to distribute them?
That, however, was merely the end of the road for Fox. For its 83-year life, the studio went through many massive,...

When Ilana Wolpert was studying English literature at the prestigious Duke University, she never imagined that one of her first loves – Shakespeare – would lead directly to writing R-rated movies.
But the writer found her life changed when she took a screenwriting class in her senior year, and her love for the classics led her to adapt Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing into a contemporary rom-com. The enemies-to-lovers romance became Anyone But You, and it's coming to streamers this Tuesday.
What's It About?
Ben and Bea meet in a coffee shop and form an instant connection. They spend a perfect day together – but the next morning their wires get crossed, their defenses go up, and they both blame each other for the relationship failing.
Six months later, Bea's sister is getting married. Ben's connection to the family means that they end up on the same flight, and start pushing each other's buttons right away.

TriStar Pictures believed they had the surest of things when they hired Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin to make the first Hollywood "Godzilla" flick. The duo had just delivered the biggest film of 1996 in "Independence Day," and appeared poised to become a blockbuster brand name on par with Steven Spielberg and James Cameron. Every studio in town wanted to make their next smash hit. But this is where the trouble started: TriStar wanted Emmerich and Devlin to make its next smash hit.
The 1998 iteration of "Godzilla" did not originate with Emmerich and Devlin. TriStar came very close to greenlighting it in 1994 with Jan De Bont (hot off the success of "Speed") directing a screenplay by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (who would eventually make their franchise fortune on the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series), which would've placed it in direct competition with "Independence Day" during the summer of 1996. So this all felt awfully fortuitous.

According to Zack Snyder, one of the most significant Dceu storylines seems to have originated from none other than Oscar-winning star Leonardo DiCaprio. The 49-year-old actor was once considered for the role of Lex Luthor, Superman’s greatest enemy. In an exclusive interview with Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the director disclosed that he had a meeting with the Titanic star to discuss the role in his 2016 superhero flick, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
However, Jesse Eisenberg ultimately won the role. Snyder also recalled that DiCaprio came up with the plan to pit Henry Cavill’s Superman against the Justice League. Sadly, the Dceu timeline came to an end in 2023 (Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom), capping ten years of superhero films that started with Snyder’s Man of Steel (2013).

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘s Lex Luthor could have looked very different.
Director Zack Snyder stopped by the Happy Sad Confused podcast to promote the upcoming second part of his Rebel Moon films for Netflix. Over the course of the conversation, host Josh Horowitz asked him if there was any truth to the fact that the studio wanted Tom Hanks or Adam Driver for the villain role.
“I think I did talk to Adam on the phone, yeah,” he said of the rumored castings. “Leonardo DiCaprio, I talked to him about it.”
While Snyder ultimately went with Jesse Eisenberg as Lex, starring opposite Henry Cavill’s Superman and Ben Affleck’s Batman, he revealed the Titanic star “had a lot of great ideas, actually, just in the meeting.

At the 95th Academy Awards (honoring the cinematic achievements of 2022), there were two notable surprises in the technical categories. The first occurred when “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” nabbed the Oscar for Best Costume Design, beating out the the heavily favored “Elvis” as well as “Babylon.” The second occurred when “All Quiet on the Western Front” claimed the prize for Best Production Design, defeating Gold Derby odds leader “Babylon” in addition to both “Elvis” and “Avatar: The Way of Water.” Anyone who predicted either of those two upsets outsmarted the vast majority of Gold Derby users.
At last month’s 96th Academy Awards, we didn’t see any similar out-of-left-field choices in any of the tech categories. The closest thing to a curveball was arguably “The Zone of Interest” winning the Oscar for Best Sound, overcoming the night’s eventual Best Picture champion, “Oppenheimer.” So how did “Zone” do it? Here are five reasons why.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are celebrating in style following another Wrexham promotion to a better league.
Reynolds co-owns the club with fellow actor McElhenney. The team secured promotion to League Two last year. Now, a 6-0 victory over Forest Green Rovers on Saturday means they will play in League One next season.
On X, formerly Twitter, Reynolds wrote: “A few years ago, if you told me I would be crying tears of joy over a football match taking place in North Wales, you would be Rob McElhenney. Congrats to Wrexham and to my co-chairman in crime. Double up the town! This is the ride of our lives.”
He later posted a celebration of McElhenny’s birthday, allegedly underwriting a trip to the Titanic to grab a few bottles of Wrexham Lager for a toast. See the results below.
Since McElhenney and Reynolds’ bought the team in February 2021, they have boosted its worldwide attention.

Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o said that when word came her way that she’d been selected to receive CinemaCon’s star of the year award during the closing night Big Screen Achievement Awards, it led her to ponder what cinema has meant to her.
“One of my strongest memories from my adolescence came to mind,” said the 41-year-old actress while accepting the trophy inside the Colosseum at Caesars Palace on Thursday night. “My very first date was going to see a movie at the cinema in Nairobi, Kenya, where I grew up. I was 16. Not only was I going out with this boy I liked for the first time, but I would be watching my crush Leonardo DiCaprio in none other than Titanic.
Nyong’o, honored for her upcoming turn in Paramount Pictures’ thriller A Quiet Place: Day One, said she was beyond excited to see DiCaprio in the 1997 disaster epic from James Cameron.

Save for Tom Cruise and maybe Kevin Feige, no name carries more weight in the world of tentpole filmmaking than James Cameron.
In December 2022, more than a decade after the writer/director’s triumphant “Avatar” became the highest grossing movie of all time, Cameron’s sequel and visual effects marvel “Avatar: The Way of Water” provided a massive splash of ticket sales for a drought-ridden box office. It’s now the third highest grossing film of all time, and its run propped up theaters in what IndieWire’s Tom Brueggeman described as a good start to the 2023.
That’s standard fare for Cameron, of course. He first made box office history in 1997 with the epic historical fiction romance “Titanic”: a cinematic knockout that ran in theaters for nearly ten months and remains the fourth highest grossing movie ever made. He won Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Editing at the year’s Academy Awards.

Kate Winslet is an actress whose performances aren’t defined so much by their rigid technicality, but by their manner of presence. Much like the work of a classical Hollywood movie star, Kate Winslet’s power lies more in the brusque delivery of a cutting line or a piercing glance. There’s a looseness writhing to get out beneath the false composure of her characters, who are almost always marked by their prickly defiance and wit.
Whether bound inside a corset, or to the social and gender mores of a period setting (into which she’s often typecast), there’s a feral charm to her approach. In a movie like “Titanic,” Winslet’s Rose Dewitt Bukater doesn’t quite fit into the stifling world of the early-20th-century upper class; that idea is taken to more contemporary extremes in a movie like “Revolutionary Road” as April Wheeler, a...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains details from the series finale of Curb Your Enthusiasm on HBO.
Curb Your Enthusiasm is over, for now, at least.
The fact that the final scene was on an airplane, with Susie Greene, played by Susie Essman, shouting at Larry, as always, felt symbolic, given that landing the plane for a series finale can be somewhat turbulent.
But Sunday’s finale came full circle from another major finale that Larry David was involved in. “This is how we should have ended the [Seinfeld] finale,” David tells Jerry Seinfeld after he got him out of jail.
Executive producer Jeff Schaffer and Essman spoke with Deadline the morning after the night before, discussing how they wrapped it up, how they feel about wrapping it up, being finally able to talk about it, how regularly Jb Smoove is pitching his own Leon spinoff and whether it really is...

Update: Producer and Archivist Robert Harris has reached out to JoBlo to add his take on James Cameron’s 4K releases, saying, “These films have not been restored in any way, nor was restoration needed. There should be no problems with the original elements. The work performed was a re-visualization. An entirely new digital product, which (to varying degrees of success) appears to have achieved Mr. Cameron’s goals. If these were attempts at restoration, they would fail in all regards. All best, Robert Harris.”
Not long after reaching out to us, Harris sent a follow-up email with more comments:

The long-gestating sci-fi remake of Fantastic Voyage, which could pair James Cameron with Guillermo del Toro, is still on the cards, according to the Avatar director.
According to James Cameron, his long-gestating remake of Fantastic Voyage is still happening. That in itself is newsworthy given how long Cameron has been talking about this project. The filmmaker wrote a screenplay for the film decades ago, but in the wake of Titanic's success in 1997, he became transfixed with realising the alien world of Pandora onscreen and with the exception of a couple of documentary films, has only released two Avatar films in the quarter century since.

James Cameron has hailed 'Dune: Part Two' as "pure cinema".The 'Titanic' filmmaker was very impressed by Denis Villeneuve's sequel - the highest-grossing film of 2024 so far - and he believes that the 'Sicario' director has been far more faithful to Frank Herbert's 1965 novel with his movies than David Lynch was in his "disappointing" 1984 picture.Speaking to the French publication Le Figaro, James said: "David Lynch's adaptation was disappointing. It was missing the power of Herbert's novel."Villeneuve's films are much more convincing. The characters are sketched out, they are very identifiable. It's pure cinema. I speak regularly to Denis, filmmaker to filmmaker. We record our conversations, like (Francois) Truffaut and (Alfred) Hitchcock."Cameron, 69, is the latest esteemed director to laud 'Dune: Part Two' after Steven Spielberg recently described the epic as one of the best sci-fi films he has ever seen.

The Fabelmans (2022), arguably Steven Spielberg’s most personal movie to date, had everyone talking. Starring Michelle Williams and Paul Dano, it’s a semi-autobiographical tale that’s loosely based on the director’s childhood and his early years as a film director.
However, Spielberg’s reluctance to delve into his family’s history stemmed from worries that his parents would suffer, so the project was dropped for twenty years. Regardless, with seven Oscar nominations upon its release, The Fabelmans has generated a lot of Oscar buzz.
James Cameron’s Avatar
Does that encourage other filmmakers to document their own life stories on screen? Well, the director of Avatar and Titanic, though, is not going to take that route. James Cameron remains surprisingly uninterested when it comes to sharing the story of his own journey to success on the big screen because he finds it “boring”.

"Abigail" star Alisha Weir was keen to perform as many of her own stunts as possible for the movie, in which she plays the titular ballerina vampire who is kidnapped by an ill-fated crew of criminals. Though stunt double Rachelle Beinart took over for the most dangerous and complex sequences, Weir's dance training made her a natural fit for learning combat choreography and flying through the air on wires. But one type of dance that she hadn't specifically trained in before was ballet -- which created a challenge, since "ballerina vampire" is the movie's hook, and the script opens with Abigail dancing to "Swan Lake."
Not just any dancing: Abigail is en pointe, an advanced ballet technique that requires the dancer to point their feet straight down and dance on their toes. Though some people are able to stand en pointe with bare feet for a few seconds (a party...

Anybody who has ever taken a stab at acting knows one aspect of the process deemed the absolute worst: the audition. Imagine stepping foot into a room filled with several people who are all there to judge you. Your looks, personality, emotions… every aspect of who you are on display for a room full of strangers. Well, in Hollywood, there is a legend of one audition that has been deemed the best put on tape. It was an audition for a new film by a director who was credited with single-handedly creating the summer blockbuster and who had a dream about crafting a more intimate family story about a kid and an alien. Imagine the immense pressure any actor, let alone a ten-year-old child, would be under to nail this audition. Yet this audition was so good that within seconds, the director, Steven Spielberg, uttered the words that would forever change this ten-year-old life: “Ok,...

Christopher Durang, one of American’s most acclaimed and accomplished playwrights whose works like Beyond Therapy, Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You and the Tony-winning Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike were as incisive as they were absurdly comic, died Tuesday night at his home in Pipersville, Pa., in Bucks County. He was 75.
His agent, Patrick Herold, confirmed that Durang died as a result complications of his 2016 diagnosis with logopenic primary progressive aphasia (Ppa), a form of Alzheimer’s disease that impedes the ability to process language. He remained out of the public spotlight since his condition was made public in 2022. In February, New York’s Dramatists Guild announced that the playwright would receive its 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award on May 6, placing Durang on a prestigious roster alongside such past awardees as John Guare, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Miller.

Tom Holland rose to international recognition with his portrayal of Peter Parker, a.k.a., Spider-Man, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with Captain America: Civil War. The audience’s perception of the actor has been solidified with his standalone movies, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home. There is no doubt that he is indeed one of the finest young actors in the entertainment industry currently.
The English actor has also been a part of movies, including Uncharted, The Devil All the Time, and Cherry. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, Holland’s performance and dedication to the Apple TV+ miniseries The Crowded Room was appreciated by the fans. The actor is now looking forward to returning to stage, performing one of the most beloved characters of William Shakespeare, and giving Leonardo DiCaprio a tough competition for its title.

The glamorous (and handsomely paid) actors and actresses who bring our favorite films and TV shows to life often captivate us, but let us not forget that the real heroes are the artistic wizards behind the camera: the directors. They are in charge of choosing the ideal cast and setting the overall direction of the production, which includes what you see on screen.
Christopher Nolan, the genius behind Inception and Interstellar, and James Cameron, the maestro of Terminator to Titanic who maintained the excitement for Avatar 2 in 2022, more than ten years after the first film’s release, are two auteurs who established their careers through writing and directing in their own iconic styles.
